While her best friend is pulled into the supernatural underworld, Branwyn isn’t about to sit on the sidelines. Unfortunately, Branwyn is decidedly mortal, and in the supernatural underworld, humans are weak and helpless, no better than toys, tools and prey. But she isn’t having any of that. Branwyn wants to face the world on her own terms, mortal or not. When she strikes a bargain with an imprisoned faerie, Branwyn thinks she’s found the solution. He’ll teach her magic and she’ll use that magic on his behalf. It’s a great deal, until she discovers what the faeries really want from her: there’s a door that only she can open…

Infinity Key (Senyaza Series Book 2), by Chrysoula Tzavelas

Review "... in a genre that tends to emphasize young women's romances with male supernatural beings, this focus on female friendship and solidarity is deeply refreshing."  -Publishers Weekly

About the Author "Chrysoula Tzavelas works very hard to write books that are both fun to read and have real heart. She hopes you enjoy them."Doesn't that sound nice? Completely true, of course. If you'd like to know a little more about me, I live near Seattle, I have a dog, three cats, a husband, a housemate, and two little boys. When I'm not writing or chasing around children, I... well, theoretically I read, play video games and RPGs, knit and color. But I have to fight for that time.

As we know, UF is about a young girl falling truly and deeply in love with a mysterious vampire or other creature (except a zombie, ick) and overcoming obstacles to be together forever. This is Branwyn, and she refuses to play that game. The book takes place soon after Matchbox Girls, which was Marley's book, and I like the change in point of view--even things we're familiar with get a new light cast on them. I commented on how much I liked the magic in the last book, and we get a new flavor with this book--a crafting--which isn't as complex but is still satisfyingly different. I don't think it's a spoiler to say this book is about saving Penny. (Don't worry if you haven't read the first book--context gives you all you need to know.) Time is running out for her. Action Girl is up for the job, always ready for whatever's next, and I tore through this book quickly, caught up in her wake. There's no way I could have waited until I had all three of these books to read them together, but I kind of wish I had.

By Rachel Gollub This was an excellent follow up to Matchbox Girls, and follows Branwyn in the aftermath, as the world begins to change. The voice of the book is surer in this one, and I love Branwyn's ability to do the unexpected.

Fenn Earlier this year, I read Chrysoula Tzavelas‘ debut novel, Matchbox Girls, enjoying it quite a bit. You can see my thoughts on that book here, if you like.Infinity Key is the sequel to Matchbox Girls, the second book in Tzavelas’ Senyaza series. It takes up where the first book ended, but stands alone pretty well. Tzavelas’ does a good job of catching readers up to the plot, although that aspect does feel a little stiff in spots. Infinity Key follows Branwyn Lennox in her quest to rescue her friend who has fallen into a coma thanks to an angel with ill intent consuming her soul. Branwyn is the Action Girl to Marley Claviger’s Research Girl, some of which we got to see in MG. Branwyn shines in Infinity Key, though, and I’m really glad she got to be the star of her own book.In order to achieve her quest, Branwyn makes a deal with a lord of Faerie and has to contend with his ulterior motives, a host of adversaries, plus her own family and a worried Marley who wants to protect her, but can’t without her permission. Part of the deal is that Tarn (the lord) shows Branwyn how to affect matter magically instead of physically (“dreams and metaphysics” meshing with “iron and steel and titanium.”).Infinity Key is a good read, and much of that is thanks to the character of Branwyn Lennox. I found her to be a ton of fun because she really does live up to her nickname of Action Girl. She’s not one to mope and fret about what to do. She just does.Which gets her into all sorts of trouble as she has to tangle with powerful kaiju, Severin (who we met in Matchbox Girls) and the Hunter. While these are not the traditional kaiju from Japanese horror movies, they are still monsters. The scene in chapter 16 where Branwyn actually sees what lurks under the guises these two show the human world is chilling. And while the characters are quite different, the attraction between Branwyn and Severin reminds me a smidge of that between Yeine Darr and the Nightlord in N.K. Jemisin’s The Hundred Thousand Kingdoms. Just something about the terror lurking underneath, although with Severin, that terror isn’t restrained by anything. One of the things I like about Infinity Key is that Branwyn’s attractions (she and Tarn have sparks (perhaps less frightening) happening, too) aren’t the center of the story. They’re there, but this isn’t a romance novel. Branwyn’s main focus is her dying friend. Saving her is what matters.Branwyn also has to deal with other lords of Faerie, one of whom goes after her family. Apparently, Branwyn’s badassedness is genetic; her sisters are not people to mess with, either. As with Matchbox Girls, the prose of Infinity Key is a pleasure to read, for the most part. Tzavelas’ comes up with some wonderful imagery: “handmade paper that smelled of the ocean” and eyes “gleaming like a new-wakened predator’s,” for example. Also, interesting uses of words: “acrid light”, sparkling winds, and a “faulted coast.” I took that last to mean California. What a fun choice. My disappointments with Infinity Key are few. Occasionally, the writing stumbles, but hey, we can’t all be Ursula Le Guin. I also missed a few of the characters from Matchbox Girls—Corbin especially—but the characters we do meet and the ones we get to know better helped make up for that.Infinity Key is a fun, fast-paced urban fantasy tale. It’s a good successor to Matchbox Girls. I’m very much looking forward to reading the next book in the Senyaza series, Wolf Interval.

I really enjoyed reading this book and I would recommend it to all people who would like to grow plants on their own.

I was trying to do some research on my own about aquaponics but it was so much better to have all the information organized into this great book! I definitely recommend this book!

0 of 0 people found the following review helpful. The usual shallow, incomplete, "Googled" information that passes for publishing nowadays. Pass on it. By Nunja Business Typical "copied and pasted" information from other people's work and not from the "author's" own knowledge. In places, it even reads like a bad translation from some other language to English. Also the author is apparently clueless enough to think that there are "warm blooded" fish you can raise. That would be difficult since the first truly warm blooded, or "endothermic" fish (Moonfish) was JUST DISCOVERED to be so. It is a Pacific deep-water fish so you will not be raising them in your aquaponics project. (Some tuna and sharks can warm their muscles - but it is not the same). So basically, nothing new or revolutionary or even all that educational here that you couldn't surpass with a simple Bing or Google search.Good thing it was free or I would be demanding my money back!

Sozaeva H G Wells wrote and published this book of short stories in 1895; the first book he published, if I remember correctly. The writing style is typical Wells - just like he was sitting in front of you telling you a tale - and the stories themselves are quite entertaining. The topics range from an Anarchist set to destroy London by stealing a vial of cholera bacilla (the title story) to a man describing his time on a deserted island and how he hatched out an egg that had been preserved for 400 years. I think my favorite was the taxidermist story, just because it was really twisted :-) Give this book a try - it's a great introduction to the writings of a classic author of truly tremendous standing.

Excellent collection of tales By Steven Wilber I really enjoyed this collection of 15 tales which range from a different way of looking at every day events, to high adventure (complete with buried treasure), mystery, magic, and science fiction. There is something for everyone in this collection. These tales show imagination and all are beautifully written in Wells' classical style. One of H.G. Wells' biggest strengths is his ability to paint a picture with words. The reader is very much able to visualize what is going on, whithout being told every single detail.A must read collection for fans of H.G. Wells and classic SciFi alike.Personal favorites in this collection include "The Lord of the Dynamos", "Trough A Window", and "The Treasure in the Forest".

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. Early Collection Of Stories From Wells By Dave_42 Technically, "Select Conversations With An Uncle" which was published earlier in 1895 was Wells' first collection of stories, but the stories from that collection have largely been forgotten, while this collection, "The Stolen Bacillus and Other Incidents", contains a few stories which have long been remembered as early classics. The fourth of four books published in 1895, this collection contains 15 works of short fiction which were originally published between December of 1893, and March of 1895, mostly in "Pall Mall Budget" (or "Pall Mall Gazette"), but there is one story which was published originally in "Black and White" and one from "The St. James Gazette".The collection opens with "The Stolen Bacillus", a short story which can definitely be considered science fiction. In this an unnamed visitor of a Bacteriologist preys on the Bacteriologists ego to boast about the dangerous strains of bacteria he has on hand. The visitor turns out to be an anarchist who steals a vial with bacteria to use as a weapon, resulting in a chase, with a surprise ending. Published originally in "The Pall Mall Budget" on June 21st of 1894, this story predicts the fears of terrorists using biological weapons. The next story is "The Flowering of the Strange Orchid", another science fiction story, in which a man (Winter-Wedderburn) is tired of having an uneventful life and purchases some orchids from a collector who died, one of which is a very unusual specimen and provides him with an event in his life which he so desperately wanted. Published on August 2nd of 1894 in "The Pall Mall Budget", this story is an early example of using a previously unknown species as subject-matter.Next up is "In The Avu Observatory", which was published on August 9th of 1894 in "The Pall Mall Budget". This story, like the one before uses an unusual species as subject-matter. In this case it is a large bat-like creature which attacks an astronomer's assistant during a night when he is alone making observations."The Triumphs Of A Taxidermist" was published on March 3rd of 1894, and unlike the previous stories this one is not really science fiction. Here it is a narrator telling of a conversation he had with a Taxidermist, who admitted he had created "new species" in order to satisfy his clients."A Deal In Ostriches" was published on December 20th of 1894 in "The Pall Mall Budget". This story is also not science fiction, but it is a clever story (again told by a taxidermist, but not clear if it is meant to be the same one) about how an Ostrich was worth three hundred pounds."Through A Window", published in "Black and White" on August 25th, 1894 is like an early version of "Rear Window". Here we have a man (Bailey) who is immobilized due to an injury who watches a manhunt through his window."The Temptation of Harringay" was published in "The St. James Gazette" on February 9th of 1895. This fantasy story is about an artist who is desperate to paint a subject he has created in his mind, but who cannot get it right. The Devil comes to him and tries to buy the artist's soul with the promise of a few masterpieces."The Flying Man" was published in December of 1893 in "The Pall Mall Gazette". This is a story told from the point of view of a lieutenant who is explaining how he gained a reputation among the natives as "a flying man"."The Diamond Maker" was published on August 16th of 1894 in "The Pall Mall Budget". In this science fiction story, the narrator relates the tale of a man who has invented a means of making his own diamonds."Æpyornis Island" was published on December 27th of 1894 in "The Pall Mall Budget". Similar to the two stories earlier, this one again uses an unusual species as subject-matter, though in this case the story is much better thought out and developed. Here the narrator tells the story of how he found the bones of an Æpyornis.Next up is my personal favorite in the book, "The Remarkable Case of Davidson's Eyes", which was published in "The Pall Mall Budget" on March 28th of 1895. In this story, the title character (Davidson), after a lightning strike, is not able to see what is in front of him, but instead sees a tropical scene. Over time he eventually recovers, but later he meets someone who tells him a story which describes what he had seen perfectly."The Lord of the Dynamos" was published on September 6th, 1894, in "The Pall Mall Budget". This is another good story, about a poor foreign laborer who comes to worship the large Dynamo where he works."The Hammerpond Park Burglary" is a clever story about a thief (Teddy Watkins) who is trying to steal Lady Aveling's jewels. It was published originally in "The Pall Mall Budget" on July 5th of 1894."A Moth - Genus Novo" was published in "The Pall Mall Budget" on March 28th, of 1895. This is another good story about two rival scientists who have a professional feud, which is ended by the untimely death of one of them. The other then is tormented by a new species of Moth which he is unable to capture, and which nobody else is able to see.The collection closes with "The Treasure In The Forest", which was published in "The Pall Mall Budget" on August 23rd of 1894. This is the story of two men (Evans and Hooker) who overhear a discussion of a treasure, and then make the mistake of trying to rush ahead and recover it first. This is far from the best collection of Wells' short stories, but it is interesting because you can see some of his development as a writer between the earliest stories in this collection, and those which were written later on. This is true even though it isn't even two years between the publication of the first and last stories. Though some of these stories would be considered speculative fiction, many of them are fairly standard short stories.

The Darkness is a fast-paced story of survival that brings the apocalypse to Main Street USA. While the world falls apart, Jacob Anderson barricades his family behind locked doors. Jacob Anderson is an ordinary man who sits at home, watching while Chicago is over run by what the news media calls 'rioters'. He waits until the rioters continue taking over more and more territory, spreading throughout the country side. Jacob and many others believe the law enforcement or military will soon quell what ever is going on. Until it arrives on his door step then it becomes obvious he waited just a little too long to leave the false safety of his home particularly when it hits his suburban neighborhood. When a military convey arrives to evacuate survivors he prepares to leave with his family. Unfortunately they are attacked and he is separated from them. With two national guardsmen, Murphy and Stephenson, also cut off from their unit Jacob joins them as they make their way across a city that has been over run. Jacob soon learns what he thought were just rioters are no longer human and to be caught by them is a fate worse than death. It is a non-stop night long battle as around every corner, every shadow could hide the seemingly unstoppable inhuman enemy whose sole purpose is to capture them. The fight scenes keep you on edge and are realistic enough to keep you wanting to know what happens next. This is not another zombie series but one with a twist that will leave the reader wanting to know more and just where it will all lead.

It's more Night of the Living Dead meets the Puppet Masters. It has a fast paced plot with plenty of twists to keep you turning the pages. I read the entire story in just two sittings. The protagonist, Jacob, makes the classic "Hero's Journey" which gives him an interesting and entertaining character arch. He begins the story as an everyman, a set-up engineer who trouble shoots factory assembly lines and he ends the story transformed into the wounded warrior willing to sacrifice for those he cares about. My one criticism of The Darkness is that it is maybe too plot driven. The protagonist's change from cowering civilian hiding in his attic to gallant solider was a bit too seamless. Having read other works by Lundy, I know he is a talented enough writer to explore some of Jacob's angst without slowing down the story's pace. I think it would have added to the story. Lundy did a great job doing that exact thing with Shane in Something to Fight For (a recommended read). With that said, Lundy is a gifted story teller and The Darkness is an excellent and entertaining read that I highly recommend.

9 of 9 people found the following review helpful. Another great one by Lundy By default_character Lundy keeps up the pace with "The Darkness" and fans of WTF will not be disappointed; no prior WTF experience required! I liked that this was not your typical zombie fare, but the book did seem a bit short (in other words, left me wanting more!). I did not like the main character and his wife; he seemed like a deer-in-headlights and she was a bit unreal; however, maybe some (or most?) people would act like that given the situation. The soldiers were awesome as usual; I don't know many soldiers in real life, but I like to think that they're all this tough. Lundy is a very talented writer and does a great job in describing action scenes as well as giving you just enough details about his characters so you are left feeling you understand them a little. I'm really looking forward to the continuation of this story -- it was left wide open, and I want to see the good guys beat the villains who are much smarter than zombies...

In HAUNTED HOUSE…HAUNTED LIFE, the dead are resurrected so they can reveal their secrets. Our curiosity is finally sated as we get the story straight from the spirits’ mouths. Jeanne’s life has never been easy, and thanks to a brain tumor and her best friend, Anna Maria, it doesn’t seem as if her death is going to go any better. The story of her past and present drip with loneliness, regret, and heavy doses of sarcasm that stick to her soul in the afterlife. When she meets Catherine, Richard, and Elizabeth, she learns the hard way that her dad was right – the idea of something is always better than the reality. The power of obsession vs the power of parental love By clahain A dying woman's obsession with her childhood "friend" follows her into an uneasy afterlife.Disclaimer: This isn't an easy book to review properly without spoiling. The story really needs to be experienced firsthand for the biggest impact, so forgive me for any vagueness here.HAUNTED HOUSE...HAUNTED LIFE starts out as a darkly funny drama, and the main character, Jeanne, seems like a long-suffering wife and mother yearning for one last contact with the only friend she's ever had. Things quickly turn on their head, however, and we learn that "Anna Maria" isn't quite who--or what--we think. Nor will Jeanne's search for her be as simple or straight forward as we expect. Instead we watch in stunned horror as the woman we've been rooting for with the batty husband and disappointing kids slowly twists into someone else altogether as her obsession ratchets higher and higher. At the same time as Jeanne struggles toward her goal, there's a secondary family tale going on. This one centers on parental love and the lengths some will go to in order to make amends to those most important to them. I love how, in a way, misguided, tragic Jeanne provides the opportunity for another remorseful soul, to find his way to reconciliation and peace. This is a funny, sad, moving book that I'll remember for a long time.

About the Author Better known as a dancer and a circus performer, Ann K Addley graduated with qualifications in Interior design, but soon found that her unique talents drew her to world travel. Performing and teaching dance and circus, as well as producing shows and festivals has allowed Ann to remain self employed and roaming free, living in cities such as Auckland, Cairo, Tokyo and Vancouver. Indulging what they now days call lifestyle design and use to just refer to as being a little weird. Ann wrote her first book while still in high school, but dyslexia and truly awful spelling have kept her from following through with her dream of writing for a living – until a kind friend offered to translate Ann babble into standard human fit for public consumption. She has now finished two books; Stress Free Adventure Planning - a how to for travel planning and T is for Taniwha - an educational children’s coloring book. When she is not traveling or performing, Ann writes and creates visual art, reads everything not nailed down and explores whatever environment she happens to find herself in.

With Darken Rahl defeated, Richard and Kahlan head back to the Mud People to be married. As they wait for their wedding day to approach, they discover three Sisters of Light are pursuing Richard, intending to take him back to the Old World to be trained as a Wizard. Additionally, unbeknownst to Richard and Kahlan, the veil has been torn and the Stone of Tears has entered the world. According to prophecy, the only person who has a chance at closing the veil is the one bonded to the blade, the one born true.

About the Author

Terry Goodkind is the #1 New York Times bestselling author of The Sword of Truth series, Richard and Kahlan stories, author of The Law of Nines, foundational novel The First Confessor: The Legend of Magda Searus, as-well-as collaborator for Legend of the Seeker, the Sam Raimi produced, Disney ABC television series based on The Sword of Truth books. Goodkind was born and raised in Omaha, Nebraska, where he also attended art school, one of his many interests on the way to becoming a writer. Stone of Tears (Sword of Truth Book 2), by Terry Goodkind

From Publishers Weekly This satisfying sequel to Goodkind's powerful debut novel, Wizard's First Rule, has everything one could ask for in an epic fantasy. In the earlier book, Seeker of Truth Richard Cypher tricked the sorcerer Darken Rahl by using Wizard's First Rule (that people are stupid and can be easily misled) into opening the wrong Box of Orden. Though this saved humanity from the evil mage's tyrannies, it also tore the veil between worlds, so the diabolical Keeper of the Underworld can now reach through and seize permanent control of the living. To stop this from happening, Richard must now learn how to be a wizard. The Sisters of the Light promise they will teach him to wield his powers, but they require that he wear a collar of obedience, something he has sworn he would rather die than do. Events sweep Richard and his betrothed, the Mother Confessor Kahlan Amnell, apart from one another; later, in one of the most vigorous battle sequences written for a heroine in modern fantasy, Kahlan leads her underage troops against battle-hardened soldiers, the young warriors naked except for a spectral coat of whitewash intended to make them look like "spirits." Those who like their fantasy big and brassy will revel in this exemplar of the genre. Copyright 1995 Reed Business Information, Inc.

From Library Journal After the death of Sorcerer Darken Rahl, Richard Cypher?a woods guide turned reluctant hero?finds that his responsibilities have only just begun. He seeks a teacher to help him control his magical gift but is caught in a difficult struggle to retain control over his destiny. Goodkind's talents for world building and characterization are again featured in this sequel to Wizard's First Rule (LJ 9/15/94). He explores not only the deeds but the innermost thoughts of his heroes and villains. Graphic depictions of sex and violence, though integral to the story, limit this powerful saga to mature audiences.Copyright 1995 Reed Business Information, Inc.

From Booklist The second volume of The Sword of Truth continues the quest of Richard Cypher, reluctant hero turned magical warrior, and his beloved Kahlan Amnell, the last Mother Confessor. Twisting the traditional roles (now common enough in fiction but done particularly well here), it is Richard who has to handle the magical part of the quest and Kahlan who must lead armies against the surviving forces of the dead mage, Darken Rahl. Not as tightly written as it might be, this volume yet features plenty of action, some engaging characters, and world building full of nice touches and intelligence. Goodkind's prospective series may have been encouraged by Robert Jordan's successful Wheel of Time saga. Goodkind has not yet attained Jordan's level of performance, but he now has two big, well-told yarns under his belt, which bodes well for the forthcoming rest. Roland Green

I can understand some errors during the conversion process, but to misplace an entire section is unforgivable. A key section dealing with the Sisters of the Dark, originally taking place at the end of chapter 64, has been moved to the end of the book, AFTER "The End". Obviously, no one bothered reviewing the ebook prior to publication.Editing errors continue in the next book, "Blood of the Fold". Upon checking to see if any sections had been misplaced in that book I discovered sections were divided not by a sword, as in "Wizard's First Rule", nor by asterisks, as in "Stone of Tears", but by the words "1 Line Space". I did not look beyond the last chapter to see if this occurred throughout the book.I understand Amazon and the publishers' reasons for encoding their products with DRM (digital rights management). But I consider this a breach of the unwritten agreement between publisher and reader. If they continue to provide us with inferior, error-ridden products, they should not complain when we strip their protections so we can re-edit their books into something readable.

I wanted a book that would take my mind off of being cooped up in airplanes. It worked really well for that.I read Stone of Tears because WFR got me hooked on the characters, particularly Richard, the hero, and I wanted more. For me, Stone of Tears was an even better story. Do you know that feeling when you identify with a character so much that you start writing your own dialog for him? I hope that's not just me who does that...I agree with a lot of reviewers who talk about wooden dialog and some unbelievable situations. Most of the men and some of the women in the story seem to have physical abilities and endurance that would sweep the olympic games if they ever tore the veil between that world and ours. But, listen: that's not important. To me, emotions are important, and intelligent characters. I don't want to be yelling at dumb characters, in my head.I identify with Richard. He's an angry young man with a strong personal code. He's no wuss. He's smart. I once was a young man like that, too, so it felt good to slip into his skin.Ultimately, my test for a good book is whether it changes how I experience the world. This series is doing that. I'm thinking about my own experience as a Seeker, and my own personal Sword of Truth. Sound silly? In 1999, I quit a safe job and became a consultant. I had no savings, nor equipment, nor preparation. This was a Sword of Truth moment, I now realize. It's a moment that comes rarely in life-- when you see what you must do and you do it despite the pain it will cause you. We're caught up in so many complicated threads in our modern lives, Terry Goodkind is the kind of writer who helps me reflect on how I can maintain my moral compass.

However, due to a disability I can no longer hold those thick books for very long so I bought the kindle version; after finding out it was supposed to have been "revised" in June. But the FINE Group didn't go far enough on the "revisions." What a waste of money.I love the series! However, buy the book not the kindle version of Stone of Tears period!According to FINE group: The ebook was corrected on June 2012.=======================================================================================Stone of Tears (The Sword of Truth #2) (Terry Goodkind)- Highlight Loc. 36-37 | Added on Sunday, July 29, 2012, 01:48 AM"First electronic edition published 2011 FINE Group. Corrected and revised June 2012."=======================================================================================The only thing I see that was changed was the major snafu of having the last chapter showing up after the end of the book.I have seen better editing from self-published authors than Stone of Tears ebook. It seems like the "publisher" did a classic Find / Replace All when it came to places where "than that" or even "than" should up as "that that" or "that" instead of than. With the number of mistakes made in the book I wonder if someone retyped everything, for what ever reason, but I got that feeling on several occasions.Get it in gear FINE Group. I paid money for this crap! You have ruined an authors work. I sure hope his lawyers find a way of taking some of your hide off.

The Lion in the Room Next Door dances the line between fiction and memoir, crystallizing moments from one woman’s life as she travels through childhood, marriage, and motherhood to the true love that may come after. Each tale in this collection of eleven linked stories unfolds in a landscape, distinctly lush and evocative, where episodes from an individual life are transformed into moments of universal significance. In the title story, a child inhabits her own private realm within a maze of corridors and rooms in a hotel in Brazel where she comes to recognize the truth of what she alone has heard. In “The Blue of the Madrugada,” the girl grows into a wilful young woman and discovers the complexities of love by the light of blue candles. In “Taken for Delirium,” amid the revolving seasons and nature’s endless regeneration of the Ontario woods, the woman and her husband cope as their marriage falters. And in “The Still Point,” the young wife and mother, in a Mexican landscape mysterious with unexplained occurences, breaks free of her bonds. The stories in the Lion in the Room Next Door test the boundaries of literary prose, unfolding like memory itself in sharply etched images. The narrative is potent with remembered pasts, fragments of myth and dream, and the magic within the mundane. As the heroine travels through exotic landscapes, she struggles to find her own way through the terrain of her heart. Praise for The Lion in the Room Next Door: “Written with delicacy and grace, illuminating both the nature of memory and the kind of work fiction can perform. It is a great pleasure to read Merilyn Simonds.” —Hilary Mantel “Vivid, wistful, beautifully shaped.” —Elizabeth Hay “Lush, gorgeous, and evocative . . . charged with precise observation, generosity, acceptance and the magic that comes of looking closely at the world in which we all dwell.” —Douglas Glover “Beautifull wrought, emotionally complex, satisfying fiction. Simonds may be the next Alice Munro.” —Kirkus Reviews (U.S. starred review) “The exactitude of description, the shocks of colour and imagery and the rhythmic, sonorous prose are an intoxication, a fierce and compelling joy . . . Here is a writer of powerful talent . . .” —Independent on Sunday (U.K.)

The Lion in the Room Next Door: Short Stories, by Merilyn Simonds

Amazon.com Review Canadian writer Merilyn Simonds's first book is an exquisite, beguiling collection of interlinked stories. Rendering one woman's life from childhood into motherhood and middle age, The Lion in the Room Next Door begins in Brazil where the narrator is living in the Hotel Terminus with her parents and sisters, waiting for her father's new factory to be finished so they can move into a house. She spies on the other guests, even on her own father as he eats his breakfast alone, and is preoccupied by a sound she hears beneath the hotel's life, at night, a rumbling that "moves through the wall by my head," then "recedes like the tide." She goes searching for the source of the sound, slipping out of her bedroom at night, or dreaming she has slipped out. It is the sound of childhood enchantment, where everywhere you look you see a buried life.

As the book progresses, the narrator travels the world and crosses the threshold into her erotic life. Foreign places are full of the promise of sex and the threat of predatory men: the leering porter, the soldier with a gun on the beach who eyes her as she swims. Throughout she is involved in various complicated affairs, and sex moves more and more to the forefront of her story, becoming the thing that hums below the surface, the big mystery, the same mystery over and over. Alas, the narrator's preoccupation with her sexual power becomes a little tiresome--like a girlfriend who talks about men all the time, sometimes I wished Simonds would change the subject. Nevertheless The Lion in the Room Next Door is a formidable debut, full of shining moments and careful lyricism. --Emily White

From Publishers Weekly Keenly observed, the stories that make up Simonds's second book (after the nonfiction The Convict Lover) chart the course of one woman's life, from her earliest apprehension of sex to her midlife intimations of mortality. Divided into three sections ("Saudades--Yearnings," "Lipes--Sorrows," and "Milagros--Miracles"), the 11 narratives take the unnamed Canadian narrator through several familiar rites of passage, including escape into an early marriage and a later decision to leave her husband. But in its particulars, the existence described is unfamiliar, even exotic. The narrator spends her '50s childhood in Brazil, lives her first years as a wife and mother traveling by van around Europe, raises her children on a subsistence farm in northern Canada and, breaking out of her marriage, travels to Mexico and Hawaii. Simonds writes about this life with a poet's attention to language and metaphor. In the exquisitely wrought title story, for instance, a leashed lion takes nocturnal walks through the halls of a Brazilian hotel, leaving "a faint scent of feline. A memory of topaz eyes." While the image captures a child's presentiment of sex, the story subtly suggests both the privilege and the loneliness of expatriate life. Indeed, Simonds masterfully juxtaposes her narrator's discordant feelings in all the richly layered narratives. At times, the resemblance to memoir grows irksome, as when information is withheld that might be too personal or when events are summarized that might be dramatized. More often, Simonds is brilliant in her silences, showing just enough and nothing more. Writing lapidary sentences, she has crafted stories so solid they seem sculpted, yet so delicate they remain full of mystery. (Feb.) FYI: The Convict Lover received the Arthur Ellis Award and was shortlisted for the Governor General's Award. Copyright 2000 Reed Business Information, Inc.

From Booklist This collection of interconnected short stories, published in Canada in 1999, garnered well-deserved outstanding reviews. The eleven stories are organized under the significant Yearnings, Sorrows, and Miracles in a woman's life. Although the stories are fictional, the easy-flowing first-person narration gives them the feel of a memoir. The unnamed central character, like the author, is Canadian-born and spent part of her childhood in Brazil. Both influences are reflected in Simonds' haunting prose, which is both lush and concise. The stories are seductive, melancholy and dark, sensual and sexual. Danger, assault, or loss is revealed, sometimes unexpectedly, or lurking just around the corner, just under the surface. Each chapterlike story is complete by itself; together, they tell of a woman's experiences, from childhood into her 40s--experiences of love and longing, the pain of separation and letting go, the struggle to heal after suffering. Simonds, who has won several Canadian writing awards, is the author of 10 books, including The Convict Lover, the stage adaptation of which premiered in Toronto in 1998. Grace Fill

The first chapter confused me slightly and I wasn't sure I'd like the book. The second story helped me understand why the first chapter was confusing and I came to the conclusion that Merilyn Simonds is a master storyteller. This book is through the eyes of on woman from childhood through adulthood. Just as your earliest childhood memories are confusing, so are hers. I realized when I was a child I took solace and comfort in certain perceptions and beliefs, that were not real. I have VIVID memories and emotional pulls to things, places and people that no longer intrigue me or anyone else. In short, this book is incredible. Her writing is precise, clear and thought provoking. Almost psycholoically stimulating in ways you never thought a book could be. This book quickly became a top ten favorite for me.

By staceyc@uniserve.com Merilyn Simonds brings hope to those of us who have been instructed by our teachers and mentors to write about what we know best. In a series of personal vignettes, Simonds carefully recreates moments and situations from her past, turning them into art. A real page turner, this book has to be begun from the beginning every time it is picked up (I'm making it last!). The writer lets readers into the most private corners of her being ... and we recognize something of ourselves there.
