Felt like 40% fantasy, 50% sailboats, and 10% scenery By GJ First let me say that I really enjoyed book 1 in this series and felt that it moved the story along. This book stagnated a little too much for me. If you are interested in sailboats, then this book will be a 5 star book for you. However, for me, the author spent way too much time describing the various characteristics of different sailboats and how they are operated. I can only hope that the protagonist steers well clear of the ocean in book 3. The author also spent a little too much time describing scenery in my opinion. This normally isn't an issue, but in this case it took away from character and plot development. I would have liked to see a little more action and dialogue.Slight spoiler: worst of all, just when you think you are going to get some movement, you find a depressing cliff hanger (I hate cliff hangers, especially when they are depressing). End spoiler.Another issue I have is the way the author summarizes an event. For instance (I am making this up to avoid spoilers but it is similar to what happens in the book): the protagonist leaves an area, then the author writes something like "Joe was thinking of his time in the area, he had met a girl and found she was very alluring. The conversation they had and the kiss she gave him upon leaving was something he would remember for a long time". I don't like this style because it feels more like history and takes the reader out of the feeling that they are part of the adventure with the protagonist and removes some of the suspense. I think this style can be used, just not for significant events that a reader should experience in the present. Finally, the little stories/poems at the beginning of a chapter seem a little random to me. I would like to see them have a little more to do with what happens in the chapter.All that said (and I admit the review seems a little harsh), I still look forward to the next book. I think the story has a lot of potential. I like the protagonist and the plot is interesting. I would like to see book 3 be a little more like book 1 than book 2. The author is better than most self published authors with sentence construction and editing. I think the series needs to be at least 4 books based upon the pacing so far and hope the author thinks the same.

This book and series left me screwed in that, and that is a good thing.Moves the story of Lian and his struggle forward quite a bit. Ending is suspenseful and....and of course ends just to where you go COME ON!Good writing a lot of it yes centers on the ships but considering the actions and things that happen its more realistic than what most authors preffer to move the stories forward. And besides you see Lian grow more into what he is going to be.Is it as good as the first one? Nope most aren't Most middle books tend to leave people feeling unsatisified...why? Because people have a long time to build up on expectations which are impossible to meet. Add that to the story being a continuation where there is no fresh new beginning and no epic ending...well.Over all a good continuation of the series can't wait for the third book.

You compare other series you read, but they never equal. As an avid fantasy reader, mine was the “Legend of the Seeker” series until now.The level of descriptiveness adds to the world building in my opinion. I was also surprised at the emotional connection you feel to the characters.This may not replace your favorite but give it a try. You may be surprised.
