2 of 2 people found the following review helpful. Entertaining By Mike Reeves-McMillan Tanya Huff is kind of hit and miss for me. I like some of her work, but not all of it. This one I found entertaining, though not highly entertaining; it's a low 4 stars.There are a number of small typos and editing errors, the most amusing of which was the unintended antisemitism of one wizard, who had an expression of "gentile superiority". It's not terribly edited, but it needs another pass.What I did enjoy was that, as the author comments in her introduction, she has pulled off an overpowered protagonist by making the character's greatest weakness be herself. I'm not usually a fan of deeply flawed protagonists, but because this one had to be in order to work (and because the flaw wasn't especially harmful to anyone), it was OK.

This is a group of short stories written by Tanya Huff over a number of years. The first time I read them they were published in chronological order, beginning with the most powerful wizard in the world (also the laziest) coming into her powers. Being lazy, very sensuousI and very very clever she enjoys herself very much, without having to actually do much magic. The magic she does do is fascinating though. In the last story in this group she faces the fact that in spite of her great power, she can not save every situation and convince everyone that life is as enjoyable as she knows it to be. This book organizes these stories in the order in which they were published, and gives directions to which story comes next in the time line. For example the third story published tells us how in her teens, when her teacher tries to steal her power, she possesses so much power that he explodes into fine dust because he cannot hold it all. I did mention she is lazy, and instead of being thrilled to be the most powerful wizard in the world, she is somewhat irritated that she has to catch a demon let loose during the fight, not to mention having to clear away the mess that used to be her mentor. She will still have to explain to the king that she blew up his courtmage. I will not try to describe the first story published because like all the rest of the stories, it is so much fun and tightly written that a plot summary would take away from the enjoyment of the work. This says a good bit about Tanya Huff's, talent because according to the front of the book, this is one of the first stories she ever published ever.Over the years I loaned my first copy of the stories and so often that I finally lost track of it. I am thrilled that they are in print again. I love them no matter which order they are presented.

I love these stories of Magdalene By Sheila Ary The most powerful wizard in the world, Magdalene, is an entertaining character, always preferring to stay at home rather than go out into the world when she is called on to deal with some magical problem. How she deals with problems when she has to is often entertaining and surprising. You get to like her more as you go through these five stories. The author points out that you can read the tales in the order that they were written, which is the order that they are presented in the book, or in the order that they proceed through Magdalene's life. Either way Magdalene is going to hold your attention because the tales are so much fun. I love Tanya Huff's books, and these stories are no exception.

I've read the first 2 books already but did not mind reading them again as they are very good. Some of the stories are probably going to be finished in another book or several depending on what the author wants to do. I really don't like when this is done and usual do not buy the follow up book(s) but I am willing to purchase all the second books as that is how much I liked all the books in this grouping. Each author has their own reading style which makes this an even better deal. I highly recommend this book and hope that everyone that reads it loves it as much asI do.

I had read two or three of stories before, but still enjoyed reading them again. These hot and sexy romance books were written by some of my favorite authors. All of the stories featured hot alpha step siblings. My only complaint is that some of the best were cliffhangers. It irks me when I have put my time and energy, or money into the stories to just stop cold. Thanks for writing these romance books.

By Jen Wood As a mother and wife I really enjoyed this book because it is always wise to be prepared for if disaster strikes! This book was a full on guide to survival during these times , from storing water which is essential to food storage and preparation to the tools needed which one would have never thought about. The first chapters go over the basics of crocheting and the history, while the rest goes very in-depth on projects step-by-step. There's some things on there I've never attempted before, but you'll find a whole new depth to crocheting and knitting after reading this book. Definitely a must-read if that's what interests you and if not, you'll still learn a lot about a new hobby you never knew existed.

I can’t believe that I have a knack to weave so many unique things. It was always my favorite hobby to do crocheting and knitting but I don’t have good guide line to do so. I have seen so many books but all of them are not worthy. After getting this book I realized that this book is the one that really make my dream come true. This mesmerizing book of crocheting and knitting projects is so easy that pictures are given with all the step by step instructions. I love this book because now I have the opportunity to crochet eh flowers, dollies, head bands and dishcloths. I must say this is a great book for the beginners like me and the instructions are very easy to understand. After reading this book I think I can make my own Crochet bags and scarves.

I was able to have a much better guided direction for what I was doing By King Cola A simple hobby is now much more enjoyable thanks tot he help and advice in this book from Edith Heartwell. I tok up crocheting a few months ago, but was frustrated because I kept making the same mistakes over and over. After reading this easy-to-follow book on ideas and projects, I was able to have a much better guided direction for what I was doing. That alone made me much better at this hobby, and I look forward to getting even better! Much thanks for taking the time to share your secrets with the rest of us!

Little I may be a biased reviewer because I actually know Jake and am a board member and volunteer for the Fort Collins Cat Rescue & Spay/Neuter Clinic, but here's my review anyway: I LOVED reading this book! It is a quick read and I read it in one afternoon. It moved me to tears more than a few times, but almost all of the tears were happy tears. I especially loved the chapters where Jake was telling his own story. Pam does a great job of giving Jake a "voice". I am so happy that she is telling Jake's story because it has a very powerful message and that is that EVERY pet is an individual and has something to give the world. He just needs to be given the chance to discover that gift that he will share!

We have a "Milo" or two in our lives and are heartbroken when they are sick or lost. Sharon Waters' journey while Milo is missing leads to greater self-discovery and awareness as she struggles with the decision to go on her trip. For someone who had surrounded herself with animals and family, and one-by-one had to let them go, Milo's disappearance took on particular significance. Ms. Waters' gives us a window into her thoughts as she makes this journey and tries to act "normally" while grieving Milo's absence. This is a thoughtful, absorbing true story that made my heart ache for the writer.

12 of 13 people found the following review helpful. A Proofreader, PLEASE By J. W. Scales This is at least a 4 star book that only gets 3 stars because it bypassed the proofreader. The story itself is interesting, based on hidden passages and rooms beneath the Sphinx. The characters, both good and bad, are believable. The good guys, and gals, are quite heroic, and the bad guys, with their "different" philosophy are quite dastardly. However, typos and misused words start at the very beginning, and seriously detract from the continuity of the story. There are rooms that are fifteen foot by fifteen feet, a one hundred eighty five feet battering ram, and, something new, the SEVERN Wonders of the Ancient World. Other typos--'of' instead of 'off', for example--are sprinkled throughout the book. Also, using rattlesnakes to dissuade intruders in Iraq is problematical. Rattlers are indigenous to the western hemisphere.

Moyer The plot line was good and I was enjoying it until I started noticing the typos and grammatical errors. There must be 1,000 more commas than needed, for example. He switches between metric and US (would Spire's English ID list his weight in pounds and height in inches?) Then we go from kilometers to miles.Go one way or another please! Get an editor who is more picky!Rosser tells a good story. I enjoyed it. but I have to give it a less than great review score...

Rich storyline with imaginative plotlines and believably human characters By Mel Wonderful story that is adventuresome enough that you enjoy the escapism during reading, however the plot and characters are realistic enough that it could almost happen. I thoroughly enjoyed it!! Looking forward to many more adventures!

230 of 235 people found the following review helpful. A fantastic COMPANION to the Outlandish series By A Customer I absolutely loved The Outlandish Companion. I think it deserves one star for the Gaelic pronunciations and explanations, a second star for the sketches and pictures (loved seeing Claire's rings!), a third star for the character list, a fourth star for Diana taking the time to answer all of those questions from everyone, and the fifth star for her explanation of where characters come from. I would give her a sixth star for her wit and humor if Amazon gave me that option. I was a little surprised to see how closely the horoscopes matched Jamie and Claire's personalities. Diana didn't write the horoscopes anyway, they were sent to her and she liked them so she included them for anyone who was interested. Who cares that they are fictional characters? Not me. The fact that Diana has made Jamie, Claire & Co. 'real' to so many people is an amazing accomplishment itself. I enjoyed the Companion for the reasons I listed above. Will I read the book cover to cover repeatedly? No. Will I go through it fairly often? Yes. Why? Because it's interesting information and I participate in Outlandish Trivia Games and I could use all the help I can get. My book was worth every penny I spent on it and I hope to someday have it signed along with the rest of my books. Great job Diana and I look forward to books 5 & 6 as well as the next Companion!

I devoured it.Normally, I'd rather be strung up and dunked head first into a vat of cold parritch than be forced to read "romance" novels, but Ms. Gabaldon's books went straight to my Celtic heart. I bought used copies in paperback to share with friends and hard cover editions for my library--that's a wee bit of change, but well worth it.Before ordering the Companion, I spent time flipping through a copy at the bookstore--and that might be a good idea if some of you aren't sure you want to spend the money on this--personally, I was laughing out loud and one lady even asked me "Is it good? What are you reading?" Grinning, I stuck a copy of Outlander in her hands...and yep, she bought it.I keep running into Outlandish people everywhere, and it's great. Diana--thank you so much for the many, many hours spent in the pleasurable company of the Fraser clan.Okay, put up your swords and stop hagglin' over the book. Check it out first and buy it or not. Mine is on order right now....(PS: I KNEW she had to be a Doctor Who fan! I mean "Fraser Hines/Jamie McCrimmon"? Had to be!)

Fascinating reference By Mrs. K I borrowed this book to read while awaiting the sixth book in the Outlander series (a day without Jamie and Claire is like a day without sunshine!)The Outlandish Companion gives synopses of the first four books in the series, and does so quite well. Had I known of the existence of this book, I'd have likely skipped over a good deal of Dragonfly in Amber, settling for the synopsis to get to the meaty Voyager. (Sorry, Dragonfly fans...everyone's entitled to their preferences...)Diana Gabaldon explains many things here (including the pronunciation of her own last name, which I'd been mangling). I was particularly impressed with her willingness to outline her writing methodology, admit her copy errors (people actually picked on her because her cherry trees were out of season, LOL), and go to great lengths to create an understandable translation of her Gaelic, French, and European English references. She also very neatly addresses some of the most controversial portions of the Outlander series without apology.Since some of her characters disappear only to recur two or three books later, Gabaldon gives us a comprehensive character listing, up to and including Leroi.There is some "Work In Progress" material too, which is spoiler-ish to those who haven't yet read The Fiery Cross.If you love this series and plan to own it in hardcover, by all means buy the Companion. You'll do fine without it, but it's still an enjoyable read.

About the Author

Heidi Howcroft is an English educated landscape architect, who has worked and published extensively in Germany. She is the author of over 20 garden books and has a wide knowledge of contemporary and historical landscapes. When she is not writing, leading garden tours or searching for new gardens, she enjoys tending her cottage garden in a small village in Somerset, England.

Adam Caplin is a freelance garden designer. After studying horticulture at Reading, he was awarded a fellowship to set up the Camden Garden Centre in north London.In 1985 he founded The Garden Centre at Alexandra Palace, which expanded to two other sites. He went on to run The Chelsea Gardener and two nurseries in Essex and Suffolk. He now has an interest in a wholesale nursery in East Anglia. Adam and his brother, James, wrote Instant Gardening and Urban Eden. Adam has been a contributor to Garden Inspirations and Gardens Illustrated, and a guest presenter for the TV series Gardener's World. He is the author of Planted Junk and New Kitchen Garden. Adam is also a successful fine artist and has had a series of one-man shows.

Lovely book with misleading title By Beth in Iowa “First Ladies of Gardening” by Heidi Howcroft is a collection of fourteen short garden portraits and biographies of the women who made those gardens. The writing covers enough detail of the history and development of the gardens, together with broad sketches of the lives of the women, to provide fairly satisfying portraits, despite the limited space available in a 170-page book.The garden photos by Marianne Majerus are lovely, showing the peak moments of glorious flowering in the best parts of these world-class gardens, and the photos include enough big-picture shots to show the layout of the garden areas, not just pretty flower close-ups that communicate little to those interested in garden design.However, the title of this book is poorly chosen; it leads readers to believe that this is a book about noted women gardeners – while the book actually focuses on descriptions and photographs of gardens that the author admires that also happen to have been created and owned by women.This sounds like an unimportant difference, but in fact, it leads to puzzlement on the part of the reader about the choice of gardeners and gardens covered: Part One of the book starts out as one would expect from the title: by portraying seven gardens and women gardener-owners who are established 20th-century legends: Gertrude Jekyll, Vita Sackville-West, Beatrix Havergill, Margery Fish, Rosemary Verey, Beth Chatto and Mary Keen. But also included, inexplicably, are the three less well-known generations who created Kiftsgate Court Gardens: Heather Muir, Diany Binny and Anne Chambers.Part Two then veers away from well-known women gardeners by including six more recent, less famous gardeners and their gardens. However, I would argue that Helen Dillon and Xa Tollemache, both in this section, are nearly as well-known gardeners as Mary Keen and Beth Chatto (and certainly more recognized than the Muir/Binny/Chambers trio).And the four amateur gardeners included in Part Two, while certainly having created admirable gardens, are not at all in the same league as the other gardeners. Less well-known amateur women gardeners could certainly merit an entire book, instead of merely being tacked onto a book of notable British gardening women.This would allow more coverage of each of the well-known women gardeners in this book that purports to be about the “First Ladies” of gardening, or for more women and gardens to be included. Arabella Lennox-Boyd’s garden at Gresgarth comes to mind.And a book about leading historic British women gardeners should surely include Ellen Wilmott, among the most interesting early 20th century women gardeners; however, her garden at Warley Place has not survived and therefore cannot be gloriously photographed today. Equally, Penelope Hobhouse is among the best-known women gardeners in Britain, yet she is not the gardener-owner of a famous garden of her own design.Perhaps I’m just being overly picky; after all, the photos and gardens in this book are gorgeously beautiful and I greatly enjoyed learning more about some of the most glorious gardens in Britain. The writing was interesting and the research seems to be of a high caliber (although I did notice that the author referred to noted 20th century American landscape architect Beatrix Ferrand as “Beatrix Farrell” in the first chapter). I do look forward to reading more by Howcroft and seeing Majerus’ future photos of glorious British gardens – and I hope their next books’ titles will be chosen more thoughtfully.(Note: I was provided a copy of this book for review purposes by Frances Lincoln publishers.)

I loved the personal stories of these women of different times and circumstances who shared a love of plants. All of their gardens are inspirational to others while reflecting their individual tastes and quirks.

About the Author Edward John Moreton Drax Plunkett, 18th Baron of Dunsany (24 July 1878 – 25 October 1957) was an Irish writer and dramatist, notable for his work, mostly in fantasy, published under the name Lord Dunsany. More than eighty books of his work were published, and his oeuvre includes many hundreds of published short stories, as well as successful plays, novels and essays.

Roby Herein the reader is introduced to MANA-YOOD-SUSHAI, who created all the lesser gods to play amongst the worlds. There is Kib, creator of all life, and Mung, who takes it away with but a signing of his hands. Meet Sish, the lord and master of Time, and Skarl the Drummer, whose beating can be heard throughout the heavens. Slid is also here, who frolics within the currents of countless rivers and rides the foam atop the waves of all the seas. There are also stories of the lesser home gods to be found, as well as the priests and prophets of Pegana.Naturally, this isn't a book that presents a story with a beginning, middle, or end. It is really just snippets of history and gods of the land. You can't really read it one chapter at a time, it has to be read all the way through for the reader to get a complete sense of its grandeur. It stretches from the very beginning of time to its end and then back again. After you're done, you don't remember much of the details of the individual stories, but the sense of wonder remains.This is the first installment of a five book cycle (followed by Time and the Gods, The Sword of Welleran, A Dreamer's Tale, and The Book of Wonder) concerning the fictional world of Pegana. Even though these stories were written nearly a century ago, they have had a great influence upon such well known writers as H.P. Lovecraft, J.R.R. Tolkien, and Neil Gaiman, as well as countless others. Dunsany's tales also rank up there with William Morris' and George MacDonald's for creating one of the first self-contained fantasy worlds and an accompanying imaginary mythology. (Although I've always hated the term "imaginary mythology." Aren't all mythologies imaginary to one degree or another? - not that that detracts from their power or legitimacy.)Wildside Press has done a great service by reprinting most of the books in this series. I do wish, however, that a collected edition would be made available complete with annotations. (Not even Chaosium's "The Complete Pegana" reprints all the stories involved in the cycle.) As it stands now, readers will have to make do with these incredibly short individual volumes. This book, for instance, has 32 chapters, but is only 106 pages long. And that is using very large type and with a few pictures thrown in!Nevertheless, it has often been said that some of the best things in life come in small packages. In this case, it is most definitely true.

Brilliant, foundational work of fantasy By TS This was Lord Dunsany's first published novel; it was also, I believe, the first completely invented mythology in the English language, pre-dating even Tolkien's Silmarillion by about a decade. Dunsany's influence on later fantasy has been incalculable, and this is the place to start.The style is very elevated and high biblical / "mythic", -- far closer to Kahlil Gibran than modern fantasy -- and the intent more literary. High Art fantasy, not low art. The stories are very short, but very powerful and somewhat haunting. The best way to explain the book may simply be to give a sample, as Dunsany's style (though oft imitated) is so unique.----"And Limpang-Tung said: "The ways of the gods are strange. The flower groweth up and the flower fadeth away. This may be very clever of the gods. Man groweth from his infancy, and in a while he dieth. This may be very clever too."But the gods play with a strange scheme."I will send jests into the world and a little mirth. And while Death seems to thee as far away as the purple rim of hills; or sorrow as far off as rain in the blue days of summer, then pray to Limpang-Tung. But when thou growest old, or ere thou diest, pray not to Limpang-Tung, for thou becomest part of a scheme that he doth not understand."Go out into the starry night, and Limpang-Tung will dance with thee who danced since the gods were young, the god of mirth and of melodious minstrels. Or offer up a jest to Limpang-Tung; only pray not in thy sorrow to Limpang-Tung, for he saith of sorrow: 'It may be very clever of the gods, but he doth not understand.'"-------If you're interested in fantasy, you should read this, especially since it's free; Dunsany's influenced everyone from Lovecraft and Howard to Gaiman and Zelazny, and if you want to be familiar with the fantasy genre, he should be part of your bookshelf. Lovecraft's work. Old gods and doomed mortals let you flick the pages at a frantic pace to learn what happens next. The book itself was in a desirable state. Not like new but like it had been well cared for in it's aged past.

Winter Well after giving a lot of Dorothy Wilks books to my mother on knitting I have now given this one to my sister as she wants to learn how to knit.As with Dorothy's other books this one is very good, with easy instructions that won't overwhelm you.Just nice and straight forward and great tips and tricks on how to learn how to knit the easiest way possible.
