By Kelly Maldia *I received a copy of this book in exchange for an honest review.*I do have a thing for urban fantasy books with angels. So when this book came up for review, I raised my hand to read it. I’m glad I did.Nova is a human. Or should I say was a human. Out of a chance of fate, she was changed into nephilim, a being of angel and human descent. With the help from Ben, Zeph, Ransom, and other nephilim, they are trying to help her figure out how and why she is changing. What she doesn’t know is that there is another group of nephilim, Ibira Corp, who wants to study her to find out why she was able to be changed. Now she’s in a struggle for her life and freedom.The story has a little sci-fi twist with genetics. While I normally suspend reality in urban fantasy/paranormal stories, the genetics gave it plausibility to it. The story was action packed. Plus we have nephilim with abilities! No two abilities are alike. We meet some interesting characters. There are people who can cure illness, take pain away, freeze you, fly, and be able to control you with their voice. There are many more, both interesting and terrifying. It had an X-men vibe to it. Nova was a great character. She is strong, smart and sassy. She’s a fighter. While the book did have some romance in it, it was light side. Ben is swoon worthy guy. His abilities have caused him to distance himself from others. Nova does an incredible job acquiring his trust and being patient for him.Overall, the book is solid. It’s a new take on the angel genre. The end has a little cliff hanger, and the version I read had a sneak peek of the next book, Nephilim Code- Edward. I couldn’t help myself and had to read it. I will be signing up for updates for this series as well as pre-order the next book when available.

A great combination of action, humor, intrigue, good vs. evil, and a wee bit of romance By 2BBNB Nova Quinn is a smart, sassy, fearless young woman with her eye constantly searching for the perfect shot to be photographed. One night on the roof of her apartment, minding her own business with her camera in hand, she hears a disturbance and starts taking pictures. No way did she just see two men fly up into the air...What the heck just happened, and why is her strange but handsome new neighbor one of them that disappeared like a shot into the night sky?Ever curious Nova sets out to meet her new neighbors to get answers. When a chance introduction with her roommate's new love interest makes her sick, only the new neighbors can help Nova deal with what is happening to her.Zeph and Ben Angelis are brothers and Nephilim. Only other Nephilim can see each other's powers and abilities so why is it that Nova can see what they are? As in any society there are good and evil, having a human see what they are makes Nova dangerous and wanted. Her human side is dying and now they need to get to the bottom of what her new powers may be.First off, we love stories involving Angels/Nephilim etc. Nova did not disappoint. There is a great combination of action, humor, intrigue, good vs. evil, and a wee bit of romance brewing through this easy to read and follow story. Nova is strong and fearless, Zeph and Ben (even Julius) are dreamy while each dealing with their powers differently. Every character we meet are well written and described without being overloaded with dialogue. We are super excited to continue this journey and pick up Book 2: Edward, when it is available. 4.5 Sighs

6 of 7 people found the following review helpful. Cliffhanger By Charrlie The story was good and I would give it a better rating but I have a few issues. It needs an editor, my grammar is not that great and even I picked up on this. I had no idea what country it was set in other than it was not the US until the very end when you find out she is returning to Melbourn. I think books that end in cliffhangers should have advanced warning. It is a cheap sales gimmic and I have no respect for authors who do this.

Fifteen years ago an auto accident took the lives of Rachel and Sarah's parents. They moved in with AuntMomma. It's Rosh Hashanah and Rachel and Sarah are visiting AuntMomma in Providence, RI. In the past, Sarah had run off with Tony which caused AuntMama to nearly explode. The relationship didn't last, but it didn't bring back the closeness with AuntMomma. Now, Rachel brings home Leonardo who she'd been dating for five years. How well will AuntMomma accept Rachel's choice in men? A great story, easily read, greatly enjoyed. These short stories by Lisa Shea are so very uplifting --- they are all about the power of love.

Peter Bagge - or at least Crumb seems to think so, since he turned his anthology comic, Weirdo, over to Bagge, who was just at the start of his career. Bagge is an amazing comic artist, with razor-sharp and laser-tight observations of the "sufferin' bastards" of America. He has longed deserved a book that explores his angles and aspects as an artist, satirist and empathetic soul. And here it is. Editor Worcester has gathered essays with real substance, not the usual fannish drool. Worth getting and reading.

There's something endlessly fascinating about Bagge's body of work and Kent Worcester is to be commended for pulling this all together. I have loved all my "Kings" novels.I was peacefully reading along, thinking maybe this was going to be a more predictable plot. I should have known better! Bout a 1/3rd of the way in is a plot twist that makes steep mountain switch backs look like a straight, flat roads. OMG! was that ever wild. I couldn't put it down that rest of the day and just before falling a sleep (finally bout 11pm) I finished it. I am so waiting for the next book!Donna does such a fantastic job of populating this landscape with so many super characters, so many storylines, so many avenues for those mind boggling twists and turns. There's not a book of hers that I have read that has not been thoroughly enjoyed and savored. There are so many of her characters that I want to hear their stories. Ulrick - yeah he has helluva of story to tell. Rhi - oh that one could be a goodie! The new fellow, Darius, peaked my interest for sure. And of course - Constantine, when do we get to him???? If I could go 10 stars I would. ~P~

It takes a lot of writing skills to keep the premise of the story in sight and weave individual stories around various central characters and that is no mean feat.Donna Grant continues the saga of the Dark Kings in “Night’s Blaze” as she takes the fight to Rhys, the Dragon King stripped off his powers. Unable to shift and help his brothers in battle, Rhys steps away from Dreagan and hiding from the world. Convinced and brought back to his brothers by Rhi, his mission is to destroy the rogue Dragon flying among them and keep Lily safe from any danger.Lily Ross has left behind a torturous past that left scars physical as well as emotional. But with the love and support in Dreagan land, she keeps a job that gives her a reason to hope for a new lease of life. And a certain Dragon King is sure stoking the fires of passion and love. But the betrayal that had left too many scars on her body and soul rears its ugly head to becoming a stumbling block in their relationship.And fate sure wants Lily and Rhys to build on that attraction, as they are destined to be mates. Needs more concise approach By Susan Drees I've recently begun reading flash fiction and have discovered some that I really like, that in a concise, though not unartistic, manner create atmosphere, character, story, mood. They are complete and often wonderful. Mr Nash's stories, however, seem wide of that mark. Often more lengthy than I find effective, often full of impenetrable language, they are organized as if following some sort of educational curriculum, under headings for art, physics, extracurricular, etc. Some of the stories fit their categories in obvious ways but, for me, most did not.The shorter the better with flash fiction. In the second half of this collection, I found several that were far more successful, in my opinion, than most of what came before. Some I really liked. Nash finally removed that detachment which had lost me and prevented me from engaging in many of his other stories. He also found his edge--providing sharper endings--and became more precise.As I wrote in a review for another collection of flash fiction, I do believe there may be disagreement about what is good and what is skilled in flash fiction. But the important factor is for the story to grab the reader---and to do it quickly. Sadly most of these stories did not do so for me. Those that did grab me, did their job well (Crowd Sauced, In Triplicate, Laundry Lists, Confirmament, Disbanded, Zombie). All in all, though these are outweighed in a collection of 50 stories.A copy of this book was provided by the publisher through NetGalley in return for an honest review.

A Mind-Blowing Read By wondermommy EXTRA CURRICULAR by Marc Nash just about blew my mind, especially with one story about a funeral and how things got twisted from one situation to another. A very complex book. What makes Nash's stories so unique is the way you have to think outside the box, so to speak. Nash kept knocking the reasoning back and forth to the reader like a ping-pong ball, leaving the reader to study more on the story and how it might have come about in the author's mind, than onto paper. Deeper isn't the word that comes to mind. Nash's stories seem to go down into the abyss or into a deep void, then the reader has to reach inside the gray matter and really think about what has been read in order to pull out the true meaning; or could there be more than one meaning? The man sure does make the reader put things into an all together different perspective. A different kind of read, but enjoyable.

Yes, you will find some of the stories to be not to your liking and others will surprise you with the end. Some may even make you shed a few tears. The writing can be a little much sometimes and overwhelming, lacking a smooth flow. This however didn't deter me from continuing. It's a perfect book to sit and read before bed or when you only have a few moments or between books in a big series. Definitely a fun read for any occasion.

It's practical By Gisela Hausmann “Don’t sweat the Vet” is a short but very complete book written by two sisters; one is a writer, the other a vet.The book relates valuable information with regards to• selecting a veterinarian• preparing for visits (regular visits as well as emergency visits) and• clearing up common myths, e.g. that dental cleanings are NOT “that” important for your pet.The book is very nicely done and complete; The authors had a great way of presenting old topics in a new light“…It’s astonishing how many people understand the necessity for a yearly physical for themselves or their children but don’t seem to feel it should be necessary for their pet. While some cynics view an animal doctor’s insistence on an annual checkup as a way to ensure business, it’s actually the best way for a vet to detect a problem before it become serious. The checkup also provides future benchmarks for comparison so a doctor can learn, for example, if there’s a change in weight or blood chemistry. Remember too that animals age much more rapidly than humans, so a lot can change…” (I take my cats to yearly check-ups, but I have never heard it put so nicely as in the quoted paragraph.]I loved the many hysterical pet pictures, which help to make the topic lively and the book “longer”. [I also appreciated that the authors took the time to list all picture credits in the back, very nicely.] The book is too short, as it is it is probably more of a booklet than a book. By Maya Rushing Walker I feel incredibly lucky that I was able to read a review copy of Sandra Ann McGregor's new book, DON'T SWEAT THE VET. I wish I could hand out a copy to every owner of a new puppy or kitten (or bird, for that matter--yes, we've taken birds to the vet!)! If you are thinking about acquiring a puppy or kitten, or perhaps if you find yourself needing to take your pet in to the vet and you are wondering how to organize the visit--get this book. The book is broken down into logical segments covering how to research and locate a vet, what to plan for before the visit, and what to anticipate during the visit, as well as post-visit tips. While I currently use a wonderful veterinary clinic near our home, as well as an emergency clinic in town, I have had a few negative experiences in other towns when I have had to suddenly find a vet for a new puppy or sick animal. It really isn't fun to suddenly need veterinary services and to not have the time to research and locate a good match for your needs. Veterinary care can also be expensive, so thinking about what kinds of services you are likely to need over the years that you spend with your animal friends is well worth a bit of care ahead of time.Sandra MacGregor is a great writer, as well as a great photographer! She illustrates her book with some of her fun animal photography. Her sister and coauthor, Sarah MacGregor, is a veterinarian who provides great insight from the perspective of the medical professional. Please do pick up this book and spend some time thinking about how you are going to handle your pet's vet visits, BEFORE they happen!

By dltd I was given a PDF of Don’t Sweat the Vet to review and I have to say I wish that it had been written years ago when I first became a pet owner. Taking our furry, feathered, and scaly friends to the vet can be traumatic for everyone concerned, but Don’t Sweat the Vet will help even the most frazzled pet owner get through these visits with the best outcome. Sandra MacGregor and her sister, veterinarian Sarah MacGregor, have put together a concise, informative book that touches on just about everything you need to know.The first section gives tips on how to find the best veterinarian for your pets. They emphasize the importance of doing your research before your pet actually needs to see a vet and provide several links that will take you to sites that rate veterinarians and clinics. They also list items you need to take into consideration before you make your decision.The next section outlines what you need to do before the visit. Most of the suggestions are commonsense, but the worried owner of a sick or difficult pet can become distracted and easily forget things they would normally remember so it’s a great checklist to have.The third section deals with the visit itself, giving advice on what to look for in a good vet and staff as well as what information you need to provide regarding your petThe final section gives great advice on how to keep your pets healthy.My favorite part of the book? The animal pictures that are scattered through. Prepare to have your heart melted. You won’t be able to help yourself.
