“The single most important and valuable Heinlein book ever published.”—Spider Robinson Robert A. Heinlein has been hailed as one of the most forward-thinking science fiction writers of all time, and Expanded Universe (presented in two volumes) offers the perfect collection of his works to provide readers with true insights into his uniquely creative mind. Heinlein personally selected each story or essay for inclusion in this collection, which is ordered chronologically, starting with his first sale in 1939 of “Life-Line” to Astounding (for seventy dollars). This remarkable collection highlights the development of Heinlein’s writing style and his philosophy on life throughout his career. More importantly, this collection is as close to an autobiography as anything Heinlein wrote during his life. Heinlein was an extremely private person who never wrote much about himself. In this exclusive collection, he offers forewords to most of his stories and essays (and an occasional afterword), giving readers a rare glimpse into the inner mind of the master. Expanded Universe is a must-have for any Heinlein enthusiast and any fan of science fiction. *** “From “Life-Line” (1939), one of his earliest works, to a tale of adventure on the moon (“Nothing Ever Happens On the Moon”), this collection demonstrates the formidable talent and irascible perceptions of one of the genre’s most outspoken writers.”—Library Journal “This is the book I’ve always wanted from Heinlein.” —John Bruni, GoodReads

This is only half the book By Jim Harris I have this book in hardback, and I was considering buying it for Kindle and Audible, but they have split the book into two parts and are selling it twice. I'm not going to buy it. To buy it would encourage publishers to take normal books and sell them twice in digital editions. That would be a horrible practice if it caught on. Shame on them.

But fellow readers, I have my reasons. The few stories in the collection are good RAH works. and worth a read or re-read/My objection and the reason for the lowered rating is that there are very few stories in this volume. Mostly it is a collection of very dated essays written by the master during he depth of the Cold War. The fact is these are so dated that they add very little to the volume.I just wish there had been some more short stories in this book and fewer of the extraneous essays.

The stories are good, the essays even better By gadget girl This is the second volume of Heinlein's Expanded Universe -- a collection of short stories and essays. The stories are good, the essays even better. I particularly enjoyed his look back at various predictions he had made -- some of which were accurate, some not so much. His evaluation of the education system in the USA is excellent, also.

Review ''The unassuming cleric, whose humble conviction that his God will eventually triumph over the souls of even the most evil of criminals, is the quiet but insistent heartbeat of these unusual exercises in detective fiction.'' --Sunday Times (London) on The Innocence of Father Brown

From the Publisher 8 1-hour cassettes

About the Author Gilbert Keith Chesterton was born in London, England, in 1874. He went on to study art at the Slade School, and literature at University College in London. Among his most notable books are "The Man Who Was Thursday", a metaphysical thriller, and "The Everlasting Man", a history of humankind's spiritual progress. After Chesterton converted to Catholicism in 1922, he wrote mainly on religious topics such as "Orthodoxy" and "Heretics". Chesterton is most known for creating the famous priest-detective character Father Brown, who first appeared in "The Innocence of Father Brown". Chesterton died in 1936 at the age of 62.

Kind little Father Brown By EA Solinas Most book detectives are either professional, or they don't have jobs and do detective work in their spare time. G.K. Chesterton's Father Brown is a little different -- a kindly, sweet little priest. In Chesterton's second Father Brown book, "The Wisdom of Father Brown," we get a series of bizarre, sometimes dangerous mysteries that Father Brown must puzzle out. Some of the crimes are simple once Brown explains them, but others are devious, chilling things that are wrapped in Chesterton's poetic prose. We're introduced to Father Brown when he comes into a famous criminologist's waiting room, and tells the man, "You see, her mother won't let her get engaged." The criminologist reluctantly assists the little priest in investigating a bizarre crime, involving a hat, a tied-up man, and a mysterious person called "Mr. Glass." The answer is a lot simpler than the criminologist believes. In the stories that follow, the priest investigates many other mysteries: a sinister voodoo cult, a nobleman with a deformed ear, a gang of Italian thieves, a lie-detector with one major problem (the operator), a girl who is blackmailed for a crime nobody knows she committed, a burning tower, a murder that may be suicide, and a man who is under a horrible death curse.G.K. Chesterton liked to write mysteries that were a lot simpler than they appeared to be, or else had some sort of bizarre twist at the end. Both kinds of mysteries show up in this collection of short stories, but only occasionally can readers guess what is going on, until Father Brown spells it out with some little detail of human nature. And Father Brown is a likable little guy, who looks like an "innocent goblin" and doesn't have to overwork himself to solve mysteries. It's his shrewd brain and rather childlike straightforwardness that carries him through, as well as his uncanny knowledge of human nature ("The reliable machine always has to be worked by an unreliable machine.... I mean Man").If there's a flaw, it's the rather dated racial descriptions, although those were typical of the time. Chesterton's writing is absolutely exquisite, like poetry rendered down into prose ("Over the black pine-wood came flying and flashing in the moon, a naked sword"), especially in the story where Father Brown and his pal take a cruise through the older areas of England."The Wisdom of Father Brown" is a lot like the kindly priest who does the detective -- brilliant, unassuming, and very intriguing. Definitely a must for mystery buffs.

Interesting collection of short mystery stories By SDD The Wisdom of Father Brown is an intriguing collection of mystery short stories centered around none other than Father Brown. These stories are normally fairly well set up, and inlcude good twists at the end that mystery readers would come to expect from good mystery authors. However, Chesterton takes quite a bit of time in setting up the story, which can amount to a bit of tedious reading sometimes. Yet, these vignettes end well and I am impressed with Chesterton's imagery and use of suspense. It also helps that this book is free. Overall, I would recommend this to any detective book fan.

4 of 4 people found the following review helpful. The Wisdom of Father Brown By sherlockholmesguy The Wisdom of Father Brown was written by G.K.Chesterton, a well known author of the 19th and 20th century. This is a collection of 12 totally seperate stories that are independent of each other but have one common thread. The constant is a quite small figure of a man named Father Brown, an English priest who just happens to be were the action is. He just shows up and gathers clues, primarily by noticing even the most obscure details and putting the case to bed. Actually, one of the best things about these stories is the clues are often disclosed in the story telling and the reader often can figure "who done it" before the ending. It is very much like the other Father Brown collection available from Kindle, namely "The Innocence of Father Brown", which also is a collection of independent stories by Chesterton. The stories are interesting, but short and can be read most easily one or two at a time and resumed again later. I would suggest that if you read the other Father Brown mysteries, you would equally enjoy this selection.

10 of 10 people found the following review helpful. Fourth time's the charm By Karl Janssen The Faith of Men was Jack London's fourth collection of short stories, first published in 1904. It is probably the best collection he published during his lifetime, and certainly the best of his Klondike stories. In these eight superb tales of the North, London augments age-old traditions of storytelling with innovative plots, unique characters, and authentic local color. Reading this book is like eavesdropping on the tales traded by fur trappers, prospectors, and sled-dog mushers over a pot of whiskey-tainted coffee at a long-forgotten arctic trading post.Though all the stories take place in or around the Yukon, they vary widely in tone. "A Relic of the Pliocene" is a lighthearted yarn in which Thomas Stevens--legendary hunter, drifter, and teller of tall tales--regales the fireside listener with his incredible first-hand account of stalking a woolly mammoth. "The One Thousand Dozen" is an edge-of-your-seat adventure about a San Francisco man who aims to make a small fortune by transporting 12,000 eggs up to famine-stricken Dawson, only to find the journey treacherous and his precious cargo constantly in peril. "Bâtard" is the story of a cruel dog and his cruel master, brought together by fate to make each other's lives a living hell as they anticipate their inevitable fatal showdown. It is one of the most brutal stories ever written by London, an author renowned for his brutal stories. These three masterpieces, though incredibly different in style, all prove that London was an absolute master of the art of storytelling at this point in his career. The weakest story in the book is "The Marriage of Lit-Lit," simply because it's London's umpteenth take on the theme of white-hero-bargains-for-Indian-bride, though it's better written than most of his forays into that topic. In contrast, "The Story of Jees Uck," about a romance that develops between a trading post operator and a young Native American woman of mixed ancestry, is anything but stereotypical heroic fantasy. It's London's most realistic portrayal of a native/white relationship, and a touching tale of love and loyalty, masterfully told with surprising sensitivity and frankness. The other three entries in the book--"A Hyperborean Brew", "The Faith of Men", and "Too Much Gold"--are all four-star stories in their own right, and feel right at home in this stellar collection. The Faith of Men is a must read for any fan of London or any lover of classic literature who appreciates the art of the short story.

The major motif across the stories is very similar: man, his hardships and follies both caused by himself, others, misprints and the inclement conditions of the Yukon Territory in Canada. The predominant settings and themes are generally related to the Klondike Gold Rush during the late 1800’s (circa-1896) to the early 1900’s, most of the characters are prospectors of some variety or another and many of their ends are taken very stoically, in standard London fashion.Fantastic stories about the cruelty of fate, men, women abandoned, money, it’s pursuit and the great north, all of which offer an excellent expose as it relates to a man’s tenacious mindset and how sometimes it all works out; sometimes it doesn’t. This collection provides a really good mix of human ugliness and hope.Stories include:1. A Relic of The Pliocene.2. A Hyperborean Brew.3. The Faith of Men.4. Too Much Gold.5. The One Thousand Dozen.6. The Marriage of Lit-Lit.7. Batard.8. The Story of Jees Uck.SPOILERS:A Relic of The Pliocene: One of two stories which stem from Thomas Stevens, an evident veteran of the Yukon territory and a man whom never outright lied but certainly embellished the truth. London relays the story Stevens had told him about how he’d personally killed off the last of the mammoths, this based upon a conversation they’d began about Steven’s fantastic moccasins. Entrapping the mammoth and running him around a track to wear him down Stevens tires him out enough to finish the job started in the name of retribution – because the mammoth had killed off his dog and her pups, an entirely new breed.A Hyperborean Brew: Another tale about Tomas Stevens and his underling, Moosu. Having crafted alcohol and entertaining the people in therapeutic doses it opened to them the way to God. A competitor attempts this, but his liquor is weak. Moosu soon lets his power go to his head, as he was put in a Shamanic position by Stevens, and he soon begins to contest Stevens at each turn. Through many evenings Stevens wastes away the stores of meat and grains he’s acquired for sale of his brew, and he, one particular evening allows the entire village to part-take in the drunkenness. He then feigns apologetic supplication to Moosu, how has said that the meat in Stevens stores will be given them by the Gods. When there is no meat to give, as the prophet wouldn’t have suggested, the drunken and angry villagers turn on Moosu. He’s spirited away from the village by Stevens, who’s whipping him for his multitude of crimes. The Faith of Men: Lawrence Pentfield and Corry Hutchinson, millionaire panners on the Yukon are dropping dice to see which gets to depart the encampment for the season, the other will stay behind and supervise the work. Hutchinson wins the draw and Pentfield asks a favor: find Mable Holmes and bring her to Dawson (Yukon Terr.) so that Pentfield may wed her. Sending Hutchinson off, he gets many words from him regarding his travels and finding Mabel. Then one evening he is shown an article about Hutchinson’s wedding to Mable Holmes, only a little dismayed he takes a bride of his own, a Native American woman. Encountering Corry, Mable and her sister soon after this he discovers that the papers he’d read had mistaken the sisters identities. Without the bat of an eye Pentfield informs Mable that he’s already off market, but he’s sorry about the mistake.Too Much Gold: Kirk Mitchell and Hootchinoo Bill head back to their hometown of ‘Forty Mile’ only to find it completely deserted with the exception of one man. This man informs them that the townsfolk split because of rumors of gold in Dawson on the Bonanza Creek (Yukon Terr.). First the two vouchsafed any interest in the rush, as time elapsed they too decided it most prudent to see what the fuss was about. Having staked a plot on ‘Too Much Gold’ (think El Dorado, a mythical land) they two run hard on luck and eventually sell it to a Swede whom they had to liquor-up to make the deal. Selling the lot for $750 in gold-dust and refusing to give the money back to a now sober Swede the two are astounded to find the Swede, Andersen, with ‘too much gold.’The One Thousand Dozen: Making plans to purchase and deliver one-thousand dozen eggs to Dawson so that he might resell them, Rasmunsen aligns all the logistical and physical material necessary to ensure this happens. The story then proceeds from one difficult hardship to another as Rasmunsen attempts to transport the eggs via sea and again via land. Arriving in Dawson and being heralded as ‘The Egg Man’ (1053) he makes a quick $1.50 PER egg! It is soon discovered that while all the eggs survived the perils of the journey they had also gone bad. Expecting to make some $18,000 and then being offered a mere $200 so they could be fed to the dogs after all the work, injury, danger and a grand idea – Rasmunsen ends the scene by taking his own life. The Marriage of Lit-Lit: John Fox engages Snettishane, Lit-Lit’s father, in discourse about marriage. She comes at a steep price and Snettishane, the conniving fellow that he is convinces Lit-Lit to marry him. He then requests she come to him during the nights he ‘calls like a raven’ so that she may feign her unhappiness and whereby Snettishane will raise the price for her, telling Fox she is worth more than what he’d originally bequeathed. Lit-Lit fails her father’s callings because she realizes Fox is a good man and soon the calling of the ‘raven’ irritates Fox, who proceeds to shoot at the sound. Failing to kill Snettishane, he sends him off never to be heard from again.Batard: A story about a wolf hybrid who is picked up by the most miserable man imaginable – Black Leclere. A tale of abuse where Leclere’s mission is to ‘break him’, to get Batard to submit to his whim and be a simple minded dog. The story details many of their encounters and abuses conducted to one another. Having been erroneously convicted of murder Leclere is made to stand atop a box with the noose still on while the actual culprit is sought. Here Batard has his change, and where Leclere figured his hound would precede him to hell, it is in fact the opposite. The Story of Jees Uck: This tale is much like ‘The Faith of Men’, only Jees Uck and Neil Bonner were married prior to Bonners departure to his hometown – San Francisco. Jees Uck waits a few years, works many jobs and saves money so that she and her child ‘Neil’ or ‘Nee-al’ can travel to find Bonner. She rejects other suitors, sees her credit depreciated and through hardship finds Bonner wed to another woman. There is no effrontery, Jees Uck doesn’t acknowledge that the child is Bonner’s and his San Francisco wife doesn’t get the total picture, but he figures it out. Jees Uck returns home and the story ends with the child succeeding across many realms of his life.

By S Herding cats gives you 5 short stories all unsurprisingly about cats. These are 'Herding Cats', 'The Missing Cat', 'Sibling Rivalry', 'Chicken? .. for the soul' and 'It's raining cats and dogs'.Each story is accompanied by pictures of the cats which have been put through various photoshop style effects (e.g. pencil, blue frame bleed out, sparkle, sepia etc). While the photos are lovely, I'm not sure the artistic twist adds anything to them. In particular they don't translate well on the older kindles. I imagine they would be much more at home on the newer Kindle Fire. The stories are very much on the flash fiction end of the scale being from two to eight pages worth of print equivalent, and each is written in a first person style that is reflective and casual. One aspect that could have been improved here is formatting. The stories are presented as a wall of text with no ident to break up the paragraphs which is easily recitifable and would improve the readibility of the work. The stories however are well edited. Each is very much a personal anecdote, and recounts the authors relationship with their pet while also indulging in some local flavour that helps add realism to the setting (such as the Scottish rail network in the first story).I particularly liked the recounting of The Missing Cat which in my opinion was by far the strongest of the stories. Unfortunately this particular story is the last one in the ebook which means none of it makes it into the preview, so you'll have to buy it to find out if Daisy Hetherington is reunited with her beloved cat. The human element is also well done here with the daughter, and is quite touching.A good collection, but the execution in kindle could have been a little better. I'd rate this one at 3.5 stars.

A collection of short stories that either contain or come from the perspective of our feline friends, deftly written and full of depth and emotion. To be honest I wasn't sure what to expect, but these stories are lovely. Some sweet, some sad, but all of them are definitely written from the heart. Mr. Gibson shares his intimate moments with us. These are beautifully written tales and I found myself looking forward to the next tale when the previous had ended. I loved that some of the stories were from the perspective of the cat and some from the human. The story based on the title is about an older cat, with two siblings, who are much younger and make his life quite difficult, but as we read, we realize this "wise-old cat" may not be so wise or so old, engaging in his own "tom-foolery". It is beautifully written and intriguing. The Missing Cat was a wonderful story of loss and love, the ending took me completely by surprise.I haven't read "animal" tales since I was a little girl, my mom had me reading Albert Payson Terhune (on of her faves - which also became mine), but these aren't just for children. They are about what we all think about and dream about, just from a different perspective. If you are looking for a series of engaging tales full of emotion and depth, look no further.Herding Cats is simply lovely.

A Catty Collection By Nyssa This book consists of several very short stories about cats and some photographs and drawings of cats. The stories are "It's Raining Cats and Dogs," "Herding Cats," "Chicken?..for the Soul," "Sibling Rivalry," and "The Missing Cat." My favorite of the group was "Sibling Rivalry" with "Chicken?..for the Soul" the runner-up. All except "Missing Cat" spotlight the sometimes odd (to humans) behavior of the cats in their lives.I'll admit that I liked the pictures and drawings of the cats even more than the stories. Who can resist a cute kitten or a pouncing kitty? All of the stories are suitable for children, although a few of the British turns-of-phrase might need to be explained to some children.Recommended for animal lovers who are often mystified by the behavior of their cats.

The Portal shows you images that haunt your waking moments, as well as your dreams. The Portal wants you to gaze within, but when you do, you will never be the same. When the Order of Nirangi opens a portal into a hellish realm, they tempt far more than fate. The portal, created by a bizarre, ringed machine that tears into the fabric of spacetime itself, shows the Nirangi scientists a glimpse into a realm covered in roiling lava lakes and volcanos, leaving them petrified and humbled. Only Madam Viragat, the project overseer, is unconcerned, clearly bent on using their recording of the glimpse to scare the populous into submission. Despite incomplete data, she insists that the hellish realm they saw was the spiritual abyss, the fate of the unsanctified after death. Only Sujan, a brilliant young scientist, is willing to investigate further. To his shock, he makes a discovery that rocks his world to its core… What Top Reviewers Say… “Readers can feel how much thought he has put into all the details of this alternate world — even details we can't yet ‘see’…I can hardly wait to find out what happens next!” -- Tui Snider, Author of ‘Paranormal Texas’ “I thoroughly enjoyed this one. The story gets going quickly and puts forth big questions for the reader to ponder without pushing a specific opinion. I really appreciate it when an author lets me get there on my own, a subtle but complex part of the craft.” -- Anela (Creator of AmidtheImaginary) “As a reader of the Aravinda books, I enjoyed the new angle on the galaxy this story offered…I'm sure it would also work as a good introduction for any new comers to the series.” -- M.M. Stauffer (Tatterwing Chronicles author) “Sci-Fi with an ethical purpose for the 21st century! The author’s work has been called Transcendental Science Fiction, and with good reason.” -- Flavia Westermann, Amazon Reviewer

It plays with some neat ideas that as far as I've seen are unique for a sci fi. As a reader of the Aravinda books, I enjoyed the new angle on the galaxy this story offered, but I'm sure it would also work as a good introduction for any new comers to the series.

Enjoyed this in one sitting and I can't wait to read about what happens next By Billy Horn This novella is great I instantly became intrigued with the story, the struggle, the unknown. It's cool to find a science fiction incorporating aspects of today's physical and social technology along with the new creative ideas and inventions you would expect to discover in a new world. So much happens in this small amount of time I feel like I just watched the first episode in a tv show I can't wait to binge watch.

By Anela This novelette was provided to me by the author for review. At around 11,000 words, a novelette is in many ways more difficult to write than a novel. In a short span of time the author has to grab the reader’s attention, build a world (or in this case, a universe), introduce the main characters and their motivations, and go through the paces of a compelling plot. Every word has to count…and in this example the author makes it look easy. We’re taken to the Aravinda galaxy where the Nirangi have made an amazing discovery. Depending on how it is used, it will have wide spread ramifications on their world, their people and their culture. The story grapples with some big themes between science and religion. It posits the question as to whether truth is not merely of societal importance but a moral obligation. And if that is the case, is one then compelled to speak when a lie is uncovered? A poignant scene reminiscent of Galileo standing before the Catholic Church brings this idea to a head. As the story points out, courage is not standing up for something when it costs nothing. Courage is standing up for something knowing there will be great, personal consequences, and still finding truth worth more than safety and acceptance. No slouching here, this novelette does the genre proud!I thoroughly enjoyed this one. The story gets going quickly and puts forth big questions for the reader to ponder without pushing a specific opinion. I really appreciate it when an author lets me get there on my own, a subtle but complex part of the craft. An intermingling of the philosophies of science and religion, courage and truth, woven together in a science-fiction universe. Artfully done.Amid The Imaginary: https://amidtheimaginary.wordpress.com/

Robogenesis, by Daniel H. Wilson

From Booklist *Starred Review* Wilson’s Robopocalypse (2011), which told the story of a sentient artificial intelligence’s plot to wipe out humanity via the narratives of various characters, became something of a pop-culture sensation. It’s a good novel, but its sequel is superior in every way. The author preserves the oral-history structure and keeps several of the characters from the first book (including Cormac Wallace and Mathilda Perez), but he veers off in a new and frightening direction. The story is set in the years immediately after the New War; Archos R-14, the AI who very nearly destroyed the human race, is dead, but that doesn’t mean humanity’s troubles are over. Here’s the short list: a civilization to rebuild; a growing discord between robotically modified humans (victims of Archos’ horrific experiments) and the unmodified; dangerous robotic creatures running rampant; and a new kind of threat, one even more dangerous than Archos. The writing here is much more visceral and polished than it was in the earlier novel. In fact, the first several pages of this book’s first chapter, in which a character is attacked by a robotic parasite, are more frightening and more memorable than the entirety of Robopocalypse. An astounding novel. --David Pitt

25 of 28 people found the following review helpful. Excellent read - better than the first By Jonathan Hurst Some background: I'm a professor of Robotics. My whole career is saturated with robots, and what we want robots to be.This book is excellent, for two reasons: 1) It's a great story, off the beaten path of "terminator robots sent to kill humans because... I dunno, robots are evil." Instead, there's a complexity to the technological characters that is really unique in literature. 2) The technology and ideas are plausible!!! Most of the time, I don't read a lot of science fiction any more, because as soon as something impossible is presented as part of the story, I have a hard time suspending disbelief, and I get bumped out of the story. That was not the case here. I was actually surprised with new ideas about a possible future of the world with robots, with only a few minor cases of disbelief-suspension for the sake of enjoying a good fiction. I enjoyed Robopocalypse, but Robogenesis is better. It's rare that a sequel is better than the first book.

15 of 18 people found the following review helpful. Engaging, fun . . . won't change your life, but hey, it's summertime By jk I'll be honest. I enjoyed the heck out of this book which sitting in the sunshine by the pool in Mexico. I'm not going to write a paper on it, read too deeply into the relationship between man and machine, or the blurred lines of consciousness, humanity, and technology, but it's a page turner (or rather 'edge toucher' since I'm on a Kindle).

8 of 9 people found the following review helpful. there are robot/human zombies, which may be a plus for some readers By She Treads Softly Robogenesis by Daniel H. Wilson is a highly recommended sequel to Robopocalypse - and there are robot/human zombies, which may be a plus for some readers. "In its last days, the thinking machine known as Archos R-14 was trying to know humanity. It mastered the art of capturing a human mind. When it died, it left behind the tools. I found stories trapped in patterns of neurons. Using scavenged hardware, I took three accounts straight from three minds and I lined them up from beginning to end and back again. Three times to tell it. Three times to understand. They say history is written by the victors, but this right here is told by its victims. My name is Arayt Shah, and this is the story of how I won the True War."In Robogenesis we learn that artificial intelligence Archos-14 has survived the war. What was unknown after the war was that Archos had many copies of his code hidden in caches around the world. Now that code is awakening, but there is also an earlier version of Archos which calls itself Arayt Shah. Arayt Shah believes that the True War is between artificial intelligences. "I decimated the human race, regrettably. But I did so with one purpose: to forge a hybrid fighting force capable of surviving the True War—a war that has been initiated and is being fought by superintelligent machines. Instead of simply discarding your species, as the others would, I have transformed your kind into a powerful ally."While you thought the Robot War was just between humans and robots, it is robots vs. new robots vs. freeborn robots. Add to the mix humans against the not-quite human modifieds and parasitic dead (think robot/human zombies) as well as the robots. The idea of sentient machines fighting humans, with or without the machine/human zombies, is a grim enough prospect.Robogenesis is organized into three parts, based on three characters that were also in Robopocalypse: Lark Iron Cloud, Mathilda Perez, and Cormac Wallace. There are also other characters from the first book that come back for this sequel along with some new characters. Although Wilson provides some back story, if you haven't read the first book you may want to before this one.I felt like Robogenesis was actually a stronger novel than the first because the stories and the plot seemed more focused and polished, however this could be from reading the two novels back to back. The pace is again fast and furious. There is still a Terminator feel to these novels for me (and World War Z for others). For science fiction fans this may be a good choice. Wilson has a PhD in Robotics so he knows his AI. I liked this one but have to admit I'm tired of the whole zombie craze. A solid airplane book.Disclosure: My Kindle edition was courtesy of Knopf Doubleday for review purposes.

Piper in the Woods, by Philip K. Dick

About the Author Philip K. Dick (1928-1982) was an American science-fiction novelist, short-story writer and essayist. A contemporary of Ursula K. Le Guin, Dick's first short story, "Beyond Lies the Wub," was published shortly after his high-school graduation. Many of Dick's works drew upon his personal experiences with drug abuse, addressing topics such as paranoia and schizophrenia, transcendental experiences and alternate reality, and the childhood death of his twin sister is reflected through the recurring theme of the "phantom twin" in many of his novels. Despite ongoing financial troubles and issues with the IRS, Dick had a prolific writing career, winning both the Hugo Award and the Nebula Award multiple times. Some of his most famous novels and stories--A Scanner Darkly, "The Minority Report," "Paycheck," and Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep? (adapted into the film Blade Runner)--have been adapted for film. Dick died in 1982.

3 of 3 people found the following review helpful. It's not easy being green By J Taylor A staff of stressed out space workers have delusions of turning into plants. A fun sci-fi story about making an escape from modern life.

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. cool premise, but it fails to deliver By terziev This short story has a really quirky and neat idea - humans suddenly become plants. There are several great one liners such as “Corporal, you must realize that there are very few men who become plants, especially on such short notice.” , but it gets bogged in unnecessary details and just poor writing style. Overall I had the feeling I am reading some draft version. Still this is one of the earliest P. Dick stuff and his original style is evident. It is mostly for fans of P. Dick, the rest will hardly appreciate it.

0 of 0 people found the following review helpful. Who am I? By Timothy Marvin Coplin Science fiction short story. Terra-forming soldiers garrisoned on asteroid Y3 are slipping into a state of uselessness. One by one and at an ever increasing rate, the workers are turning into plants. This isn't a physical transformation; rather, the mind is slipping into a 'vegetative' state. Result: refusal to work, abandoning their responsibilities, putting the entire garrison and its mission at jeopardy.Back on Terra, Dr. Henry Harris is charged with finding the cause of, and solution to this problem. After submitting the vegetative subjects to shock treatment, Dr. Harris was able to learn the source of the problem; and, upon visiting the garrison he is able to confirm that source - Pipers. Dr. Harris further diagnoses the Pipers as imaginative entities upon which the subjects are projecting blame for their desire to revert to useless social subjects.Solution: psychotherapy - cause the subjects to become self-aware. Once the subjects become self-aware, the Pipers will vanish.Read on to see what happens next.Nice commentary on social entitlements which give rise to laziness, despondence, and dependence upon others. In actuality, it is this readers firm belief that the teaching and glorification of evolutionary theory has done much to destroy humanities self-awareness. Creatures that are created in the image of God, as taught in Christian scripture, ought not be led to believe that they are nothing more than the latest step on a never ending chain of happenstance. How does that breed self-awareness? How does that spark hope and desire? How is that ever good for a society, let alone an individual.Great read.
