Thought provoking By Annabele I can remember years ago attending a movie, while sitting in front of two giggling girls who obviously having seen it several times were repeating the dialogue word for word. I turned around and politely asked them to let me enjoy the movie without their annoying commentary. Too little too late, their damage already done, spoiling the movie by giving away the plot and ending. With this experience in mind, I make a point to never repeat what they did, so I never give spoilers.That said, I can't really go into too much detail about this short story without accidentally dropping a few spoilers, so my review will be a bit vague and allow you to figure out what happens yourself.For a short story, "Nothing but the Black" certainly makes one ponder the various possibilities out there, what would you do and how would you react in similar situations? I thought the storyline was well established, the character fleshed out enough for you to relate to the situation. This is a Free short story so I would certainly recommend you give it a shot, if you find you don't like it as much as I did, your only out the thirty minutes it took you to read it.

I have had the pleasure of reading Shade City (which I can not recommend enough) as well as another short story, Blood Magic. Both of these works, I adored. Finn has quite the writing flair, the ability to suck you into a story. When you read his stuff, you are THERE. So, when my brother came to me today and told me that Finn had a new short out, we were all over it. I was starting a my second book of the day so my brother took first crack at the tale and I knew that I would get around to it a bit later. (I might have read this sooner but I had ordered the final season of "Sons of Anarchy" a couple of days ago and it arrived today so nothing else mattered til that first episode got watched!) (On a different side note, I am thinking that my brother is writing his review at this exact same moment, so it will be fun to see how they compare.)I like most things supernatural but sci-fi is a close second favorite, thus Finn's claims that this is a little different from his usual style, in a science fiction vein instead of supernatural did not worry me. I took an outside smoke break and had Nothing But The Black on hand to combat the boredom.Hard to review novellas and short stories, in my opinion as you can't really say anything other than the general plot and your impressions of the writing as it is rather easy to give things away about the overall arc. Mr. Finn's writing is still above par of most writers that I read. He has an eye for the perfect amount of detailing as well as the man can pace the hell out of a story. Never too fast nor does he drag things to a boring crawl. He gets your attention and he holds it captive til he is done with you. A great thing in my book, truth be told.My brother told me that he loved it. BUT that he wasn't sure how I would feel about it. After reading it, I know now that my brother gets me for the most part, at least what drives me nuts about books/movies etc.I'll attempt to explain this in terms without a spoiler.....When I was little, my brother had me watch "The Shining". I really liked it but the ending of "He has always been there" did not sit well with me. It kept me awake at night, literally. I turned it over in my mind constantly because I just didn't have the answers I was looking for. I am not dumb but sometimes, I just like stuff to be laid out for me, which is not always the case. I just like everything to be nice, neat and explained and wrapped up. I am not a fan of happy endings but I like closure. (Sorry, it's a thing with me) I am not comparing Finn's newest fabrication to "The Shining' in likes of story or plot but only in the fact that I am quite sure that this story will haunt my mind for some time. Not all of my questions were questions and where some people love this, my O.C.D kicks in and it drives me crazy. SERIOUSLY. NUTS.Seriously, you should read this because it wonderfully executed. Don't let my weird hang-ups stop you because Domino Finn should be on everyone's "To-Read" list. Better yet, on the "Read" shelf.

By Father Ted Call me old-fashioned but I like a beginning, a middle and an end; whether it's a story, a song or a three-course meal. This was a chapter that went nowhere. If there was anything more than a meaningless ramble then I missed it.

By Anastasia McPherson Country Bumpkin, the Australian publisher of the A-Z series of instructional books for various types of embroidery and needlework scores again with this affordable reprint. These books sell out fast and then used copies command a high price, so make sure you get yours while they last. Country Bumpkin also reprinted their two Stitch Dictionaries in this round of reprints and I can't recommend those highly enough for beginning and intermediate embroiderers and as a reference for the more advanced.Now for their offering in Crewel Embroidery. Crewel Embroidery is a classic form of embroidery using wool threads on linen fabric and stylized floral patterns, though modern interpretations often use more realistic forms. It is a beautiful form of embroidery and there is a reason that crewel has remained popular since Elizabethan and Tudor times. The basic stitches are also easy to learn the the wool threads are forgiving in the more difficult stitches.The A-Z Books follow a tried and true format. First there is a history of the embroidery type, followed by a review of required tools - including any specialty tools specific to the type of embroidery taught and a review of materials, mainly thread and material options. Then there is a stitch dictionary section that is specific to the type of embroidery, in this case crewel. The stitch instructions are photographed at each stage of the stitch and step by step written instructions are provided under each photograph. This section is one of the things that makes the A-Z series so valuable - even complex stitches are easy to learn using only the book. Examples of crewel embroidery are shown throughout the book for inspiration. The only criticism that I have of this section is that sometimes light threads are used on light fabrics and the contrast isn't as strong visually as it could be - but this is a minor quibble of a great format.Finally, beginning projects are provided so that the student can try the stitches and new skills. These are generally small and cartoons/patterns are provided so that the designs can be transferred easily. The stitch instructions can also be used for other crewel kits and for original designs. Country Bumpkin books are great reference books and I have several in my library and plan on having more over the course of my life.This book provides some advanced crewel techniques too, as well as all of the beginner stitches and most of the intermediate stitches. Trellising and couching are extensively covered and with a lot of examples for inspiration. I used the trellising instructions as a jumping off point to modify and improve an old Mazaltov kit that I found at a garage sale. I can't recommend the A-Z series highly enough. Good instructions, a usable and dependable format, stitch instructions that are clear and made for both visual and auditory learners and enough meat to turn a neophyte into an intermediate stitcher. More advanced embroiderers will find the stitch dictionaries useful as a reference and the examples of work inspirational.The A-Z books are famous and coveted for a reason. They always provide solid instruction and good inspiration and are useful for years to come. Brava!

The Canterville Ghost, by Oscar Wilde

About the Author Oscar Wilde was born on October 16, 1854, to the Irish nationalist and writer Speranza Wilde and the doctor William Wilde. After graduating from Oxford in 1878, Wilde moved to London, where he became notorious for his sharp wit and flamboyant style of dress. Though he was publishing plays and poems throughout the 1880s, it wasn t until the late 1880s and early 1890s that his work started to be received positively. In 1895, Oscar Wilde was tried for homosexuality and was convicted and sentenced to two years in prison. Tragically, this downfall came at the height of his career, as his plays, An Ideal Husband "and The Importance of Being Earnest, "were playing to full houses in London. He was greatly weakened by the privations of prison life, and moved to Paris after his sentence. Wilde died in a hotel room, either of syphilis or complications from ear surgery, in Paris, on November 30, 1900.

A light and humorous story, and after reading it's guaranteed to stop you worrying about things that go bump in the night.

Excellent narration and a wonderful listening experience By Z Hayes Thanks to our local library, my daughter and I have enjoyed several playaways which are basically all-in-one audiobooks. All one needs is a triple A battery and one is set to go. At our local library, patrons are expected to supply their own batteries and headphones (the latter because of hygiene concerns). They are really small and inconspicuous so that it makes it convenient to slip into a purse, bring it along to the gym or while exercising outdoors, and also on car trips. Although it is an all-in-one audiobook, the playaway can also be heard via a CD player with the use of an adapter.The operation of the playaway is simple - one just plugs in earphones, speakers, or a car adapter into the provided jack; press the POWER button, press the play button, and listen! There is a keypad which allows the listener to do one of the following: equalizer, Power button, speed button (choice of 5 speeds), turning volume up, turning volume down, LCD screen which indicates the status and how much battery power is left, reverse button for chapters, play/pause button, and forward chapter button.The Canterville Ghost has always been one of my favorite stories and Rupert Degas' comic-infused narration makes this an engaging listening experience.

By Ruthie McBride The Canterville Ghost by Oscar Wilde is a highly entertaining book. 5 stars for this wonderful book, I've read and re-read it many times. Whoever wrote the description for this illustrated edition for Amazon is completely mistaken. I downloaded a free sample to see if maybe there were two versions of this book but the sample that downloaded is the original book. The mistaken description states: "In the 1600s, cowardly Sir Simon of Canterville flees a duel and seeks solace in the family castle. His ashamed father seals him in the room where he is hiding and dooms him to life as a ghost until one of his descendants performs a brave deed. Simon believes he may be saved when he meets Cuffy Williams, an American kinsman stationed with a troop of soldiers at the castle in 1943. Will this blood relative save the family honor, or will his blood be as yellow as the rest of the Cantervilles?" Perhaps that's describing a different novel? No matter though, the true book is much more entertaining and the illustrations for this edition are quite nice.

When I opened it up, I discovered this book is another edition of the same book I bought, "More Blankets and Throws: 100 Stylish Squares to Knit, only different covers and different publishing companies. Kinda sneaky to change the covers.

By LJ Harlem, NY As a knitting and crochet instructor in NY, I'm always looking for interesting books that I can use to inspire my students with. I found this book be pattern rich, colorful and "oh if i had the time" nice. But not very practical for knitter's who are limited on time when it comes to knitting. However, if you are looking to add some pop to children sweaters, hats. scaves, mittens, leg warmers or even a childs TV pillow you will find plenty of pattern ideas here.

This is my first book … ever; so, when leaving a review, be brutal and tell me how much you loved reading it. This will help my author-ego (see what I did there?) in an attempt to produce another book. The goal of this book is to encourage you, reader, to fill your creation void by trying spray paint art. Being a semi-impatient person (AKA the type of person who loves grocery store lines…being facetious of course) I knew, despite my desire to try, art would not work out. But, one day a man on a New Jersey boardwalk - yes, I am from New Jersey; please don’t judge me – creating beautiful pieces of art changed my perspective completely. In a matter of minutes, being sprayed into existence in front of my eyes, beautiful outer space, wooded, sunset, ocean and waterfall scenes sprung to life. His speed, accuracy and lack of care for “mistakes” was impeccable and mesmerizing. His technique was as much art as the final pieces. A crowd began to form around the man’s station, mouths agape, myself included, promoting both intrigue and awe at how easy he made this seem. My mouth was open so long I chugged water like an elephant to rehydrate. Then and there I decided my apathy and general fear of creating art was over. After rehydrating, I closed my mouth, and fixed my eyes on this nameless artist. The nameless artist taught me a few things that night: technique, tools required, and that there was an art for the impatient. Ohhh I hope you enjoyed it!! I'm new-ish (lol) to spray paint art and I was looking for something that talked about techniques and different styles. Its not a bad book for someone who is new to spraying. You talked about doing another book, and I would love to see that, pictures would be great, and adding different styles would be great.

My only concern and I'm sure the author will correct this in his future books is to add photographs which make up for a thousand words. Using the techniques mentioned and some practice you will find yourself painting some really amazing space scenes. It Works! He can't mention ventilation enough and he is so very correct. Good job at trying to help beginners learn the basics and will be much better when photos are added. Keep it up you obviously have a passion for this. Would have given 5 stars except the book lacked even one picture to help give meaning to what the author is saying. Not a bad first book on the subject. I'm sure someone will come on later and criticize the author but at least he is trying to help others learn something giving his experience and views as a guide to beginners.

There are not only too few images, but the majority of them are not color images. Color is an extremely important aspect, both historically and aesthetically, when studying and discussing mosaics.

It will appeal to anyone that is a fan of fishing, or sailing or the San Francisco Bay area for that matter.In the early 1900's, young Jack pursues poachers in several short storys that are often funny and sometimes hair-raising! The characters are colorful and full of mischief. Without motors on their boats and the power of the sail only, it's easy to get caught up in the early day version of the car chase as Jack chases one criminal after another. Great adventure!

6 of 7 people found the following review helpful. Blown away by this book! By Colleen McMahon "Tales of the Fish Patrol" is a series of short stories or reminiscences by Jack London. The narrator is a teenage boy who is working on the "fish patrol", a small group of semi-deputized boatmen who patrol San Francisco bay and attempt to enforce the fishing regulations. It reads as very autobiographical and London did do similar work at that age, but how much of these are fictionalized I don't know.It doesn't matter, though, to the casual reader, because these stories grab you and pull you in. No matter that I'm unfamiliar with sailing boats of a century-plus ago, nor the geography of San Francisco Bay, nor the means and regulations of fishing at that time. London describes everything so vividly that I was never lost. These stories are really gripping and suspenseful and while each can be read individually, the series is an overall narrative that circles around perfectly from start to finish.The one drawback is that like other authors of his time, London repeats and reinforces ugly ethnic stereotypes and language that is offensive to modern ears. It is jarring but can be overlooked in the pacing of the stories by many readers; however for this reason I wouldn't recommend these stories for younger readers.I would love to see an edited edition that preserves these exciting stories without the ethnic slurs; they would also make a fun TV or movie adaptation.Really worth checking out, especially for the price! I had already been familiar with "Call of the Wild" and "White Fang" but will now be seeking out more of London's work.

A San Francisco classic By sekander The appeal of these stories is universal but Bay Area residents with a sense of place and an appreciation of historywill absolutely enjoy the tales spun by the master in their own back yard. Travel back to a rough hewn time before the modern age and meet some amazing characters-the type that built the City we know and love. Sometimes dismissed as young adult fiction, and not worthy of London's elite canon, these tales, nonetheless, are a vivid portrait of a young, emerging San Francisco.

Cartright Tells All By michael ulreich Richard Cartright has used his vast experience as a construction manager working in such exotic locales as Chicago's Field Museum to produce an essential book about the successful management of home remodeling projects. But this isn't a simple how-to book. Richard covers everything from negotiating the bid process to obtaining building permits, from planning the project to completing the construction phase. And he describes the process in a style that isn't boring or mundane. His enlightened writing is breezy and informative, the absolute reverse of a stodgy technical manual. I’m not that handy and I make more doing what I do, than I could ever save swinging my own hammer. I just don’t want to get ripped off. That’s why this book is so amazing. I’ve never seen anything like this before. It’s like, Construction Management 101, completely deconstructed, utterly revealing, and written for people just like me. The title is “Successful Home Remodeling”, but its’ clear this system is just as applicable to the commercial business too. From start to finish – the wealth of insider information is incredible, the system is simple, the instructions are clear, and the tools are easy to use. Now I know exactly why construction and renovation projects go over budget. I saved a lot of money on forms alone, just getting the book. Now that I have it, I’m going to save a ton of money on my next project, without doing any of the hard work.”

2 of 2 people found the following review helpful. Don't be Reluctant to read it! By Relina Skye "The Reluctant Goddess" by Karen Ranney takes off from where we left off. Marcie Montgomery is a very special vampire. She walk in the sun, eats, and can breed. These qualities are very attractive to normal vampires who would love to use Marcie as a lab rat or a breeding mare to find a way to do the same thing. Marcie has to figure out exactly what she is, how to protect herself, meanwhile she's also desperate to keep a sense of autonomy. The last thing Marcie wants, besides being pregnant by a certain vampire, is to be dependent on Dan. Which is nice since she could have easily allowed him to handle everything that happens to her. Overall, I loved this novel. It was a great follow up and it kept me interested. Yes, at times her internal monologue was a bit repetitive, but besides that it was great. What I also liked about this novel was that many of the conclusions that I came up at the end of the last one were tossed on their head. And even if you haven't read the last story, you won't be lost. Ranney makes sure that the reader has a clear picture in their heads about what has already happened along with connected those actions with their consequences. I look forward to reading the next novel and finding out which direction Ranney takes the bombshell from the end of the novel.

Marcie Montgomery had a pretty lackluster life By Kindle Customer Marcie Montgomery had a pretty lackluster life, but boy her death has been one thing after another. Marcie had a so so life. Not wanted by her mother and raised with the love of a no nonsense Nana, she went to her job as an insurance adjuster and went home. Her long relationship was one big yawn and she ended up being changed into a vampire against her will. The first book had Marcie surrounded by intrigue and not knowing what was going on. She could eat real food, hated blood and could take sunlight.She has holed up in the castle Clucky's Chicken built with Dan, her former Ranger bodyguard. She is still in hiding from the Niccolo Maddock and still does not know who all is trying to kill her. Marcie is trying to be the first vamp to get a hysterectomy and is trying not to freak out about being a foretold goddess. Oh and Dan's mother hates her. I love the new take on vamps as Marcie learns to navigate her unlife.
