Limited water. Limited resources. No help. Brooke Fontanne has to find a way to cross the massive sea of sand that is the Mojave Desert. And with the Southwestern United States now exiled from the Union in wake of the water crisis the entire area is in chaos. Brooke is forced to battle not just the desert elements, but gangs and marauders looking to take whatever they want. Political factions are at odds with each other as Mexico is greedily eyeing the now unclaimed territory. Some congressman are using the opportunity to further exploit resources that may lie elsewhere, with Congressman Jones leading the push. Brooke is caught up in the cross hairs of both sides as the repercussions of Washington ripple through the country. The one light at the end of the tunnel is North Carolina, where her sister is waiting for her. She just has to survive the desert first.

Great Premise, But Contrived Plot Poor Writi p By Captain ET I thought about giving this series (I've read the first two books, prequel and book 2) only one star, but then I thought, "well, it's not that bad!" I thought about giving the series two stars. But then I thought, well, in book 2, there ARE some interesting moments. So, in the end, I gave it three stars as a compromise. As the title of this review indicates, the premise of the story, the central idea behind it is excellent. Moreover, it is jump step in time with real events now taking place. Just last week, it was announced that the state of California, for the first time in history, is starting water rationing. And, my friends, it is lack of water that comprises the idea behind this series. So I was excited to read this series. Unfortunately, the story quickly falls flat on its metaphorical butt because of contrived plot lines coupled with poor writing. Also, most of the characters are one-dimensional. For example, Daniel, the conflicted congressman, is not fleshed out. We do not know why he is conflicted and we learn little about the man. A one dimensional character, and there are many others like him in the book. The entire plot line of the political problems in Washington DC is badly damaged by the one dimensional nature of the characters associated with this plot line. Adding to this is the poor writing. Grammatically, the writing is fairly good. It is the dialogue and the awkwardness of the writing that is detrimental to the story. Here are just a few examples: Eric is a fighter pilot assigned to the USS Ronald Reagan, which of course is a nuclear powered aircraft carrier, a hugely important U.S. military asset. But the carrier is tied up at the dock in San Diego. Eric walks aboard, and then takes off in his fighter jet. There's just one thing wrong with this scenario: aircraft cannot take off--or land--on a stationary aircraft carrier. Why? An aircraft's wings need plenty of air, or lift, to get them airborne. That's why an aircraft carrier accelerates to near maximum speed (about 30 knots) and turn into the wind before launching aircraft. They also use catapults that push them along even faster. Thus, between the catapults, speed of the ship (and the wind that the speed creates) plus heading into the wind, allows the launch of the jets. Returning aircraft also need the ship headed into the wind to help slow the aircraft down (flaps) plus snagging on the trip wires to bring them to a halt before running off the stern of the ship. Anyway, it's an impossibility to take off or land on a carrier tied up to the dock. Another example of writing issues is the use of repetitive words. The writer describes "a massive ball of fire and orange flame flew into the air accompanied by a massive ball of smoke." So, not only do we have multiple adjectives (massive twice) but but nouns (ball) also twice. The writer could easily have substituted "enormous" to replace one of the "massive" words. There are also word choices or other descriptive phraseology that could have been used to eliminate one of the "ball" words. Also, the writer tends to overuse the word "massive" as there are at least ten instances of this word in the book. While the writing and plot contrivances were cringe worthy, the parts of the book that related to Brooke's escape from California saved the book, at least for me. This part of the story was interesting and actually better written. The entire series would have been better served if the writer had simply made this a story about the lack of water and escape by the family from California. As stated, the other plot lines are a distraction. However, the saving grace of the series is the California escape and is why I didn't give it only one star.

Exiled: 2 is the continuation of a complex story that makes you crave more, but provides you with a very satisfying progression to the whole story. With twists that are surprising and characters that are believable, you want to know more. The story switches between multiple storylines, but is surprisingly easy to follow and provides enough action and character insight to keep you reading. I am invested in the story and can’t wait to find out what happens to the characters.

By Wayne Price I was excited to read the second installment in the Exiled series and I was not disappointed. The story continues with Brooke facing many challenges to get her children to safety. This book is action packed and we learn more about characters that we loved and loved to hate that were introduced to us in the first story. This books moves at a good pace and shows the good and bad of the human condition. It's a good read and highly recommended.
