By Debi Alexander I got this "book" because the description stated that it had beginning and more advanced crochet stitches. It doesn't. It not only doesn't, it does not show even the basic stitches. I'll put it this way. I got it for free, and I feel I overpaid.

4 of 5 people found the following review helpful. Not a Great Starting Point By S. Joseph This is a fully text style book. There are no pictures, no typical-style patterns, and no abbreviation use or explanations. This is not a very good starting point to learn how to crochet.

Crochet stitching is always been one of the favorite activities of mine By BlueBird Crochet stitching is always been one of the favorite activities of mine. Heather Aniston wrote a great book so I can easily learn the complicated stitches step by step. The most attention-grabbing part of the book are the pictures showing what the words describe and no need to struggle with complicated patterns and designs. It helps me a lot for choosing and buying the material I need and with the help of this book I made many things. It provides me the basic knowledge so that I can make a hat and scarf. This book is great and helpful for the mothers who can make sweaters, small warm blankets for their new born baby. It has lot of information in this book and is a very good starting point how to crochet. So don’t stays free at home read this book and try different crochet stitches and make your own crochet collection.

Book one of the Standing Room Only Stables series Lynn Welling grew up with a love of horses. As a child, her days consisted of sitting on her bedroom floor with shoelaces tied around her toes acting as reins. For hours she would pretend she was riding a Park horse at U.S. Nationals, trotting the victory lap with a blanket of roses draped on his neck. Now, as a young adult, that dream is one step closer to becoming a reality. When Lynn lands a job as a stable hand at an Arabian horse farm, she starts to wonder if she got in over her head. The only riding she has ever done was on the neighbor’s retired Quarter horse as a kid, and it was just the basics. Now, she is in charge of caring for over 20 horses, and she’s beginning to second guess her decision. Just as she’s learning the ropes, Lynn catches the eye of Doug, the head trainer, and he starts to wonder if she is the junior rider he’s been looking for. He introduces her to a tiny bay gelding, named Rumble, and Lynn has to decide if she wants to take on the daunting challenge of learning to ride him. While sorting things out, and forming a relationship with Rumble, things aren’t exactly falling into place. The resident star rider, Zoey, is quick to crush any plans that Lynn may have; shoving her, and her dreams, out the door before she gets too comfortable. Will Lynn find the strength and determination to ride Rumble in the ring this season? Or, will she leave her dreams behind, crushed into the arena dirt by pounding hooves? Take time to check out C. L. Heckman's other books on her amazon author page. Also, watch for future books in the series and follow Lynn, and all the other characters, on their journeys at SROS stables.

Park Trot (Standing Room Only Stables) (Volume 1), by C. L. Heckman

About the Author C. L. Heckman, a small-town writer from Pennsylvania, grew up with a love of words. At the age of eight, she wrote her first song lyrics, and put them to a piano melody she had created. At the age of eleven, she began to write poetry, and entered her poems in many competitions around the U.S. Drifting from writing, she spent nearly twenty years riding and showing Arabian horses, and has multiple Regional Championship titles to her name. However, unable to leave the dream of writing behind, she continued to write any chance she got in the hopes of one day accomplishing her dream. When a high school history teacher advised her to be a writer, she ignored him, assuming that it was a far-fetched goal. However, almost a decade later, she finally took his advice and has now self-published her first novel, Charlie's Pond. Heckman, a stay-at-home mom to her beautiful daughter, is currently working on her next novel, as well as a few short stories. She states that when she is old and gray, she will tell her grandchildren about her biggest accomplishments, knowing now, that her books will be one of them. Feel free to check out her newest books, George: A Josephine Meyers Mystery, and, Park Trot, both available in the kindle store. 8 of 9 people found the following review helpful. Heaven for horse lovers. By Maria A lovely, easy to read YA novel about a teenager overcoming her fears to realise her dreams. Of special appeal to horse-lovers but it has universal appeal for anyone who dreams of success in their chosen hobby.Lynn is nervous when she starts work as a stable girl in a small yard concentrating on show horses. She never believed she'd end up riding one of the horses in a national competition in her wildest dreams. The route to show day is littered with accidents, injuries, jealous rivalries and boys. She makes firm friends and learns the value of support but will nerves ruin the big day?Books like this one, fuelled my interest in reading in my youth. This one is particularly well-written with rounded characters. I've previously owned an anglo-arab horse so I was fascinated by the different way things are done in the States.Recommend.

7 of 8 people found the following review helpful. A horse, a girl, and a quest for the roses By Convoke If you love horses and horse showing, you'll adore "Park Trot" by C. L. Heckman, a book for young adults and lifelong horse lovers alike. A show rider herself, Heckman takes you inside the often tempestuous world of horse training and horse shows. And you don't even need a custom-made suit to get into the showring. As a lifelong horse owner and breeder of many years experience, I found this book incisive and much in the mode of the classic "National Velvet," as it focuses on the riders, trainers, and horse people -- all trying to capture their dreams by riding in competition and capturing a title.Horses teach people many things, one of most important of which is that you can't lie or cry your way out of a problem with a horse. Horsemen and horsewomen develop clarity and determination as they learn this lesson. Yet, people are people, and Heckman has done an exemplary job of bringing you into the world of people who compete with horses as their partners."Park Trot," Book One in the "Standing Room Only Stables" series introduces Lynn Welling, who as a child dreamed of riding a high-stepping "Park Horse" at U.S. Nationals, trotting the victory lap with a blanket of roses in her lap and a fine horse under her Lynn takes a job as a stable hand at an Arabian horse farm and soon finds herself challenged again and again. She has little experience with show horses or showing, but now she is responsible for the well-being of 20 delicate horses, and she's beginning to second guess her decision.Lynn soon comes to the attention of the head trainer, Doug, who is hunting for a "junior" rider. Enter Rumble, a small bay gelding. Doug offers to teach her to ride this hot little show horse.Lynn soon finds out that problems with horses can be overshadowed by problems with competitive horse people, and makes an enemy of star rider, Zoey, who does Lynn as much harm as she can. Will Lynn ride Rumble in the ring this season? Can she make it to the show arena? And if she does, can she and Rumble triumph?Recommended for anyone with children who dream of showing horses, or people considering horse competition, or even those who once had such dreams as Lynn's.I eagerly await more books in Watkins' series: she's off to a high-riding start.

7 of 8 people found the following review helpful. Loved it! By Big Bunny Let me say at the outset that I am not a "horse person" nor do I know anything about the world of show horses. So, why, you might ask, did I purchase this book? I did it quite simply because of the author. Some time back, on a whim, I picked up C. L. Heckman's debut novel, "Charlie's Pond" and once I started reading could not put it down until the final "The End". So, I wanted to see what she was up to here with "Park Trot". I was not disappointed. From the first page, I was hooked. Heckman writes with such clarity it was easy to become wrapped up in this wonderful coming-of-age tale. The lead character, Lynn, is a young woman who loves horses but lacks the confidence needed to believe that she could ever succeed in the show ring. Through Heckman's masterful prose, the reader gets to join this young woman on her journey to discover the courage and maturity that lie deep within her.I thoroughly enjoyed this book and recommend it most highly to teens, young adults, and adults alike. It is a wonderful read!

The war has claimed thousands of lives, and it will claim thousands more unless Neeko can stop it. Of his own volition, he plans to travel through hostile territory, to the well-fortified capital of the South to find and slay the Southern king. If this wasn’t difficult enough, the Northern army—headed in the same direction—has orders to kill Neeko on sight. But there are three people still on his side. Unfortunately, their assistance comes with a whole new set of challenges. There’s a psychic accused of murder who recently escaped custody, a chemist from a foreign land who cares little about the war and only seeks revenge for his fallen ally, and a mage whose guilt over recent events has her acting without prudence or patience. It isn’t long before it becomes clear to all of them that trusting each other could prove more difficult than assassinating the king.

Pyforial Games (Pyforial Mage Trilogy Book 3), by B.T. Narro

About the Author B T (Brian Thoele) Narro was born in 1985, in San Francisco, California, where he still lives. He loves intricate stories with surprises, humor, romance, but above all, deeply developed characters and worlds that are so real they seem to live on once the novel is finished. This is what he strives for as a writer. Brian's passion for fantasy started in middle school. He had a lot of inspiring teachers, one of which was his sixth grade English teacher, Rick Riordan (long before he was famous), who loved to enthrall his students by masterfully telling Greek myths from memory. By sophomore year in college, Brian had finished his first full-length novel. Although immensely proud of it at the time, Brian eventually realized his friends were being generous when they told him it needed work. Years after graduating with his bachelor's degree in creative writing, he continued to scribble down scenes for the same story as he worked as a customer support representative at a computer game company. An injury to his hands left him unable to use them for more than turning on the television, so working a mouse and keyboard eight hours a day was completely out of the question. Between recovery exercises and visits to many doctors, Brian used voice recognition software to start writing seriously again, which served as a cure to his painful boredom and a distraction to his even more painful injury. Workers comp eventually ran out, and his hands hadn't improved much. Living with his parents, and suffering from an injury that seemed as if it may be permanent, his mood was morose at best. But his novel, Bastial Energy, was nearly done. He published it and was overjoyed at the result of more than a thousand purchases in the first month. Now Brian is a full-time author. He still uses voice recognition software, but more so out of preference than necessity, and--while he loves his parents--he's thankful to have moved out of their home. In terms of writing, Brian likes to outline the entire novel before writing the first draft. He loves to write and feels thankful he can spend every day doing just that. Visit B.T. Narro (Book 3 of the Pyforial Mage Trilogy) is a great example of how a fantasy action book should be written. It is full of action and adventure and will leave you gasping for breath.I have read several books by B. T. Narro and he has never disappointed me. He is an excellent storyteller and this book is no exception. The fast paced story is full of intrigue and adventure. The many plot twist and turns make it hard to put down.I love the cast of characters B. T. Narro has put together for this series. They are real and easy to identify with. Their weaknesses and strengths bring them to life in the story.I really like Pyforial Games and the entire Pyforial Mage Trilogy by B. T. Narro and I highly recommend this book to all readers.[Please note: I was given a free copy of this book in exchange for my honest review.]

I was reading another series for my bedtime routine, waiting for the last of this book to release. I then began alternating between reading the two series, and finally had to set the other series aside and stick with this one. I wish the author would continue with this series. I'd love to see what happens further along with Neeko and Shara. :)

FREE Gift Inside...Download Now Cross stitch is a method of embroidery in which stitches are sewn in a tiled pattern to form letters or images. It is comparable to modern digital images created using pixels. The earliest American example of this work is from the 1600’s, but there are likely European examples which are much older. Cross stitch embroidery was often used to personalize and embellish useful household items such as napkins and dish cloths. However, it evolved into use for more decorative purposes, as well. It is now more frequently used to create images and sayings on pillow covers and wall hangings. Because of the way the thread is precariously anchored, it is generally not used on clothing. There are several methods for threading the needle, for beginning the piece, for working the actual stitches and also for finishing the piece. There is not so much a right and wrong way so much as there are “ways that will look the best” and “ways which may be easier, but do not look as good.” The best way to start cross stitch is the old-fashioned way. Make your own pattern on a piece of graph paper, practice each style of stitching and create a “sampler” for reference. A sampler is a piece of cross stitch embroidery that was often made by young girls who were first learning the craft in order to practice their stitching while simultaneously creating a reference card for all the stitches they had learned. It was often decorative, as well, showcasing the alphabet, numbers 0-9, their name or perhaps a simple picture.

These books are both for beginners, if you’re an expert at it I wouldnt recommend this book. If youre a noob like myself then you would like these books. “A girl wants to commit suicide, while a woman seeks to live; a monster wants to become a human, and a man wakes up to a dream. Someone is waiting for lost love, someone is afraid of paintings; a monk converses with a Grim Reaper, and an old man is confessing.” ‘Inked in Illusions’ is a collection of thirteen short stories and a multitude of emotions. Amidst truth, lies, innocence and deception, all the stories are set in different backdrops and belong to different genres – Thriller, Suspense, Mystery, Drama, Romance and Horror, making the book a very interesting read. The beauty of our life lies in its unpredictability. While a new story begins every second, every another moment can bring a new twist in the plot. This exactly is the theme of this book. While some of the stories can make you smile, few will bring tears in your eyes, and the others will definitely leave you baffled. Strange characters emerge over the pages of the book, and still strange seem their stories. Will they all find what they are searching for? Or will life surprise them all?

And that too from a MBA Graduate? Grabbed my attention...honestly I was bored of the similar kind of storylines from the MBA GRAD INDIAN WRITERS...this was different, at least by the title and description.I was not wrong, 13 short stories , each of merely 10-12 pages had all the ups-downs-twists in it..While my personal favorite 'Wish Makers' ,the 1st story in the book, left me baffled on the sudden plot twist; the 2nd one compelled me to read the last few lines again once the story completed , such was the impact. While 'Portrayed' had a completely different story line , 'His Last Story' was an example of perfect story-telling .We all believe "All well that ends well" - the book followed the saying.Well this book is a fresh air in the suffocated MBA GRAD story -telling culture and I hope more writers will be interested in different topics and short stories.I will be looking forward for your next book, be it short stories or a novel. Also, I am quite surprised to see the count of stories in the book , 13...widely considered as Unlucky ....but u dared to make this number lucky for you and I hope it happens to be.

The King in Yellow, by Robert W Chambers

From the Publisher From the Editor's Introduction:

To the extent that Robert W. Chambers (1865-1933) is remembered at all today, it is for "The King in Yellow", an odd collection of supernatural and "French" stories first published in 1895. It was followed by a few science-fiction comedies which are still reprinted from time to time, and then by dozens of popular historical romances and "society" novels, now long out of print and apparently unlamented. That he was originally an artist and friend of the famous Charles Dana Gibson is now mostly forgotten; knowing this, the reader can guess that Chambers was an art student in the Latin Quarter and attended the schools mentioned in his stories.

For his weird tales, Chambers took some names from Ambrose Bierce, and his own stories were later mined by H. P. Lovecraft and the pulp magazine writers of his circle. Such usage has kept "The King in Yellow", if not alive, then at least in the awareness of readers of the fantasy and horror genre. For all I know, the references have now spread to board games, rock music albums and cult television programs.

Like other readers of such literature, when I was young I enjoyed the supernatural stories in the first half of the book, but tended to skip over the tales of the artists' life in Paris in the second half. Indeed, several editions have omitted these stories entirely, substituting others more likely to appeal to the fantasy reader. However, as I grow older, the French stories appeal to me more and more. I am grateful for even a small glimpse into the author's youth in another time and place, now long gone. As an aside: the characters of these stories first appeared in Chambers' first book, "In the Quarter", which appeared in 1894.

What is "The King in Yellow" about? ("There are so many things which are impossible to explain"). The title refers to a book within our book, actually to a play in two acts, and to a supernatural character within that play who we suspect also exists outside of it. We know very little of the contents of the play, but discover that it drives the reader insane and damns his soul. Yet the book is said to be beautiful, expressing the "supreme note of art". As such, the device is a perfect one for the Decadent time in which it was created, suggesting the flowers of evil, the admixture of life and decay, beauty and malevolence.

As we move into the French stories, the supernatural elements fade away. We still have the themes of the danger of too much knowledge, and of innocence threatened and protected. The stories are loosely connected but not presented in any sort of chronological order. In fact, the first, "The Repairer of Reputations", is set in the future of 1920, and one of the later stories, "The Street of the First Shell", is a realistic account of the siege of Paris in 1870. Did Chambers have a reason for arranging the book in this way? Perhaps he wanted to introduce some distance from the locus of horror, showing how evil ripples out from a center, never entirely vanishing, but diminishing and being conquered by love. As dark as his vision may be, hope and love are never absent.

A reader is allowed his favorites. I have two: "The Mask" features a striking combination of hope and the intimation of transcendence, set against the sinister background of Chambers' mythology. It is the most Catholic of his stories, a strain that runs through many of them. And, at six pages, "The Street of the Four Winds" is one of the most perfect short stories I know.

About the Author Robert W. Chambers (1865-1933) was an American author as well as an artist. His best known work is the collection The King in Yellow. His work ranged from fantasy, horror, and science fiction to romance and historical fiction.

Excerpt. © Reprinted by permission. All rights reserved. From "The Yellow Sign":

There are so many things which are impossible to explain! Why should certain chords in music make me think of the brown and golden tints of autumn foliage? Why should the Mass of Sainte Cecile send my thoughts wandering among caverns whose walls blaze with ragged masses of virgin silver? What was it in the roar and turmoil of Broadway at six o'clock that flashed before my eyes the picture of a still Breton forest where sunlight filtered through spring foliage and Sylvia bent, half curiously, half tenderly, over a small green lizard, murmuring: "To think that this also is a little ward of God!"

When I first saw the watchman his back was toward me. I looked at him indifferently until he went into the church. I paid no more attention to him than I had to any other man who lounged through Washington Square that morning, and when I shut my window and turned back into my studio I had forgotten him. Late in the afternoon, the day being warm, I raised the window again and leaned out to get a sniff of air. A man was standing in the courtyard of the church, and I noticed him again with as little interest as I had that morning. I looked across the square to where the fountain was playing and then, with my mind filled with vague impressions of trees, asphalt drives, and the moving groups of nursemaids and holiday-makers, I started to walk back to my easel. As I turned, my listless glance included the man below in the churchyard. His face was toward me now, and with a perfectly involuntary movement I bent to see it. At the same moment he raised his head and looked at me. Instantly I thought of a coffin-worm. Whatever it was about the man that repelled me I did not know, but the impression of a plump white grave-worm was so intense and nauseating that I must have shown it in my expression, for he turned his puffy face away with a movement which made me think of a disturbed grub in a chestnut.

Or, more properly, it's a collection of macabre short stories with a common theme; a fictional two-act play that brings decadence, hallucinations, and madness to any reader. The stories within this collection, published in 1895, are set in a fictional militaristic 1920s in both the USA and Europe. The tales stand free of each other, and are told from a number of different perspectives, by socialites, soldiers, and artists. Each tells how the lives of the narrator and colleagues have been affected by reading "The King in Yellow", a controversial play that has been denounced by the church and suppressed by governments. After coming into contact with it, their lives are tragically affected. Some find themselves hounded by shadowy agents, while others become confused and delusional. Others are driven to act out the play's sad and decadent events, while some simply go insane. The substance of the play itself is only alluded to, or hinted at in brief extracts. It is clearly a tragedy, but the motivations and actions of its central characters, including the mysterious King in Yellow himself, are not clear. Like many authors of macabre tales, Chambers was content for our imaginations to do the work, and this book is more powerful for it.(And by the way, if the central theme of a forbidden book that induces insanity is familiar to you, you've probably read some of the Mythos tales of H.P.Lovecraft. In fact, I doubt that too many people come to read "The King in Yellow" by any other route; Chambers' book is clearly stated as a strong influence on Lovecraft's work.)To be honest, I was shocked to find myself reading a book that was over a HUNDRED years old, an activity I had assumed was reserved for crusty academics and lovers of classical literature. But, more pointedly, I was surprised to find that "The King in Yellow" is a highly readable volume, full of entertaining, colourful and disturbi! ng tales with a very modern feel to them. The only downside I found was that the final few stories lose the central theme. I found myself wondering if these thinner, romantic tales, were more representative of Chambers' other work, and were, in effect, "fillers". But perhaps I missed the point? It is only this that stops me from awarding five stars to this impressive book.Overall, if you've had a bellyful of today's crop of relentless gore and explicit sexuality, take a literary Alka Seltzer by checking out the "King in Yellow".It's a classic, and I'm not talking Jane Austen.

By Preston Halcomb This collection of stories by Robert Chambers is an excellent companion to anyone who enjoys the Cthulhu Mythos and wants to delve into some of the inspiration for Lovecraft's fiction. Reading these stories was very much like stepping through a doorway into another dimension. The characters were well written and the plot was filled with madness and lurking horror. I would highly recommend this book to anyone.

(He stole the name and vague concept of Hastur from it.) The frustrating thing about RW Chambers is that he COULD write very well, but for some reason he usually didn't. At his best he could weave an atmosphere of terrifying hallucinatory brilliance. At his worst he was hokey, sentimental, sappy, and tiresome. Half of his original _The King in Yellow_ consists of dopey romance stories that will infuriate the wierd fiction fan. Not so here. This Dover collection has only the best tales from _The King in Yellow_, as well as a number of other chilling morsels picked from Chambers' large body of later (mostly forgettable) work. You should get hold of this collection just for "The Repairer of Reputations," which ranks as a superior masterpiece of surreal paranoid delirium. It's one of the top 5 wierd stories of all time, and actually BETTER than anything by Lovecraft.

About the Author

Evan Currie is the bestselling author of the Odyssey One series, the Warrior’s Wings series, and more. Although his post-secondary education was in computer sciences, and although he has worked in the local lobster industry steadily over the last decade, writing has always been his true passion. Currie himself says it best: “It’s what I do for fun and to relax. There’s not much I can imagine that’s better than being a storyteller.”

By Talvi I've really enjoyed Currie's Odyssey One stories and King of Thieves is in that same vein: plenty of action, a wide cast of unique and relatable characters, and plenty of space opera. It's a winning combination that keeps readers invested in the story as each book reveals more and more about the Drasin menace. King of Thieves has a new cast of characters and can be treated as a stand alone or introduction to the series without comprehension or spoiler issues. Of course, I'm going to recommend starting with the first in the series because I have enjoyed it so much.Story: The Autolycus is one of the last Earth built ships - a stealth model that doesn't have all the new, world-shattering energy sources of the Priminae. But that 'old school' tech is stealthier and more mobile as a result. While Eric Weston has a new command (on a Priminae-earth hybrid set of ships called Heroics) and a new mission, Captain Morgan Passer is assigned to take the Autolycus out to examine an anomaly and determine that it isn't a Dyson Construct. What the Auto finds, however, could very well tip the balance of war - if the crew survives long enough to bring their information back home to a Drasin-ravaged Earth. For if there is one thing upon which both Weston and Passer agree - it's that the Drasin isn't the problem - it's the people who unleashed them that need to be taken out.Although most of the cast is new, the quirky linguist, Dr. Palin, was brought back to create more mayhem among the crew. As well, tension is introduced through the inclusion of individuals from The Block - Weston's former enemy. They have gravity technology integrated into the Autolycus that make the ship especially useful for escaping detection. But a Block second in command and several engineers mean that old hostilities and grudges are going to be problematic.I did have a minor quiblle: as much as I enjoyed the book, I did feel let down a bit by the plot. For me, there was too much an homage to Aliens and Star Trek; that ended up pulling me out of the story or made the plot feel recycled. A lot of the Aliens plot is used wholesale - and several dialogues were nearly verbatim out of the Aliens movie (I think Currie must have really liked Paxton's pvt. Hudson since several of his lines were in there). As well, references to "red shirts" is an ok joke but then to name the Autolycus' Engineer 'Doohan' (I can only assume as an homage to James Doohan who played the Star Trek Original Series Engineer Scotty) and another Engineer 'Scott' seemed a bit much. I don't want to feel like I am fed little winks or fanboy reduxes - I am looking to enjoy original stories. Every time I read Doohan, I got distracted and wanted to go watch an old Star Trek rerun. The above aside, I greatly enjoyed King of Thieves. Currie has such a great way of creating likeable and engaging characters that the multiple POVs never get annoying as they do in other books. I still prefer to not get alien POVs (it makes them sound too human or anthropomorphic) but there are maybe 1-2 quick alien POVs this time around. Once I started this story, I really didn't want to put it down. There is a great mystery and plenty of exploration - the things that Currie writes best. He also takes a lot of time to explain the science, most of which deals with what gravity can do (or not do). I can't vouch for the validity of the science but it added legitimacy without overwhelming the human side of the story. For those who want a taste of the Odyssey One series but without the huge commitment of the large first volume, this is a fairly safe way to get a feel for the story without the problem of major spoilers or getting lost. It's about a separate crew on a separate mission but it ties in with the main plot due to what they find and what it means for the next stage of the war with the Drasin. In all, I greatly enjoyed King of Thieves and highly recommend it. Reviewed from an advance reader copy provided by the publisher.

Don't just Evan Currie by this book (his other books are much, much, better) By Teamchaos I'm a fan of Evan Currie's writing, I've read everything he's published on Kindle. This book was a disappointment. The first act was okay but the 2nd and 3rd acts were a let down. After the first 1/3 of the book I was just scanning pages. Ship finds an unusual moon ... sends down landing party ... a bit of fighting on the moon ... a bit of fighting in the moon ... ship in trouble ... more fighting in the moon ... more fighting on the moon ... ship still in trouble ... more fighting in the moon ... more fighting on the moon ... engineer comes up with miracle to save the ship ... more fighting in the moon ...Come on Evan. You can do so much better than this. The aliens were not Aliens or Predators, the marines should have wiped the floor with them and the ship could have sped off to the next challenge. Perhaps they could have even used the alien technology as a weapon to save the ship in the 3rd act. You spent way too long in the 2nd act on this one, should have been two or three chapters not 2/3rd of the book. My suggestion - release the next book in the series and then give this one away for free for folks that want a bit (and it's a very little bit) of back story necessary to setup the next novel.

Interesting Ideas, but Missed the Mark By Matt I usually enjoy Evan Currie's work, but for some reason I had a difficult time getting through the book. It had some interesting concepts and it did have action, but it still moved very slowly. This may have been partly due to rotating Point Of View (POV), which I generally don't like. I applaud the author for attempting it (even though I wouldn't, myself), but I found it very distracting and it made it very difficult for me to 'stay in the story.' Maybe it would've worked better with less characters in the POV rotation, but I would've liked more story progression.Additionally, and I've noticed this in some other books from this author, the writing is overly dramatic. The amazing things that the characters are doing are generally oversold ... I think most readers understand when a character is doing something extremely challenging, brave, etc.; it doesn't need to be explained melodramatically. (In this book and some others, the word "insane" and similar phrases involving sanity are used very often, for example.) I'm going to keep buying Mr. Currie's books because I think he is creative, has a lot of potential, and has produced some very good books already. That being said, this book was easy to put down.

Finding out you’re a vampire, having your best friend get kidnapped, and trying to make up with your ex all while hunting evil vampires and trying to take down the agency who stole your life can be exhausting! Seriously. Poor Aurora. But it does make for great reading! Everything that can go wrong, does go wrong as Aurora tries to rescue Dante. Plans keep getting interrupted, and then ruining possible escape plans! Crazy redheads commit vandalism while you’re having a hot make out session! So much happens!I really enjoyed Hunting Season. It just may be my favorite of the series so far! Really, any book that opens with some getting punched in the face is probably going to get me excited! Aurora may not like violence, but she knows how to dole it out when necessary. And she is willing to do anything to get Dante back. Not just because he’s her best friend and partner, but because she needs to be honest about her feelings for him. Or lack thereof. This upset me so much! I love Dante! I wanted him and Aurora (and Fane!) together! But I totally get that she loves him as a friend, but she didn’t let her feelings for Fane get in the way of the rescue either. There will be a time for romance later! I hope! Now that my love for Dante is out of the way, I’ll talk about the nonstop plot of Hunting Season. Like I said before, everything goes wrong! Aurora and Company have good plans in place, but something always messes them up! Then some aspect of their plan conflicts with possible back up plans or escape plans, and I was just so nervous for them all the time! Why can’t something go smoothly!? Although one screwed up plan did allow us to get to know Fane a lot better. His past is very interesting, and I’d actually love a novella about his early time as a vampire!Hunting Season was pretty great. Something is always happening! Plot points actually move forward even though there are a lot of setbacks. We get to learn more about each of the characters, which I always appreciate. And there’s no cliffhanger! Well, the ending isn’t nice and neat, since stuff still needs to get done, but for the most part it ends on a relatively calm note. Now to wait for more!*Disclaimer: I received this book from the author for review. No compensation was offered or accepted.

It opens with a bang and runs at a pretty breakneck pace throughout. Good news for Fane lovers, he makes much more of an appearance in this book than he did in the last one. Without giving too much away, the series is advanced in a satisfactory manner and more answers to Aurora, Noel, Dante, and Valerie's situation are given. We're also given more backstory about Jared, Melcher, Fane, and Gabrielle.Given that we're left with a cliffhanger of sorts, I can't wait until the next book comes out.

2 of 2 people found the following review helpful. Action packed By Heather Holman Aurora Sky continues to meet adversity with courage and resilience in this installment while she works with Noel and Fane to rescue Dante. I find myself liking Fane more and more. Jefford has a high quality writing style that includes well-developed characters, intricate plot development that flows all the way to the end, and realistic settings. She closes the book leaving the reader reeling for more.

By Barbara (Paging Through The Days) First off, I have to say thank you to Alisa Woods for providing me with an ARC of this installment. Second.. I LOVED IT! Not that I ever would have guessed different. As this serial unwinds I’ve grown to love the characters more and more. And this installment made my feels go all over the place. But that is always a good thing.**spoiler alert**This one s hard to review for the simple fact that from page one to the end its non stop, heart pounding and has you falling over yourself to get to the next page to see what is going on. I love Arianna and Jak, Jak is a good man on a mission to save the woman that he loves from Mace. He wants all traces of Mace gone so that Arianna can get as far away from him as she can. Jak wants to keep her safe and more importantly he wants her to be able to have a real life. One where she is not controlled or manipulated by a dick-head alpha with a dark, manipulative side. Arianna needs a real man, a real wolf to take care of her, to love her and to be there for her. To protect her and her future.Jak and Circe have a plan worked out. He will go to her, do what is asked and she will do the spell to take Mace’s alpha bond from Arianna. He knows the risks associated with this spell. But nothing will stop him from doing it. Jak loves Arianna and love knows no boundaries in a time like this. When Jak meets Circe things change between them, so much so that she tries to discourage him from doing this spell.. but even she can see how much he loves Arianna. So she does him one better. Circe introduces Jak to Adrianna’s brothers. Marco and Kalis. Both strong boys who had to grow up fast. Marco, the oldest has proven himself to Jak. Proven he can take care of his sister if this ends badly for Jak. Kalis is young but he will still be there to help protect Arianna. When Arianna and Sarra meet them all at the Morgan Media group they pile in Sarra’s jeep and head off to a secure location to do this spell…. then its game on. But when Sarra, who has been silently fuming this whole time figures out exactly what Jak is doing.. it may be too late to stop this from ending badly.

By Caroline After the initial escape from Mace (Arianna’s unwanted mate and alpha) in the last instalment, entitled Escape, it is Jak’s every intention to ensure the safety of Arianna and her family from Mace’s wrath. Even if it means he has to give up his own life to do so. The heat is on, but Jak has a plan, or does he?Without Arianna’s knowledge, Jak is to give himself to a witch in return for her to cast a spell to rid Arianna of Mace’s magic bond to her. This should enable Arianna to live her own life, have her own pups, without Mace ever being able to have a hold on her or any child/shifter she bears. The opening scenes are with Jak and Circe, the witch who is to carry out the spell. But first, she wants her taste of Jak’s HOT wolf. This scene is intense, dark and will certainly make the reader feel just as sickened as Jak is. We know he is desperately in love with Arianna, and that’s what the reader has to keep reminding themselves. That is why he is doing this. He needs the assurance that Arianna and her family will be kept safe. She needs to be unmated from Mace. But, will the deal with Circe go according to plan? Will the witch carry out her spell, or is she just using him to have her wicked way with him?Meanwhile, Arianna is wondering where on earth he is, and what errand is taking him so long. She is sure he is in trouble. What if he can’t reach her, can’t get back to her? She knows the lengths that Mace will go to in order to get her back and seek revenge:-“… Mace isn’t just any mate – he’s a bastard dark alpha. He’ll tear through anything and anyone who stands between him and what he wants, and he really doesn’t care who he has to kill to do it.”During the course of Penance, Arianna learns of her family’s help in trying to rescue her, and she wonders why everyone is helping her. There’s Jak, her brothers, Sarra…. After all she has betrayed her bonded mate and alpha, and yet they accept her, and what is happening, even though their lives are at risk. But, she’s come this far – she can’t go back, and she couldn’t have stayed! With another 5* instalment, Alisa Woods‘ writing is simply amazing. With surprising turns in the story, strong characters and great fluidity this is a fantastic read. As with every episode thus far, there is so much packed into these short stories, not just with the storyline and action, but with the character building and their emotions – it really is hard to put down. And, you’ll be begging for more!To find out what happens you’re going to have to check out Penance for yourself! But one thing is certain – it isn’t the end until the final instalment, released on March 30th, 2015, which is also when the complete box set of Dark Alpha will be released for you to enjoy back-to-back episodes! I can’t wait for Book 6, and for Alisa Woods‘ future releases!A copy of Penance was provided by the author in return for a fair and honest review.

He Would Take A Grenade For Her By Valerie Spearman In this the penultimate episode of Dark Alpha, our hero Jak finds himself literally at the Devil's door--he is at the door of the witches office. He has decided to make the trade of sex for cooperation to break Mace's hold on Ariannna with the use of a spell provided by Circe. Circe has had her eye on Jak for quite some time and is anxiously waiting for him. But all is not as cut and dry as Jak has hoped it to be. After some conversation it seems that Circe is not as bad as he thought she would be. She has a change of heart, so-to-speak, as she realizes that sex with Jak would no doubt be as good as she hoped, but she did not want it if his heart was not in it.Meanwhile, Ariannna is driving Sarah crazy by constantly second guessing Jak. She convinces Sarah to let her use the phone to call her brothers. And what follows is drama that you don't want to miss.I thoroughly enjoyed this episode of Dark Alpha. I am quite certain the ending will be just as dramatic as all of the previous ones were and I am so looking forward to the conclusion of Jak and Ariannna's story. I highly recommend that you read this story, you will not be disappointed.I received a copy of this story as a gift and this is my honest opinion.

Wonderful Return to the Flood/Ark Universe By Review Fanatic After reading Flood on a flight I spent the first part of a vacation searching for a copy of Ark. Both books were incredible, but Ark and its interstellar journey (along with a brief look at a completely flooded Earth) was my favorite. When I discovered that Stephen Baxter published short stories expanding on the Flood/Ark universe I spent an indecent amount of time searching for the short stories online. I was able to read the first half of Earth II on its original publishers website, but that was it. The release of these short stories in one book completely made my summer. I was finally able to finish the story of Earth II, find out what happened to the children on Earth III and revisit Earth. This book is an absolute MUST HAVE for anyone who read Flood, devoured Ark, and desperately wanted to know what happened to humanity on its new homes.

No complaints, since the author did clearly state this was an exercise in worldbuilding.More importantly, it provided a fascinating insight into the two worlds settled by the Ark, and a conclusion I'd been wondering about since reading Flood and Ark, fantastic books. The third of these 3 stories wraps everything up very nicely and we learn what happened to Earth itself. Very satisfying.
