Jacob Anderson is an ordinary man who sits at home, watching while Chicago is over run by what the news media calls 'rioters'. He waits until the rioters continue taking over more and more territory, spreading throughout the country side. Jacob and many others believe the law enforcement or military will soon quell what ever is going on. Until it arrives on his door step then it becomes obvious he waited just a little too long to leave the false safety of his home particularly when it hits his suburban neighborhood. When a military convey arrives to evacuate survivors he prepares to leave with his family. Unfortunately they are attacked and he is separated from them. With two national guardsmen, Murphy and Stephenson, also cut off from their unit Jacob joins them as they make their way across a city that has been over run. Jacob soon learns what he thought were just rioters are no longer human and to be caught by them is a fate worse than death. It is a non-stop night long battle as around every corner, every shadow could hide the seemingly unstoppable inhuman enemy whose sole purpose is to capture them. The fight scenes keep you on edge and are realistic enough to keep you wanting to know what happens next. This is not another zombie series but one with a twist that will leave the reader wanting to know more and just where it will all lead.

It's more Night of the Living Dead meets the Puppet Masters. It has a fast paced plot with plenty of twists to keep you turning the pages. I read the entire story in just two sittings. The protagonist, Jacob, makes the classic "Hero's Journey" which gives him an interesting and entertaining character arch. He begins the story as an everyman, a set-up engineer who trouble shoots factory assembly lines and he ends the story transformed into the wounded warrior willing to sacrifice for those he cares about. My one criticism of The Darkness is that it is maybe too plot driven. The protagonist's change from cowering civilian hiding in his attic to gallant solider was a bit too seamless. Having read other works by Lundy, I know he is a talented enough writer to explore some of Jacob's angst without slowing down the story's pace. I think it would have added to the story. Lundy did a great job doing that exact thing with Shane in Something to Fight For (a recommended read). With that said, Lundy is a gifted story teller and The Darkness is an excellent and entertaining read that I highly recommend.

Another great one by Lundy By default_character Lundy keeps up the pace with "The Darkness" and fans of WTF will not be disappointed; no prior WTF experience required! I liked that this was not your typical zombie fare, but the book did seem a bit short (in other words, left me wanting more!). I did not like the main character and his wife; he seemed like a deer-in-headlights and she was a bit unreal; however, maybe some (or most?) people would act like that given the situation. The soldiers were awesome as usual; I don't know many soldiers in real life, but I like to think that they're all this tough. Lundy is a very talented writer and does a great job in describing action scenes as well as giving you just enough details about his characters so you are left feeling you understand them a little. I'm really looking forward to the continuation of this story -- it was left wide open, and I want to see the good guys beat the villains who are much smarter than zombies...
