By Hoosier Tourist I had the good fortune to hear the author speak at a horticultural event a few years ago, and he was witty, humorous, and insightful. This book is the same! I would recommend it to the novice gardener as well as experienced professionals, even people who might not garden, but love plants and would enjoy a good life story.

I many ways I wish I had read it - to have some of his advise and wisdom 25 years ago when I started in academia. It is an easy read and is a good example of how life doesn't proceed in a straight line and goals change as opportunities arise. A very human story.

Karen Blaser does a wonderful job of telling her heart felt story of losing Chlesea and how painful that was, but how opening her heart to Sheba has been very healing. You will really enjoy this book!

7 of 7 people found the following review helpful. Brilliant Satire By Robert O. Adair John Kendrick Bangs was one of the most popular humorists in the 1890's. Most of what he wrote, though very clever, will probably come across as very dated today. One exception is A House-Boat on the Styx. This book is written in the succession of Homer, Vergil, and Dante as a major work on "The Lower Regions". It is reminiscent of Lucian of Samosta and several other ancient writers including Aristophanes. Bangs' story takes place in the afterlife when Napoleon, Washington, Baron Munchausen, Dr. Johnson, Goldsmith, Mark Twain, Kipling and others form a men's club which meets in a plush, luxurious houseboat anchored on the edge of the river Styx. Anyone who likes history and brilliant, satyrical wit would enjoy this book. It is a timeless classic.

Bangsian Fantasy By Kat Hooper John Kendrick Bangs (1862-1922) was an American humorist who edited some popular American magazines such as Harper's Weekly and Puck. His satirical novella A House-Boat on the Styx is responsible for the term Bangsian Fantasy, which refers to stories about famous people in the afterlife (e.g., Philip Jose Farmer's Riverworld series).In A House-Boat on the Styx, Charon the ferryman is dismayed to discover that he's got some competition in the transportation business -- a posh new riverboat has appeared on the Styx and there's no way his craft can compete. His fears of bankruptcy are relieved, though, when he's asked to be the janitor of the new boat which belongs to an exclusive men's club run by Sir Walter Raleigh. Raleigh and his colleagues spend their time playing cards and pool, smoking tobacco, and hosting fights (e.g., Goliath vs. Samson) and debates (Noah vs. P.T. Barnum: Which animals should have been saved from the flood?). They also have occasional business meetings in which they discuss agenda items such as whether or not there should be a Ladies' Day on the boat (yes, but Lucretia Borgia and Delilah are not invited) and whether poets should have their own Poets' Corner (yes, because then they won't be lounging across all the chairs, scribbling drafts on the pool tables, and boring everyone else with their recitations).There's almost no action in A House-Boat on the Styx and no need for characterization since all of the characters are already known to us. The story is almost all dialogue as, for example, Shakespeare defends the authorship of his plays, Solomon's Proverbs are called a hack-job, Confucius complains about the poets, the logistics of all of Henry VIII's wives attending Ladies' Day is discussed, Baron Münchausen is accused of making up stories, Sir Walter Raleigh is discovered to be setting up his witticisms so his biographer can record them, Jonah insists that his whale is copyrighted, and Eve laments that she never gets invited to Queen Elizabeth's parties because she has no pedigree.Much of this dialogue is very funny, but it occasionally comes off as a stand-up comedy routine when the jokes are transparently set up:Sir Walter Raleigh: ...Queen Elizabeth could have married a hundred times over if she had wished. I know I lost my head there completely.John Dryden: That shows, Sir Walter, how wrong you are. You lost your head to King James. Hi! Shakespeare, here's a man doesn't know who chopped his head off.Of course, it will be helpful to be familiar with these pre-20th-century characters and their "issues," but most adults will understand most of the allusions and the others can be easily investigated on the internet. I enjoyed the banter, but it was non-stop, so I was ready for it to end when it did. However, at the very end of A House-Boat on the Styx, some action finally did occur when Captain Kidd showed up. So now I'm eager to read the next installment, The Pursuit of the Houseboat.A House-Boat on the Styx and The Pursuit of the Houseboat are available on Kindle in the Halcyon Classics edition, which contains 48 works by John Kendrick Bangs for (at this writing) only $1.99. Both books are rather short and easily read in an afternoon.

There is a great description of how the plant consumes its prey. It provides details about its' natural habitat, distribution, and growth, as well as informative cultivation guidelines and tips. There are chapters about botanical history and conservation status which are interesting. The selected citations provide routes to more information. An all around good book for the beginner or experienced grower, or anyone with interest in the Cobra Lily. I love it because it is short, sweet, and the price is right!

A question of survival for our wildlife By Grady Harp Thomas Hollyday is a well-known writer of mysteries - there are 6 volumes in his River Sunday Romance Mysteries Series - but he also is concerned about the environment and has published two books on the latter subject.One of the reasons Thomas' book works so well for readers is the mater-of-fact neighborly way he has of expressing himself. In a very tender little preface he discusses a dream he had that changed his attitude, and then ties his dream into the content of this book: `So, after weeks of thought on this issue of animals and water, I decided to invent a water dish that would provide fresh drinking water to wildlife. It was one that was easy to use, portable, and worked in every season without electricity. I sold this device, the Solar Sipper, in markets all over the world. With the funds from this project, I began to champion preserving clean water resources for wildlife. These days, each morning I go to my backyard and place a Solar Sipper filled with fresh water outside for the wildlife. I always look around for a chipmunk with no tail. He'll be a descendant of the one I dreamed about. If I should spot him, I'll look into his eyes, give him a wink, and let him know that I'm trying.'In his introduction he offers many facts, most of which we haven't considered: `The purpose of this little book is to look into all the issues affecting drinking water for backyard animals. One thing is for sure. If our outdoor friends could get access to the safe water that our indoor pets enjoy, they would be a lot better off. That bowl of clean water next to the pet food dish is not always present in the back yard environment. You see, the indoor water passes the test of our town municipalities and water commissions. Before it enters the pipes to our house, it has undergone a bevy of corrections to make sure it is absolutely safe. If a new disease enters the water supply, the commission treats it immediately. This may not be true in all countries but it is for sure in the United States.' And from this opening he addresses taking Inventory of our backyard habitat, noting Waterer Type (`outdoor animals deserve the same care as indoor animals. Clean their water dish and add clean water daily with the food'), Analyze the construction of the Watering Device, Analyze where animals drink, Heat and Cold out in the yard (and how to regulate that), and then he offers Government-based websites and Private Organization websites from which to gather information.This is a sensitive caring book by a man who cares about not only how humans are going to survive the current environmental crises, but also how we are responsible for assuring that our precious wildlife, often dependent on us, are treated equally! By Amazon Customer Since I have birds and other wildlife frequent my backyard, this book was just what I was searching for. Since I feed the birds each day filling up a bird feeder and also give them fresh water, I thought that I was doing everything correctly. Then I read this book and learned to much about the need for pets and wildlife to have clean and fresh water and the correct type of water container. Since I was already into this for my own needs as far as water is concerned, of course I was also interested in the proper water and water containers for my feathered friends who visit my yard each day! What I especially like about this book is that the author is very, very knowledgeable and lists the safest types of containers and the need for pure safe water for the outdoor animals.**This book inspired me so much that I now give the birds natural and pure spring water and make sure that they have fresh water each day along with the bird seed.Another thing that I like about this book is in the back of the book are valuable website links such as the Audubon.org and more.This book is very well written and has been a joy to read! Highly recommend this book!

(The closest I came was when I was a kid and had a parakeet named Joe, who, according to my mom, was insane. How she knew this I'll never know.) Even so, I found "Rose and Kate Unleashed" to be at once endearing, cute, poignant, and hilarious. Told from the perspective of Kate, an English Springer Spaniel, and Rose, an Irish Setter, the book recounts the exploits and observations of these two dogs, as well as their interactions with their two-legged friends, Brian and Dee. We learn such diverse things as why dogs hate to take baths, what they are really up to when they're friendly with strangers (they hope that the stranger has some doggie treats in the pocket), how they stand guard when traveling in the car with their two-legged friends, keeping an eye out for potential danger, as well as methods they use for getting food off the counter when the humans are engrossed in a football game. And much, much more.In addition to an easy-to-read, hard-to-put-down text, the book has scores of pictures of Rose and Kate engaged in various doggie activities. By the time I came to the end of the book Kate and Rose had come alive for me and they seemed almost human (something they might not take as a compliment).If you're a dog owner, you'll love this nicely laid-out book. But even if you're not, you should read it. It will brighten your day, and you'll come to appreciate a dog's life in a way you never have before.

For Those Who Love Dogs By Spudman There's something special about the dog/human connection and that unspoken understanding between those who live with dogs. Live with a dog long enough and you learn to understand them and can almost read their little minds telepathically. In Rose and Katie's book the girls share their feelings and doggy secrets while the two-legged readers smile and shake their heads affirmatively while recognizing the actions and antics of their own canine companions.One blog entry reminded me of the time we left three dogs alone and returned to find in the living room an empty bag that had been a full, unopened bag of treats tucked away in a suitcase.You may have read other anthropomorphic books that try too hard to be cute and clever. Rose and Kate Unleashed doesn't fall into the cute trap, but is genuinely, amusing, entertaining, and even instructional. Readers can't help but deepen their appreciation of the love and selfless devotion given freely by our dogs. In two fuzzy anecdotes the girls share stories of heroism, instinctive, timely, and perhaps life-saving.Rose and Katie's book is one of those easy to read books with many breaks allowing the reader to stop for life's interruptions and easily resume the narrative. As you read this book the many photographs of the furry authors will capture your heart, make you smile, and even motivate you to look over at your own companions and give him or her or them an extra belly rub.Note- My favorite personal line was the one by Rose mentioning her affection for potatoes.

By Renee Rebuilding the Feline Kingdom after the Chihuahua War (for a detailed account check out 'Epic Tails 1') has been an arduous and time-consuming task, but well worth the effort to get back to normal. Unfortunately nothing lasts forever, and the peace will once again be shattered.The eyes, ears, and noses of our feline friends will be under attack when a bear with horrible breath and fancy yapping poodles show up on the kingdom's doorstep. Has all of their hard work been for nothing? Will there ever be peace (and quiet) in the Feline Kingdom again? Read the book to find out!!Epic Tails 2 takes us back to the Feline Kingdom and Benny the Bold as they try to find peaceful solutions to two new problems. Tygo Lee brings back some old friends and introduces us to some new ones in these stories that show us many incredible things.As with all of Lee's books, Epic Tails 2 is an inspirational journey to complete happiness that teaches important life lessons without preaching at you. Excellent continuation Benny the Bold's story By michael naylor I previously read the first Epic Tails book and really enjoyed it so naturally when I saw there was a sequel I downloaded it immediately. Like the first book Epic Tails 2 has stories and in each the feline kingdom faces a different threat. Each book seems to show a different side of the main character Benny the Bold. In the first book he had to fight to protect his kingdom however in this book more peaceful resolutions are found. In the first story the threat is from a Bear and the second a group of Poodles. The "attacks" in this book are of an olfactory nature instead of physical threats like the last book.In the first story the Feline Kingdom has been rebuilding for some time after the attack from last story. In the distance, they hear a growl unlike anything they have heard before. After a meeting Benny decides to find the source of this growl and assess the threat. Eventually Benny meets Baily the Bear who has been outcast from his people for having bad breath. Benny tried to talk to the bear but ends up insulting him accidentally by mentioning his breath. This angers the bear and he runs off in the direction of the feline kingdom. Benny follows him back and finds him eating all the fish in the moat around his castle. Benny tries to get him to stop and the bear eventually attacks him but Benny manages to jump out of the way and get the bear over the drawbridge into his castle. In the castle when Benny faces off against the bear alone but his secret weapon is waiting in the castle. I won't spoil the end of the story but I really enjoyed the way this one was resolved peacefully.In the second story the threat is from a group of poodles who yap constantly, smell of perfumed soap from their many baths and war ribbons which overall makes them seem ridiculous to the cats. A scout who has seen them relates what he has observed to the cats and explains that they appear to be on holiday and on their way to visit the cat kingdom as tourists. After much discussion a welcoming party is sent out to meet them to see if they really are just on holiday or if they have more nefarious motives (after all the last time a group of dogs made their way towards the feline kingdom it was with the aim of destroying them all). The scouting party and the poodles meet and find it difficult to get over their differences. Eventually the poodles arrive in the feline kingdom and are met by Benny. Again I won't spoil the ending but this story has a great moral lesson to it which Benny the Bold explains far better than I can.I really liked the fact that in this book peaceful resolutions were found. I did like the battles in the last book, but it was nice to see the author explore Benny's other side as a leader where he won his battles with words and kindness. I also liked how the second book mirrors the first in the sense that the first story has 1 threat and in the second story they are threatened by a group. Overall this is an excellent sequel to Epic Tails that actually exceeds the first however to fully enjoy it I do recommend reading the first book.

By Kitty Smith The heroic adventures of Benny the Bold continue in Epic Tails 2! I have to say this is one of the most entertaining fantasy fables I've read in a long time. The two stories are novellas in their own right so this book (and really if you get this you MUST get Epic Tails 1) will have you laughing and smiling over the saga of Benny the Bold and the Feline Kingdom for days. At first I thought it was written for children, and indeed the kids love it, but it's very entertaining for adults thanks to the clever and witty writing. Of course cat lovers will fall in love with Benny and his feline friends. I love the positive message infused throughout all of his exploits, in seeking peaceful resolutions and always searching for the truth, and of course an eternal message of friendship and bravery. Benny the Bold is a warrior poet, the Ip Man of the feline Kingdom, always seeking enlightenment and peace but never afraid to stand up and defend his people.Benny the Bold and the Feline Kingdom faced the harrowing dangers of Derek the Doberman and the Avenging Hoard of Chihuahuas and brought peace to the cat territories in Epic Tails 1. But peace is never long lived and in Epic Tail 1 of Epic Tails 2, a fearful sound unlike anything they have ever known has begun to emanate from deep within the forest. Morty the Mayor and the rest of the feline community turn once more to Benny the Bold to protect them from the potential threat. This time he sets out with six companions, and along the way they encounter a host of entertaining, often perplexing creatures, including some rather easily offended tree rats, When at last they encounter the source of the strange forest rumblings, they discover Bailey the Bad-Breath Bear, who strikes terror into the hearts of all who see him, as well as disgust into the noses of all who smell him. Benny must find a solution to prevent the bear's incapacitating breath from wafting into the Feline Kingdom, lest it render everyone incapacitated forever. Or worse, the bear might discover the Holy Fish Moat! It will take all of his wits to determine the best course of action, but as always Benny the Bold will seek a peaceful resolution.Epic Tail 2 begins with a beautiful day in the Feline Kingdom. The cats of the kingdom are peace loving, industrious, and quite spiritual, having been trained in awareness and educated with The Doctrine of Benny's Contemplations. Benny the Bold is, as ever, the stalwart, ever-present, epic hero who had put his life on the line again and again for the betterment of the community, and thanks to him life has been calm and peaceful for some time now. The Feline Kingdom's most revered warrior is also something of a philosopher and zen Buddha. Of course fate refuses to let the Feline Kingdom continue in peace for long, and when an incessant multitude of yapping shatters the peace and wrecks Benny the Bold's morning meditation, it is clear that conflict is once more on the horizon. This time Benny is called upon to deal with Yapper Poodles, a horror that sends shudders down my own spine. Poodles. God help us.
