I can't stand waste and I love the minimalist lifestyle. This is a great book if you are into the same sort of thing. It teaches you all about how material things just don't really matter that much in life and you should concentrate on other more important things. Nice and simple book just how our lives should be :)

A wonderfully friendly and practical how-to manual for creating the homesteading "simple life", with laughter included. Share Sue and Steve's adventures as they build their homestead in the northwoods with a bit of irreverent help from their fictional newbie neighbors, lounging JJ and his enthusiastic partner CindyLou. This is a book for doers who have done and dreamers who are just beginning. From homebuilt underground house to homemade wine, “Homesteading Adventures" is full of down-home how-to that will inspire anyone interested in living and creating their own unique life whether in the backwoods or in the city. With a foreword by Jd Belanger, former publisher and editor of "Countryside Magazine" and written in 1997, this book has now become a classic in the homesteading world, chronicling the first twenty years of Sue and Steve’s “ManyTracks” homestead. Revised and edited from the original, the fictional JJ and CindyLou have retreated a bit (per reader request) and some of the information has been updated but the main core of the original is still happily intact to help and inspire a new generation of “back-to-the-landers” of all ages and all backgrounds who are planning, ready, or already embarked on their own adventure into the homestead life.

Homesteading Adventures: A Guide for Doers and Dreamers, by Sue Robishaw

Amazon.com Review Sue Robishaw takes an unusual approach in her examination of of homesteading. She converses with two imaginary characters, J. J. and CindyLou, to tell the story of Robishaw's and her husband's move to rural Northern Michigan nearly two decades ago. The three commiserate about the Robishaws' trials, learning experiences, and misconceptions. With the help of J. J. and CindyLou, Robishaw simply, often hilariously, tells her story and offers no one-size-fits-all approach to homesteading. She also describes, in great detail, gardening tips, how to construct a solar oven, recipes, ways to become more self-sufficient by growing your own food, how to build a simple structure such as a home or outbuilding, and how to deal with critters. While filled with practical how-to information, the real joy of Homesteading Adventures is the story of the Robishaws life and experiences, told with gentle humor and affection, and mercifully free of self-righteousness. It's a real treat to read.

Review "A practical and entertaining look at self-sufficient living. More than a how-to manual, Robishaw offers an enjoyable and insightful introduction to homestead living and philosophy "Homesteading Adventures" to be an inspiring and useful book for improving the quality of their lives." -- Michael Emerson, Independent Publisher, Mar/Apr 1998"Her book is the perfect gift to inspire someone to take the first step to the Goodlife . . . She is truly a kindred spirit with the earth." -- Greg Prange, Northern Lights, Dec. 1997"Seed Saving, the outhouse, making maple syrup and the greenhouse, it's all here, making this one of the most comprehensive manuals on homesteading we have seen. And yet . . . it's much more readable and interesting than a manual . . . Anyone interested in homesteading is sure to enjoy, and benefit from, this very readable book." -- Countryside magazine, Jan/Feb 1998"This book is fun to read yet has a lot of good information; it would be a good one to read out loud to the family." -- Bountiful Gardens, Dec. 1997Based on two decades of homesteading in the Upper Peninsula of Michigan, Sue Robishaw's Homesteading Adventures is a practical and entertaining look at self-sufficient living. More than a how-to manual, Robishaw offers an enjoyable and insightful introduction to homestead living and philosophy through her amusing conversations with two fictional neophyte homesteaders, J.J. and CindyLou. With 20 extensive chapters, Homesteading Adventures covers a wide range of topics, including building a home, solar cooking, outdoor and greenhouse gardening, cooking, wine-making, solar electricity, windmilling and making maple syrup. Robishaw provides a wealth of practical information, photographs, drawings, and references to other homesteading books and resources which she and her husband, Steve Schmeck, have used over the years. As the subtitle promises, this is a book for those who have experimented with a homesteading lifestyle, as well as anyone who has dreamed of growing their own food, using solar power, or connecting to the seasonal rhythms of the earth. Whether rural or suburban, young or old, readers will find Homesteading Adventures to be an inspiring and useful book for improving the quality of their lives. -- From Independent Publisher

About the Author Sue Robishaw lives with her husband, Steve Schmeck, amid much wildlife on their off-grid, north-woods homestead in the Upper Peninsula of Michigan. Their interest in a sustainable lifestyle and world permeates their lives and work (which are seldom separate). A large organic garden and orchard is one of Sue's passions as well as the source for most of their food. She weaves all of her interests/passions/work/lifestyle choices together in a way that suits her belief in the joy of life and which changes color and pattern as new opportunities emerge and life changes. These include hiking, writing, watercolor, music and dance -- and designing and knitting colorful wool socks for warmth and fun!

By Barron Laycock Adherents of the `60s counterculture back-to-the-land philosophy will find much to enjoy and savor in this humorous but fact-filled book on homesteading self-sufficiency. I am lucky enough to have had a personally autographed copy of author Sue Robishaw's wonderful book "Homesteading Adventures" sitting comfortably on one of my bookshelves for years. I recently re-read it, and found it as refreshing and as practical a guide to exploring the possibilities of walking on the self-sufficient side of the dirt road as one might find out there in the Ethernet. Miss Robishaw uses the device of two fictional neophytes to pose the important questions regarding how one begins the process of shifting gears and thought processes toward increasing levels of personal responsibility for living "off the grid". And, by the time one is through casually rummaging through the pages, you find that she has cracked more than a single smile or two onto your face while also relating to you a lot of important and useful data about the possibilities for living a less materialistic and more user-friendly alternative lifestyle. In these days of ever greater complexity and ever more complete dependence on others for the woof and warp of our daily existence, for food, water, shelter, sewage, electricity, entertainment, transportation, and clothing, one is perhaps a bit startled to discover that we can each be much more actively and "proactively" involved in this process, that each of us can garner much of what we need to survive and prosper as human beings on the surface of the planet. It often comes as a surprise because many of us are so deeply embedded in the ethos of the material culture that surrounds us that we rarely are able to independently determine or recognize how many other alternative ways to live exist, and which are there for us to employ if we have the vision, nerve, and energy to do so. In her own way, the author helps us to come to this conclusion very quietly, gently, and with more than a little humor. She is well grounded, and along the way shows us how we can do everything from build our own cabin or earth home to how to make a small but eficient greenhouse to how to design, build, and erect a functioning windmill. While Sue Robishaw is certainly not a self-sufficiency visionary like Scott and Helen Nearing ("The Good Life"), she does provide a vital and valuable service to the reader by offering a lot of practical lessons regarding how to begin and sustain one's journey toward greater personal responsibility for one's own way of living. It is said that many millions of Americans continue to examine the basis of their own lives with an inchoate and poorly articulated dissatisfaction with the materialistic way of life they are currently embroiled in. To the extent a single book can make a practical difference in helping such folk recognize, understand, and act on this alternative vision regarding the manner in which one lives his or her life, this book is a terrific aid and a practical how-to manual rolled into one paperback volume. I highly recommend it. Enjoy!

Ideas for homesteading in the frozen North By Amazon Customer This book is a collection of ideas for homesteaders or others who want to live simply off the land. Robishaw describes a wide variety of projects and activities that she and her husband have done to survive and thrive that come with a minimum cost to the pocketbook and the environment. These include a windmill powered well, a solar powered electrical system, a solar cooker, a solar food dryer, outhouses, homemade wine and vinegar, gardening, saving seeds, and making maple syrup. Robishaw presents the information in the form of a series of dialogues between CindyLou and JJ, a pair of newcomers to the woods, and Sue, an old-hand at homesteading. The dialogues are meant to be cute and humorous, and perhaps lighten the tone of the text. However, I found them a bit tiresome and contrived in places. The book is not filled with detailed plans for constructing equipment, although there are a few useful diagrams. Instead, its value is in stirring up ideas in the minds of the readers, and giving encouragement to go ahead and try something new because it just might work. Set in Northern Michigan, it is especially relevant for readers from far northern climates.

Tucked within the true-to-life and often humorous accounts of the fictional couple's move to ruraldom are excellent instructions and guidelines for homesteading.I highly recommend this book, although I wouldn't advise its use as a primary resource for homesteading.

Little does she know where her latest relationship with someone a tad too young and handsome will lead. In His Shoes - How do you get even when justice isn't served? And if you succeed, what then? In the end life seems to have a way of working these things out for all concerned. R.I.P. Katherine Colton - A screen siren who committed suicide in 1970 is celebrated even today. But the question lingers. Did she kill herself? This movie star's greatest fan just has to know. The Miracle - If you want something bad enough -- like being the person you've always admired -- can your wish come true? Maybe so. But not necessarily in the way you think. Skyglow Undercover - He's sent undercover in what used to be one of New York City's grandest hotels. Problem is, he knows nothing more than that. He'll find out why, all in good time.

Distorted: Five Imaginative Tales on the Dark Side, by Roberta Smith

About the Author I like serendipity, synchronicity, and things that are strange. I've been known to stay in haunted hotels I heard about on TV, and like to read mysteries, paranormal novels, and books about spiritual law. I love a good ghost story so I wrote three as part of the Mickey McCoy Paranormal Mystery Series: The Secret of Lucianne Dove, Chapel Playhouse, and The Accordo. A graduate of the University of Redlands, I'm a lifelong southern Californian who grew up with TV shows like The Twilight Zone and Alfred Hitchcock Presents. In between Corvette outings with my husband and trips to Las Vegas, I write paranormal mysteries with a splash of romance. In a departure from that normal practice I penned these short stories that cross into the realm of the ironic and macabre.

I'm a very slow reader and had to force myself to put the book down, but once I did, I hurried back to it. These stories are very original and stylized. Each different in their own provocative way. When I read "In His Shoes," I thought that one would turn out to be my favorite, but after finishing "Skyglow Undercover", I thought "Wow, that one's unbeatable!" And they all compare well to some of the best big name writers out there. These five tales sometimes cross the boarder from supernatural to horror, then back to supernatural, all with a cocksure attitude. A small collection, but huge on quality. You can't go wrong.

In this book we do see a slightly more mature person. However, the book mostly about a faire held on Emily's estate is without great events. The end is a mixed bag. Emily handles a very difficult situation while keeping her core beliefs straight but is endlessly criticized for failing to plan an event while hundreds of miles away. Her feelings about Lady Barbara also seem to come out of left field. Gives an odd mixed result to the book.

6 of 7 people found the following review helpful. Ok enough with the Emily fluff and lets hope she matures a bit for the next book By Mr. Thomas A. Mckewen Another good book in this series though this one left me feeling it was just a filler. I keep expecting the author to strengthen Emily's character given she is 19 and had to struggle growing up. She acts more like a 13 year old which may be his intention but just stops me thinking of her as a real heroine in the story (less wimpy please).I like the way the world building is developing and how Emily's ideas are flowing into this world and changing it. Not sure any sane person moving to a new world would ever want to expose that world to an American Gun Culture which seems to be happening in these books. She seems bent and determined to introduce the worst aspects of Earth's Culture.Lots of the secondary characters in these books seem to be more interesting than Emily herself so the reader gets a real balance of good, bad and just plain evil characters to speculate about. The overall good vs bad and the greys in between keep the reader guessing as to who is going to turn out one way of the other and this adds depth to the books. You need to read this one to keep up with the overall underlying story, just don't expect quite the level of intensity or action of the earlier books. Hopefully there won't be a wedding book for Alyssa along similar lines to this one and that Christopher brings Emily's character more into line with her age and we see some real action in the next book.Well worth reading but only if you have been following the series all along.

3 of 3 people found the following review helpful. Emily learns hard lessons By Pen Name Great book! In this recent release we see Emily dealing with a lot of issues that force her to question her preconceptions as well as the challenges of applying her modern morality with the magical world. In this book, I believe Emily has grown more then she has in the previous novels, because she has had to grow in wisdom and political understanding, and not just in magical power (although that happens too).

Buffington The theme of this story, part of the "Orbit Unlimited" novel by Poul Anderson, is that American colonists seeks to leave Earth for the planet Rustum, the only "earthlike" planet yet discovered by humans. At enormous cost and sacrifice, they board an interstellar vessel and depart Earth. Earth has become Statist, with the Government aiming to educate young people away from believing in libertarian ideals. But as the starship approaches Rustum.... well, more would be telling.A good yarn by one of the greats of science fiction. RJB.

A ship of colonists who left Earth to avoid the despotic demands of the government is nearly halfway to their new home, when a message is received. Leadership on Earth has shifted, and politics is now in line with the colonist's wants. They are invited home. The ship is close to the point where it would be faster to continue on to the new planet, refuel, and head home. They must make a decision: trust the message and return home (where they may find it was a ruse and they are all to be executed for rebellion) or continue on to their objective, where life will be hard, yet free, and few will decide to take the return trip back to the rest of humanity.A bit of space politics. Overall, it was an okay story, though not one that stuck with me all that much. While the idea is interesting, the story does drag on. I feel it would have been about a quarter shorter if done by a more modern storyteller.
