What if a society banished its worst nightmare to the far edge of the solar system, destined to sip only dregs of light and struggle for the barest living.  And yet, that life thrived?  It grew and learned and became far more than you ever expected, and it wanted to return to the sun.  What if it didn’t share your moral compass in any way?The Glittering Edge duology describes the clash of forces when an advanced society that has filled a solar system with flesh and blood life meets the near-AI’s that it banished long ago.  This is a story of love for the wild and natural life on a colony planet, complex adventure set in powerful space stations, and the desire to live completely whether you are made of flesh and bone or silicon and carbon fiber.  In Edge of Dark, meet ranger Charlie Windar and his adopted wild predator, and explore their home on a planet that has been raped and restored more than once.  Meet Nona Hall, child of power and privilege from the greatest station in the system, the Diamond Deep.  Meet Nona’s best friend, a young woman named Chrystal who awakens in a robotic body….

Edge of Dark (The Glittering Edge), by Brenda Cooper

Review A 2016 Philip K. Dick Award Nominee!“Playing God is dangerous: Edge of Dark is an intelligent, thoughtful look at what it might mean to coexist with superior AIs that we ourselves have created.  Brenda Cooper’s universe is detailed, inventive, and ultimately dazzling.  I will remember Chrystal for a very long time.”   —NANCY KRESS, winner of multiple Hugo and Nebula awards“Edge of Dark is bold, immersive, boundary-pushing sci-fi; a new breed of transhuman space opera. It asks all the right questions: What’s the line between human and posthuman? How would immensely enhanced creatures treat mere humans? And how would we baseline humans view them—as our successors, our future selves, or our exterminators? Whatever opinion you enter this book with, it’ll surprise you. Read it.” —RAMEZ NAAM, author of Nexus and CruxPraise for previous books by Brenda Cooper:"What The Creative Fire does, and does well, is marry the character-driven focus of Cooper's writing with an intriguing protagonist, a well thought out setting and spins a fascinating story."--SF Signal "I loved The Diamond Deep. Excellent writing, fabulous story, and an emotional punch that leaves you wishing that Cooper wrote faster. Damned fine storytelling." --J. A. Pitts, author of Forged in Fire

Complex and Surprising Exploration of the Human and Posthuman By Ramez Naam Edge of Dark is part space-opera, part coming-of-age story, and part exploration of the relationship between humans and the post-human descendants who may ultimately transcend them. The book takes place in the same universe as Brenda Cooper's "Ruby's Song" books (The Creative Fire; The Diamond Deep). However, you don't need to have read those books to enjoy this one. The story in Edge of Dark picks up decades after the earlier books. The setting is a solar system in which the most Earth-like planet, once nearly ecologically destroyed, is now in large part a wilderness preserve, still undergoing active restoration. Most humans live on massive space stations in the inner solar system. A few live on smaller space stations a bit further out, closer to the proverbial "Edge". And beyond that? Beyond that, far from the sun, dwell exiles, cast out long ago for violating social norms by daring to go too far in tinkering with the human mind and body.As the story progresses, it becomes clear that those exiles have grown in strength and have become, in some cases, not just transhuman, but truly posthuman. What follows is a story that is rich in politics, and even more rich in plausible, fascinating, and nuanced tensions created by this juxtaposition of human and posthuman. There are a tremendous number of stories out there that simple-mindedly posit post-humans as a grave threat and enemy to humanity. (Think "Terminator.") There are others that take a view that human and post- or trans- human can all learn to get along. (Think "X-Men".) Brenda Cooper has done something remarkable here: She's given us a story that isn't simple or moralistic. It's complicated. At the beginning of the book, I expected a simple morality play with a specific outcome. Later, I changed my mind. Then I changed it again. What she's presented is messy, just like real life. It's wound up with politics, just like real life. The early parts of the book introduce new characters and new settings. They later parts of the book are what grabbed me. In the end, I was extremely happy I read this. Edge of Dark is a unique view of the interaction of human and post-human in my experience. I recommend it highly.

Repeat business By Dr Peter Davies I bought and read this book without knowing it was the third in a series (The Creative Fire and The Diamond Deep are the first two volumes). It didn't matter, as the Edge of Dark is complete and self contained, and really very good. I had not expected a well written and thought-provoking book about AI and what it means to be human. The central characters, Nona and Charlie, are engaging and drawn with some depth. The Next began as humans uploaded into machines, but have evolved into almost classic AI. The story concerns the coming conflict between humans and the Next, and the blurry definitions that separate the two. No spoilers here - the story is well resolved and very satisfying. I finished it and went back to buy the first two volumes, and one from the authors other series - the Silver Ship and the Sea. Brenda Cooper earned the repeat business.

Sometimes referred to as the Ice Pirates, the Next were once a human creation, near autonomous robots that were banished to darkest edge of the solar system. Instead of guttering without light, the Next thrived. Now they’re turning back toward the sun. Some of them appear human, but they’re not. Their bodies are sexless constructs that don’t require sustenance of any sort. They don’t eat and they don’t breathe. They don’t sicken and they do not die. They’re stronger and faster, in all ways. But are they still individual beings? Are they what was once human or are they something else entirely? The fact that they don’t actually require a body to exist or may insert a copy of themselves into any construct that suits tends to weigh the argument on the side of ‘something else’.Edge of Dark by Brenda Cooper explores this argument. Set up as a novel of Science Fiction adventure, the story introduces us to three characters. Charlie is a ranger. Based on Lym, his job is to care for the planet’s carefully cultivated return to the wild. Lym is essentially a planetary nature reserve and stands as a lesson of what happens when nature isn’t respected and cared for. Nona hails from humanity’s other greatest achievement, Diamond Deep Station. She has the resources to buy Charlie’s dreams ten times over. Chrystal is a scientist. With her family of four, she embodies the big question when the Next capture her remote station and subsume the remaining population.Chrystal and her family are turned into these oddly human robots and through their struggle to accept their fate, we learn what the Next are and what they want. Nona and Charlie make up a part of the team who go to meet the Next to negotiate. The action isn’t as cut and dried as all that, however. Charlie’s agenda is clear from the start. Lym is the most important human resource. Chrystal is now a robot and though she recognises the advantages, she misses being human. Nona is a little less defined. It’s Nona’s lack of absolute purpose and drive that really slows this novel down, which is a shame as it’s an exciting set up and the concepts laid out to explore are fascinating. The reader is forced to grow at Nona’s pace, however. This leaves the other characters doing little to nothing for nearly a third of the book. Cooper could have started with Part II and we wouldn’t have missed much. Her characters are engaging and the time spent exploring their various habitats before the plot really kicked off is pleasant, but it’s not necessary. Pacing problems continue to dog the action in subsequent parts. My attention wandered often and, at times, I was tempted to simply skip forward and see how it all ended up.The concepts and questions are fascinating and when the action ramps up, the book works. The exploration of transhumanism is the big draw, however. While I longed the story to pick up and start running, I can’t say that I completely regretted the time exploring Chrystal’s new state of being. I also enjoyed the gentle commentary on sexuality and the idea that not all marriages were made between just two people.Edge Of Dark is the first book of a duology. I was unable to find any information regarding the second book, but there is definitely enough story to continue on with.

By Barth Dawe As a life-long fan of HPL..who has his favorites..both short and long, and has yet to read through the full depth and breadth of his works..this tale was a classic storyline and, whlie not exactly specifically in nature, telegraphed the ending.. It was different than I expected, but no surprise at all.. Does not, at all, mean that this is not a very well written tale of suspense and horror.. I imagine anyone new to his works would be suitably taken aback..

Herein are contained the first four episodes of the Freelance Saga Series. They chronicle the origin of Scott Hunter and show his journey through what amounts to an expanded tutorial in a perverted reality designed like a real-life virtual reality role playing game. Sexy monster girls, murderous rabbits, and burning biscuits abound! This story is slightly related to the story series known as Origin A.R.S.The connection is a minor thing, but it is part of a related concept that will include several different world settings with a similarly named main character. Consider these stories to be 'alternative universe settings' with a similar main lead. They are a collection of "What if" stories with a main character that has a lot in common with the other similarly named main characters, but each is their own existence with their own unique back story. Each story will also have their own 'litrpg' style of telling, but the 'game' concept is different in each one.

The first "episode" was cool, the sex scenes were a little suprising after having read the authors other series Origins. Episode 2 and 3 were very odd, hard to follow and each seemed to be very repetitive. The main character did not ever really do anything but think about things. I guess they gave some background on the world concept, but overall seemed to be very lacking. Episode 4 picked things back up, but seemed to be an overall rehash and restate of everything up to this point, except it also added a few more characters. The biggest problem I had with this set of books was the overall lack of action. After reading Origin this was an odd departure. We replaced solid action with some sex scenes but then took away about everything else. None of the characters were all that appealing and if there was much of a plot it was convoluted and hard to follow.I am still looking forward to more from this author, but would really enjoy more of the Origin series over this.

I am sorry that I did. This series is a waste of time. The story starts out in the first chapter with a strong foundation for a new LitRPG story but it quickly falls off from there, becoming disjointed and abandoning the game mechanics and progression for particularly bad erotica. My advice to the author is abandon this story line and focus on the Origin story.

There is a fairly good story idea, it has legs and it's a fun read. There is a fair bit of innuendo, but not much actual sex - more wouldn't hurt. Also, it's not very long. All 4 Episodes took an evening to read. Finally, there are a couple of places where the story jumps a bit inexplicably.A great bit of escapism, let's hope he writes more episodes.

The intensity of her keen glare as she took it all in, was breathtaking. In, an attempt to gain a healthy dose of confidence and self-esteem, Sugar found herself submerged into darkness. Her journey led her to an energetic corner, neighboring a gravel lot with insurmountable and scattered glass, hypodermic needles, and an overall sketchy environment. Her brilliant mind did it's best to warn her, firing off alarms as she had no business being there; she just didn't belong there. She blatantly ignored reason as, something more deeply-seeded had a pull on her. Her soul needed this. She was mesmerized by the tawdriness of this dearly departed and dilapidated building, as she knew there was a bright gem as rare as a canary diamond, neatly tucked away and hidden inside. She had every intention on finding and capturing it, as her tenacious spirit would not allow her to be defeated.

By Dione Basseri I'm glad I was able to find the publish date of this story, because it really helps the context and feel. That decade after WW2, where science was really picking up and the idea of robots didn't seem so impossible. Yet the notion that we'd change our social structure in any way was unthinkable.A jobless robot in a world that actively discriminates against them is elated to find a posting for a robot of his exact specifications. After navigating the dangers of the public, he finds that private business may be even more perilous. This does have that old sci-fi feel, which I'm not so much a fan of, thus the four stars. It just has such a limited notion of the abilities of robots, especially in regards to robots advanced enough to walk, talk, and go out seeking work. Also, searching for jobs in a newspaper when you're a robot, how quaint.I listened to the audio production from Librivox.

By Hello Happy This is a large set which recreates Noah and his ark — in folded-paper oriami figures. The set includes a large case with plentiful papers for creating the 13 figures of Noah and his wife, and 11 different animals to go along with them on the ark. The book provides basic instructions for origami generally and then walks through the steps needed to create each figure. Plus, there is the ark itself, which my daughter put together herself easily. I liked how the book includes a 26-page discussion of the story and research of Noah’s ark. We’ve already made Noah and a couple of the animals and are hoping to make them all.

It's a great time to introduce your kids to the Japanese Paper Art of Origami as they fast from electronics. Thunder Press has created an all-inclusive kit called "Noah's Art Origami" by Seth Friedman for $24.95. This is a family friendly activity with 100 sheets of printed origami paper to craft Noah, his wife, an ark and a giant cast of animal characters. A 112 page booklet of maps and historical information on Noah's Ark has enough detail for the geekiest of Bibilical Scholars. I loved the laminated paper Ark which could store all the origami creations once they were finished.I put my 10 year old son to work on making the origami creations. He rated it at an intermediate level of ability and he liked the nice, clear directions. In addition to the popular giraffe and elephant, I loved the look of the more creative origami creations such as a white spotted deer and a ram with a curly horn. My son's favorite origami creation was two sheet turtle which had green legs and a textured shell. My five year old melted over the origami rabbit. The origami directions come printed in a handy book, so I can easily save it and fold more paper bunnies for our mantle this Spring.Paper folding is such a gentle family activity. I find my pre-teens really benefit from the focus origami requires. My younger kids are amazed whenever they see flat paper turned into 3 D creations. If you are looking at more ways to avoid time on Netflix this Lent and keep your family more focused on Christ, a $25 investment in "Noah's Art Origami" might be a great gateway into this beautiful art form.

Each night we created an animal or human and talked about the different parts of the arch story. Then we kept the arch on a self in our house. Not As Detailed As Expected, But Still Worth Reading By Christy Ella I thought this book provided very basic information, and really just skimmed the surface of Etsy but, for me, it didn't live up to its title because it wasn't as detailed as expected. In order to fully understand how to have a sustainable business on Etsy from start to finish, the reader would need a lot more information than this book provides. There were no real in-depth business strategies presented as the title suggests, so I would consider this more of an introduction to Etsy, but it's worth reading, because it does contain some good, common sense tips and basic information.

3 of 3 people found the following review helpful. 4 Stars for Story, 1 for Edition By Bill R. Moore "The Three Strangers" is likely Hardy's most famous short work. However, I do not think it is one of his best and regret that it overshadows greater pieces. It is enjoyable to be sure - deftly plotted and superbly executed - but lacks the vibrant dramatization of weighty themes that characterizes his best work, relying primarily on a clever plot twist. Still, the opening has some of Hardy's most unforgettable prose, the suspense is unusually high, and the plot can perhaps be seen as a more conventionally exciting depiction of his central concerns. This is a story that those who do not usually like Hardy may especially enjoy. At any rate, though, it is available in many collections - e.g., The Withered Arm and Other Stories -, making it difficult to justify purchasing a standalone. Anyone interested in Hardy should read it but not necessarily here.

The story takes place in Providence, Rhode Island and revolves around the Church of Starry Wisdom. The cult uses an ancient artifact known as the Shining Trapezohedron to summon a terrible being from the depths of time and space. The Shining Trapezohedron was discovered in Egyptian ruins, in a box of alien construction, by Professor Enoch Bowen before he returned to Providence, Rhode Island in 1844. Members of the Church of Starry Wisdom in Providence would awaken the Haunter of the Dark, an avatar of Nyarlathotep, by gazing into the glowing crystal. Summoned from the black gulfs of chaos, this being could show other worlds, other galaxies, and the secrets of arcane and paradoxical knowledge; but he demanded monstrous sacrifices, hinted at by disfigured skeletons that were later found in the church. The Haunter of the Dark was banished by light and could not cross a lighted area. 1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. Read with the lights on. Forever. By Dione Basseri Lovecraft delivers a sick (though friendly) burn to a fellow writer who had previously inserted a Lovecraft-inspired character into his work. In that the main character of this story is styled after his fellow writer. And is tormented mercilessly.A young man becomes fascinated with an abandoned local church. On entering it, he somehow summons a creature from other realms, though it remains trapped inside the church so long as there is light to keep it at bay. The city always has a little light shining, but one night, a storm comes, and the power begins to flicker....While I commonly criticize Lovecraft stories for following the same template (explore scary area, face abominations, go mad), this one at least held my interest somewhat, as we know a bit more about the creature threatening the town. It has a weakness. Light. Simple, but also simple to lose that advantage. So, overall, I like it.This story is in the public domain and is available in many free formats. I listened to the free audio production available from the Drabblecast.

0 of 0 people found the following review helpful. Consummate Fantasy By Whizbang!! Lovecraft once wrote that the most merciful aspect of nature is that humans cannot correlate all of its manifestations. That is not to say literaturists and scientists have not tried. Witness in science: Quantum Theory, Relativity, String Theory, M-Theory, and with the recent discussion of Gravity Waves due to "Black Hole Collisions," such theories might become closer to the goal than a millionth of a billionth, billionth, billionth centimeters. In literature, there are the writings in Mysticism, Religion, Speculation, Philosophy and all the others. None of these endeavors has succeeded although the more dubious the reasoning the more "certain" solutions become. Physicists, for example, are not certain based on the most careful of mathematical reasoning that a Theory of Everything is possible at all, whereas Religionists consider doubt a weakness. In reading Lovecraftian Fantasy, one is allowed two alternatives: a. the melody b. the meaning. Specifically, the present volume, "The Hunter of the Dark" provides a treatment of the ultimate essence of the Universe from the point of view of an autodidact steeped in science who lets his imagination have free rein in expressing both melody and meaning. The paper and print manifestation of the story provides a delicious connection to volumes mentioned in the story, (Necronomican, etc.), and the reactions of the central character exemplify a human reaction to the meaning of experiencing the true nature of reality, free from comforting illusions, which is madness. From these points of view Lovecraft develops the experience with consummate skill. Any considerations beyond this specific are irrelevant. Lovecraft composes a kind of musical composition with tones based not only with the power of the Roman alphabet, but also the manifestations as fleeting images and other sensations in the mind of the reader produced by sequences of these symbols. And, in the end the reader is left to wonder whether a personal experience of the true nature of reality is advisable - thus, the ultimate nature of meaning. And, still further, Lovecraft's pantheon of "beings" develop far beyond the fleeting images provided in his other productions. One additional merit of, "The Haunter of the Dark" might cause the reader to investigate the writings of Kant, Husserl, Nietzsche, Satre, Darwin, Bohr, Feynman, Heisenberg, Pauli, Schrodinger, etc., etc. for further study.
