I bought this as a gift for a friend who has never crochet before. There are only two illustrations in the whole book; one showing the top of a chain, and another showing how to increase/decrease. Without using other resources it would be near impossible for a beginner to understand the descriptions given. Please consider carefully before purchasing. I had chose it because of the good reviews and the price. In reality there are lots of other books out there much better than this that will show you step by step how to crochet.

It has been a great learning experience to understand what kind of yarn to buy exactly, how to work with the hook and what kind of basic stiches to make. I love the step by step instructions the author gives on building elaborate patterns with granny squares. The book features a few demo links from YouTube for reference and gives plenty of ideas to play with. I am currently mastering two treble stitches!

Well written instructions and easy to understand By Amazon Customer I got this book to help my young daughter learn crochet and as a refresher for myself, it has been awhile since I crocheted. This book was very well written and the instructions are very clear and easy to understand. Lots of great ideas for the beginner. If you are wanting to learn to crochet or need to jog your memory on how to do it, then this would be a great book. Both my daughter and I found it useful and are making projects now that we found in this guide.

Hunt, Jr. The array of principles discussed are not just applicable to architecture or to business but alsoto work / life balance. It is a great "lessons learned' set of thoughts and "TIBS" ("This I Believe)that emerged as a great business developed and prospered . . all due to an organic processwithout a "handbook" or rigid set of rules . . but that organic process was not accidental. Imarveled at the simple truisms that we could all benefit from if we just applied them to whatwe do . . just as Art Gensler did.Beast idea : go home and have dinner with your family each night (even though I know that Art Gensler drove back to work after dinner : see page 138)

This is an excellent guide for anyone looking for inspiration on leadership By NBValentine This is an excellent guide for anyone looking for inspiration on leadership, culture, strategy and client focus. It boils down the essentials into bite sized nuggets anyone can relate to and use to succeed and grow a team or a firm. Buy this book, give it as a gift to yourself or your coworkers in any stage of their careers. It's a winner!

2 of 2 people found the following review helpful. Good start By G. McGonigle “Although Arthur Gensler’s “Art’s Principles” is written from the perspective of a seasoned, successful professional, it’s appeal is to a much broader audience. The book is a collection of the author’s observations on all aspects of management and leadership and as such reflects experience that young professionals will find useful as career guidance. The author has not presented ground-breaking new theories but by collecting what he has found to be effective in building the world’s largest planning and design organization, Mr. Gensler has offered to all entrepreneurs a distillation of proven ideas. The index alone is worth the price of the paper-bound book’s 280 plus pages. This reader spent a career in management and executive roles in a major corporate setting and wishes he had read this book at the beginning of his journey."

2 of 2 people found the following review helpful. A Satisfying Conclusion to the Chronicles of Tallin Trilogy By Dorathea Kathir’s Redemption is the final installment in the second trilogy of Alva’s Dragon Stone Saga. The book does a good job of wrapping up the various storylines set up by The Balborite Curse and Rise of the Blood Masters in a satisfying and engaging manner. As the last volume of the Chronicles of Tallin Trilogy, Kathir’s Redemption does a good job of providing a sense of closure while also looking forward to Alva’s next set of books.Readers who are familiar with Alva’s previous work will be pleased to find that Kathir’s Redemption picks up right where Rise of the Blood Masters leaves off. Both of the storylines that were (quite dramatically) suspended at the end of that book play a large role in this one and are each given the attention that they deserve. While it certainly has its hopeful and more lighthearted moments, Alva also incorporates a good amount of darkness into Kathir’s Redemption. I appreciate this quality of the story, as it serves to better expose the true nature of some of the characters and also makes for more riveting reading. I also found that the book contains some genuinely surprising dramatic moments, which certainly made things more entertaining than they would have been otherwise.Perhaps my biggest complaint about the latest installment in the Dragon Stone Saga is that it does not feature enough interactions between Tallin and Duskeye for my taste. In fact, the dragons in general remain in the background for most of the story. There is a lot happening in this book, and I understand why the dragons are not always the focus, but it is possible that Alva’s decision not to focus on them here will disappoint some readers slightly. That said, what Kathir’s Redemption lacks in dragons, it more than makes up for in character development. This is particularly true concerning Kathir, but also applies to Skera-Kina, Skemtun, and Tallin (among others)—fans of any of these characters definitely won’t want to skip this book.Kathir's Redemption makes for a thoroughly enjoyable weekend read. Alva continues to grow as a fantasy author, and her latest should appeal to a wide range of young and adult readers alike.

This was very enjoyable and the weakest of the six.I The last book of the first three was the weakest of it's set also. For me a truly evil villain makes the story a much better read, and this story lacks this. Mrs Alva has given us a great series with remarkable characters but she needs to bring a villain to the forefront that gives the story some much needed edge.Mrs Alva bring back Vosper or a son ,daughter, someone to give meaning to our dragons and Dragon riders.

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. Destruction and Restoration: A new start for both dwarves and assassins By Forests The destruction that awaited the dwarves is now upon them in book 6 of the Tallin Chronicles. Just as predicted, the orcs have arrived and Kathir is tasked with keeping Skemtum alive, a task that proves progressively harder as the story progresses, due to physical and political dangers that abound the characters. The dwarves were unable to fend of the Orc attack and King Nar has now claimed their mountain as his own. As a result, the dwarves are literally forced to walk a mile in the Vardmiter’s shoes as they flee the mountain as refugees without a home.Tallin, Mugla, and the Elves are also in the grip of death as they are captured and face imminent execution. While I loved the series, I was honestly baffled at the High Priest Character. Previous books had hinted that the Barbarities were a fierce nation and that they had plans to start a war on the mainland, breed dragons and so forth. In this book however, the High Priest character was not at all what I expected, in fact I was a bit disappointed. Tallin, has never failed to impress me though, love how this character is resourceful. As I was reading about his fight with the High Priest, I was worried that the author was going to get lazy and create the same solution as she did with Vosper. I was thrilled that the solution was much, MUCH, more creative. I would rant about its creativity but I would not want to spoil the books ending. The Tallin Chronicles have been my favorite and this book concludes the series well, with its bittersweet victories, sacrifices, and facing prejudices and resolving them.

Dawn of the Sacred Land: Book 1 of the Sacred Land Legacy, by Mark E Tyson

Review The next book in the series is titled Defenders of the Sacred Land.

From the Author This is the opening book of the Sacred Land Legacy. Book 2 is titled Defenders of the Sacred Land and is also currently available.

About the Author A life-long fan of the fantasy genre, Mr. Tyson began writing fantasy short stories just after he was first able to put words together to form sentences. In the early years, his writing was mostly influenced by the Universal movie monsters like Dracula, Frankenstein, the Wolfman, among others. In high school, back in the 80s, he began playing the popular roleplaying games of the time. He is still lifelong friends with the majority of his roleplaying group today! It was also during his high school days that he began to read the works of David and Leigh Eddings, JRR Tolkien, and Terry Brooks. In the 90s it was Robert Jordan, Terry Goodkind etc. Mr. Tyson is quoted saying, “Fantasy authors? Yes, I am influenced by them all, but my writing style is uniquely my own.” When asked why he writes fantasy and science fiction, Mr. Tyson often replies: “Because I love fantasy. Besides, it’s not nearly as easy as it looks. Sometimes, when I am embroiled in the complexities of a difficult plotline, I think I should have taken up something easier, like Quantum Physics or String Theory. That’s just a joke, don’t send me letters!” Mark Tyson lives and writes in Texas.

This first book was a tad slow for me to read, as there wasn't a lot of action. Yet that's understandable! This book is mainly trying to set the stage for the upcoming second great war of this land. The evil that supposedly died off last time has been reborn and rebuilding his army. The readers get to know about the characters and what some of them are capable of achieving. Not much is known about the enemy, except some of them have been immensely improved on for gathering information and in war itself. I'm look forward to the next book in this series!

I decided a few months ago, that all my gift-giving in the future would be hand made and include oils from my Essential Oil business. I hadn't thought of candles as part of my gift-giving, but I've now included them in my repertoire. The instructions were easy to follow and the ingredients easy to obtain. I look forward to making each of the candles discussed in this book and will enjoy doing so. Whether one is interested in aromatherapy or not, this book is a great guide for candle making. Even if Therapy is not a concern or interest, aroma is always a great thing for one's environment!

This book was able to teach me exactly how to make candles that I not embarrased to give and use for myself. I had a friend coming over asking what scent I had burning and where I purchased and once I told her I made it on my own, she had to borrow my book!! I can now make candles at a very cheap price, no more buying high end at retail stores!

For me it was a waste of Money.

2 of 2 people found the following review helpful. Better Than The First! By Darrell L Smith The sequel is even better than the first book! The action continues, but the surprises about our past keep coming. The explanations about why the aliens are beautiful make perfect sense and each character has a unique personality – some likable and some not. I can’t wait for the next book!

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. A Great and Unique Two-Book Series By Ricardo Riojas A Great and Unique Two-Book Series. This series is epic in scope. The author puts the reader in a position to witness the unfolding of galactic history, Earth’s history, and Earth’s future through the eyes of some very unique and well-developed characters. These characters are diverse and very realistically portrayed. As a matter of fact, if you’re a person that demands that all the protagonists are always Politically Correct (PC) then this book is probably not for you. All of these disparate personalities, however, all face the same challenge and come together to fight for Earth’s future. While there is plenty of action and drama in both books, the moral questions raised are incredibly insightful and well thought out. The author even explores the scientific possibility of God. The book doesn’t preach – but it raises some fantastic speculation. You may find yourself thinking over some of the concepts hours after you have put the book down – a trait of truly high quality sci fi.I also found the author’s vision of how higher technology would affect our everyday lives interesting and unique. The last point I want to make is that the author’s writing skills have noticeably improved from the first book to the second. Some of the reviews suggest that the editing of the first book needed work but most of those challenges seem to have been fixed. In my opinion, the editing of the second book is superb. This second book does not end in a cliffhanger (like the first) but still leaves open the possibility of future books in this universe. I look forward to them.

8 of 10 people found the following review helpful. Conan Doyle's Best By A Customer It's not often noted that Conan Doyle was one of the funniest writers ever. Many readers seem to miss the humor, if the largely clueless online reviews of "The Lost World" are any guide. Get that book first; it's Conan Doyle's masterpiece and one of the great books of the 20th century. Then try to get a copy of this one (it's out of print), containing three other stories about Professor Challenger. The title story, written at the end of the author's life, shows him at the height of his powers, right down to the magnificent final sentence.

0 of 0 people found the following review helpful. Well written and quite exciting! By The Reviewer Formerly Known as Kurt Johnson When Peerless Jones is contacted by the eccentric Professor Challenger, he has little idea what he is in for. Professor Challenger loves throwing conventional scientific wisdom on its ear, and he is about to do so again. It seems that he has come to the conclusion that beneath the ground we see around us, the Earth we ride through space on is actually a creature of gargantuan proportions! Ridiculous you say? Well, the good Professor has a drill in place, and he intends to prove his case!Professor George Edward Challenger is the lesser known creation of Sherlock Holmes' creator, Arthur Conan Doyle (1859-1930). Unlike the cool and calculating Homes, Challenger is irascible, domineering and extremely outspoken. In short, he is a lot of fun to read. However, unlike Holmes, Professor Challenger never caught on and as such only five Challenger stories were ever written, and this was the last one (written in 1928).Although somewhat dated, I found this story to be well written and quite exciting. It reflects a world that is now gone, but is quite interesting to read about. If you like adventure stories, then you will like this one. Read this book, and learn about A.C. Doyle's other hero!

1 of 2 people found the following review helpful. Super Reader By average Professor Challenger, he of the bombastic and aggressive disposition has gotten himself involved with a spot of digging. In a big way, the whole drilling into the earth scenario. He invites the usual lads down to come and have a look, and they are a little disturbed. This is nothing to what happens the second time when a big even is made of inviting a whole lot of people to have a look at their project. Something down there has more than a bit to say about the whole thing.

In the near future, America is crumbling, bankrupt, and teetering on the edge of chaos. Following the Great Bailout, the multinational Lee-Pi corporation is the only institution that can hold the country together, providing basic services, security, and order. Leonard Cheung is Lee-Pi's most reliable field operative: a negotiator, assassin, and clean-up expert who does the behind-the-scenes dirty work to keep the corporation running.

When the city of Philadelphia is evacuated after a suspected terrorist attack, the corporation drops Cheung into the insanity to retrieve a priceless possession: a champion racehorse belonging to Mr. Lee himself. Cheung is the perfect man for the job, having grown up on the outskirts of the city. In this surreal homecoming, Cheung must track the majestic animal through the deserted streets of a dead city. But Cheung soon discovers that he is not alone. Freedom fighters, long opposed to Lee-Pi's authority, are hunting the horse for their own reasons. And the collision between the resistance movement and the obedient company man will force Cheung to question everything he believes, who he has become, and what is worth fighting for.

The U.S. has been bailed out by a Chinese corporation named Lee Pi. American's. Call it Leap High. The Chinese call the Americans Yahoo's after the people in the story Gulliver's Travels. Instead of the obsessive and highly qualified corporate executives that commonly subdue the world after the apocalypse in most novels, instead we have Wun, a short, over weight, control freak who is mediocre at his job. Cheung, his aide, is tasked by Wun with finding Lee's race horse. The horse is coursing through miles of irradiated land, looking for food and freedom. Cheung must decide what is most important, his marriage, pandering to his boss, or his ties as an American.Interesting story. Very human. 3.5 stars.

0 of 0 people found the following review helpful. Not sure what to think? By Hawk I gave it 4 stars because it is a good story that makes you think. I have been sorting out my opinions on these conundrums for a couple of days since reading this short story. Where do your loyalties lie in a post apocalyptic world? Corporations that can maintain order? Freedom or security? Love or disdain for your boss? Hunger over beauty and majesty? Personal relationships? SURVIVAL......I think that's what you have to choose in a post apocalyptic world. Interesting read.

0 of 0 people found the following review helpful. Disappointing... By Dewey Black Despite the premise of the book sounding interesting, the story gets bogged down in dysfunctional relationships and reliving the past. The ending is incredibly predictable and unoriginal.

Newly Updated with additional content February 9, 2016 and now available for FREE in anticipation of the release of the full length novel and sequel, Fight the Hunger, due out in late February, 2016. Brad McCoy was a loner before the zombies rose in the First Wave. Still, he had a wife and family then. Four months later, he has nothing. Nothing except a new job. Now he exterminates zombies, and business is good. Brad is not what you'd call a people person, but when a group of survivors show up unexpectedly, he has no choice but to get involved. This is his story. Approximately 22,000 words, including a sneak peek at FIGHT THE HUNGER DISCLAIMER: This short story is a stand alone tale. Also, the story contains a good deal of gun violence, gun talk and a little good natured gun humor. Violent images and harsh language might also be offensive to some. You've been warned.

3 of 3 people found the following review helpful. Great read. Check out his two full lenght books By R, Holmes I've just found Mr Allens books and Have read all three straight in a week. If you are a Ringo fan I think you will like these. It's great reading about firearms from someone who obviously knows about them. I'm always disappointed to read about some super, Ninja, Delta, Geen Beret character that doesn't know the difference between a mag and a clip.Great story lines and believable characters. Buy these books you won't be disappointed!

2 of 2 people found the following review helpful. An excellent read. By Danny J. Prats I don't usually like zombie books, but this is an exception. It only uses zombies as a background for Brad to tell his story. It is well thought out, considering aspects of his job that I never considered. I liked the terse plot and non complicad setting. It kept my attention from start to finish.

2 of 2 people found the following review helpful. Excelent read By JohnnyC Loved this short story, straight to the point and simple character development, Brad Mc Coy sitting on a roof shooting Zombies, how simple can you get.But as simple as it was, it's still a good story.I would like to know what happens next, if there is a next.

10 of 11 people found the following review helpful. WEIRD MENACE...NOT FOR EVERYONE BUT GOOD By Tim Janson Howard delved into all sorts of genre as he tried to eke out a living...we all know Conan, Kull, Solomon Kane, etc...but one of the genres he also delved into was weird menace stories...These were quite popular in the day, particularly in the 30's pulp era of Weird Tales and others...Skull Face is one of those weird Menace stories, influenced somewhat by Lovecraft's Cthulhu Mythos.Steve Costigan, not Sailor Steve of Howards fighting sailor series, comes under the influence of a mysterious being in the Orient, circa the 1920's. The being uses opium to control people and do his bidding. The Being, one Kathulos (cthulhu?) is supposed to be a sorcerer who was found in a tomb and is a survivor of ancient Atlantis.A little outlandish but kind of a fun adventure story. The book contains a couple of short sequels to the main story.

3 of 3 people found the following review helpful. Fun, Yellow Menace Pulp By Randy Stafford A surprisingly enjoyable and rich mix of Lovecraft-inspired weirdness, pulp crime story, opium addiction, and a Fu Manchu Yellow Menace type villain.Boxer Steve Costigan whiles away his time in a London opium den to forget the horrors of World War One. But Kathulos, the mysterious man behind the opium den, offers him away out of his addiction – if he becomes a killer for Kathulos. The pace of the plot is, as you would expect from Howard, fast. The story’s main flaw is that the dialogue sometimes seems a bit wordy and full of explication given the tense, desperate situations it’s often spoken in.Lovecraft fans will find an interesting variation on his “The Call of Cthulhu” published only a few months earlier. Howard fans may squirm a bit, given Howard’s chosen end, at how easily Costigan contemplates suicide. Modern readers may even find some resonances in the end of the story. This bargain-basement Kindle edition is surprisingly free of errors – though, not being a Howard scholar, I don’t know how it compares with his original manuscript or its first printing in Weird Tales.

The miraculous, transformative stories of Various Antidotes range across the world of history and science, alighting on figures both real and imaginary. The stories within are those of obsession and brilliance, of the ultimately human recognition that the world is larger than we believe it to be and that we, as figures within it, have through understanding the power to change that world. Whether through learning or madness or accident, the scientists and students within Various Antidotes expose us to the glorious blossom of the natural world.

Various Antidotes: A Collection of Short Fiction, by Joanna Scott

From Publishers Weekly "When a girl was recalcitrant, I used the whip . . . There is nothing more instructive than shame . . ." begins "Dorothea Dix: Samaritan," the best of these 11 stories by an author whose previous three novels ( Fading, My Parmacheene Belle , etc.), have displayed an incandescent imagination and a fine grasp of her craft. While her imagination has not faltered here--each of the tales hinges on a clever idea and is wrought with precision--some of them fail to move the reader. Several of the stories concern scientists caught in the grip of obsession. Each pays an emotional price by alienating his family; some, in addition, suffer a crippling loss of innocence about the world. The protagonist of "Concerning Mold Upon the Skin, Etc." is the Dutch lens maker Anton van Leeuwenhoek, whose discovery about the microorganisms swimming in a drop of water comes at great cost to his daughter; the 17th-century anatomist in "Nowhere" wants to perform autopsies in defiance of the law, but discovers that the man whose body he has dissected has been murdered for that purpose by the infamous Billy Burke. The most compelling stories have first-person narrators whose voices grip the reader. Observing the surreal world of her Coney Island amusement park neighborhood, the old woman in "Convicta et Combusta" is sure she will be hanged as a witch. The narrator in "Tumbling" has Huntington's chorea. She is an attendant in a lab where mice are being raised for scientific experiments, and their treatment portends the torments she will suffer. Some stories stretch too hard for their effects; one admires Scott's dexterity but finds them dry and and somewhat contrived. On the whole, however, this collection offers further evidence of Scott's versatility and talent. Copyright 1993 Reed Business Information, Inc.

From Library Journal The tales in three-time novelist Scott's first collection of short stories are all drawn from the annals of the history of science and medicine. In each, Scott explores the fine line between genius and madness. Some pieces portray the lives of historical figures, such as Antony von Leeuwenhoek, Dorothea Dix, and Charlotte Corday. Others create utterly believable characters who play a role in the formation of medical science, technology, and research in startlingly diverse times in history. Scott is amazingly versatile. She accurately portrays historic times and settings, inserting the psychological states of her characters to create a razor-sharp line between sanity and insanity, passion and obsession. Recommended.- Joanna M. Burkhardt, Univ. of Rhode Island Coll. of Continuing Ed. Lib., ProvidenceCopyright 1994 Reed Business Information, Inc.

From Booklist Award-winning novelist Scott's first short story collection is marvelously gothic and fanciful. Just as she did in her last book, Arrogance (1990), Scott bases many of her characters on historical figures, but here, in the highly rarefied concentration of short fiction, their imagined lives and obsessions become emblematic of specific traits and foibles. One story is an improvisation on the life of "the mad lens-grinder of Delft," Anthony van Leeuwenhoek, who, in thrall to the microscopic world he discovered with his painstakingly constructed microscope, rejected all normal social intercourse, forcing his eldest daughter to become his resentful servant. One man's fascination is a woman's loss again in "Bees, Bees, Bees." Francis loses his sight as a young man but is tended to lovingly by his nurse Nanette, who expects him to reciprocate when she grows old. Instead, Francis can think of nothing but his beloved bees, believing that he is in intimate communication with them until his violent demise. A little knowledge is also dangerous for a professor of anatomy, whose quest to unlock the secrets of the body turns him into an unwitting accomplice to some rather ghoulish research methods. Scott's prose is deceptively plain, masking the sophistication of her concepts and throwing the uncommon drama of her stories into high relief. Donna Seaman

History and Prose Fuse Together Brilliantly By A Customer With a keen, almost relentless examination of history and prose, this fusion writing introduces memorable characters, intense settings, and the unerring need to have these stories told. Joanna Scott, one of the great authors in today's literary universe, obsesses over details so far as to allow the reader the luxury of accepting the not so distant past with a profound clarity. This collection of short stories, similiar to the obsession of one of the book's characters, van Leeuwenhoek, must be examined closely, with intelligence and insight, and there lies the real value of Joanna Scott's writing; it requires us to think, and that is medicinal in its own rights

The author's stupendous erudition is evident on nearly every page. And yet I will offer a single caveat: despite her undeniable talent as a writer of fiction, Joanna Scott fails to make us care about her characters. There is a frigid, clinical quality to the writing that holds the reader at an emotional distance from the events on the page. And yet the stories themselves are, for the most part, absorbing. There is no disputing that Joanna Scott is a very good writer, but I wish she would give us more of the emotional life of her characters.

By A Customer This lady is SMART, in the same league with such novelists as Richard Powers, John Buchan, Francine Prose, and Stephen Dobyns. This collection will make you want to read her other works of fiction. Brimming with insight and beautiful language.

By FranticInFresno One of the earlier Conan stories.Conan & Murilo (companion/nobleman) break into a castle to assassinate the Wizard Nabonidus, only to find that the wizard's assistant Thak (A giant Sasquatch like, semi-human) has clubbed the wizard unconscious, and in a brutish way taken on Nabonidus persona. The three of them must join forces to overcome the beast.Quote: "Murilo turned and ran back into the corridor and, quick as he was, the shaggy horror was almost at his heels. Then as the monster rushed past the curtains, from among them catapulted a great form that struck full on the ape-man's shoulders, at the same instant driving the poniard into the brutish back. Thak screamed horribly as the impact knocked him off his feet, and the combatants hit the floor together. Instantly there began a whirl and thrash of limbs, the tearing and rending of a fiendish battle."Robert E. Howard (2014-06-21). Rogues in the House (Illustrated) (Kindle Location 881). Flying Fish. Introduction Beginning, middle, end, this is the way these short stories are composed, it’s not the only way but it serves my purpose, in that I wanted to have them stand alone and yet contribute to the whole. To my way of thinking, each tale has become an entity unto itself. They are pearls on a long necklace that contribute to the total because they are contained in an Anthology. Each one vibrates with a certain resonance that reminds us of the same kinds of incidences in our own lives. If on the contrary we view them as just separate and not contributing to the Anthology in which they are in, we come to the conclusion that they show us the collective consciousness of humanity. It is not a coincidence that we see that fact, because I tried to fashion them that way. The many themes in the stories reflect our deepest fears and triumphs. Whether it’s a young boy’s curiosity about the world around him or the regret of an old man not protecting his friend long ago when they were children, these topics hit us where we live. Like the curious boy, I hope that you discover little pearls of enlightenment. And come away with the enjoyment of reading stories that give us hope. The human being has a remarkable capacity at surviving every disaster. Enjoy.

The descendants of human civilization have fought the invaders in a war of attrition for several hundred years. The humans now live like the Apaches or Sioux, mobile warrior tribes attacking the crumbling civilization of the invaders. The humans finally win and push in invaders into the sea. Not great but OK.
