Every quilt has a story. Their stories explain how the fabrics were chosen, what inspired the quilting design, and, of course, if the quilt was created for a special occasion or event. But what is a Story Art quilt? Art quilts are usually smaller than traditional bed quilts, and are often more heavily embellished. They are intended to be displayed as wall hangings. They may be enhanced with delicate embroidery, or laden with all manner of buttons, beads, ribbon and lace. Today’s art quilts may feature elaborate thread painting or crystals, and even wonderful examples of fabric manipulation. For those reasons the art quilt has been compared to the Victorian era crazy quilt, differing however, in that most early crazy quilts, no matter how fancy, were intended to be used as quilts and bedcoverings, whereas, today’s art quilt is created in the context of fabric art for art’s sake. Story quilts on the other hand, are as varied in size as they are in theme. They are created to record a particular story, event, or series of events, and may have a single image about which the story is told, or several blocks, similar to traditional album quilts. The images in story quilt blocks however, differ from block to block, and the blocks are meant to be ‘read’ like pages. They may depict anything from nursery rhymes on a crib quilt, to stories of folklore, to a family history on a king size album quilt. African American quilting often incorporates traditional quilt making with graphic imagery, bold color choices, and innovative quilting techniques. The genre of African American Story Art quilts offers a concept of combining the sometimes elaborate dimensional embellishing techniques of art quilts with the deliberate imagery of Black history or folklore in an album quilt format. Story Art quilts with multiple blocks usually do not have duplicate blocks, and may often have blocks of different sizes on one quilt. The majority of the quilts here are from three Special Exhibit collections of my work. They were created for an international quilt show circuit. They include story quilts based on folktales, art quilts based on Black history, and four of my replicas of historic African American antique quilts. The first exhibit, Quilted Pages – A Storyteller’s Quilts, was originally seventeen pieces created in the themes of Black history and African folklore. That exhibit now consists of twentysix quilts. The second exhibit, Imancipation To Inauguration, includes a Black history triptych. Sheroes – Influential Women in History, is the third exhibit, which consists of seven quilted panels. These collections have been displayed at seven venues across the country since early 2011 with Mancuso Quilt Show Management. The venues included Virginia, New England, Pennsylvania, New Jersey, Colorado, Florida, and California. One of the quilts, Cathy Williams – Buffalo Girl, was created by request for inclusion in the three year, multi-museum tour, And Still We Rise… curated by African American quilt historian Dr. Carolyn Mazloomi. The Cathy Williams quilt will also be in Dr. Mazloomi’s next book for that exhibit. Each of the quilts in this book is an original, unique, decorative, and informative piece of art which I hope represents and exemplifies a diverse cultural heritage. The intention of my work is to combine art, craft, design, research, history, and culture in traditional and contemporary pieces as a cross-disciplinary approach to quilt making. My quilts and their themes are deliberate and are usually historical in nature, utilizing traditional materials in innovative ways. Although many quilters sometimes include images of important or historic figures on their quilts, my quilts often include printed information about the image as part of the quilt’s design, transitioning the piece into the genre of information art.
