Essential Reading By Lilly Provocateur I think this book should go into the Essential category on any horse persons reading list if they are at all interested in Dressage. Baucher is considered one of the fathers of dressage. This book is a simple and quick read. While vague on certain points I wonder if it is more a matter of having been lost in translation, than truly poor writing. Baucher is still considered one of the top masters of classical dressage, and he certainly conveys confidence and ease in his book on the handling and training of the horses.

Reid I lost my hardback copy of this book in a cross-country relocation some years ago, so I was glad to see it in print again. However, the copy I got from this Amazon page (ISBN 978-1-84664-134-3) is missing some of the illustrations -- notably all the illustrations between page 29 and page 79. Put another way, Plate IV is in this volume, but Plate V, Plate VI, Plate VII etc. are not. If you're horsing around, by all means read Baucher, but don't buy this edition of Baucher's book.

I wish that my riding teachers had instructed me with some of the methods Baucher used. If this had happened, I think my riding and training would have been much better earlier. Baucher is very common sense and, although, it is not the easiest of reads, I would say it is a fantastic book that any dressage rider or trainer should endeavour to read.
