Weyer Any trip to Kurt Busiek's wonderful comic book universe is great and this new volume is no exception. The series has always used types for its characters and so it makes sense how this volume focuses on Samaritan, Winged Victory and the Confessor, the obvious analogue for DC's big guns. The plot mainly focuses on Victory when a smear campaign begins, first old foes claiming Victory paid them to fake fights, then women she's helped in her shelters talking of abuse. It's fun how she doesn't react with anger just taking it in stride as she defends herself, aided by lover Samaritan and the Confessor. As she tries to find out who's behind this, we discover the origins of Victory and how it plays into her current state. As ever, the way this world feels so fresh and exciting is terrific. When the trio go over suspects, you feel like this are enemies around for years even if they're mentioned for the first time and that history is showcased well. The Confessor (last appearing as a teenager in "Confessions") is now more capable, using mystic runes for his work and the genius touch of a system of helpers called the Choirboys. The fights are terrific, from a brief Samaritan/Confessor clash to full scale battles, all done under Brent Anderson's beautiful artwork. But the story is great as you feel for Victory, trying to do her best to defend women but realizing the "old ways" aren't the best and that method may do more harm than good. You just get so into it, the plot almost secondary to the great character building Busiek pulls off.The other addition is a "Visitor's Guide" made back in 2001 with a short story and pin-ups of various AC characters by a variety of artists. Also, while not huge in detail (Busiek obviously having stories planned), the history of the city is a nice bit as well as maps to show where things are. As always, the great bit of collections are the sketch work by Anderson and Alex Ross showcasing the development of characters and let you enjoy the creative process. Once again, Astro City remains the best superhero comic on the market and this collection is a truly winning one.

Atsro City Soars To Victory...again By Gary D Zenker Astro City is one of the best examples of a comic that is consistently of excellent quality in both writing and art. A large part of the credit goes to Kurt Busiek, who is able to tell stories about characters who feel familiar even if it your first introduction to the characters. This story clearly focuses on Winged Victory (despite what I would describe as an accurate but misfocused story summary provided in the book description) and her attempt to resolve a malicious attempt to discredit her as a hero. As usual, there are a lot of thought points in a Busiek story and, in this case, many revolve around the roles of women. I found the story and characterization believable and consistent, without resorting to lecturing (which could easily happen on topics like this one). The art is up to its normal high quality and serves as an excellent vehicle for the story. Kudos to Busiek and Anderson for remaining together as a team for the series' run.As I tell anyone who buys an Astro City book: buy it in HARDCOVER. This is a volume you will treasure and reread many times.

By Amazon Customer Another good Astro City story this time focusing on Astro City's version of Wonder Woman. Since she's not really Wonder Woman, she can be a much more outspoken feminist icon than the original. While that normally wouldn't be of much interest to me, Busiek forms her into a well rounded and sympathetic character. She finds herself undermined and framed by an unknown enemy. To find out who, she needs the help of the Astro City version of Superman and Batman, but the women who've given her her powers think it's both bad form and a bad message for her to turn to men for help. The action isn't particularly impressive but its a thoughtful and well done story on gender issues that doesn't devolve into the usual liberal vs conservative arguments.Normally these books have lame extras but this one includes the Astro City Visitors Guide which is really cool, part tour of Astro City and part Astro City Superhero guide, its actually a very good add on.

MotherLoad: Stories, by Avery Caswell

Review "The voices that usher us through Avery Caswell's elegantly biting and wonderfully written collection of stories, MotherLoad, put me in mind of John Cheever: characters plagued with endearing ennui, and chic self-destructive urges. Their salvation, however, is cynicism and a fabulously dry sense of humor. The language in these stories is immaculate, playful, often mugging with the wit and kick of Dorothy Parker and Lillian Hellman. And, yes, these stories are loaded with mothers – yours and mine – evoked with confusion and paradox, harrowing truth and indisputable love: elegies, praise-songs, lambasts. This is convincingly good writing." --Joseph Bathanti, author of The Life of the World to Come: A Novel and North Carolina Poet Laureate (2012 2014)"MotherLoad is a marvel, packed with richly drawn and often haunting characters. Caswell writes with gorgeous precision in an astonishing range of voices and styles, all shot through with a wonderfully wry sense of humor. From the terrifying Mother Franklin to the tough, broken narrator of "Irish Twins & Thoughts of Suicide," Caswell's characters deepen our sense of what it is to be human." --Abigail DeWitt author of DOGS and Lili"Avery Caswell's stories deeply inhabit their worlds. Inside these story-worlds, Caswell's characters get under the skin and dance. I left Caswell's world aching but aware, always, of the possibility of magic. Lightning streaks in from the west. Rain sets in. The stories in MotherLoad remind us of wind and moonlight and possibility." --Karen Salyer McElmurray author of The Motel of the Stars: A Novel

About the Author Avery Caswell, a native of Chicago, eventually found her true home in North Carolina. She is fascinated by the moon, drives far too fast, and wishes she could remember at least one good joke. (averycaswell.com)

Her choice of prose sent this reader on the path of experiences sometimes familiar and often times hauntingly close to heart. Caswell trims a lifetime of these experiences into small vignettes that truly prompts the dragging out of a "hankie" yet not forgetting to bring a smile to the lips of the reader.

We loved Billy, fed and cared for him for sixteen and a half years. Bringing him home as a four month old from the shelter that rescued him, along with his sister, from underneath a suburban porch in Upstate New York, I held him easily in the palm of my hand. (Inside, full color photographs show Billy at his best.) We will never know anything about his parents or what his life was like in the months before we brought him home. But from his first days with us, he was as sweet as any cat we have ever known. It took us much longer to understand how very smart he was. This book is a sort of black cat biography, a record of his last year in perspective of the sixteen that came before. It's a sad story made lighter by anecdotes from his adventurous past. It's also heroic. A black cat who, although loving and playful, insisted on being himself and doing some things his own way. The result go from hilarious to inspiring.

3 of 3 people found the following review helpful. Billy Lives On By Nancy C. Hardin With tears standing on my cheeks, I write this review of the story of a cat named Billy. But in essence it isn't a sad story, actually a revelation of the deep love and friendship between two people and their furry friend. We humans do everything possible to keep a beloved family member (as that is definitely what Billy was) as long as possible, yet knowing all the time that these animals do not have the life span we do. A quote from Author David Stone, when Billy was at the Vet's for an operation particularly touched me; "His being away darkened something important in our home. His status in our family, something we came to appreciate over more than 10 years, was clarified by his absence." Our loss is difficult to explain to those who have never experienced it, and unnecessary to explain to those who have. I feel I knew Billy although I only met him through this story. Billy lives in the hearts of those who loved him, but he also lives on in this book for readers.

Origami Stylish Origanizers: Useful Paper Designs for Your Biz Stuff (Origami Office Book 2), by Yuri Shumakov, Katrin Shumakov

About the Author Katrin and Yuri Shumakov - a stellar artist-duo, professional origami creators, who started their origami journey in France in 1989 and since then they unfold this art in a heretofore unseen way! They have created amazing paper world ORILAND with incredible fantasy Kingdoms that impress with rich detail of majestic castles, abundance of paper flora and busy life of little paper dwellers. Their newest kingdoms Toy-ronto and Albuquerque combine fantasy and reality together, presenting a whimsical artistic rendition of iconic sights of these cities. Another beautiful and elegant aspect of origami they brought to life is ORIBANA - a marriage of two Japanese arts: Origami and Ikebana. By combining these remarkable art-forms, in early 1990s Katrin and Yuri began to create paper flower arrangements in paper vases and thought up a distinctive name for it - Oribana. Since then they designed more than 50 charming oribana-compositions with a broad variety of origami flowers and vases. Being prolific origami authors they created more than a thousand of origami designs from simple forms and cute characters to complex dinosaurs' skeletons and architecture that all have a distinctive Oriland style. Psychologists by education, Katrin and Yuri have studied how origami helps children learn. Their Ph.D scientific work shows that by doing origami, children develop better use of both hands and that origami can improve creativity and intelligence in children ages 7 to 11. They believe that origami is "entertainment for the soul, gymnastics for the mind, and training for the hands." In 1999, Yuri and Katrin received the Silver Award in the ThinkQuest International Competition for their 'Travel to Oriland' website and it brought them and their team to Universal Studios Hollywood for the Award Ceremony! Their Oriland.com website became a winner of the Childnet Award that was given them in Paris, France. Both these projects were acknowledged as high quality creative, educational and fun websites for children and adults. Yuri and Katrin have written more than 30 origami books and instructional CDs, and their works have been exhibited in many countries including several venues in the United States, France, Spain and Canada. The Shumakovs also extend their artistic talents to the realm of photography and music. Katrin is a winner of the Toronto Photo Contest 2010. Yuri is enjoying music composing and sound design. They live in Toronto, Canada, love yoga and a healthy style of life.

Business cards and Customer Loyalty cards are always overflowing my wallet, and stressing my pockets. These handy organizers solve that problem. I even have color coded one's for plumbers, roofers, A/C repair, auto mechanics versus business experts, restaurants, shops, etc. Also these make a handy little gift add-on for almost anyone. The "windowed" ID holder turns out perfectly with a 7" square, and some if the others are best folded with standard 8.5 x 11" paper. Sometimes I use a very heavy paper and pre-crease with a alternate stick pen that is out of ink, or a ball-scribe. A bone folder (see scrapbooking or bookbinding tools) may be a help with this. I originally purchased this from the Oriland Website, and I am thrilled to see it is now available on Kindle e-book.

Evertype presents Lafcadio Hearn's classic tales of ghosts, spirits, and the darker side of the natural world with 20 new linotypes by Mathew Staunton. --- "A legend in Ireland and in Japan where his descendants thrive to this day, Lafcadio Hearn (1850-1904) was himself drawn to legends, his imagination ignited initially by tales of the Celtic Otherworld and later fuelled by stories of Voodoo magic in Louisiana, an imagination that had its full flowering in far-away Japan where his restless spirit found peace. The stories are an eclectic assortment of ghost tales and legend but all of them will most likely seem strange to the Western mind. Individually, the stories seem confusing, perhaps even without point, but take them as a whole and they begin to paint a picture. They lend the reader a strong sense of the Eastern mind. It is really, quite a lovely collection. The second part of this book, contains a collection of three "essays", if you will, on insects. In particular, a sampling of insects which hold some place within Japan's culture or customs - butterflies, mosquitos and ants are covered here. To my mind, this is an unfortunate departure from the first half of the book's legends and tales. The information will likely seem a bit dry as Lafcadio Hearn (LH) hails from a different time and to many modern minds, I would think the words of his essays may seem rambling. Nonetheless, they are interesting in and of themselves for the information within. If I were to truly pick apart the fine particulars of the two subject matters, I could surely list some fine argument here as to why they are brought together as one, but in the end, the contrast is greater than the benefit. I find they cause quite some disharmony when brought together. Two last notes for this e-book version: 1) there may be some off-putting words to the modern mind in this book's introduction, which LH had written in January of 1904, in the earliest hours of the Russo-Japanese War. For example, LH references Japanese soldiers on their war boats as "little men", etc. If you can forgive these words as those from a different time, the meat of this book will be your reward, and 2) for those that appreciate additional information, endnotes are included at the end of each tale.Lafcadio Hearn is well enough known to both Japanese and Westerners alike, and well enough respected by both for his translations of Japanese tales that it would seem almost criminal for a Western student of things Japanese, to completely ignore his works. This book and any of his compilations of Japanese ghost stories and legends are highly recommended.

Stories of ghosts, demons, goblins, and other creatures of the supernatural. Japan has a rich history of Yokai which are creatures of the supernatural. In Shinto tradition everything has Kami or spirit in it, so anything can develop into supernatural beings of good, evil, or just a neutral spirit being. Fascinating reading!

For anyone who dreams of living in the country—or is lucky enough to liver there already—this is the ultimate guide to modern country living with style. The Way We Live… series of books focus on environments and styles of living that are parallel around the world yet somehow stylistically distinct in particular locations. This latest addition to the series celebrates country living, from the lavender fields of Provence and woodsy English cottages to Montana weekend ranches and Mexico’s traditional adobe haciendas. Among the interiors and homes depicted here, there is sure to be inspiration aplenty for anyone daydreaming of rustic, yet stylish, country living.Traditional and contemporary styles are explored: an airy, minimalist sitting room looks out on to lush countryside; bunches of herbs and antique tools hang from rough-hewed beams beside a roaring log fire; an intricate stone floor shines through the sleek glass top of a contemporary dining table, where a bowl of fruit from the local farmers’ market awaits guests. The concluding section of the book is a rich sequence of images of the best that life in the country has to offer, from colonial New England farmsteads to life aboard houseboats in Pacific Northwest fishing hamlets. This is inspirational, aspirational lifestyle photography at its finest.

Anyone who lives in the "country" will relate to it. The photographs are beautiful, and thumbing through the book is a very pleasant way to spend an afternoon!!!

Even when they go to the country they don't stray off their immaculate veranda. Maybe I've just read too many design books but I found this uninspiring. There are plenty of nice photos of lovely houses inside, it's just that the authors seem a bit superficial and disconnected. These houses feel like ostentatious second, third or fifth homes, meant mostly to be displayed, not lived in. Handsome but empty.

6 of 6 people found the following review helpful. What a disappointment! By SuziM I got this one because I had enjoyed the first in the Protocol One series--it was well-plotted and engaging, and I liked the characters, even though the heroine made some pretty dumb choices (clearly not a reader of post-apoc books!). This book was so disappointing. The writing was really slap-dash, like it was written in a BIG hurry. Major grammatical errors and word usage errors. Not proofed, clearly. Here's an example, a piece written from Peter's perspective: "One of the most annoying problems I have had all my left was the inept ability to dream of whatever occupied my mind." Inept ability??? WTF?I am hoping the next one will be normal length, and not thrown together just to keep the ball rolling--a worthy sequel in the series. Sorry!

6 of 6 people found the following review helpful. It was just ok.... By Sandra B I am very disappointed for many reasons and a little shocked because all of Druga's books have rated 4 or 5 stars from me, except this one. Also, most of Druga's book are lengthy. This one was 159 pages. This book just went fast, with no peaks of excitement or chair gripping intensity. It also bordered on ridiculous because why would the President push such a position on a woman who in the first book, made decisions that nearly cost her and all the people in the bunkers life endangered?? Last, I am just not feeling this love relationship between Tony and Anna! Dumb!!

Well thought out and although it needed editing (Melanie Galvan is a good one) The mistakes didn't ruin it. Book 2 was so poorly edited it was unreal. You couldn't keep up with the story when pages 1,3,5 etc. was one book and pages 2,4,6 etc. had obviously tried to be fixed but make it impossible to keep up with the story. I am really disappointed.

When God Laughs & Other Stories, by Jack London

From the Publisher "Jack London is at his best - that peculiar best which is inimitable... Nothing is more important to note, however, than the soundness of the psychology of all these stories. They are made out of the deep fibre of humanity. By command over such material does Jack London hold his place in our literature. By command over the knack of clearly flowing, acid-biting English that often takes rich color." - Boston Transcript

From the Back Cover He was one of the most prolific American writers of the early 20th century, and remains one of the most beloved, but while his novels have remained continuously in print for a century, his short stories have been much harder to find.

Here, in one volume first published in 1911, are a marvelous selection of Jack London's short fiction, including:

When God Laughs * The Apostate * A Wicked Woman * "Just Meat" Created He Them * The Chinago * Make Westing * Semper Idem * A Nose for the King The "Francis Spaight" * A Curious Fragment * A Piece of Steak

These outstanding stories--of the sea, of the land, of the ordinary people who work them--are examples of London at this passionate best.

About the Author Jack London (1876-1916) was an American writer who produced two hundred short stories, more than four hundred nonfiction pieces, twenty novels, and three full-length plays in less than two decades. His best-known works include The Call of the Wild, The Sea Wolf, and White Fang.

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. London's best and worst By Karl Janssen This collection of short stories was originally published in 1911, about the middle of Jack London's career, when he was branching out from his tried and true Klondike subject matter, and experimenting with new settings and new literary techniques. The stories take place in diverse locales, including San Francisco, Tahiti, Korea, Australia, and the open seas. The quality of the stories also varies greatly, and in many ways the selections represent the zenith and the nadir of London's writing. Three of these stories, "The Apostate", "The Chinago", and "A Piece of Steak" are masterpieces of storytelling, among the best of London's career. On the other hand, "A Wicked Woman" may be the worst story London ever wrote, and at least two others here, "When God Laughs" and "Created He Them," could easily vie for that ignominious title.Rather than waste space discussing the losers, let's focus on the winners. In keeping with London's preoccupation with socialist thought and labor issues, "The Apostate" focuses on the oppressive life of a young man who has toiled as a factory wage slave for most of his life. "The Chinago" is likewise concerned with social injustice, relating the tale of a Chinese laborer in Tahiti who is tried under French law for a murder he did not commit. It is a scathing indictment of colonialism, and a stark depiction of the indifference to human life that European exploiters often displayed toward their third-world servants. "A Piece of Steak" is an excellent boxing story featuring an aging fighter, poor and underfed, who, in order to feed his family, must fight an epic battle against a youthful opponent. "Just Meat" is another good offering about two thieves who make a big score. "Make Westing" and "The `Francis Spaight'" are both gritty seafaring tales, satisfying but not exceptional by London standards. The most pleasantly surprising discovery for me was "A Curious Fragment", a futuristic socialist tale, set in the 26th century in a world reminiscent of London's fascinating novel The Iron Heel. It's an intriguing sci-fi story which, though all too short, offers plenty of social commentary and suspenseful drama.Despite some of the stinkers in this collection, overall the scales are tipped in favor of the good. Faithful fans of London will definitely find When God Laughs well worth reading. Those who know London only from his sled dog tales will find in this collection prime examples of how he successfully (and in some cases not so successfully) applied his masterful storytelling skills to an incredibly diverse range of subject matter.

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. London's best and worst By Karl Janssen London's literary work has been sliced and diced into so many "greatest hits" collections; it's always great when a publisher rereleases a volume of his stories in their original collected form. This gives the reader a glimpse into a particular stage of London's career, and also provides the opportunity to discover "lost" stories that don't make it into the many editions of "The Call of the Wild and Other Stories". This collection was originally published in 1911, about the middle of London's career, when he was branching out from his tried and true Klondike subject matter, and experimenting with new settings and new literary techniques. The stories take place in San Francisco, Tahiti, Korea, Australia, and the open seas. The pieces range quite a bit in terms of quality. Three of these stories, "The Apostate", "The Chinago", and "A Piece of Steak" are among London's best, masterpieces that alone are worth the price of the book. On the other hand, "A Wicked Woman" may be the worst London story I've ever read, and there are a couple others in this book that could vie for that title. A real discovery for me was "A Curious Fragment", a futuristic socialist tale, reminiscent of London's fascinating novel The Iron Heel. All of London's stories are available for free on the internet, but if you want to read a good, solid collection of his stories in printed form, with typesetting that's easy on the eyes, this inexpensive book is a good purchase.

The setting: Hollywood: the character: Pat Hobby, a down-and-out screenwriter trying to break back into show business, but having better luck getting into bars. Written between 1939 and 1940, when F. Scott Fitzgerald was working for Universal Studios, the seventeen Pat Hobby stories were first published in Esquire magazine and present a bitterly humorous portrait of a once-successful writer who becomes a forgotten hack on a Hollywood lot. "This was not art" Pat Hobby often said, "this was an industry" where whom "you sat with at lunch was more important than what you dictated in your office."

The Pat Hobby Stories, by Francis Scott Fitzgerald

About the Author F. Scott Fitzgerald was born in St. Paul, Minnesota, in 1896, attended Princeton University, and published his first novel, This Side of Paradise, in 1920. That same year he married Zelda Sayre and the couple divided their time among New York, Paris, and the Riviera, becoming a part of the American expatriate circle that included Gertrude Stein, Ernest Hemingway, and John Dos Passos. Fitzgerald was a major new literary voice, and his masterpieces include The Beautiful and Damned, The Great Gatsby, and Tender Is the Night. He died of a heart attack in 1940 at the age of forty-four, while working on The Love of the Last Tycoon. For his sharp social insight and breathtaking lyricism, Fitzgerald is known as one of the most important American writers of the twentieth century.

12 of 13 people found the following review helpful. Hollywood Without The Glamour and Glitz By C Jones Pat Hobby, once a successful Hollywood screenwriter, is nothing more than a pathetic has been. Broke, tired, and scrambling to find work, Pat takes on some unconventional methods to fill his pockets and put his name back on the big screen. But things don't turn out as smooth as Pat hopes. After all, as Pat himself repeatedly states, "I'm just a writer," and, "it's a dog's life." Pat's antics backfire and in almost every story he is left with nothing but humiliation. The Pat Hobby stories were written between 1939 and 1940, when Fitzgerald himself was struggling to keep afloat in Hollywood. Fitzgerald paints the Hollywood scene as cold, calculating, and manipulative. A place where kissing up is more important than the quality of your talents, a place where the writer gets no respect, and a place that most likely today harbors the same attitude that Fitzgerald so deftly described in his final days.In reading the Pat Hobby Stories, one can feel Fitzgerald's own sense of poor self-worth, despair, and hopelessness. Yet ironically, a twist of dark humor is thrown into the stories, evoking in the reader an ambiguous response of laughing at Pat Hobby while pitying him at the same time. This collection is not only entertaining and easy to read, but is one that will give you broader insight into the late great F. Scott Fitzgerald.

2 of 2 people found the following review helpful. If You're Curious About Fitzgerald, Read This Book By Andrew Corsa While I enjoyed these stories, they don't come close, in quality, to much of Fitzgerald's earlier work. While some of these stories are funny, and while some possess excellent sentences and great, interesting images, none of them shine like "The Great Gatsby" or "The Diamond As Big As The Ritz." When I first finished this book, I found it hard to imagine that the same man who wrote "Gatsby" also wrote this collection of humorous stories about a truly pitiful Hollywood writer.Prompted by my new fascination with Fitzgerald, I read Turnbull's biography of Fitzgerald title Scott Fitzgerald, and it was excellent. And now, in light of this biography and my experiences reading Fitzgerald, I'm convinced that this book helps to illustrate Fitzgerald's tremendous, personal transformation. In between Gatsby and Pat Hobby, Fitzgerald's life fell apart. His wife had experienced breakdowns and needed psychiatric care, and Fitzgerald himself was destroyed by alcoholism. His personal life fell apart, and he even tried to commit suicide. Fitzgerald, himself, frequently spoke and wrote about his "crack up." And this book, "The Pat Hobby Stories," reads as if it were written by a literary genius whose world had broken apart.Further, this book seems to be reflective of Fitzgerald's personal life and feelings. Around the time he wrote it, he was working at Hollywood, where he kept getting shifted from script to script. He was discontent, saying: "It's so barren out here. I don't feel anything out here," (Turnbull 1962, 293), and he described Hollywood as "a dump . . . A hideous town, pointed up by the insulting gardens of its rich, full of the human spirit at a new low of debasement" (Turnbull 1962, 317). This book, "The Pat Hobby Stories," which focuses on the silliness and pathetic-ness of Pat Hobby and his embarrassing adventures in Hollywood, probably captures at least a part of Fitzgerald's feelings for himself and the environment in which he lived.Ultimately, if you find Fitzgerald interesting, then I recommend reading this book - because it really says something about him. But if you just want to read a great book, I recommend you look elsewhere.---Two final, fun notes. First, Fitzgerald once wrote that Hollywood was "a strange conglomeration of a few excellent overtired men making pictures and as dismal a crowd of fakes and hacks at the bottom as you can imagine" (Turnbull 1962, 293). This is a neat quote, when seen in relation to Fitzgerald's fictional creation - Pat Hobby, the dismal hack. Second, Turnbull includes two descriptive sentences which relate, amusingly, to one of the Hobby stories: "At the same time [Fitzgerald] was trying to make gin a substitute for energy, and each week his secretary collected the bottles and disposed of them lest they be noticed in the rubbish" (Turnbull 1962, 298). After reading this book, you might see why this is interesting.

2 of 2 people found the following review helpful. Fitzgerald's Pat Hobby By A reader Fitzgerald's early fiction often deals with the case of the young man who harbors elaborate and perhaps outlandish aspirations for success. In the Pat Hobby stories -- Fitzgerald's last published work -- we see depicted a 49-year-old man whose dreams have collided with a bleak reality. Years after his brief heyday as a well-paid film writer in the days of silent films, he is now quite simply a failure. And yet Pat Hobby is a unique type of loser, one who sympathizes with the bosses and moguls rather than his fellow downtrodden peers at the bottom of the totem pole. Witness for example the startling scene in which Hobby, with righteous indignation, takes a lunch tray to attack an extra who had the audacity to sit at the VIP table in the studio canteen and refused to move. This scene offers a fascinating insight into Fitzgerald's own psychology, if one views Hobby as an alter ego for the author, while also raising broader questions about American culture."A Patriotic Short" is the story which best encapsulates these questions, as Hobby bitterly reflects on the contrast between his illustrious past, when he had a house with a swimming pool that was once admired by the President himself, and his current menial assignment editing a lame film script. Here, in just a few pages, Fitzgerald deftly weaves together the American obsessions with celebrity, the presidency, and of course the swimming pool, into a commentary on the idea of success itself.Any mention of a swimming pool by Fitzgerald evokes the sad fate of Jay Gatsby. And though we might find Hobby a less sympathetic character than Gatsby, in many ways he represents the other side of the same debased coin. Both are tragic figures, equally unable to fulfill their dreams of glamour, and perhaps both equally the victims of the American ethos of success.

A funny, moving, and unforgettable tribute to a girl's best friend

In Girl's Best Friend, author-photographer David Darcy explores the timeless bond between women and dogs. Since Indigenous Australians first shared their lives with dingoes thousands of years ago, dogs have been part of the fabric of everyday life in Australia. Traveling around the country, from the coast to the Outback, David photographs ladies from all walks of life as they talked about their dogs—from tough working dogs to pampered family pets.

My life gets busy and I don't have time to really wrap myself in a novel. Thumbing through magazines don't satisfy the desire for a 'real' story. Having a new book of short stories by a favorite person and author fits this moment of my life perfectly. I can savor each vignette in the time I have available. Short stories are highly underrated.... Books like this will bring them back. I have enjoyed this book tremendously. I have not finished it yet - I am saving it like a special gift of Valentine chocolates. One story at a time...

It doesn't give stitch instructions It does give you a short history of knitting and knitting machines and attempts to convince you how good knitting is for you as a stress reliever, etc. It tells you not to buy cheap yarn or needles. For me it wouldn't be worth $.50. I wouldn't even keep it if it was given to me. It is a total rip off.

Good ideas about not going crazy in the yarn store, because I did. First project for a baby sweater seems a little hard for the beginner, I stuck with blankets and scarves as they are easy for beginners. Just my opinion, double point needles for a beginner might cool down their enjoyment of the project-very involved

By Jules Balestone- (book 3 of the Avondale series) I was so excited for this book to be released and now it's finally here. Idk if it was all the anticipation or if it's the time between books but this book did not seem as suspenseful as book 2. I liked it, don't get me wrong but it wasn't so exciting that I couldn't put it down (which is what I was hoping for). It was just a rather slow paced story and not very intriguing. I'm sorry. I don't know why I feel the need to apologize but there you go. I guess I just feel disappointed. I was soooo excited. The other two books have been really good. I was hoping for another series like the "Five Kingdoms" but well... this fell short. Again, it's a nice story...but not epic. However, the story does begin where book 2 left off as the friends continue toward the city and Princess Ariel where they hope to find help for Olyva. Unfortunately, there are things and people that will hinder their progress. The one thing I do continue to love in this story is the fierce loyalty this group of friends has for each other. It's really quite extraordinary. The editing is well done with only a rare miss of a word or misspell. For ages 13+. I'm hoping the author will redeem himself in book 4 and produce an awesome, intriguing, dramatic and epic storyline. I'll be waiting.Sent from my iPhone

It is easily the best book of an already great series. It is full of suspense, intrigue and truly is pure entertainment.Toby's writing style is great because it reaches all ages. The protagonists always have a sound sense of moral compass and there is action, adventure and romance without the sexuality and senseless violence prevalent in modern society.
