Entertaining and enlightening stories By Amazon Customer I received "The Wrong Sort of Stories" as a gift and found it to be bothinteresting and entertaining. I agree with the author that "conformity is overrated."This point is illustrated very effectively in "Melvin the Protester," when Melvin wasso obsessed with fitting in and impressing the woman of his dreams, that he wentalong with a protest that he knew absolutely nothing about.Another story in this compilation that I particularly enjoyed was "The Honor Codeon Trial." It reminds the reader, in a humorous way, how silly it is for people to goto such great lengths to be politically correct -- even going so far as to miss thepoint they are trying to make entirely."Stare Decisis' is another story that uses unusual and even, as described by theauthor, "a little bit freaky" illustrations to make the point about how far off-basejudges are becoming in their handling of the Constitution.I found Stephen Measure to be a gifted writer with a vivid imagination and a talentfor writing about some of the prevalent attitudes present in today's society in a veryentertaining and unique way.

Porretto The author has some skill as a writer, and an obvious passion for the messages he wraps his stories around, but he’s guilty of one of the worst sins a fiction writer can commit: subordinating the entertainment of the reader to his polemic mission.Many writers want to promulgate particular ideas with their stories. I’m one such, so I’m not about to condemn that as a desideratum. But entertaining the reader must come first. To make one’s message a story’s entire reason for existing is to misconceive why adult readers, at least, purchase fiction at all.I’d like to see this writer try again, with a gentler polemic touch, as he does have some skill. Also, the stories in this collection do display a modicum of originality. Given the trend toward “bandwagon fiction” – the tendency of so many writers to “write what’s hot” – that’s something in short supply today.

The characters, human and otherwise, are well developed and interesting. The story is well paced, drawing the reader along with the characters. I'm already looking forward to reading the next installment.

To think so outside of the box, while keeping it all in the cyber box - outstanding!! This author inspires me, and always brings so much tech savvy lingo, reminds me of my old geek days. If you haven't discovered the wonderful world of Zoey and the Hidden before now - Congratulations you officially missed the boat! Especially if you have been reading my blog for any length of time. All have been featured on the blog, and all but book 4, Golem in My Glovebox have been Quote-Tastic picks.As the last book in the series, I really, really don't want to give any spoilers away. Let's just say that our girl Zoey has come a extremely long way and I am so proud of her. There are some serious tough times in this book, and yet she has grown and matured enough to mostly handle everything being dealt to her.All of our favorites from previous books make appearances and even though I was sad about how things ended, they made sense in the Monster Haven World. Some of the clues that were dropped were obvious and others I never did quite understand, but so goes the ways of fortunes and oracles. There was a beautiful symmetry to the ending of the book from the beginning of the series, that left me with a smile on my face and wishing Zoey and friends a Happily Hidden After. I am finishing this series off as a 5 star read.Thanks to Netgalley and Carina Press for the opportunity to read and review the book.

I think most lovers of fantasy or supernatural themes will enjoy how uniquely these stories all fit together, but frankly anyone who enjoys well-written fiction would like them too.These stories are not a rehash of done-to-death plots or characters - they are fresh & interesting & can be enjoyed as stand-alones but are much more involving if read in the correct order.The characters are really, really well evolved & relatable, which is really tricky in these genres. I also found the author to have a deft & delicate touch with difficult subjects such as children being abducted, animal cruelty, sexual assault, euthanasia, divorce, family violence & grief. That said, that is NOT what the stories focus on, rather the opposite. The focus is on becoming confident, brave, curious, empathetic, & digging deep within oneself to rise above the obstacles that challenge us.The messages are overwhelmingly positive & radiate hope for humanity. Each novel is intelligently written, & also well edited. That speaks volumes for the author & her team as they must have had faith in the readers that they would love these books & take away the deeper messages too.The monsters are fantastic! So many "flavours" of the Hidden beings, & you will love them all! Pygmy Dragons, Djinn, Closet monsters, Gargoyles, Harpies, Gnomes, Fairies, Brownies, Demons, Vampires (omg the Vampire Lord - the mental image will stay with me forever), Yetis, the Leprechaun Mafia, Dryads..... Amazing. Seriously.These books are really funny too with lots of situations that had me laughing out loud. There was so much great writing it kept me awake far past the time Mummies should be asleep ready for little people to wake them early! If the book is great you've got to finish it, right?So start at the beginning if you haven't already, but get all 6 so you can put the whole puzzle together properly & have the Happily Ever After!Note to publishers - a box set NEVER goes astray!!! Saves trying to sort them in my Kindle app as the book number never comes up in the title. Make it a special price & everyone wins! Please?

Monster Haven book 6 By Sarah (Feeling Fictional) I've been a huge fan of the Monster Haven series since I first read Monster in My Closet a few years ago. These stories never fail to make me laugh and I love the way R.L. Naquin always comes up with such weird and wonderful magical creatures to include. As much as I was looking forward to reading Phoenix in My Fortune I'm still really sad that it was the last book in the series. I'm glad that it's going out on a high but I would happily have continued reading more books about Zoey and her friends.I'm deliberately going to keep this review vague because I think most people who are reading it are already going to be fans of the series and will know what to expect from one of these stories. If you haven't discovered this world yet then I'd recommend starting at the beginning, these books really need to be read in order to make the most of the character development and the story arc that has developed across all of the books. These are really fun, light hearted stories though and I'd highly recommend them to fans of the supernatural.Zoey and her friends are finally facing off against the enemy that has been coming after them via third parties for a while now. He is a danger unlike anything they've ever faced before and the risks have never been greater. Phoenix in My Fortune is a bittersweet ending to the series, it ties up all the loose ends and gives us a lot of closure but at the same time it's not all rainbows and happiness and there are a few tears to be shed along the way.I'm so sad that this series is over, I've enjoyed every minute spent with Zoey and I'm going to miss her and the rest of the gang. I really hope that R.L. Naquin will decide to revisit this world in the future even if it's only in occasional short stories or a spin off series. That's not because anything has been left hanging, it's actually all tied up really nicely, but because I'm not ready for it to be over. I'm looking forward to starting her new Mount Olympus series in the meantime though and I'll definitely be watching out for anything else she publishes in the future because I love her humorous writing style.

In this book, Julie Nelson Davis draws on a wide range of sources and her own sophisticated analysis of his works to reinterpret Utamaro within the context of his times.             Reconstructing the place of the ukiyo-e artist within the commercial print market of eighteenth-century Japan, Davis situates Utamaro’s oeuvre within the artistic culture that surrounded him, demonstrating how his images participated in a larger spectacle of beauty that characterized the city of Edo (present-day Tokyo). Walking the streets of Edo with Utamaro, she follows his life and output up until his arrest for insulting military ruler Toyotomi Hideyoshi (for depicting his wife and concubines), which would destroy his career just as it reached its pinnacle. Examining how Utamaro and other artists of his time engaged with the construction of gender, identity, sexuality, and celebrity, Davis makes a larger contribution to art history as a whole.

The argument is more sophisticated than the previous reviewer suggests -- rather than "stripping" the artist of "his individuality" Davis argues convincingly that the prints were designed to sell an enhanced reputation for Utamaro -- and that he and his publisher used their connections and period ideas of sophistication to create an aura of celebrity around Utamaro. It's a scholarly book, not a general one, that uses an impressive range of theory, primary documentation, and close analysis to give a new idea of the ukiyo-e artist. 6 of 13 people found the following review helpful. Long winded By David Stokes The publisher's description about this book makes it sound pioneering, which it isn't. It's a slow read and there are a number of mistakes in the text. Nelson Davis dwells on points too long so you get the urge to skip ahead and she argues that Utamaro wasn't so much a person as a created persona, like a brand name. She strips the artist of his individuality and implies he was little more than a tool with no real personal voice - not an argument that I think holds water. The usual Utamaro prints are illustrated so there's nothing new there.

It is an absolute "must read" for those of use who shudder at the thought of, horror of horrors, selling our services. John practices what he preaches, achieving success with his first book by doing so perfectly that which he asks of his readers -- asking, and answering -- "What can I do to help this person?"

Michaels is the story of the initial meeting of Josef and Gabe and how their extraordinary friendship began. I've always been such a fan of this series. I've actually read and re-read it several times and every time I read it, I enjoy it even more. So naturally when I saw that Ava was releasing this story, I couldn't wait to order and read it. If I were asked of all the books I've ever read, and that would be a very large number, who are my favorite paranormal characters of all time, I would have to say Ava's Josef, Gabe and Peri of The Witch, The Wolf and The Vampire Series. The simple fact that these creatures who are natural born enemies are somehow able to overcome the confines of predestined supernatural prejudice and distrust of each other enabling them to become so much stronger together while forging a completely unselfish love and mutual respect for each other despite their differences. There's a remarkable lesson to be learned from these characters, something rather profound. If only it could be so simple in our own world. Ava's books always make me feel as if I'm returning home for a long awaited and highly anticipated visit to see family and friends. The story is smart, exciting, thrilling, humorous and enticing. The characters are fascinating, captivating, engaging and intriguing. And as always with any of Ava's books, a darn good read! Thank you Ava, I always love reading about Josef and Gabe. Now we want to hear much more about Josef, Gabe, Peri and the baby!

Michaels has done it again dazzling her readers with her phenomenal writing skills. I loved the history between the Ancient Vampire and The Wolf. Josef acute sense of smell and an instant gravitation towards the injured wolf made him stop on his way home from a business meeting. Why he stopped? that’s still a mystery, but he knew he needed to help the dying wolf. This was the start to an everlasting friendship between two powerful supernatural beings.The banter between Josef and Gabe flowed seamlessly. I laughed, had my emotional outburst but I fell in love with these two amazing characters all over again. Thank you A.K. Michaels for letting me experience the beginning of my favorite series with my favorite vampire and Wolf.

I DID NOT enjoy it.. NOT AT ALL..I loved the witch ,the wolf and the vampire but thishad such an ODD vibe about it there really wasn't a story told here , Josef found Gabe took him itcared for him helped guide him and protect him,provide food clothing and shelter for him, and thenconstantly be amazed at how attached he got to him as their friendship grew.. but NO real story asit that was bad enough the really odd part for the whole THIS IS NOT AN m/m STORY OK!!! WEIRDNESSto it, from the cover that screams m/m story to it(if you hadn't ready read The Witch, The Wolf and The Vampire,to Gabe almost constantly even supposedly after 50 years together with Josef.. feeling the need to say I.LIKE.GIRLS!to Josef... I'm personally not into m/m stories,it's just not my thing.. kinda like window shopping,don't wanna read about what I can never have..(I'm a Woman who loves men :) (I wanna read about a Woman getting her man and pretending it's me sometimes)can't do that with m./m and it was a really odd thing to KEEP coming up over and over and over especially with Josef noticing Gabe'srippling muscles at times and realizing he love Gabe..now I'm sure it's like a lil brother and a close friend ,coz they are only ever with Women sexually but like i said there was little to No story here and between odd cover "Art" and Gabe seeming to NEED to bring itup sooooooooo OFTEN even after 50 years together it started to have a "I think he Doth protest too much" vibeand it was just weird and kept me on edge wondering if there was gonna be a surprise to their relationship I wasn't gonna be happy to learn...even thou if you've read all this series you know the end up happily "married"/bonded with Peri the witch in the title and having at least 3 kidswith her and some Grandkids but the feel was just soo odd not "real" story here and an odd vibe that left me wondering...for me a waste of time that added nothing to the characters or the story.. They met the traveled,the shared women and Josef found a friendhe loves that makes him laugh and O Gabe he LOVES WOMEN!!!Whatever...
