Kids love the Country Cat Family! They are a real cat family who owns a photographer/writer who captured their antics as they walked with him in the woods over a number of seasons. He wove their images into a series of children's stories and enhanced his images with art renderings. In this book of 43 large colorful illustrations, the Country Cat Family wait for the cold weather to lift. Palamino and Carmella, the young cats, especially, wonder what adventures might wait for them in the woods. Until then, Dad, or King Tam, notes winter is coming after seeing his old friend, Barney the Barn Owl perched on a limb. King Tam settles in to tell his wife Winkie and the kids Carmella and Palamino that winter would soon be upon them. No chance of going out to play in the woods until it has passed. So images show unique pictures of the entire cat family playing, running, sending letters at the computer and being close to each other as each waits in their own way for the cold weather to pass. Ultimately, it finally does, setting the young reader up for Book Two, Palamino Gets Lost!

A predator hunts the skies over Earth. Its intent is peaceful, and its mission is essential, but it is the deadliest machine humanity has ever created. Piloted by a six-year-old girl, the godlike Skalm guards the Districts of TASC. Her family is long dead. Her adopted father is a synthetic copy of an alien, her nanny an artificial mind, connected via subspace to every part of the globe, feeding the young girl information, finding prey to satiate her growing thirst. But the young girl is but an innocent, a victim, one of millions the war has already claimed. Her innocence has been sacrificed by a man with singular purpose: a man who will stop at nothing in order to prepare earth for the coming conflict. For the armada is approaching, its far off engines now bright as stars in the night sky. They mean to kill us. They have the power to do so. And as oblivion’s maw opens up to engulf us, we brace ourselves for battle. We will fight to the last. Live or die, we will leave a scar upon our attackers that will last an age, even if we, ourselves, do not.

Disappointing Conclusion By Amazon Customer I enjoyed the first two books in this 3 book series and was looking forward to this third edition to the series and ended up very disappointed in the conclusion and how things wrapped up.So much more could have been accomplished in this series but I felt the author wanted to wrap things up and move on to something new.The end felt rushed.Battle scenes in space could have been more detailed between the Skalms of both fleets as they involved main characters and to suggest in a footnote a short story is coming later about the orphans and their fate leaves a poor taste in one's mouth. That final battle should have been detailed and included in this final book. This lack of detail contributed to the rush feeling of bringing the book to closure.Very dissatisfied on how the Author chose to write-off the main characters of Neal and Ayala. Wrote them off about half way through the final book and things became fragmented after that and started to jump around months, years passing. These two were the main characters. War crimes .. give me a break. Guess we need to punish Minnie and the rest, they certainly used the technology of brain case technology that Neal secretly did that you wrote him off for. Underage kids allowed to volunteer, not reality. I think the point is, you can't write the main characters off for this crime and turn around and use what they did and allow Banu's brain to be yanked out and placed in a brain case. This ark only justified the crime. Anyway, the author destroyed the cohesion of the book, the two characters that held the story-line together by dismissing the characters of Neal and Ayala half way through the third book. Very dissatisfied by this.So much more I could talk about that left me unhappy here. I simply feel there was missed opportunity and this final book could have been better, much better.

But the prose was so overly flowery and attempted poetic that this book was laborious to read and finish. That the many fine and overly salicious meanderings of the flights of fancy of this winged beast that parted the air with its brazen passage thru the volumous resistance of the air molecules themselves, the import clear to the wild cheeks of insensate calm... Ok, I think you get the idea. Otherwise a great story.

10 of 11 people found the following review helpful. Good conclusion to the series, but left wanting more. By KC I waited till December 22nd to start the Fear Saga so that I'd have no continuity issues when I got to the concluding volume of this series. I was pleasantly surprised by the first two books - the science and fiction parts were cogent and I felt a connection to the characters as well.My first feeling after completing this volume was a sense of incompleteness. A lack of closure. I felt like several loose ends were left hanging. I also felt the ending was rushed, a stark contrast to the middle chapters of the book where I felt the plot was hardly progressing at all. I really felt a disconnect when I was reading the chapters written from the perspective of the aliens - it felt like they were pretty much exactly like humans but with weird names.I had difficulty reading a few chapters, because of the author's preferred style of getting into the crux of the action without sufficient exposition. More often than not, I felt like this was the literary version of a shaky-cam movie; too much action with nothing to focus on. I'll get into details at the end of the review so that I can give spoiler warnings. In terms of the resolution of the saga, I felt that it was satisfying. I had problems when it came to specific character arcs; particularly the ones that we've been following since the first volume. The effects that war can have on humans and humanity was quite effectively demonstrated through the entire series. We also get a glimpse on the pros and cons of having ubiquitous surveillance and artificial intelligence and how it disrupts the life of people - excellent perspective on the future of civilization and scientific advancement.SPOILER ALERT: In terms of characters, Neal and Ayala's story arc was far from satisfactory. Even though they clearly venture into what was inhuman treatment of innocent children, at the end of the day, that's exactly what the rest of them ended up doing during the final battle. I would have loved to see if they got a chance at some kind of redemption for their atrocities, but to abandon them half way through the book on the island was disturbingly abrupt. I wanted to see them held accountable for their crimes, but we didn't get to read through the trial nor the aftermath of their fate at the conclusion of the battle.Same problem with Princess Lamati. We get all the type about this almighty nutcase, but in the end what for? She gets to camp out on the moon? Hmm.I had a terrible time with all the Birgit chapters. I was unable to visualize what she and Rob were up to on Phobos. I know they wanted to crash their ship there and hack in to the IST, but the details of their landing and the manipulation of the device are deluged in convoluted sentences and not very helpful descriptions. Clearly what she was able to achieve had unparalleled impact on the story yet I was left dazed and confused at end. Similar issue with the O-Pu alien character. I feel like there was a lot of 'hand-wavy' explanation to her part in the story. If anyone can clarify how Birgit was able to use the IST against the Skalms or what O-Pu was up to as a comment to my review, I'd much appreciate it.

By Maribel @ Platypire Reviews I was both sad and excited to read this book because it is the last in the trilogy and I need to know how things end with all those involved. The book starts off kind of slow, but it was worth the wait for all the action and suspense that happened afterward. There were so many moments that had me cussing at Augustus because he is EVIL. I had a feeling that some of the horrible things that happened would happen, and then the end was left kind of open. It wasn't a tidy close to the trilogy, but I found myself okay with it. It leaves us wondering what will happen with Honor and Ryder. Maybe Lindy will write more books for the series, maybe she won't. But either way, if she decided to write more about them, she has left it open to continue their story. There were some sad moments where I just really felt for Honor and Ryder. They go through some excruciating ordeals that would have left any sane person unstable. And Honor is unstable for a while, but we see how she recovers when she has Ryder by her side. Lindy's writing has undoubtedly improved and kept me engaged and in suspense as to how everything would play out. There were definitely some shocking surprises at the end, and I was quite pleased with how everything turned out.Insignificant gets 5/5 Platypires!

I was satisfied with the conclusion but a bit sad that there wasn't more. I became attached to these characters and their story. Love Lindys' style of writing, she captured my interest , had a kick ass female lead in Honor. My only wish was that there was more romance. I didn't realize that this was a YA novel but never the less, enjoyed this series immensely!

This series was anything but a normal Lindy Zart book, yet it was still incredible. I'm a little sad that Honor's story is over, but it ended every bit the way I had hoped for. This last book was hard to put down as it is filled with non-stop action. Another incredible page turner by an author that has quickly found herself at the top of my must-read list.

Cool Hand: An Amber Farrell Novel (Bite Back Book 4), by Mark Henwick

Review Charles de Lint, in a review of the series for Fantasy & Science Fiction:"They represent some of the best the field has to offer."

About the Author Mark Henwick was born in Africa and left out in the sun too often. An early interest in philosophy and psychology was adequately exorcised by tending bars. And while trying to enroll in a class to read Science Fiction full time, he ended up taking an engineering degree which splendidly qualified him to move into marketing. That in turn spawned a late onset career in creative writing. When not working, he gets high by the slightly less conventional means of a small light aircraft, or down and dirty on a mountain bike.

By Amazon Customer Amber returns to shake up the world.Amber and company have just come off their most important battles, House Farrell and Pack Deauville have reached detente with the counterparts in Denver. The Matlal have been contained; Nagas are on the run, the Confederation has been sent packing, and Nobel the rogue has been revealed and killed. The time has finally come for Amber to deal with her own problems. If only it could be that easy... for every problem that Amber deals with it seems two come up in their place.Diana her chosen Athanate mentor has still not returned to Denver. The FBI still wants to know how Amber fits into the puzzle that surrounds her. Olivia is getting closer to her time of change and Amber still does not have any idea how to help her change to wolf. Her relationship with her sister is broken and her family has never been farther from her. In addition her were and athanate natures are starting to overwhelm her and she's worried that they will start to push her to rogue behavior. In the midst of all this we come in on Amber finding herself sidelined by the commitments she has ended up binding herself to with her allies. Yet her instincts are telling her that she needs to be in New Mexico. The Confederation has been spotted there, Diana was last seen in the area and House Romero that was allied with Matlal is silent. In addition she must discharge her duty and find the kin of Larry Dixon and rescue them if she can.||~~||~~||~~||~~||~~||~~||~~||I really enjoyed the story but found it a little too action packed. The characters are not really getting any down time and because we are bouncing crisis to crisis we still are in the dark about just how everything in the world works. In addition the effects from what has already happened in the story may not have reached the entire hidden world. I realize that this is fiction but so much has happened and we haven't seen the full reactions of the world. This means that in my mind we need the time so everyone allies and enemies can come together before anything else can conceivably happen; because I can't see so many of these long lived beings ready to improvise more and more in such a changed world. I was also really hoping that more information about the world would be passed on as we see Amber build her own house and Pack. The ending was well integrated and showed that no matter what happens the story is moving forward. I wouldn't be surprised if echoes of that event become more significant as the series goes on. So many threads are finished or move on that I wouldn't be surprised if events in the background could or did occur. In many ways this book ended the first part of the series Amber has now entered the hidden world and now must assert her role and work for Emergence. That being said I am upset how Amber's crisis was left. It's been hanging over her head for the last few books and while interesting in my opinion it doesn't add much to the story. Having her "working toward equilibrium" and making it less fatal would have left the stories just about the same at this point. It sound as if it might be resolved quickly for the next novel which I look forward to because she only has a couple of days to meet the FBI.Here's hoping that the books keep coming ASAP because I know that I'm hooked and can't wait for the next one.

There's always a feeling of betrayal when people of your own group oppose you. - Catharine MacKinnonNearly all men can stand adversity, but if you want to test a man's character, give him power. - Abraham LincolnThe most powerful weapon on earth is the human soul on fire. - Ferdinand FochAmber Farrell knows everything about betrayal. Betrayal by the US Government, friends, coworkers. Betrayed in every way she ever thought possible – and some ways no one could have ever imagined. As a hybrid of Athanate, Werewolf and Adept, life is a complete misery. Athanates don’t trust her wolf side, wolves don’t trust her Athanate. And the Adept – well, they just want her dead.War is coming, the first shots have been fired, and without her mentor, Diana, Amber may be going rogue. So, in a desperate bid to salvage her sanity Amber and Tullah make a desperate bid to find Diana by entering the forbidden territory of New Mexico. Now, they are trapped in plots within plots as enemies are revealed as friends, friends as enemies, and death."You tread a difficult path, Amber, where every way bears death and sorrow and pain and loss"As the story continues to wind tighter and tighter, and war becomes inevitable, Amber and her kin, her friends, and even her enemies, walk the razors edge – the edge of death, sorrow, pain and loss – and the brutal fires of a world war between humans, Athenate, were, and adept.Mark has outdone himself this time. His books have continuously gotten better, but this edition is beyond amazing. If you haven’t read the series, I can’t recommend it highly enough. But this one? This one is the best I have read this year. The hard part? Now I have to wait for the next one!Sigh. Write faster, Mark!!Highly, highly recommended!

4 of 4 people found the following review helpful. Not the best of the series, but not the worst By Lost in Denver I really wanted to like this story more than I actually did. The overall pacing was really good and we met a really interesting cast of characters. Amber continues to impress with her depth as a protagonist. Unfortunately, the normal cast of secondary characters was kind of wasted in this effort. And after a really good build up to what promised to be an exciting confrontation, the author ran into the same problem that he did in the second book . . . politics broke out. Much like in "Hidden Trump," the author squashed any real sense of urgency toward the end by having a protracted political debate break out that drug on for far too long. It was like watching Die Hard for 90 minutes, and then switching over to C-SPAN. At least in "Cool Hand," our protagonist actually did have a hand in the finale whereas in "Hidden Trump," she was almost entirely a spectator at the end.I still really like the series overall. I want to see Amber's personal relationships develop (particularly with Jen, who is considerably more interesting than Amber's werewolf paramour), and it'll be interesting to see how (it at all) Amber's familial relationships are repaired. I would like for the story to at some point move beyond the endless politicking, because the politics slows everything down at inopportune moments.

"Garden design is a skill art. A water feature is not an overflowing drainpipe. A compost heap is not the latest creation by next door's cat. And a border is not a small strip of wallpaper that goes around your fencing at waist height." "To give a garden impact always but enough shrubs and flowers to enable you to plant them in groups of three, five or seven. You'll notice the impact straight away, particularly on your credit card bill." "Some gardeners complain that their clay soil is too heavy. The solution is not to pick it up in the first place."

Oriland Magic Star: Mesmerizing Action Origami, by Katrin Shumakov, Yuri Shumakov

About the Author Yuri and Katrin Shumakov - a stellar artist-duo, professional origami creators, who started their origami journey in France in 1989 and since then they unfold this art in a heretofore unseen way! They have created amazing paper world ORILAND with incredible fantasy Kingdoms that impress with rich detail of majestic castles, abundance of paper flora and busy life of little paper dwellers. Their newest kingdoms Toy-ronto and Albuquerque combine fantasy and reality together, presenting a whimsical artistic rendition of iconic sights of these cities. Another beautiful and elegant aspect of origami they brought to life is ORIBANA - a marriage of two Japanese arts: Origami and Ikebana. By combining these remarkable art-forms, in early 1990s Katrin and Yuri began to create paper flower arrangements in paper vases and thought up a distinctive name for it - Oribana. Since then they designed more than 50 charming oribana-compositions with a broad variety of origami flowers and vases. Being prolific origami authors they created more than a thousand of origami designs from simple forms and cute characters to complex dinosaurs' skeletons and architecture that all have a distinctive Oriland style. Psychologists by education, Katrin and Yuri have studied how origami helps children learn. Their Ph.D scientific work shows that by doing origami, children develop better use of both hands and that origami can improve creativity and intelligence in children ages 7 to 11. They believe that origami is "entertainment for the soul, gymnastics for the mind, and training for the hands." In 1999, Yuri and Katrin received the Silver Award in the ThinkQuest International Competition for their 'Travel to Oriland' website and it brought them and their team to Universal Studios Hollywood for the Award Ceremony! Their Oriland.com website became a winner of the Childnet Award that was given them in Paris, France. Both these projects were acknowledged as high quality creative, educational and fun websites for children and adults. Yuri and Katrin have written more than 30 origami books and instructional CDs, and their works have been exhibited in many countries including several venues in the United States, France, Spain and Canada. The Shumakovs also extend their artistic talents to the realm of photography and music. Katrin is a winner of the Toronto Photo Contest 2010. Yuri is enjoying music composing and sound design. They live in Toronto, Canada, love yoga and a healthy style of life.

3 of 3 people found the following review helpful. Fabulous - But Directions Could Be Better By Amazon Customer Took me 4 tries, but the final result is beautiful and works! Do make a larger version first. Actual origami paper works best, but you can use 20 lb copy paper (which is very hard to find in colors other than pastels). I made one star with bright colored 24 lb copy paper, but it's hard going - don't start for the first time with 24 lb paper. The photos are very good - the line drawings very confusing. Tip: After the initial folds, to do the "step folds," count the rows as 1 thru 8 from the top down, then the step folds consist of folding rows 2 and 3 under 4, and rows 6 and 7 under 5; from the right side you will then be looking at rows 1, 4, 5 & 8. To see what is meant by "cornice" folds, go to the back of the book in the assembly instructions and look at the photos (I couldn't figure anything out from the line drawings). So - 5 stars for an enchanting creation, and down to 4 stars for instructions that have some serious holes.

I haven't made one yet, but thoroughly examined the book. Kids and adults will love to get one of these as a gift. May be a bit complicated for those who are not inclined to this type of origami, but would still like to receive one. Well worth the price.

2 of 2 people found the following review helpful. The level of writing you normally only see in ALL CAPS. By Cameron Lane Imagine if someone with a 5th grade reading level watched a Sunday afternoon marathon of "Doomsday Preppers", drank a fifth of Jack Daniels, and then decided to write a 20 page book on what they had learned that day. Excerpt: "Fire is an extremely volatile substance...if you have a fireplace, that is the best location for the fire. It has a built in exhaust, which can vent smoke and fumes, and is made of brick, which cannot combust." The "author" then goes on to explain how you should start a fire in a large pot inside your house, but be careful, because "filling the house with smoke can be dangerous on the lungs". This is basically just 20 pages of general thoughts and bad advice with no actual information. Do not buy it. I recommend: How to Survive the End of the World as We Know It: Tactics, Techniques, and Technologies for Uncertain Times

Lots of good ideas to get you started with water, food, and especially security. This also applies to weather situations that we seem to have a lot anymore. Hurricanes, floods, and blizzards can all lead to a survival situation and the tips in the book could save your life or the life of a loved one.

By Elaina J Davidson The Book of Deacon - an enjoyable read, although it felt as if I read two distinctly separate books in one. Loved the dragon! The Emperor's Edge - well plotted, but it didn't really grab my attentionThe God Decrees - thoroughly enjoyable. While the portal concept is not unique, the manner in which the story uses it had me reading FAST!Defender - excellent concept with the 'adventure' guilds. Enjoyed this one as well!Draykon - Have read and reviewed Draykon elsewhere, but for the purposes of this space - definitely a winning read!Fire and Ice - could not come to grips with this, although I will say the writing is excellentLost City - well structured and yet it did not grip me enoughReversion: The Inevitable Horror - fantastic concept, and some awesome characterisation. Definitely worth a read!

6 of 6 people found the following review helpful. Well worth the read. By Elizabeth Velasquez Of the 8 novels, I loved 6, liked 1, and didn't care for one. I was introduced to the next Stephen King. I expect great things from Mr. Thorn.

13 of 16 people found the following review helpful. pc meal literature By Carol Please be advised that most of these are the first in a series that do not finish the initial storyline. If you don't mind not finishing the concept of the tale-much like you would have chapter to chapter in a normal novel-these are essentially long samples of a series. While some bring you to a closing scene with the second in the series would go in another line, lots leave you at a dramatic point where you are forced to purchase the next to finish the story line.

6 of 6 people found the following review helpful. Adventures on the Amazon By P. Webster This is an enjoyable account of the travels of a nineteenth century naturalist in the Amazon. It is a book in the same vein as Darwin's "Voyage of the Beagle" and Humboldt's "Personal Narrative", and it paints a vivid picture of the wildlife and the people of the Amazon region. Bates sometimes shows the patronising prejudice of a "civilised" European towards the native peoples, but at other times he shows that he can be reasonably tolerant in his attitudes.Bates describes his years in the Amazon as "eleven of the best years of my life". But the book also shows that they were years in which he faced dangers, disease and hardship. Bates travelled out to South America in 1848 with Alfred Russel Wallace, and the dangers of such expeditions are shown by the fact that Wallace's younger brother died of yellow fever in South America and by the fact that, while he was returning to England, Wallace's ship sank and he lost most of the specimens he had collected, with Wallace and the crew being rescued after spending ten days in an open boat.Bates is also linked to Wallace, and to Darwin, in relation to the theory of evolution by natural selection. In 1858, while in the Far East, Wallace came up with the idea of natural selection independently of Darwin (although Darwin had first developed the idea in 1838). And Bates returned to England in 1859, the year that Darwin's "On the Origin of Species" was published. When Bates read Darwin's book he was immediately convinced by it and he realised that something he had seen himself was a perfect example of natural selection. Bates had seen that some species of butterflies mimicked others in their appearance. The ones that were being mimicked avoided being eaten by being foul-smelling or noxious to predators. Although the mimics were not themselves foul or noxious, they avoided predation by evolving through natural selection to look like the foul-smelling species.Darwin praised the paper that Bates published on what later came to be known as "Batesian mimicry", and he encouraged Bates to publish "The Naturalist on the River Amazons", which Darwin described as "the best work of Natural History Travels ever published in England."Bates's conversion to Darwinism is evident in this book, which was first published in 1863. On page 65, for example, he writes of "the slow adaptation of the Fauna to a forest-clad country throughout an immense lapse of geological time." On page 407 he says that "nature appears not to invent organs at once for the functions to which they are now adapted, but avails herself, here of one already-existing structure or instinct, there of another, according as they are handy when need for their further modification arises." And on page 413, with reference to the wings of butterflies, he writes that "on these expanded membranes Nature writes, as on a tablet, the story of the modifications of species..."I should finally mention that this edition of the book is a facsimile of the 1864 edition, and it includes some interesting illustrations, including one of an "adventure with alligator"! I recommend it.Phil Webster (England)

While on a trip to Switzerland, Frederick Winterbourne is introduced to a young, beautiful American named Daisy Miller. Although Daisy has a reputation for being frivolous and flirtatious, Winterbourne is intrigued by her, so when the two meet again in Rome, he takes an interest in the rumours about her behaviour and, against wiser counsel, becomes involved once again with her. Despite being criticized for how Daisy’s character portrayed American values at the time, Daisy Miller was an immediate success and remains one of Henry James’ most popular works. In 1909, James adapted the story into a dramatic work of the same name with an alternate conclusion.

Review “The critical faculty hesitates before the magnitude of Mr. Henry James’s work.”—Joseph Conrad

From the Inside Flap Originally published in "The Cornhill Magazine in 1878 and in book form in 1879, "Daisy Miller brought Henry James his first widespread commercial and critical success. The young Daisy Miller, an American on holiday with her mother on the shores of Switzerland's Lac Leman, is one of James's most vivid and tragic characters. Daisy's friendship with an American gentleman, Mr. Winterbourne, and her subsequent infatuation with a passionate but impoverished Italian bring to life the great Jamesian themes of Americans abroad, innocence versus experience, and the grip of fate. As Elizabeth Hardwick writes in her Introduction, Daisy Miller "lives on, a figure out of literature who has entered history as a name, a vision."

By Mary Whipple One of Henry James's earliest novellas, Daisy Miller (1878) follows the activities of a wealthy, and brashly confident, young American woman as she audaciously challenges European society in Vevey, Switzerland, and in Rome, having fun, doing what pleases her, and leaving staid European society gasping in her wake. Daisy Miller, whose father is in the US and whose mother is her ineffectual "chaperone," is a free spirit in a society bound by unstated but rigid "rules," determined to do whatever she wants, whenever she wants, with whomever she chooses.Frederick Winterbourne, an expatriate who has spent most of his life in Geneva, is attracted to Daisy, but his bonds with his stuffy aunt, Mrs. Cosgrove, and her friend, Mrs. Walker, both of whom govern ex-patriot society in Europe, leave him ill-equipped to deal with Daisy's flouting of society's conventions. When she is obviously attracted to Mr. Giovanelli, a singer/musician of no social standing, and when she is seen with him publicly in places that a "nice" girl would not grace at night, her reputation is threatened, and anyone associated with her is tainted. Winterbourne is uncertain how to protect her, while, not incidentally, protecting his own reputation.Developing his most famous theme, James considers the conflicts between American and European values and the naivete of the Americans and their spontaneity as it contrasts with the old world formality of the Europeans. Daisy, who is often foolishly naïve, is also seen as brash and ego-centric, a young woman whose destiny cannot be avoided (or even predicted) because of the strength of her own, often wrong, willfulness.James focuses on two characters here--both Daisy and Winterbourne--and though the story is told from Winterbourne's point of view, Daisy is often the more vibrant of the two characters. Though she is shallow and assertive, he is hidebound by convention, leaving both characters with limits in terms of reader identification. When a night-time dalliance leads to serious consequences for Daisy, the reader is neither surprised nor shocked.Filled with trenchant observations about Americans and their differences from Europeans, the novel incorporates significant symbols--the Coliseum (associated with innocent Christian martyrs), malaria (to which Americans are particularly susceptible), Randolph (Daisy's rude and undisciplined 10-year-old brother, the ugliest of Americans), and Mrs. Cosgrove and Mrs. Walker (converts to the European way of life). Carefully observed and critical of American naivete, Daisy Miller is the "preface" to Portrait of a Lady and many of James's more fully developed novels. n Mary Whipple

I enjoyed this novella because you so infrequently see a lead female character of that era portrayed in quite such an unflattering light. While the plot is simple there are a few twists and turns. This is an interesting, fun read.

Novella about manners and customs By Eugenia This short novella is a brief story about a young american woman who travels Europe with her mother and young brother. Thru a chance she meets young British gentleman Winterbourne who is smitten by her beauty, but also amazed by her innocence and lack of restraint. Daisy comes from a rich family and from a world where she is permitted to be herself no matter what the price of her individuality may be. But she is also eager to make company in a new world and gain access to society. She craves entertainment, attention and stimulating company. What she is not realizing is the fact she is going about it the wrong way. Story is set in Europe, small town Vivey in Switzerland and Rome, Italy. As Daisy's young life unfold and ends tragically, one cannot but think that in either case there was no happy ending here. Her behaviour and galant carelessness were ticket to doom. Definitely fine story about class difference, cultural difference and tale that money cannot buy everything. One has to find subtle ways to get what she wants out of life.
