About the Author
Heidi Howcroft is an English educated landscape architect, who has worked and published extensively in Germany. She is the author of over 20 garden books and has a wide knowledge of contemporary and historical landscapes. When she is not writing, leading garden tours or searching for new gardens, she enjoys tending her cottage garden in a small village in Somerset, England.
Adam Caplin is a freelance garden designer. After studying horticulture at Reading, he was awarded a fellowship to set up the Camden Garden Centre in north London.In 1985 he founded The Garden Centre at Alexandra Palace, which expanded to two other sites. He went on to run The Chelsea Gardener and two nurseries in Essex and Suffolk. He now has an interest in a wholesale nursery in East Anglia. Adam and his brother, James, wrote Instant Gardening and Urban Eden. Adam has been a contributor to Garden Inspirations and Gardens Illustrated, and a guest presenter for the TV series Gardener's World. He is the author of Planted Junk and New Kitchen Garden. Adam is also a successful fine artist and has had a series of one-man shows.

Lovely book with misleading title By Beth in Iowa “First Ladies of Gardening” by Heidi Howcroft is a collection of fourteen short garden portraits and biographies of the women who made those gardens. The writing covers enough detail of the history and development of the gardens, together with broad sketches of the lives of the women, to provide fairly satisfying portraits, despite the limited space available in a 170-page book.The garden photos by Marianne Majerus are lovely, showing the peak moments of glorious flowering in the best parts of these world-class gardens, and the photos include enough big-picture shots to show the layout of the garden areas, not just pretty flower close-ups that communicate little to those interested in garden design.However, the title of this book is poorly chosen; it leads readers to believe that this is a book about noted women gardeners – while the book actually focuses on descriptions and photographs of gardens that the author admires that also happen to have been created and owned by women.This sounds like an unimportant difference, but in fact, it leads to puzzlement on the part of the reader about the choice of gardeners and gardens covered: Part One of the book starts out as one would expect from the title: by portraying seven gardens and women gardener-owners who are established 20th-century legends: Gertrude Jekyll, Vita Sackville-West, Beatrix Havergill, Margery Fish, Rosemary Verey, Beth Chatto and Mary Keen. But also included, inexplicably, are the three less well-known generations who created Kiftsgate Court Gardens: Heather Muir, Diany Binny and Anne Chambers.Part Two then veers away from well-known women gardeners by including six more recent, less famous gardeners and their gardens. However, I would argue that Helen Dillon and Xa Tollemache, both in this section, are nearly as well-known gardeners as Mary Keen and Beth Chatto (and certainly more recognized than the Muir/Binny/Chambers trio).And the four amateur gardeners included in Part Two, while certainly having created admirable gardens, are not at all in the same league as the other gardeners. Less well-known amateur women gardeners could certainly merit an entire book, instead of merely being tacked onto a book of notable British gardening women.This would allow more coverage of each of the well-known women gardeners in this book that purports to be about the “First Ladies” of gardening, or for more women and gardens to be included. Arabella Lennox-Boyd’s garden at Gresgarth comes to mind.And a book about leading historic British women gardeners should surely include Ellen Wilmott, among the most interesting early 20th century women gardeners; however, her garden at Warley Place has not survived and therefore cannot be gloriously photographed today. Equally, Penelope Hobhouse is among the best-known women gardeners in Britain, yet she is not the gardener-owner of a famous garden of her own design.Perhaps I’m just being overly picky; after all, the photos and gardens in this book are gorgeously beautiful and I greatly enjoyed learning more about some of the most glorious gardens in Britain. The writing was interesting and the research seems to be of a high caliber (although I did notice that the author referred to noted 20th century American landscape architect Beatrix Ferrand as “Beatrix Farrell” in the first chapter). I do look forward to reading more by Howcroft and seeing Majerus’ future photos of glorious British gardens – and I hope their next books’ titles will be chosen more thoughtfully.(Note: I was provided a copy of this book for review purposes by Frances Lincoln publishers.)

I loved the personal stories of these women of different times and circumstances who shared a love of plants. All of their gardens are inspirational to others while reflecting their individual tastes and quirks.
