Origami Christmas Treats: Paper Fun for Christmas Trees (Origami Holiday Book 1), by Yuri Shumakov, Katrin Shumakov

About the Author Katrin and Yuri Shumakov - a stellar artist-duo, professional origami creators, who started their origami journey in France in 1989 and since then they unfold this art in a heretofore unseen way! They have created amazing paper world ORILAND with incredible fantasy Kingdoms that impress with rich detail of majestic castles, abundance of paper flora and busy life of little paper dwellers. Their newest kingdoms Toy-ronto and Albuquerque combine fantasy and reality together, presenting a whimsical artistic rendition of iconic sights of these cities. Another beautiful and elegant aspect of origami they brought to life is ORIBANA - a marriage of two Japanese arts: Origami and Ikebana. By combining these remarkable art-forms, in early 1990s Katrin and Yuri began to create paper flower arrangements in paper vases and thought up a distinctive name for it - Oribana. Since then they designed more than 50 charming oribana-compositions with a broad variety of origami flowers and vases. Being prolific origami authors they created more than a thousand of origami designs from simple forms and cute characters to complex dinosaurs' skeletons and architecture that all have a distinctive Oriland style. Psychologists by education, Katrin and Yuri have studied how origami helps children learn. Their Ph.D scientific work shows that by doing origami, children develop better use of both hands and that origami can improve creativity and intelligence in children ages 7 to 11. They believe that origami is "entertainment for the soul, gymnastics for the mind, and training for the hands." In 1999, Yuri and Katrin received the Silver Award in the ThinkQuest International Competition for their 'Travel to Oriland' website and it brought them and their team to Universal Studios Hollywood for the Award Ceremony! Their Oriland.com website became a winner of the Childnet Award that was given them in Paris, France. Both these projects were acknowledged as high quality creative, educational and fun websites for children and adults. Yuri and Katrin have written more than 30 origami books and instructional CDs, and their works have been exhibited in many countries including several venues in the United States, France, Spain and Canada. The Shumakovs also extend their artistic talents to the realm of photography and music. Katrin is a winner of the Toronto Photo Contest 2010. Yuri is enjoying music composing and sound design. They live in Toronto, Canada, love yoga and a healthy style of life.

By danielle frederick This is such a great tool to have when you thinking about getting a puppy to become a part of your family. It showed me things I wouldn't have even thought about. I have a little girl who wants a puppy very much and we were thinking about surprising her with one but now I see how the home and everyone in it should understand the duties that accompany having one. I will definitely be using all the tips given in this book to prepare our household.

I really liked the tips about doing your research beforehand, making sure all family members understand the role of the puppy in the home, and practicing consistency with the puppy. One thing I would add regarding training the puppy for tricks and obedience is to do it AFTER a long walk or run. Tired dogs are more obedient as I've learned from having dogs for several years. Nice book with sound advice!

You could google it and get much more helpul information. The book was free with my prime, so it's okay!I would have been upset if I would have paid for it.If you have internet, I would suggest using a search engine for basic training commands instead of this book:(

Doctor Who: The Tenth Doctor Volume 1- Revolutions of Terror, by Nick Abadzis

From School Library Journal Gr 7 Up—The Doctor returns for two new adventures in time and space in these graphic novels featuring the 10th and 11th incarnations of everybody's favorite time-traveling alien. In Revolutions of Terror, Gabriella Gonzalez dreams of a life outside the family business and a break from the yoke of her father's relentless work ethic. When strange things start happening around her neighborhood and an even stranger pinstripe-wearing man shows up at her family diner, Gabby soon finds herself running for her life and fighting to save the world. After Life introduces Alice, a young woman struggling to keep a roof over her head and her hopes alive. After a chance encounter with a bow-tied stranger, Alice finds herself hunting for a rainbow dog, facing down aliens, and traveling the galaxy in a familiar blue box. Readers new to Doctor Who will appreciate the stand-alone feel of these two titles; neither book requires significant knowledge of the series to be enjoyed. Different artists and authors give each volume a slightly unique look and feel, with illustrations ranging from caricature to realism. Both Alice and Gabby slip into the role of companion nicely, and the manic energy of the 10th and 11th Doctors are captured well by the artists, though David Tennant is depicted more effectively than Matt Smith. VERDICT For libraries that have a large Doctor Who following, these two volumes will be excellent and popular additions to the stacks.—Clair Segal, LREI, New York City

3 of 3 people found the following review helpful. then you won't be disappointed by this book By JC JIM. Allons-y, Dr. Who fans. If you are a fan of the 10th doctor, then you won't be disappointed by this book. The author does a wonderful job and capturing Tennant's essence. It truly feels as if you were watching an episode of the show as perform by David Tennat. The artist was a revelation to me, she is flipping amazing, the panels are great, the characters look beautiful. Seriously if you like Dr. Who this is one series you cannot miss.

2 of 2 people found the following review helpful. Gorgeous By Adam Graham, Superhero and Detective Fiction Author This book features adventures of the 10th Doctor set sometime after Series 4.To start off with, let's talk about the art: Wow! Elena Casagrande nails the art. Her likeness of Tennant, of the TARDIS interior is perfect. She puts so much into each character. The art throughout this is incredibly complex and rich. I've rarely seen a comic look this good unless it was painted by Alex Ross. The stories are fairly good. Gabby makes a great new companion. She's a likable and interesting character who you can easily relate to. The stories were fairly clever themed. I'd like the first one centering on New York's celebration of the Day of the Dead, and the second one on another planet involving a reclusive artist and her insane assistants. There were some decent concepts, with the second story revisiting the idea of block transfer mathematics from the Fourth and early Fifth Doctor era without seeming too wistful. The biggest problem is that while Casagrande captures the physical appearance of the Tenth Doctor, Abadzis really struggles that Doctor's unique voice. There are a few parts of the book that are a bit verbose, and I should there are some elements in the second story parents might find problematic. Still, this is a gorgeous book and gives a wonderful new look at Titan's 10th Doctor Title.

2 of 2 people found the following review helpful. Great start for the 10th Doctor from Titan By Jesse Conrad I enjoyed this graphic novel better than the 11th Doctor graphic novel, The After Life, in terms of both the stories and the artwork.First, the cover artwork by Alice X. Zhang is simply gorgeous! I hope to see some more of her artwork in future Doctor Who issues by Titan. As for the two separate stories, I find Nick Abadzis to be an excellent writer. There are times I felt that a certain page was a bit too wordy but he does bring such depth to the story through his writing. There were a few scenes which I felt were clearly a rip-off from "Rose", such as the Doctor telling Gabby to forget him after their first encounter. I absolutely loved how the second story was told which was through Gabby's journal. Very original and unique approach in writing comic books! There were times that I've found Gabby's small handwriting hard on the eyes but I found the handwritten texts very refreshing, considering the art of handwriting is becoming a lost art in today's generation. Handwriting brings out so much of a person's personality.Elena Casagrande, the artist of both stories, did a marvelous job drawing out the stories. She had the knack of making the story almost seamless through her artwork. I think she truly succeeded in capturing Tennant's likeness, something that Simon Fraser and Boo Cook have failed in with their Doctor, the Smith Doctor. Arianna Florean's coloring - such bold and vibrant colors. Her work really compliments Elena's work really well! More Elena and Arianna please!Looking forward to the next volume!

A French writer has boldly affirmed, that with the exception of women there is nothing on earth so agreeable, or so necessary to the comfort of man, as the dog. This assertion may readily be disputed, but still it will be allowed that man, deprived of the companionship and services of the dog, would be a solitary and, in many respects, a helpless being.

Sheehan Some great stories of dogs in here if you can get through the sometimes repetetive and sometimes over-effusive 19th century writing. Much of it is arranged by breeds, and i learned some interesting things.

6 of 6 people found the following review helpful. This series is the complete package... By Michael Cast Noah Mann is perhaps one of the most COMPLETE authors I've ever read. There are many authors that I follow, and I enjoy their work immensely. Then there is a select few that I get REALLY excited about. Noah Mann has (within just three books) become one of the later for me. This author has the whole package; He writes each book as if it were going to be The Ultimate Book of his career. The story never seems hurried or published with the bare minimum of words to make a quota, or just enough to get paid. Nor are they stuffed full of drawn out monotony that can make the reader lose interest. And the stories are crafted so well; the spelling and grammar is nothing short of near perfection. Now, I've never been one to nit pick a few typos anyway, because it's the STORY that's important, but this guy is an artist.. AND, the story is GREAT as well. And then there is originality; finding a new concept (the BLIGHT) in a genre that has been done to death, deserves mentioning too. ALL the above skills working at once...wow... And he has chosen fiction as his turf. It's like Einstein teaching fifth grade. (GOODIE FOR US!) Here's a short summary, no spoilers:Eric, Neil, and Elaine must make an arduous journey through the wasteland that used to be the heartland of the United States in search of the origin of a mysterious and amazing miracle caught on a grainy video: a simple tomato plant growing...a PLANT actually growing! A plant growing somewhere in a greenhouse. The origin of the video, is just an educated guess made by a now deceased child genius. They must travel a thousand miles to get to the miracle that might not even be there by the time they can reach it. A thousand miles through a wasteland filled with an endless infestation of cannibals, crazies, and traps. And then bring it all the way back...

At Grannie's the customer steps into a room with a sign next to a hole in the wall that say's "deposit $5 and step thru the door". He does so and enters a another empty room with a sign that says "you're really close to a real good time". Deposit $20 and step thru the door. He does so and finds himself back outside facing a sign that reads "Thanks, You've just been screwed by Grannie". I did'nt mind buying the rather short books. I enjoyed it enough to continue. But when I finished the third book and was left in the pacific ocean heading to Alaska I lost my cool. I don't give a damn how this story ends. I am not being screwed by Grannie again.

Spoiler alert for those who don't what to know what the book is actually about. This one has Fletch, Neil, Elaine and Burke headed for Cheyenne, Wyoming. Its a thousand miles or better across the wastland of America. Its a trip they feel they have to take. A trip that will answer the questions about the video with the live tomato plant.Since there are no cars the trip will be made on foot. Oh joy. They have the locations of cache's of food and supplies that have been left along the way Only problem is some of them, the ones in green cans, are booby trapped. They find this out when Burke is killed opening one. Food and water are becoming a big concern for Fletch and the others. Many of the other cache's have already been discovered and emptied. Those in the red cans are safe. They also have to watch out for other survivivors. People who will kill you for what you have and some who will make a meal out of you. You are considered food to some folks and they will have no problem killing you and butchering you for food. There are no plants or animals to eat. You will become food for some. They finally arrive outside Cheyenne and after careful study they find what they are looking for.So begins one kick ass read. This one has Fletch, Neil, Elaine, an Air Force Col named Ben, a Ben who tells them about a man named Borgias, a psycho named Moto and his men, people who are held as food and taken apart peicemeal so they remain alive, a missile silo, the finding of an orchard with live fruits and vegetables, a notebook, seeds, the failing health of Neil, a return to Banton, a discovery that throws Fletch and the others for a loop and Fletch and his crew in one kick ass read with another on the way. This one headed for Alaska.Five Stars and then some.

In a post-Impact world there are Kings, subjects, slaves and those desperately fighting to remain free. Twelve years after The Dying Time Impact, Joseph Scarlatti reigns as King of California, but his empire covers the remains of the entire West Coast. Now he’s set his sights on the Colorado Freeholds and the Nation of Deseret (formerly Utah) and he hasn’t forgotten about gaining control of the top secret weapon that can assure him of world domination. Meanwhile on the moon, where the crew of the International Space Station relocated to survive, the population is growing, resources are getting scarce and their power supply is failing. There’s also a growing fear that if anyone on Earth gains control of The Weapon they’ll use it against Luna City.

In every way this is a great read - thrilling, interesting, logical twists, and a plot that keeps surprising at every turn. And very well written. I loved Book One, and Book Two is even better. I keep checking to see how much more I have to read because I don't want it to end. Please get Book Three out there soon!

2 of 2 people found the following review helpful. Our hero at times seemed to have super human abilities that are hard to believe but then ... By terry lussier Reading The Dying Time spent a lot of time setting up the effects and aftermath of the asteroid and laying out the characters and how they interact and build the bases for the follow-on book "After The Dying Time." This was a full blown carryover from the first book. Even though there are a few sentence structure and spelling errors it was well written and the story line was solid and flowed very well. You certainly get your moneys worth. I was a real page turner. Our hero at times seemed to have super human abilities that are hard to believe but then again it is fiction and entertainment. Good job and I am looking forward to the next installment. Just keep up the value for the money by not trimming the page count.

4 of 5 people found the following review helpful. The first novel sets us up - this novel brings so much of it together! A really good, entertaining book! By Dave Avis What a really great story! In this second book of the trilogy, the characters are more developed and more familiar. The well developed plot and sub plots really hold the readers attention and keep the pages turning. Even at the end of this second novel, the issue is still in doubt, making the reader - me - thirsting for more and waiting impatiently for the next book to be written. The author does a very good job and is a really good wordcrafter. Thank you for a week's wonderful entertainment!

8 of 8 people found the following review helpful. Now I said all that I still think the book is better than most apocalypse books and the characters are interesting ... By Lady Tara 8 Interesting series set in Ireland after an EMP stops all electronics in the country. The author does seem familiar with Irish history to the point of England being able to send help and once again not doing so. The U.S. and Canada send no help either though and that is not addressed. The rest of Europe does not send aid either and those countries are not mentioned . So it's as if Ireland and England exist in a a vacuum. It's been four years since the pulse and not much as changed as far as getting the infrastructure back up and running. I fear the series is running out of the reader's ability to willingly suspend disbelief as to how the country would function 4 years later with no subsequent bombs going off. Although there is hope for an explanation I don't want to mention because I don't want to post a spoiler. Now I said all that I still think the book is better than most apocalypse books and the characters are interesting and likable.

4 of 4 people found the following review helpful. The amazing Irish End Games series! By Dinidoodle The Irish End Games books are so adventurous and exciting they're hard to put down! Mike and Sarah and their friends and relatives go through a literal hell after the apocalypse in Ireland. They keep trying to find a safe place to stay and never give up, even though they always end up having to move on. Just the daily struggle to survive and to feed everyone is overwhelming at times. They suffer many terrible things, but always persevere.Mike is what I call a truly honorable man, and Sarah is so brave, they are wonderful leaders. Their love for each other and all the other people in their story is amazing to read.If you enjoy reading exciting, well written and edited books, and stories about heroic people and brave adventures I promise you will love these books. All the stories seem to be possible to me in an apocalyptic world. Ms. Kiernan-Lewis leads us through her plots in a logical manner but you never know what will happen next. I highly recommend you start at book 1 and read the entire series. The first book in the series, Free Falling, is free on Amazon right now. Start there and plan on a wonderful reading experience. Books 1 - 3 and 4 - 6 are also available at a bundle price on Amazon. Book 7 is available now, and book 8 is due in summer 2016, and there will be one more in the series after that. I am looking forward anxiously to next summer and missing Mike and Sarah and the whole group already.

5 of 6 people found the following review helpful. ~~Trials and Tribulations away from Ameriland~~ By Off Grid..and Loving it! Sarah and Mike continue on their trip to find both Gavin and John. By the time Mike and Sarah left Ameriland, Gavin had been gone a couple of weeks and John about one. This story takes place four years after the plague and although it hasn't arrived in Ireland yet, it is getting closer and closer. And, there is no cure on the immediate horizon. One of the characters in this story is bound and determined to either be given the cure or that it not be given to anyone. So, a power struggle is taking place in the arena of the scientists, as well. .There is a lot of action in this book on multiple fronts. Everyone is traveling around and facing their own tribulations. And, it seems as though at every new location, another set of problems occur. Sarah and Mike are absolutely committed to finding the boys. Gavin and John are both just as adamant about returning to their home in Ameriland. Details about a cure for the plague surface and create havoc for one of the main characters. The characters are well developed even though some of them have a short life span in the story! The trials and tribulations the characters encounter are incredible but at the same time most believable. All in all, an outstanding read and the ending was a real surprise... which of course leaves me waiting for the next book! Most highly recommended.

By Adron On the surface, Wayward seemed like my kind of book - lovely artwork, interesting setting, cultural mythology inspired themes, cool character designs. Outside of some Twitter recommendations and the brief synopsis, I jumped into this knowing very little about it. Unfortunately, I didn't find it to be a fulfilling or entertaining read.*** Mild Spoilers Below ***I wonder if this is the kind of book that really "works" for readers who are newer to comics, who don't recognize the tropes and repetitive story elements. I don't mean to diminish anyone else's enjoyment of the book. If you loved it, that's great. But, for me, all of the story beats were too easy and too familiar: Main character runs into thugs/trouble in an alley; is saved by the perfectly timed intervention of a stranger. Protagonists meet and fight before abruptly deciding to be friends. A "team" is already hastily assembled by the 3rd issue (including the Nikaido character, who joins more-or-less by default with almost zero introduction). It's the comic book version of a D&D starter adventure, just with different stage dressing, with echoes of every classic Marvel Stan Lee tale. The book carries a "Mature Readers" tag, mostly because of Shirai constant swearing, and Rori's self-destructive way of dealing with stress overload (which is one of the more interesting parts of the story). But nothing about the dialogue or story feels mature. Yes, the characters are teenagers, so maturity in their own characterizations should vary. But the conversations are very flat and VERY on-the-nose. Rori's inner monologues were particularly bothersome in their telling-instead-of-showing manner. (The "OMG, I'm not a leader! What's happening?! Why am I leading?!" section was particularly grating.) The "witty" banter doesn't have any bite. It all feels like a CW TV show aimed at teenagers, just with more F-bombs. The emotional core - feeling displaced in an unfamiliar country; struggling against uncommon circumstances - doesn't have room to breathe as the plot rushes forward. The last chapter of this first volume ends with some pretty heavy events. But they come too quickly, happening to characters that have had so little development. So the big "shocking" ending doesn't have any weight. That cliffhanger should have made me salivate for the next volume. Instead, it created an easy jumping-off point. I didn't get enough enjoyment from this book to want to spend any more time in this world. The phrase "Good for you, just not for me" comes to mind here. Wayward may well offer exactly what a lot of readers are looking for. It just didn't entertain me, or inspire any emotional reaction other than mild frustration. The world-building and visual design are very strong, but the story didn't make me care about any of the characters.

Glad I Found it By Julia McDowell I bought a copy of Wayward a few weeks back without reading the summary first because of the cool cover, and as soon as I opened it and saw that it was set in Japan, I just groaned. Wayward is, shamelessly, a story that has been told before. But it was my bad for not paying attention, so i figured, if I have it, I might as well read it, even if it wasn't what I normally would. This comic definitely has more than a little of the "Japan worship" thing going on, and it has a bit of an old concept, with a non-Japanese person entering the culture and suddenly having to deal with its supernatural world. That's most of the reason why I have to give it four stars. Besides that, Rori starts off as a kind of boring protagonist who (surprise) doesn't get along with her parents and (surprise) doesn't fit in.That being said, I actually really enjoyed Wayward. Tokyo isn't portrayed as a wonderland, and the authors aren't afraid to show the ugly parts of the city. The monsters are interesting and the artists are very good at bridging American and Japanese comic styles. The art is brilliant and very colorful. It did seem like the author was aiming the comic at the anime/manga crowd, and that the readers were expected to know more than a little about daily life in Japan before the story started, but not in an off-putting way. It's clear that everyone did their research. The monster designs are pretty sweet while staying fairly accurate to actual mythology. Without giving too much away, I will say that the plot is interesting and, as the first volume, this book does a good job introducing all the characters and setting the scene. They're not incredibly complex at this point, but I can already tell they will be.This comic is being compared to a lot of others, particularly Saga. From the quote on the back cover to the illustration of Akane wearing a "lying cat" t-shirt, the publishers are literally begging for Wayward to be compared to Vaughan's work, but I think this does Wayward a disservice. The two have completely different concepts and different styles, and to hold up Saga as the measuring stick for this comic is unfair. If you liked Saga, you may or may not like Wayward by the same logic that someone who loved Star Wars may or may not like Harry Potter. Wayward has a lot of things that Saga doesn't have, like a semi-realistic setting, a young narrator, and a much different plot. All in all, it's a pretty good read. It appreciates Japan without going full anime on anyone, and for a first volume, it does a great job opening the story. It's not the greatest comic ever conceived, but it's definitely worth picking up.

I'm playing it safe and going with two.The story is pretty mediocre and typical. Outcast, teenage moves. Teenager discovers she has powers. Monsters. Meets fellow superpowered teens. Monsters. Traumatic event. Monsters. No new trails blazed here and I walked away nit caring to read anymore of the story. The art is what earns the two stars here. Nothing special about the art but it doesn't mess anything up either.
