2 of 2 people found the following review helpful. Don't waste your money on the paper version. By Ruth Saunders I bought the paper back book. This book is a waste of money. It is a small pamphlet. It doesn't give stitch instructions It does give you a short history of knitting and knitting machines and attempts to convince you how good knitting is for you as a stress reliever, etc. It tells you not to buy cheap yarn or needles. For me it wouldn't be worth $.50. I wouldn't even keep it if it was given to me. It is a total rip off.

Good ideas about not going crazy in the yarn store, because I did. First project for a baby sweater seems a little hard for the beginner, I stuck with blankets and scarves as they are easy for beginners. Just my opinion, double point needles for a beginner might cool down their enjoyment of the project-very involved

By Jules Balestone- (book 3 of the Avondale series) I was so excited for this book to be released and now it's finally here. Idk if it was all the anticipation or if it's the time between books but this book did not seem as suspenseful as book 2. I liked it, don't get me wrong but it wasn't so exciting that I couldn't put it down (which is what I was hoping for). It was just a rather slow paced story and not very intriguing. I'm sorry. I don't know why I feel the need to apologize but there you go. I guess I just feel disappointed. I was soooo excited. The other two books have been really good. I was hoping for another series like the "Five Kingdoms" but well... this fell short. Again, it's a nice story...but not epic.However, the story does begin where book 2 left off as the friends continue toward the city and Princess Ariel where they hope to find help for Olyva. Unfortunately, there are things and people that will hinder their progress. The one thing I do continue to love in this story is the fierce loyalty this group of friends has for each other. It's really quite extraordinary.The editing is well done with only a rare miss of a word or misspell. For ages 13+. I'm hoping the author will redeem himself in book 4 and produce an awesome, intriguing, dramatic and epic storyline. I'll be waiting.Sent from my iPhone

It is easily the best book of an already great series. It is full of suspense, intrigue and truly is pure entertainment.Toby's writing style is great because it reaches all ages. The protagonists always have a sound sense of moral compass and there is action, adventure and romance without the sexuality and senseless violence prevalent in modern society.

I was anxious to read this one.The story moved quickly & I was anxious to get to the end. I couldn't put it down.I just ordered book #4. Arcanius & hope to enjoy it as much as the first 3.I do enjoy all the Toby Neighbors books I have read & there have more thana few. I find his books keep me interested & wanting more.Harriet

In fact, both dogs and humans have special receptors in their brains to allow them to communicate with each other. The human brain has shrunk 10% since dogs domesticated themselves. That's because we relied on the dog's superior senses of vision and scent, so that our brains no longer had to have space for such senses. Instead, the human brain became fashioned for complex speech, thought, and the arts. Since dogs became companions for humans, Homo Sapiens has become Homo sapiens sapiens. That is, our own species has become more intelligent, although more deprived of acute senses. The book shows that civilization could never have been built by humans until dogs provided enough food through herding so that people no longer had to be nomads following herds of prey animals. There would be no Beethoven, Rock 'n Roll, Rembrandt, opera,. symphonies, or scientists if dogs hadn't taken care of early humans.

About the Author This book could be called, "A Linguist Looks at Dogs."' I used my research and analytical skills in Linguistics to show what dogs know, how they evolved, how they differ from wolves, how dogs communicate with humans, and how they communicate with each other, what dogs know, how they perceive the world, how they domesticated themselves,how they serve humans, and, most important, how they made civilization possible. Without dogs, we'd still be nomads, following herd animals to spear them for food. Instead, both humans and dogs co-evolved with each other. Humans, relying on dogs, had their brains refashioned to use complex language, thought, music, and literature. The swap involved humans losing sensory perception like hearing, vision, and smell, relying on dogs' sensory abilities. Meanwhile dogs developed the ability to understand human speech, even in conversations not directed to them. Dogs also are able to detect humans' moods. Only dogs and humans automatically veer their eyes to the left when face-to-face with another human. Looking leftwards allows one to monitor the right side of the other's face. The right side of the human face shows emotion. That dogs know this is proof that they co-evolved with humans.

Intriguing analysis of the evolution of the people-dog relationship By TRHOC Amazing explanation of the importance of the close bond between humans and dogs through millennia. The author presents insights not seen elsewhere. Starting with her own experience and love of dogs she analyzes how the relationship evolved between dogs and people. Especially intriguing are the questions she asks the reader. Rather than just expounding on facts, she often engages readers by encouraging them to understand the topic by asking "Why?." When we are asked "Why?" we fill in from our own experience leading us to a sort of "light bulb" or "ahah" moment in our understanding. Though a totally different topic, this book reminded me of the way Elaine Morgan helped us to understand evolution in "The Descent of Woman." It's a personal involvement in the subject that will keep you thinking and asking questions yourself long after you finish reading the book. A must read.

Dogs must be given more credit for helping mankind By Lewis Croog It is a wonderful perspective on how valuable dogs have been to lifting humans to another level beyond nomadic life styles. It is as though dogs not only herded sheep and other animals for human resources but also herded humans to live together and not apart like nomads. Dogs have contributed to mankind in unseen ways that I would not have noticed until I read this book. It is great insight and I applaud Elaine Ostrach Chaika for such an interesting read on dogs.

Her excellent scholarship is evident throughout the book By Janice Schuster This is a must-read book by a distinguished emerita faculty member at Providence College. The author spent many years researching dogs for this book. She deftly incorporates stories into the book from her own experiences over a lifetime of owning dogs. Her excellent scholarship is evident throughout the book. This book contributes greatly to the store of knowledge about dogs and civilization. As a librarian at Providence College, I recognize its top quality and am ordering it for our library. I recommend it highly for anyone who wants a deeper understanding of the history of humans and dogs.

17 of 17 people found the following review helpful. Better than I thought! By Holly Slaski I read some of the other reviews for this series before I bought it and thought why not? How bad could it be? And it wasn't bad at all. It was surprisingly very good, although calling this a series is kind of stretching the meaning of the word a bit. This is actually a novella length story that I was happy to read in an afternoon. I liked the interaction of the characters and the sex scenes were amazing without being overly detailed. I'm kind of hoping there will be a future series detailing Rebecca's time settling in on Palia after she and Karru arrive or even reading about Dechan trying to woo Ria would lead to a good storyline. The only thing not so great was the detailing. I think Erin Tate could have given us more details of Federation station Rilli and some of the alien creatures could have been fleshed out along the way. But perhaps that could be filled out in later books, along with back stories for the main characters. Either way, though, it was good and I'll definitely want to return to this world again should Ms. Tate decide to write more about it.

I had never read anything by this author before. I am glad that I gave it a shot. This book was cute. There was enough of a conflict that my attention was caught from the beginning. The characters were well developed, and I enjoyed reading about them. I read this book in one sitting, and wouldn't mind if there were more stories from this world the author created.I can say that if you give this book a chance, you will enjoy it.

By Tereasa This story captured my attention, both by title and cover alone; a powerful story. This story shows the very real, very dark uncomfortable spaces that people can occupy in their sad silence, places that most of us would not dream up in our darkest nightmares. This is only achieved by such detailed writing by Mel Murphy. This story left a lasting impression and has me reading more by the author.
