Osier In this "sequel" to the more highly regarded TALES OF THE SOUTH PACIFIC, author Michener adopts a somewhat different format. For each of the South Pacific islands included, he first writes an essay about its history and culture. He follows the essay with fiction, an original story set on that island. He not only writes about such obvious choices as Tahiti and Fiji; he also includes both Australia and New Zealand. His story set in New Zealand, a World War II homefront piece entitled UNTIL THEY SAIL, later became a film. That's the one part of this book that I remembered clearly, after a good 40 years, when I sat down to read RETURN TO PARADISE for the second time.Michener's essays describe the South Pacific as it was in the late 1940s, several years before this "tail end" baby boomer was born, so today's reader needs to approach them as history and treat them accordingly. As such, they're intriguing. Some of the accompanying stories are equally dated, but I was surprised to find others echoing with human dilemmas only too familiar in today's world. UNTIL THEY SAIL didn't disappoint me a bit when read from a mature (think "old enough to be a grandma") woman's viewpoint, even though I last read it as a girl not long into adolescence. It helped me understand my parents' generation, then. This time around it reminded me that what happens to men and women separated (or brought together) by war is universal, and its dynamics never change.Michener is always worth reading. 5 stars for sheer durability!

Michener was honest about Paradise By Richard Dawid I purchased this book after seeing the 1953 movie based on one of the stories in "Return to Paradise". After reading the book, I discovered that Michener painted a picture of Polynesia and the South Pacific as being both a heaven and a hell. Unlike the 'travelog" descriptions by the media and travel indusrty, Michener is brutally honest. He describes both the things that make the South Pacific a place of indescribable beauty and a place exactly the opposite by telling interweaving tales of events and people in various places. These stories are eye-opening giving a taste of reality in this blend of fact and fiction.I recommend this as a mandatory reading for any American who wishes to go beyond the typical tourist venues of any of these South Pacific Paradises, otherwise they may be in for a shock. Until I read this book, I wanted to retire to and live in one of the many places Michener writes about. I now realize, where I live is closer to my idea of Paradise than what I envisioned the places of the South Pacific.

While reading Tales of the South Pacific, I was interested in the island cultures which played behind the main stories. This book delves into those cultures, as they were when the book was written. Nice stories.

Their purpose is not to conquer, but to stop potential interplanetary wars, so they allow annexed planets to continue to rule themselves. They do impose one rule, however: slavery is not allowed. And Aditya is a slave planet: .1% of the people own the other 99.9%.This marvelous little short story follows what happens as the Empire's representative, the inexperienced son of a politically well-connected rich family, goes about freeing the slaves, applying the high moral principles that he learned at university -- principles as firmly held as they are untested in practice.Originally published in 1962. The military elemtent is minor, as is the scientific speculation. This story is a commentary on the socio-economics of slavery in its many forms.

Justifying a five-star rating is easy: this is a wonderful story, well told, exciting, entertaining, thought provoking, educational, and enlightening.This is the story of a benevolent empire taking over a planet of about 12,000 masters and millions of slaves. The catch is the empire does not want to govern individual planets, but it does enforce an absolute prohibition of slavery. What can freedom mean to the inhabitants of this planet and how can the government and society be restructured!?Piper wrote S.F. where the `S' May be interpreted as science, speculative, or social. On the surface his stories are rip-roaring space operas, action packed and exciting, seemingly light fair, but oh so much more. Though largely self educated he had a superb grasp of history, sociology, economics, politics, and forms of government. These are brilliantly displayed in this story without being didactic.The outcome of this story is a bit predictable as it is the genuine logical consequence of the premises, how ever this did not detract from my enjoyment of reading to the very end as I was sufficiently interested in the central characters to want to see how they are affected by the final events.It was a joy to read this electronic transcription as it is well formatted and there are no glaring typos or elisions. It is a joy to read something that has been proofread and corrected.

0 of 0 people found the following review helpful. Another Sci-FI Tale from H Beam Piper By Fantasyman Not one of Piper's better stories in my mind. Not badly written, just, not my cup of tea. Having read much of Piper's work, I am convinced that he was a bit of a social Darwinist at heart, and perhaps more than a little of a Fascist. He seems to always believe that might will win out, that force and determination will overcome all obstacles, and that the mass of humanity are little more than willful pawns in the game played between greater powers. That the cunning and guileful will always lead the masses, conversely, that the masses are always weak and in need of a powerful hand to guide them. The whole intricate concept of free will doesn't seem to enter into the equation, then again, it is after all just a story.As I said, this isn't one of his better offerings in my opinion, then again, my opinion isn't what counts, yours is. Read it for yourself and decide.

The characters are well developed, likable, and real... The story is emotional, intense, and suspenseful... The writing is tactically correct and accurate- but doesn't sound like an advertisement... The plot is gripping, riveting, and never slows down... Goodwin has become one of my favorite authors and his writing is as good or better then anyone else in this genre- including Rawles... I have three concerns with these stories- first, I hope and pray that there are still people of faith and character that will not compromise... Second I worry that he has given the government a blueprint for chaos they might not have thought of on their own... And third- reading the book cost me an entire Saturday of productivity!!! Love this series- and his other series is great too!!! The scripture references and historical quotes show the depth and width of the authors knowledge... The topics and actions taken by the characters in the book are a good start for anyone looking to make a move towards self sufficiency... This is a gripping series and I am eagerly looking forward to the next one... Goodwin is an exceptional talent as an author and inspires and encourages others to increase in their preparedness and grow in Godly character... Great Read!!!

Now, Mark Goodwin asks us to do about the same thing, but where the world's most transformational religion, Christianity, is banned. "What happens" when "the general principles on which the fathers achieved independence", that which the United States was founded upon, "The Declaration of Independence laid the cornerstone of human government upon the first precepts of Christianity. - - John Adams" has instead become blamed for all its problems? When Patriots & Christians become the Jews of a new Fascist America? Goodwin takes us "through the looking glass" based on the events of our day - where the 1st Amendment's promise of the freedom of religion is no longer guaranteed, but suborned to "social justice", an economic reset looms on the horizon and Americans can be indefinitely detained or assassinated on the whim of a president. . A first rate read that continues where Mark's "Book One "Conspiracy" left you looking over your shoulder.

An Interesting and Informative Read By William Munns As a reader who grew up with a historian in his family I find the quotes and historical facts that this author incorporates into his series excellent-- as they will be a revelation to some and a prudent reminder to others. Goodwin's story works well on a number of levels; it entertains, informs, and warns. Many of tribulations that come Noah's way if not out of our daily news now--soon could be! Recently I heard a retired CIA agent state that an economic collapse was a given, his only caveat being whether it would occur next week or in years. Insights abound as to how a "collapse" might impact you or your family, what responses maybe forthcoming from our government, and what you may want to consider in preparing for such an event.

Norman the dog is back in another adventure. This time he is at the dog park. We are introduced to each of the dogs, full of unique personalities. After some playtime, it's time for a drink. Frank, the bully dog, doesn't want to let anyone else in for a drink and does some mean things to the other dogs. Norman decides to teach Frank a lesson. Will Frank become a friendly dog or continue his bullying ways?

I love how the author created dogs with names and personalities to match their breed. The illustrations were spot on and made the dogs almost human. I think young children will find the playdate at the dog park to be similar to one of their own playdates. Norman shows the way for kids to handle bullies and gives kids the tools to take action.

Like Allen's first book, this one also includes a rhyming scheme to make the story fun for the kids. At the heart of this story is true friendship and how it needs to be cherished. This golden rule lesson applies to the kids reading the story as well as to the adults in their lives. Tackles the topic of bullying through dogs at the dog park By Stacie Gorkow In STORMIN NORMAN: THE BARK IN THE PARK, Allen takes on the issue of bullying by telling it through dogs at the dog park. Each of the dogs at the park is expertly created with unique personalities. Their character is perfectly matched to their specific breed and the illustrations will tell the story as much as the words do. All the dogs are having a blast at the park. After a little playtime, it’s time for the dogs to get a drink. Frank, the bully dog, won't let anyone else in for a drink and does some mean things to the other dogs. Norman decides to teach Frank a lesson. You’ll have to read to find out if Frank becomes a friendly dog or continues his bullying ways.Like Allen’s first book, this one also uses a rhyming scheme. Even though this can make it a bit more challenging to write, it helps those early readers identify words when they know the last word in the sentence is going to rhyme.Allen applies the Golden Rule when talking about bullying. Discussion questions allow parents and kids to have a conversation about bullying that can benefit both the kids and the adults!

To get you in the mood for Valentine's Day By SJ A copy of this title was received in exchange for an honest review.Soul mates and love at first sight are what this title is all about. Tanya is about to lose her job. Adam is the new billionaire boss taking over her company. Both characters are very interesting and likable. Adam is a modern version of Prince Charming and Tanya the modern Cinderella. The story moves right along. It is a quick and easy read just like a Valentine's Day card you would get from your sweetie. The story was not very descriptive in the settings area but I found that I just made up what I wanted things to look like. I could only wish that real love were this true, quick and easy.This is definitely a stand alone and has an HEA.

A Feel Good Story for a Cold Winter Day By Susanne Matthews I've been fortunate enough to read all of Melinda De Ross' books, and I thoroughly enjoyed this novella. The plot is straight forward and simple, as is necessary in a short story. In some ways, it's very much a Cinderella story. In essence, girl down in the dumps thinking she's about to lose her job meets gorgeous man who sweeps her off her feet. While she has no idea who he is, he's well aware of who she is. When she goes to work the next day, he's her new boss. Angry and humiliated, Tanya leaves. Read the story to see how these two become one another's valentines.

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. This book is like a giant Candy Kiss! By Dee Archer My oh my! This treat was sweeter than a box of heart shaped chocolates! Delicious tale of two people first meeting by chance and falling in love at first sight. Truly a fairy tale romance. Adam & Tanya plan a life together without heavy baggage to challenge them. Definitely too sweet to be real but too delicious to be ignored. Nice change from the regular fare I'm used too. I was given this ARC in exchange for an honest review. Five Stars.
