  • From the Inside Flap Castor pulled her outside. "I can't shift inside. It's like a very large umbrella opening inside of the house. Come." He brought her to a rocky outcropping, and she watched his skin turn purple. His clothes shifted with him, and he grew bigger. Much bigger. When he was done shifting, he was the height of a small one-story house. He was magnificent to look at. "Wow." Castor knelt down. "Get on my back. If you come up my arm, you should be able to hold onto my neck." She looked all the way up. Alice was nervous. She'd ridden horses before, but she was pretty scared to fly on a dragon. "Isn't there a saddle? A harness, or something? This looks really dangerous." "This is the only way back. We don't have a boat. We don't need one." It was true. What use would dragons have for a boat? Alice was resigned. She was needed back home, and this was the only way back. She climbed his arm, up his shoulder, and then to the back of his neck. She leaned down all the way and clung to him.  "Ready." Castor took a few steps, and then he launched himself into the air with a few powerful beats of his wings. Alice closed her eyes as she felt the world drop away beneath her. She'd flown before, of course, in an airplane. But in an airplane, you generally couldn't just slide off the side into the middle of the Pacific Ocean. She didn't know if she could survive this kind of drop, and she had no intention of finding out. The way that every part of her clung to Castor would've been sexy if he was in human form, but as a dragon it was just like riding a horse. A sexy horse that could talk to you and fly, yeah, but like a horse. Pegasus. She giggled to herself, which was better than opening her eyes and seeing the wide open sea beneath them.  "I'm going to drop you on Isabela, but I have to do it carefully. When I descend, I'm going to be invisible. It is how we've stayed a secret so long. It's ok. You will still be able to feel me there." Alice hoped so. "Ok." The boat ride between islands took hours, but flights took much less time. In no time at all, she saw the seahorse shape of Isabela, and they were beginning to circle in order to descend. Castor went invisible, and he landed. She slid off of his back and headed towards the buildings she could see in the distance. At that moment, the land beneath her feet dropped into the sea. Castor grabbed her with his claws up, higher, and they watched the land where she just stood get pulled into the ocean. Nothing was left. "Oh my goodness. What happened?" "Bad luck." "Do you have something to do with this?" "No. You do." "Me? Why?" "I told you that you'd suffer bad luck if you decided to leave. This is only the beginning. Because you have decided to leave, fate will try to stop you." "My friends?" she whispered. "If you want to bring the bad luck to them, then you can go back." "So, it's not like I really have a choice." "You do. You can keep trying to get back. I'd have to prepare, but I could fly you back to Guayaquil. You can get a plane back to Indiana." "Would my whole life be like this? One calamity after another?" "Yes." The choice, which she had, didn't seem like a choice at all. Either she could ruin everything and everyone in her real life, or she could stay here without everyone she'd known before...

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. new enough for me By Silvia New enough for me ..and everything is presented in a smooth and consistent way. I really learned a few tricks from this book. I'm usually not too bothered by ready-made cleansing products unless they affect my skin/hair. This book convinced me to try to go natural and do stuff myself with household products as well.

0 of 0 people found the following review helpful. Loved that book! By Lysanne P. I always like to use organic cleaners around the house but they are pretty expansive and sometimes hard to get. I got this book to make my own cleaners. Knowing what goes into the cleaners ingredients is very comforting as I don't like using harsh chemicals and be environmentally responsible. Also, saving money by making my own is a great thing. This book is one of the best I have found yet. All the recipes use all natural ingredients that can easily be found in supermarkets or health stores. The author explains very well at the beginning of the book why you should transition to natural cleaners and what is ingredients are used in regular household cleaners, including chemical to watch out for. She goes onto explaining how to create your own natural cleaners and their advantages. There is also a list of natural ingredients to use with a detailed description of their cleaning powers. Finally, the bulk of the book is about the natural home-cleaning recipes for every room in your house, including bathroom, kitchen, living room, and laundry room. I learned a several tricks from the 25 smart natural cleaning tips chapter like that eucalyptus oil can remove glued labels and stickers or how to make a pomander. Overall, the book is well written and very informative. Loved those tricks and tips. Highly recommended to anyone wanting to make their own all natural cleaner for a clean green house.

Disappointed... and wishes for better By Izzy Busy Bee I do not want to be too critical of an author's writing and style because it is honestly hard to write books that people would want to read. But that being said, I felt that the series was going nowhere in this book. Just when you think you met the most powerful being in the Kenyon-verse, you're introduced to another character who is more powerful and has a more tragic story. And all of them do, at least all the men, which comes across as identical people. There is almost nothing that makes them stand out. Also all the sappy lines stay the same, such as "she looked at him like he mattered." Honestly, you can flip-flop characters and the story remains the same. It lacks originality and creativeness, which I'm sorry to see is gone. I loved "Seize the Night." It was honestly one of my favorites and there was a clear direction of romantic growth between Valerius and Tabitha. It wasn't sudden and they had the time to know each other. I feel like the author is trying to finish a book instead of taking us through a story. I hope that she re-evaluates her writing style and follows the storyline through to the end.

I hated Styxx with the fiery passion of a thousand suns, and honestly, the Dark Hunter series has been losing me for awhile. I have had an increasingly difficult time following all the threads of the larger story arc since Acheron. I thought I might be ok when we started to learn about the Hellchasers, but then we moved on to the Native American lore and with some of the Greek and Atlantean stuff still in there, I just can't keep up.All of that aside, I really loved the early books in the series. I had to give it one more chance, even though I had never even heard of the hero or heroine. I'm glad I did.Even though I didn't recognize the core couple by name, I did recognize their family connections. Josette is a cousin to the clan of Devereaux women. She's tight with Selena, Tabitha, Amanda and the gang, but she is cynical about the supernatural. Obviously, that is about to change. Cadegan, meanwhile, is related to Thorn and has spent the past thousand years in a hell dimension, courtesy of the Hellchaser himself. The couple meets when Jo accidentally falls through a mirror that serves as a portal to his prison.Cadegan is the quintessential Kenyon hero. No one has ever loved him. Everyone he ever trusted has betrayed him. He lives a life of misery in a gray world... until Jo enters the picture. The two of them connect right away. It's total insta-love. Like in a day. But I was so caught up in the angsty tortured hero stuff, I didn't really care. She brought color and kindness into his world. She made him feel hope again. She looked at him (*wait for it*) ... LIKE HE MATTERED. -That's how you know you are reading a Kenyon book, y'all.Anyway, Cadegan makes it his mission to get Jo back home and he goes to great lengths to do it. There are bumps along the way. Ash, Styxx, Thorn and others enter the picture. There's a dragon and some Fae and, somehow, some King Arthur stuff thrown in the mix. Somehow, it's all tied in with Noir and the Malachai and even though I have read every book in this series -some multiple times- I couldn't connect all the dots if my life depended on it. So I stopped trying and wallowed in the romance. The relationship progression is classic Kenyon. I've read it in dozens of her books, but it still works. At least it does when the hero hasn't been raped a thousand times or sent to an island alone for 11-thousand years. And in this case, we didn't enter that territory so I was good with it.It was a very fast read. It was a fair number of pages but the font was big and the margins were huge so I'd be curious to hear the word count. Overall, though, I think Dark Hunter fans will like it. I just wish Kenyon would have a primer somewhere so I could refresh my memory on the connections between all players, like Jared, Jaden, Noir, Thorn, Nick and the significance of the Sephiroth, the Malachai and.. just everything. Is it just me?Rating: B

By Sugar Spice Review:Hmmm… I keep reading and hoping and reading and hoping that the series struggles out of this 3 star slump it’s been in for me already years. Again, this next installment had some awesome parts and things I always expect and love about these books, but then again it had so many aspects that just continue dragging the series further down, so unfortunately 2 stars this time – it just didn’t rise above that. I’m genuinely sad! This book had some unexplored plot devices for the series, for example, most of the action taking place in a medieval-like demon dimension, fairies, Britannia and so on. So it definitely had some fresh ideas and new paths not crossed before. Thanks to this, the book had a different vibe to it than the previous ones, which was unexpectedly pleasant.I think one of the most anticipated aspects about this series are the hints, clues and information given regarding the multitude of intriguing, mysterious and compelling characters introduced. They are the ones you want to know more about, but Kenyon keeps a tight grip on every piece of itty bitty info and I predict she will eternally keep you craving for more, because the amount of such characters she creates isn’t exactly small and at least in every book there is a new addition to this elite secretive club of hunks. At times it annoys me, but the joy of finding out something new always compensates for the frustration. Also, in this installment, we get a lot, but not nearly enough regarding one of the members of this elusive club: Thorn. The tidbits were intriguing to say the least, especially the one in the very end before the epilogue.I was extremely heart-warmed to see Ash and Styxx getting along so well and truly behaving like loving brothers. Theirs were one of the most memorable moments in the book. Now to the cons:I didn’t feel that there was a significant conflict or final obstacle in the book, of course, there was something, but it was too shallow and too easily brushed aside or at least it came across as such. There were again old loved characters just stuffed into the book without any substantial purpose, I want better for them to than just be mentioned or have one line of dialogue just for the sake of it. The story was too rushed and handled too superficially, especially during the second half and the same was with the romance, which is sad because the potential was all there, honestly, there was sooo much promise and I was so excited for this book.Something that’s started to really bug me: I’m at a point where I need a summary, diagram or anything that will help sort out all the relations and connections between all the characters. I was so lost several times when new info and background knowledge regarding characters and their relations were thrown out there. Also, can there be a stop to the most-powerful-being craze, it’s like each new or even old character is more powerful than the last. When you think this is the über boss, then another comes along who makes mice out of the last ones.Something about the characters:I liked Cadegan, he was sympathetic, kickass and tortured, but not in an overdoing kind of way. Despite everything, he was a nice guy not some bitter and hateful badass. That was a pleasant surprise and kind of refreshing.Jo, I wasn’t really that fond of, because while I adore smarty-pants and sarcastic heroines, she was just too much. Almost everything she said had some “hilarious” remark in it, at times it was so inappropriate and so against the mood of the situation that it got bothersome quickly.Overall:The world of the Dark-Hunter series is fascinating, vast and addicting and I sincerely hope it will find its way out of this slump! That’s all I’m going to say.

Richard and Kahlan are finally married and enjoying their wedding night back in the Spirit House in the Village of the Mud People. Soon, sudden and unexplainable deaths begin to occur, and Richard comes to the conclusion that when Kahlan called forth the Chimes in order to save him, they remained free, causing havoc. Zedd sends Richard and Kahlan off to the Wizard’s Keep in Aydindril to get a special bottle that contains a spell that will stop the threat. While en-route, Richard, Kahlan, and their Mord-Sith protector Cara are sidetracked into dealing with the people of Anderith, who have a powerful weapon of mass destruction called the Dominie Dirtch. They find that the leadership of Anderith wishes to surrender to the Imperial Order rather than surrender to the D’Haran Empire. As Richard tries his best to convince the people of Anderith of the danger the Imperial Order poses, he becomes firmly convinced that the Chimes are loose.

Soul of the Fire (Sword of Truth Book 5), by Terry Goodkind

Amazon.com Review Soul of the Fire is the fifth book in Terry Goodkind's wildly popular Sword of Truth saga. The previous books are: Wizard's First Rule, Stone of Tears, Blood of the Fold, and Temple of the Winds.

When last we saw our heroes--Richard Cypher (Lord Rahl) and Kahlan Amnell--they each had made enormous sacrifices to save one another from certain doom. To save her beloved, Khalan, Mother Confessor of the Midlands, had spoken the three chimes, summoning these chaotic beings from the world beyond and unwittingly releasing incredibly destructive power. Now the chimes are stealing souls, and malevolent forces are reshaping the world itself. To save everything from almost certain doom, Richard, Kahlan, and the wizard Zedd must hunt the elusive chimes and reharness them before it's too late.

Although comparisons to Robert Jordan's Wheel of Time series are inevitable, there's obviously enough room in the world for more than one blockbuster swords and sorcery series. With Soul of the Fire, fans of epic sagas will get their fill of adventure, magic, strange beings, and struggles for power as Goodkind delivers another thrilling episode of the Sword of Truth, with all the complexity and taut characterization we've come to expect from this master of fantasy. --Adam Fisher

From Publishers Weekly Seeker of Truth Richard Rahl and his wife, Mother Confessor Kahlan Amnell, survive another incredible series of obstacles in Goodkind's sequel to his acclaimed Temple of the Winds. Here, readers learn that when Kahlan used a spell to save Richard from death in the last book, she inadvertently released the Chimes, deadly ancient beings who threaten to destroy the world by absorbing all its magic. Richard's grandfather Zedd goes off to combat the Chimes while Richard and Kahlan, accompanied by Du Chaillu, a pregnant spirit woman who is bound to Richard by an ancient prophesy, travel to Anderith to find the journal of a wizard who defeated the Chimes in ages past. But in Anderith, the rivalry between the Ander and Haken peoples (somewhat heavily handled, with overtones of the author's pro-colonial opinions) threatens to divide the land just when it needs unity in order to defend itself against an invasion by Emperor Jagang's thuggish hordes. After many suspenseful moments, everything comes somewhat raggedly together in a happy ending. Notable for its engaging secondary characters, the novel also evinces flashes of sly wit, as when an evil Chime takes the form of a menacing chicken. Though the narrative sprawls all over the map and the tone can edge too far towards the didactic, Goodkind's ingenious world-building will keep readers captivated by the latest installment of his bestselling Sword of Truth series.Copyright 1999 Reed Business Information, Inc.

From Library Journal An act of desperation sets loose the three Chimes, otherworldly creatures with the power to destroy magic. While Richard Rahl, the Seeker of Truth, and his wife, Kahlan, the Mother Confessor, search for a way to recall the Chimes, the emperor Jagang continues his savage war against the lands of D'Hara. The fifth installment in the author's "Sword of Truth" series reveals further complications in an already complex story that shows no signs of coming to an end. Libraries that own the previous volumes in the series should add this title to their fantasy collections. Copyright 1999 Reed Business Information, Inc.

67 of 72 people found the following review helpful. In one word: shallow. By Alexander Holmes I can remember when I read "Wizard's First Rule" I was impressed. Not only because it renewed my faith in the fantasy genre, but also because it was fun, hard to put down and -albeit a few cliches here and there- well written. I can remember forsaking many a night of going out just to stay in and reading about Richard, Kahlan and all of the other characters from this series that intrigued me so. The strongest point of the books was that: character development and the consistency these characters maintained throughout the story.Unfortunately all that appears to have been lost in "Soul of the Fire". An avid reader of the series, I must say this last book was not up to par with the first four (although there has been a visible decadence since "Blood of the Fold"). Firstly, I was shocked to see that almost half of this book is dedicated not to the characters we know and love, but to Anderith and its people. I would be all well and good if they played a major role in what we are told is the story's epicentre (namely, the chimes), but unfortunately, they serve no higher good than providing constant anticlimaxes. Perhaps it is not just that, but rather that the characters are so badly created that no-one except for Fitch (and to an extent, Beata and Dalton) gets a reasonable development. Even so, Fitch is utterly inconsistent, sometimes showing incredible stupidity and sometimes the cold-heartedness of a mass murderer. When I started reading this book I thought Fitch would mimic characters such as Steerpike in "Gormenghast", slowly rising to power and corruption, perhaps not the freshest option but the most viable. He does not. Or rather, he half-does it. What is worse, he disappears for most of the second-half and comes back suddenly just to be cut off the story in a most casual fashion, again, something that shows another of the book's weaknesses. It seems that the author tried to tell too many stories at a time, but couldn't finish them off properly (we know authors have deadlines too!). My hunch is that he had so many plotholes by the second half that he decided to write off many of the side stories (Beata, Fitch) to carry on with the main theme (the chimes). The last quarter of the book seems hurried and the conclusions are too abrupt for the reader to digest. Out of the blue, Richard comes up with the solution for beating the chimes, as abstract and underexplained as it is. The chimes, supposedly central to the story become just feeble reasons to innocuously explain the rest of the plots. The storytelling is shallow and incongruent, and after jumping from plot to plot, reading over unnecessarily dull chapters (most of them involving less than masterfully portrayed political scheming in Anderith) the reader becomes confused and frustrated. There is some merit to this book, though. The simpering and almost sickeningly melose realtionship between Richard and Kahlan has been, fortunately, toned down. Furthermore, the book does off with much of the homoerotic porn novel eroticism that its predecessors contained, making it less "trashy" than before (reading about Richard's "manly chest" and "bulging, powerful arms" can get tiring after a while). Also, the narrative takes on a different style in "Soul of Fire", being concise and assertive rather than the more lyrical approach given to the other books. This neither enhances nor hinders the reading, but it does make the experience feel fresh.I understand that authors cannot always write about the same things; clearly, in this book the author tried to stray from the traditional and create a different type of novel in his series. While I would not say that he has completely failed, it is far fom being a job well done. Moreover, this book has left me indifferent as to what may come next in the series. It feels like this was not a proper "Sword of Truth" book, but two books in one, one about Anderith and one about Richard and the chimes, both failing to converge in the end and leaving the novel it as it is: two unfinished, rushed parallel stories that hold little relation between one another.

29 of 29 people found the following review helpful. read at your own risk By A. M. Ponzo I love the Sword of Truth series. I have re read it several times and frequently recommend it. Unfortunately Soul of the Fire is a total dud. If you are reading the series for the first time be warned. When I do reread the series I usually just skim Soul of the Fire and sometimes skip it completely. I really wanted to see how being married would affect Richard and Kahlan. I didn't expect it to turn them into two different people. Richard goes from an intelligent man not hampered by his lack of formal education to a bumbling idiot who can barely articulate his thoughts. Kahlan (sadly Zed also)turns from a woman who has grown to love and trust Richard into someone who refuses to take him seriously and treats him like a child. In a way I was almost that glad the story turned to Anderith, until the story turned to Anderith. I have seldom read about a more shallow, venal group of people. I could almost hear Abraham bargaining with God, "will you spare them if there are 20 good, how about 10, five? Please God." The fact that all of the characters introduced in Anderith then were summarily whacked just seemed to add insult to injury. To spend almost 2/3 of a 700+ page book reading about unlikable characters and then have it be meaningless cause they're all dead? Time I'll never get back. Richard and party showing up at the end just felt contrived. It was almost like Terry suddenly remembered this was supposed to be a Sword of Truth story, so oh yeah, they should put in an appearance. The whole thing about Richard losing the Sword and Cara chasing after it was quite unbelievably dumb. Just another of several examples of a plot point looking for a story. All in all quite disappointing. Fortunately I really liked the first four books so I didn't give up on the series completely.

Family Guy Chicken got nothing on Me By Twark Main OMG, OMG, this is incredible writing, OMG:"Hissing, hackles lifting, the chicken's head rose. Kahlan pulled back. Its claws digging into stiff dead flesh, the chicken slowly turned to face her. It cocked its head, making its comb flop, its wattles sway. "Shoo," Kahlan heard herself whisper. There wasn't enough light, and besides, the side of its beak was covered with gore, so she couldn't tell if it had the dark spot, But she didn't need to see it. "Dear spirits, help me," she prayed under her breath. The bird let out a slow chicken cackle. It sounded like a chicken, but in her heart she knew it wasn't. In that instant, she completely understood the concept of a chicken that was not a chicken. This looked like a chicken, like most of the Mud People's chickens. But this was no chicken. This was evil manifest."I kid you not, I've not seen such a diabolically evil chicken since Family Guy. kudos to Goodkind

Review OMG! ~Rebecca~ If you liked Stephen King's The Mist or can remember Dreamscape you will probably enjoy this story ~Andrew~ I would say that the uniqueness of the story makes this book worth the read ~Cassie~

From the Author New edition. Re-written, 332 pages instead of 262 pages.Edge of End is a horror and fantasy story about a man who finds himself in an odd town without any memories of his past. To survive he has to face the powerful evil dwelling in town.Through hideous monsters, devils and demons, abnormal residents, he has to work his way to the exit. This is not just a fantasy novel, by telling this story I want to send a message to the readers. It's there, between the pages and it won't miss your eyes. Unlike the last edition (262 pages), the new one is 332. Re-written, 5 added chapters, re-edited. Having received letters from the readers I decided to develop more about Jonathan's past, show his strong and weak sides. Also I worked on the female character - Elizabeth. Some reviews say that English isn't my native language. That's true. I wrote this book two years ago, my English has changed since then, and now, re-writing it, I've made the story flow better. Still there might be several mistakes, a few ones, but I do count on your support and understanding. Follow the story, follow the meaning and the message I've put in it.

After a few chapters in, I was questioning if I wanted out. The MC John has no memories of his supposed previous life and is trying to figure out what exactly is going on in this town. The writing was solid, although I did notice a few grammatical errors; there weren’t enough to make me tear my hair out like some books. The biggest issue I had with this book was that it was approximately 90% descriptive and 10% dialogue. I love 1st person POV because I can get into the character’s head, however dialogue to me is equally important. The description of the town was very in-depth without being too detailed, as were the action sequences. However, I just personally enjoy a lot of good dialogue between my characters. I think the synopsis of this book should be tweaked so that readers know what they are getting themselves into; also it may draw an entirely new set of readers.Suren Fant took the time to explain how the book evolved into this exploration for the reader and how he wanted to cause his readers to stop and explore their beliefs and open up a path of exploration and questions. This book does exactly that. I think he succeeded beautifully in that endeavor. I know throughout the book I was questioning what I would do in this situation, various motivations, subplots, etc. All of this was before I read what Fant was hoping to achieve. As I stated before, I really want and need dialogue in my books. However, this book did keep pulling me along. It’s a very short read-an hour or under. I wanted to see what happened to John & Elizabeth. I was curious of the motivations of Sam and what would ultimately happen. While personal preference would have me give this a 3 star rating simply because of my own bias, the writing and plot deserve a solid 4. John is developed well as a MC (Elizabeth, not quite as much), the plot is solid, and there are enough twists in the plot that it keeps readers on their toes. I definitely think somehow the synopsis needs to include what Fant explains as his goal at the end of the book. This will attract the right kind of reader and IMO gain him more fans. I believe he has the imagination and talent to do well in this arena.I was provided a free copy of this book for my honest opinion.

There's no subtlety to the story, and the preachiness really wears on you after a while. Combine all that with the bizarre 1st-person narrative style, and I had to skip many chapters out of sheer frustration, which I never do. Not a book I'd recommend....
