By Amazon Customer I liked the book but I found it a little tough to read. The story is very sweet and the heroine and the hero work well with each other. The pros, the heroine acts like realatively normal person (for a romance novel). She freaks out when the hero shows his beast side, but is able to calm down and think things through. She and the hero do jump into the relationship quickly, (it is a romance novel), but is the not the I see you for all of two minutes and then we we in love and planing children. I also like how the author makes the hero physical different just enough from a normal human. The hero is an alien, but he can also pass for human with his clothes still on, this makes sense or else why would they bother coming to earth in the first place. I like the overall story and the plot is a good idea but,(The cons) the story felt rushed and pushed along in many of the places. It was railroaded in a few places and end just wrapped up in a bow a lot faster then normal. It almost anticlimatic in how quickly things happen. There should have been more world building and some more background given. But it seems as if the author was figuring it out as she was writing it and didn't go back to fill in the details later. We really need those details for the overall flow of the story. There was also a lot of scene jumping, that made me have to go back and reread stuff just to make sure I was getting it right.I like the book and think it has a lot of potential, and the series is a good idea, but it felt like it needed a few more beta reads before it should have gone to print.

9 of 9 people found the following review helpful. I couldn't get through the first chapter. The writer ... By D. Shuck I couldn't get through the first chapter. The writer should read her book out loud. Is this how people really talk? NO! Very poorly written. And even the simple actions of Rena talking with her friend, thinking about her life, taking a walk, getting ready to go to the party, etc. are disjointed and awkward. When I got to the part where Rena and Dee go to the brothers' house and they kept talking about playing games, I just could not read another word. The unnaturalness of the dialogue made my whole body uncomfortable. I've been reading a lot of books on Kindle Unlimited. I am not a snob. I give writers a lot of leeway, so I'm a bit shocked at finding that there is a limit for me.

8 of 8 people found the following review helpful. Interesting storyline but undeveloped By Kindle Customer It was an interesting storyline. But there were so many editing errors and holes in the story that it made it difficult to read. The misuse of so many contractions, and the repetitive use of the nickname 'Doll', made it a bit of a tiresome read as well. I found myself skipping over a lot of the story . I think if they had a new editor, and added a bit to the story , this could've had a higher rating.

Sci Fi with fresh twists By Seattle Swim Mom I don't review every book I buy on Amazon; I buy pretty regularly but only review the ones that are outstanding. This one is outstanding. The heroine is a new one for me and really new in that the books starts at her birth, of which she is completely aware, and draws you into the very hard, uncompromising world she's been born into. The issues that French/Bayless look at in this book (love, happiness, fear, honor, and a moral compass where one should not exist) speak to me.My only gripe, and it's not a fair one, is that Book 2 in the series isn't out yet! I look forward to reading it.

7 of 7 people found the following review helpful. Read The Wraith's Story By jon levn In a post-apocalyptic world, flawed heroes rise above their shortcomings and strive for a better life. The world envisioned by the author is dark and dangerous and very, very real. The brutality and the emotions in this world are all more intense than our own. The vision of our future and the struggle against a warped and flawed new society is not unlike the challenges we face today. It is well-written and it is the first piece of fiction I have read in almost 20 years. I am waiting for the remaining books in this series to be published and I will read them.

6 of 7 people found the following review helpful. I love good science fiction By harrah8595 I love good science fiction; however I don't like being "weirded out" by a science fiction book. I like being able to relate on some level to the characters, the plot, the environment, etc. This book delivered on all fronts. It was definitely interest grabbing from the first page and a very easy read. The characters were well developed and the landscape of the book was intriguing, but easy to relate to. The book is well written; the reader slips into the world of the wraiths easily. My only complaint is that it ended too soon. I'm looking forward to reading the rest of the series.

I like how organized this book is. Simple yet very effective ways to clean and to keep our home very cozy. I love the ideas. I couldn't wait to use this book as as guide.

For some people it may come more naturally than others. For myself, I needed some help keeping my house clean and organized. My house was filled to the brim with objects, things, and clutter. This book helped me get it all organized quickly and efficiently. Now that everything is in its proper place, I am much more efficient and I feel much better about my house and my life. I especially like the advice about creating organized storage space, and was able to find two great locations in my house to effectively store rarely used items. This book really gave me insight on how to clean my home most efficiently. I used to really struggle with keeping the bathroom organized. Now it is spotless and I couldn't be happier. My bedroom was my other problem but now it is looking real good. I recommend this book to people who are looking for the right guide to read on cleaning and organizing. I loved the tips section at the start that will help anyone to be a bit more prepared before they make a start. Full of great advice, this book will not disappoint.

Instead of being the combination of two substantial, helpful books as I expected, it is 99 pages (including blank pages, introductions, summaries, and advertisements) of large print inanity! The author provides little gems such as, o "You can stick the small sliver of a leftover soap to a new one, instead of throwing it away." o "To lengthen the life of your mattress, it is recommended to flip it every three to four months, alternating which side you flip. To keep your mattress fresh, use the baking soda technique each time you flip your mattress, and it will keep any smell down." o "You can use a pizza cutter to cut pancakes, too." o "If you can't decide between two things, flip a coin to decide instead of mulling over each decision."I wondered who would publish such junk, but I can't find a publisher identified anywhere in or on the book. Just inside the back cover I did find, "Made in the USA San Bernardino, CA 11 September 2015." Was this self-published? Don't waste your money.

It has all sorts of interesting and intriguing ways to save money and repurposed everyday items. So that they do not need to be thrown away, I was definitely impressed with the idea of using Crown molding shop into smaller pieces. So I could be used as a hanging device for shoes or other small items I did of course know about using vinegar to clean the shower head but I had never thought about cleaning Legos or other building blocks by using a mesh bag in a washing machine or using spaghetti as a match to light. Something in hard to reach place like a candle or a barbecue or a pilot light, this book is full of useful and innovative ideas to repurpose everyday objects and hack your life to make it even better. I would definitely recommend this book to anyone that is looking for innovative and creative ways to save money. Around the house while simultaneously improving their quality of life, you will not be disappointed in this book and it is definitely worth the purchase price. It taught me many interesting things that I had never before considered when taking care of my household.

Growing up, Bryn's nightmares and the debilitating sleep episodes that came with them were what made her weak. But now that she's learned how to manipulate the dreams, they're what make her strong. Strength she'll need now that the shadows have finally trapped her in a nightmare too dark and deep for Roman to reach. But his nightmares are just as dangerously real. Roman's past has come back to haunt him, and miles away from Bryn, their both forced to fight for their lives. Alone. But they're not the only ones whose fate hangs in the balance. As the countdown to Bryn's eighteenth birthday continues, a strange epidemic sweeps the globe, and children are falling into comas at an alarming rate. When Bryn finally comes face to face with the monster controlling the shadows, it's clear that she isn't the first Dreamer he's captured, and unless she can find a way to wake back into her body and stop him from wreaking havoc in the real world, she won't be the last.

The Children Of The Moon (The Girl In Between : Series Book 3)by Laekan Zea KempThis novel continues from the end of the second novel and this review contains my review of all three novels.------- I can't claim to be a great fan of some series that include certain elements and this one could easily fall into that category. On the other hand I have to admit that the cover intrigued me; though it did almost put me off, because I rarely read horror fiction and this had that feel to it. As usual I read the sample, which was quite adequate this time and I recommend that anyone taking an interest in this series read the sample. For this reader the sample nailed it for me because of the good crisp writing style and the excellent character development. I've read a few paranormal fictions and this one might fall within that category as well as horror and the first book definitely has less elements of horror, though as the series progresses it seems to dip further and further into a dark sense that's tainted with horrific elements. In reading the sample I think that the thing to keep in mind is that the writing style and pace remain the same, which means that if you get easily hooked by the first book then you'll most likely enjoy the first three books and like the rest of us you'll be impatiently waiting for the Forth and possibly final book of the series. Still I must add the warning that this goes on my growing list of books that I love and hate at the same time and that is mostly tied with the Cliff-hanger-ish-ness of the endings. With that in mind my suggestion for anyone hooked by the sample would be to buy the three as though they were one very long book. Since there is little value in buying the bundled version, which is the same price as all three books separately, I'd go with the three separate because that dispels some of the reality that as one piece they are a huge and perhaps epic volume. As separate novels it at least fosters the illusion of reasonable size. Because book one and two are clearly cliffhangers I have a hard time resolving them down to individual pieces. Honestly speaking the third novel also is cliff-ish in nature, but it has a specific unique flavor to it that would allow it to exist as an ending that allows the reader a wide range of personal thought about the whole. To get to the story about Bryn:In the first book; The Girl In Between; I have to admit that I had some reservations about the main character making use of a debilitating disease such as KLS, Klein-Levin Syndrome, as a main plot point although it does bring to mind Elizabeth Moon's The Speed of Dark in, which she has a main character who suffers autism and that was handled quite well. Both books tend to be about how the main character fights just for some small bit of normality in their life. The main difference might be that in this story it becomes clear that there might be something more going on with the main character and that it might not be KLS at all.The story starts during one of Bryn's episodes where she sleeps for long periods of time. As it opens she's in her dream world alone as usual, but this time something, someone washes onto the beach and into her dream. A boy who has nearly drown ;and she brings him back to the brink of life just before she returns to her real life. This is the beginning of the most unusual part of book one with the mystery boy in her dreams who has no name or memories and for all intent and purpose could easily just be one more figment of her strange dreams. The dreams themselves are something that falls just outside the lines of the usual symptoms of the syndrome, but there is no mistaking that Bryn often falls to sleep for periods longer than a few days and is likely suffering something that has symptoms similar to KLS. Book one is mostly the story of Bryn and her family as they struggle to create a normal life for Bryn. Bryn is a teen in her final year of high school and is hoping to go to college. But with the episodes still occurring and the possibility that they could be with her well into her thirties, things are looking bleak. All she wants is to be normal and to lessen the burden on her family. It is not until late into book one that the boy in the dreams and the nature of the dreams begin to become a catalyst driving the story toward the darker and more horrific elements to show up in the next book. Still without the horror there is something compelling about the authors handling of the story that drove this reader on through to the end. And though the ending is not quite complete I felt compelled to continue with reading into book two.Book one is a good, well written, YA fantasy that addresses some of the issues of the debilitating disease and how it affects not just the patient but the whole family that surround her. It's also a novel that this reader had to pay particular attention to the many details because it was too easy to lose the way and have to check back to unravel some of my own confusion.Though I managed to finish all three novels in one and a half days of reading over the weekend, it may take most readers a bit longer than that; but as I mentioned, if you're hooked by the sample then the rest of the writing should keep you hooked right through to the end of the third book.In book two the story begins to dip deeply into world building as Bryn and Roman come to terms with the struggles in their own lives while uncovering the truth about the illness that has for so long mimiced KLS. This novel also begins delving into the darker side of what might be described as a Paranormal Horror as Bryn's struggle moves from trying to be normal to trying to survive. Though Bryn and Roman have some natural bond formed between them, their lives and pasts are creating a gulf that leaves them to fight their battles separately. Bryn has a possibility of help from a duo of doctors who are researching, not just the KLS but something quite similar to what she has experienced. One of the doctors lost his daughter to something similar and has promised not to let that happen to Bryn, but in this story we will find that there are many players with their own agenda and Bryn will soon find out she has few people she can trust. The writing remains solid in this novel that should pique the interest of those who love paranormal and the elements of the horrific. But even for those who find the genre out of their sphere of interest the writing is compelling enough to draw any reader into the story. So much so that even with the second cliffhanger ending I had to continue on to see where Laekan Zea Kemp was taking all of this.I started the third book with a bit of reluctance, not knowing how many more books there might be. At the time I didn't realize the author has made at least one statement suggesting things will be wrapped up in the forth book. With that in mind my usual caution to those who dislike the never-ending stories that some series have carried on into can be tempered in that this one might have satisfactory conclusion in the next volume. For me as a reader this, the third book, though not quite a full wrap did end on a note that made it a good place to pause; because the ending, though ambiguous in nature, was quite close to endings I’ve seen in other similar books and leaves enough satisfaction and room for the reader to thoughtfully fill in their own notions about how things will end for Bryn.Still it will be interesting to find out what happens next. The third novel does a fair job of wrapping the Paranormal, sort of romance and sort of horror into something that should leave the reader anticipating the final outcome while remaining somewhat satisfied with the continuing growth of the main characters up to this point.J.L. When I read the first book, the girl in between, I didn't know what to expect. I was definitely not expecting this story of pain, fate, soul mates, destiny, and darkness.Hands down. My favorite book series of the year.I loved reading about Bryn and Roman. How they each grow and how they deal with the struggles that keep following them everywhere they. Sam is just precious. Every character is well developed and all of them belong in the book. They all contribute greatly to the story. It was an easy read but at the same time. I stopped to really think about the information coming to light. I love this!

This is a great series of books from an excellent writer! You cannot put the books down. This series is like "Highlander", "Invasion of the Body Snatchers" and "X-Men" rolled into one amazing story! The only drawback is having to wait a year for the next book in the series.

A chair devours the diminutive boss during a job interview. Linda loses a finger over a stray pinch at a party. A turtle is leery of his neighbor the oyster. Gabriela Knutson’s “Legumes” is a collection of offbeat short stories born out of the desire to butcher the English language and deprive it of any sense. Finding humor and beauty in somewhat dark spaces, “Legumes” is an absurd look at the noise that fills the quiet moments of everyday life. Illustrations by Diana Kohne Kenny.

By Mavervorl Media "After careful consideration and precise fondling," you will find Gabriela Knutson's thin volume of whimsy, absurdism in the workplace, and lust in the Alamo haystacks a diversion that re-forms as something deeper, more thoughtful, and poignant. You might find yourself three stories past a 2-page tale of a missing box of junk when the true meaning hits you. "Legumes" is a 70-page book and Amazon states that it has faith you'll read it in less than an hour. Maybe that's true, but you should revisit it often, as there's a lot more waiting to burst forth from these little beans of ridiculousness.

By Dana Busenbark Silent Sky by Regina Kammer - Jennie and Scott meet at her 30th Birthday party when her friends throw a "Bring a Single Guy" party for her birthday. He's late, due to working on class work for his MBA. What happens next between them is something I think most little girls dream about finding. Suddenly, her world is turned upside down as 9/11 hits. She watches the second tower crash down. What happens to her? What happens to Scott? Is he one of the lucky ones or does she lose her chance for kids and loving the love of her life for the rest of their lives?Homeward Bound by Alexa Silver - We pick up the story of Bry and Kell again, after having met them in the Naughty Escapes Anthology. We know from the first anthology Bryson is in the closet still as a bi-sexual man. What happens when he brings Kell home to meet his parents? Why does he drop him off at Starbucks and what happens there? What does Bry's family say about his being bisexual? The reaction is priceless and not at all what I was expecting!Lady Esther's Lesbian Lover by Berengaria Brown - What happens when Lady Esther Barrington decides she is too old, not rich enough and not beautiful enough to land herself a husband after a failed season of making a match with her older brother's help? Once her season is done, she moves back to her childhood home with her oldest brother and his wife, and their two children. The twins from next door, who's father has passed and was a good friend to her brother Stephen, have a governess, Cessie. How does life change for Esther, when her brother holds a ball for her to introduce her to the local society, so that she may acquaint herself with those that she will be living around? Jut what does Stephen's wife know about the friendship between Esther and Cessie as it has grown? It is great to see her suggest some of the things that she does, helping their friendship to grow stronger.Renovating the Relationship by Katerine Kingston - Brad and Drew live together in a rather large house. Neither is a good cook or housekeeper. An old friend of Brad's needs some relief from monetary issues and he recommends her to Drew to interview as a cook and housekeeper. Apparently she was married to a man named Tom that she met after her relationship with Brad did not work out quite as she needed things to be. What happens when she meets Brad again, while she's interviewing with Drew? Brad takes care of the gardens, and is working on bringing them back to life. Does the love still exist between Brad and Dani? Where does Drew figure into the equation with them, other than as Employer? Read this wonderfully erotic story.Part 2: The Wyndmaster's Homecoming by Charlotte Boyett-Compo - Once again we see Marisol and Santos embroiled in issues. This story picks up where the first one in Naughty Escapes leaves off. She is on a rescue mission. Does she succeed or fail? What happens to Santos, how close to death is he? What happens to the Princess that had the audacity to steal his ship and lie to him by stealing a uniform? What does her father do about her transgressions? What does Marisol come up with as a truly perfect punishment for the pampered Princess and what does she say to the father that he capitulates? Read and see what happens. I'm grinning from ear to ear with the end result.Back In Your Arms by Marianne Stephens - Brian appears to be a general contractor of sorts in a small town. Years before, his father was the banker in that town, and a girl he loved, Liz and her parents owned a B&B there in town. The bank had to foreclose on it. One day, Mrs. Morton comes in, wanting to buy the former B&B, and has stipulated in the contract that Brian be on hand every day, he does the work, and oversees everything. Who is this Mrs. Morton that comes in, and is making him jump through all these hoops to get this former B&B back to it's glory days?My Cups Runneth Over by Francesca Hawley - Once upon a time, Brook and Delia were seeing one another, and probably would have married, until a tarot reading done for Brook and a premonition. This caused him to cast Delia out of his life. Years later, they run into one another at a friend's wedding. They're both part of the joining ceremony for the couple. Can they work out what happened? Can he put his fears aside, and listen to what the tarot cards from his personalized deck are telling him, or does the premonition get in the way?Ocean Dreams by Suz DeMello - This is one of those crazy little love stories that will have you giggling your way through the book. Especially when you find out who Blue is to Sandi. How does she know him and when was the last time she saw him? Oh my goodness! This book is a hoot! I so was NOT expecting what happened in the middle of her time swimming with a dolphin! What happens when a former boss shows up at the B&B she's staying at with a uniformed person, looking for something she 'clearly' does not have tucked away in her shower? This is one of the cutest books I have read. Lots of fun.Hybrid Mates 5: Take Me Home by Nicole Austin - A lioness, wanting to be free and run, Chloe's father ruled the local pride of lions. He banished her after she had been raped and forced into a mating with the bite that he gave her. It took years for her to go back and visit her family, but when she did, what was waiting for her was a shock for everyone! What a wonderfully inspirational story about overcoming adversity and race.A free reading copy of this book was provided to me in exchange for my honest review. I RECEIVED THIS BOOK AS A GIFT FOR A FAIR/HONEST REVIEW and REVIEWER FOR Bloggin' With M.Brennan.

8 of 8 people found the following review helpful. uniting all fronts By Ailyn Koay Naughty Reunions is a set of stories meant for adult eyes only. Different author tells a different story, so you have 9 unique stories and characters for the price of 1. Not for unadventurous people, or one that thinks the world is straight line.Like most anthologies, authors have different talents and skill levels. The length of each story varies, allowing the readers to fully enjoy before moving on to the next, but they are all not long reads.Just because they are short, does not mean that they are uncomplicated, they pack a punch in drama and conflict. I prefer my adult books that way, interesting and quick, a book a night keeps everything light. Of course some are heartwarming, if that is what you normally go for.Overall, all the stories are good, so it is worth reading. Even though I did not buy this book, since it was given to me, I felt that if you did buy this book, you would not be disappointed. I had received this for a fair review

5 of 5 people found the following review helpful. From sweet to erotic By L. S. Tucker Nine stories of lovers reuniting and finding their other halves. Another great collection of stories from the group of writers known collectively as Naughty Literati. I give the collection 4 out of 5."Silent Sky" by Regina Kammer. (m/f) After the Towers fell, Jennie thought her husband had perished in them. As she grieves, she remembers how she first met Scott and how his job began to affect their marriage and love life. I don't like heroes and/or heroines who commit adultery, so that did affect my reaction to this story. Kammer has, however, provided a well-written tale about a horrible day. 3.5 out of 5."Homeward Bound" by Alexa Silver. (m/m) Sequel to "Get Away" found in the NAUGHTY ESCAPES collection. Popular actor/director Bryson Ossnick has decided it is time to come out as bisexual. His lover, musician Kellen Petric is thrilled, but isn't certain Bry is ready for all that comes with the reveal. I really love catching up with Bry and Kel. It would be great to continue checking in on the two men to see how Bry's decision affects them, both professionally and personally. Both men are well-drawn and relatable. I enjoy them both! 4.5 out of 5."Lady Esther's Lesbian Lover" by Berengaria Brown. (f/f) Too old, not beautiful, and with a portion barely adequate, Lady Esther Barrington had no marriage prospects. She wasn't really disappointed as, deep inside, she knew she was more attracted to women. Cecilia Aylmer was a very well-educated vicar's daughter who was governess to Lady Esther's nieces and nephews, Cessie and Esther begin as friends, then become so much more. Erotic, but not overly graphic. A meeting of two women outside the norm who seem to have an understanding helper. 3.5 out of 5."Renovating the Relationship" by Katherine Kingston. (m/f/m) Brad Carpenter knows his boss, Drew Robertson, needs someone to supervise the mansion renovations. He suggests widow Dani Scott, a woman he loved, but lost because he couldn't supply the type of intense pain she desired. Now he has an idea that will give them both what they want. Very hot, a unique solution to a difficult problem. I am pleased that Drew will be getting his own story as I'm intrigued by the character. 4.5 out of 5."The Wyndmaster's Homecoming, Part 2" by Charlotte Boyett-Compo. (m/f) Continuing the story begun in NAUGHTY ESCAPES collection. Major Marisol Diaz rescues her player lover Santos Cabrera from the prison planet. Santos has plenty of time to think about their relationship as he heals. A nice finish, with Marisol as both the rescuer and the solver of Santos' many problems. Extremely hot at the end. 3.5 out of 5."Back in Your Arms" by Marianne Stephens. (m/f) Brian Benson is surprised that his new client is the woman he once loved, but lost after his father's bank foreclosed on her family's home. Elizabeth Morton is fixing up the place to give back to her parents. Started out very strong, but soon lost what could've been an interesting conflict, falling instead into a series of sexual encounters with a touch of spanking. 3 out of 5."My Cups Runneth Over" by Francesca Hawley. (m/f) Brook Linden had left the woman he loved to avoid causing her death. As the years moved on, he focused on his glass-making art. Now the Tarot cards are predicting marriage. Delia Heath meets Brook again at a joining ceremony. Maybe they have a second chance. Sweet and hot, all in one. Brook's struggles to keep Delia safe are understandable, but what he *saw* was just waiting for him. 4 out of 5."Ocean Dreams" by Suz deMello. (m/f) Sandi Ricks returned to see dolphin Blue and is convinced to come in the water with him. Boy, does she get a big surprise when doing so! LOVED the tip of the writing hat to the original Ivan Tors series FLIPPER as well as the two films that preceded it. A generation of children came to love and respect the ocean creatures. An unusual shifter tale that also touches on the movement to free or, at the very least, improve the lives of the acquatic creatures in captivity. 4 out of 5."Take Me Home" by Nicole Austin. (m/f) Hybrid Mates 5. Chloe Stanis brought her son Cody to a family get-together, the first real contact since she was raped at 16 and thrown out of the pride by her father. She is terrified when she recognizes her new stepbrother, Declan Andris, as he mate. Told in first person, we see that Chloe may be damaged, but she was strong enough to survive and raise her son on her own. But to have happily ever after, Declan must convince her that she is safe with him. And then there is Leo, her father, appearing at the reunion. 4 out of 5.

They are quick reads but for 99 cents they are a bargain. This story is very engrossing and unique, very excited to follow along with the next segment! To the reviewer who complained at these being "chapters" and accusing the suthor if milking it... They are 99 cents each! If you put the 3 installments together they would be as long as a book and then be $3, or basically what a book like this might cost outright. I like the shorter installments coming out in less time rather than waiting a year for the entire book. Some people would complain about winning a free car because they wanted a red one and not a blue care, i swear. Lighten up

Jack has been working in the junkyard, which is described as an almost endless field of things brought in from the devastated, outside world. It also includes old buildings that are stories high.Jack is then transferred to the "scabs", which is where the junk is radioactive. When he gets there, he is assigned to a group and starts going through even more junk, looking particularly for metal. We find out the ships that leave the planet are made up of recycled metal because nothing is manufactured any more.It is interesting that Jack finds camaraderie in his new team. They fill him in on the rules and trading. They also tell him about The Junkers, another group that supposedly eats people. They kidnapped two hundred women and children months earlier. There are also mutated bugs they have to worry about. While they are locked in their carrier, they hear things scratching at the outside. We again learn a little more about Jack's past, and towards the end of the book, Jack finds a clue that may be related to Ryan.I liked this installment a lot. The friendship among the "scabs" was unexpected. The descriptions of the junk fields are almost impossible to comprehend. They are gigantic and these men are expected to go through all of it so that the "privileged" class can leave the planet.A new character--the Governor--is introduced. He is described as an overweight weasel. In a post-apocalyptic book, anyone who is overweight must be corrupt because everyone else is near starving. I expect he will be explained further in the next books. This is an excellent installment of this series.

The Mechanical (The Alchemy Wars), by Ian Tregillis

Review "There are a number of marvelous action scenes, hallucinogenic in their over-the-top big-screen violence, but the real attraction here is Tregilli's narrative ruthlessness, which manifest as willingness to take his character to the brink of hell...and then, rather than yank them back at the last second, push them in."―SciFi Magazine on The Mechanical "A major talent."―George R.R. Martin on Bitter Seeds"Superb alternate history filled with clockwork men and ethical questions on the nature of free will. ... Tregillis's complex setting is elegantly delivered, and the rich characters and gripping story really make this tale soar."―Publishers Weekly on The Mechanical "The first thing readers will say after finishing this splendid book is: 'Wow.' The second thing will probably be: 'When can I read the next one?'"―Booklist on The Mechanical "Tregillis presents a fascinating look at the nature of free will and the existence of the soul, wrapped up in an absolutely thrilling adventure story. Jax is an amazing, sympathetic character, and the world of the clockmakers and their slaves is so absorbing that readers will be dying for the next entry in this new series."―Library Journal on The Mechanical "Thrilling philosophical clock punk."―B&N Sci-Fi & Fantasy Blog on The Mechanical "His characters are as convincing as ever, the plotting is beautifully articulated, the tone relentlessly grim and sometimes horrifying. And while the action rarely flags, Tregillis manages to pack in a good deal of philosophical probing...readers with an interest in dark, intelligent fantasy-will find much to admire here."―Kirkus on The Mechanical"In the tradition of Isaac Asimov, Tregillis's latest novel combines classic robotics with historical fiction to riveting ends. Tregillis brings an intriguing touch to his narrative, as parts of actual Dutch history, such as colonization, the founding of New Amsterdam and reliance on slavery, are reflected in the fictionalized country's conquering of the rest of the world. Further, the story manages to posit broad questions, such as how one defines humanity and free will, without coming across as sanctimonious or treacly. It's also just plain exciting, with intense fight scenes and exhilarating narrow escapes. Readers will no doubt be rooting for the "rogue" robots."―RT Book Reviews on The Mechanical"...By the end of the novel, the physical and emotional transformations they have endured promise an even more exciting sequel. This tightly wound plot yields timely conversations regarding consciousness and technology as various forms of human and machine merge."―The Washington Post on The Mechanical"While merely the warm-up for what promises to be a uniquely compelling series, The Mechanical is as intricate and exquisite as the clockwork wonders it brings to life."―NPR Books on The Mechanical

About the Author Ian Tregillis is the son of a bearded mountebank and a discredited tarot card reader. He was born and raised in Minnesota, where his parents had landed after fleeing the wrath of a Flemish prince. (The full story, he's told, involves a Dutch tramp steamer and a stolen horse.) Nowadays he lives in New Mexico, where he consorts with writers, scientists and other unsavoury types.

40 of 44 people found the following review helpful. Unbelievably gripping new series By Evan R. Cassity Ian Tregillis proved with his Milkweed Triptych that he is uncommonly talented when it comes to blending science fiction and fantasy seemlessly. Well, that certainly hasn't changed with this book--in fact he proves it even better than before. The Milkweed Triptych is fantastic, don't get me wrong. While reading that series I was constantly amazed at how well paced, well plotted, and well written the books were--but with The Mechanical Tregillis quickly shatters any notion that he is the same writer he was before, even if this new story is still identifiably HIS.On the surface, there are many similarities between the two stories. The Milkweed Triptych was one part alternate history, one part science fiction, and one part fantasy. The Mechanical hits all three of those markers as well, and it does it EXTREMELY well. The author sticks to a formula with which he is familiar--two opposing world powers at war use the fantastical means they have available to them to get any sort of upper hand in the battle. Only this time, it is not Nazi supermen or British warlocks engaged in the battle. Instead, mechanical wind-up slave soldiers enchanted with the alchemy of life march against those who cannot hope to combat them, only delay them.In The Mechanical, the Dutch have conquered as much of the world as they have felt like conquering, all on the backs of their clockwork soldiers called Clakkers. The French, exiled from Europe and holed up in what we know as Canada, and with whom a shaky cease-fire has been negotiated, rely on their more advanced knowledge of chemicals, scientific discovery, and good ol' spycraft to combat these unstoppable metal armies. The Clackers, thinking beings and not at all simple man-made tools (though they are treated as such), desire their own freedom more than anything. And the French, knowing they cannot hope to hold off the approach of Dutch Empire for very much longer, may have found a way to grant that freedom and save themselves in the process.I won't spoil any of the plot--it's too good not to experience first hand. I was immediately intrigued by the premise of the book when I first read about it. It sounded promising. I hoped it would be a little like Octavia Butler's novels--full of wonderful imagination and deep, philosophical concepts about what it means to be free, what it means to be human... and yet still thrilling and not bogged down with preachiness or sadness. I was not disappointed. There is enough action in this book to keep the pages turning constantly, but there is also a substance here often missing from science fiction or fantasy. Where some stories rely on their intriguing concepts to carry the reader through, The Mechanical treats the amazing concept and world Tregillis has created as what it is--a backdrop. A backdrop for a very human drama, played out between men and their very non-human clockwork creations. It reminds me a lot of Octavia Butler, actually, who was so good at bridging the gaps of any culture, species, whatever and finding the common ground. But where Octavia Butler sometimes comes off as fatalistic, Tregillis does not. There is hope in his book, and a lot of characters to root for, even if you don't notice you're rooting for them until the end.Cracking open the first page, I was struck by how much Tregillis's CRAFT has improved. Good lord, it is just plain FUN to read the sentences and paragraphs he creates. And the way he introduced you slowly into the new world he is building seems so fluid, you hardly notice you are learning about it as you read.Basically, the writing is beautiful, the worldbuilding is on point, the characters are diverse and interesting, and the plotting and pacing are even better than Tregillis has given us in the past--which is saying a lot, in my opinion.DEFINITELY give this book a read. I hope the sequels follow soon, because the story is unbelievably gripping.

By MyBookishWays I was blown away with Ian Tregillis’s Something More Than Night so was wondering if he could top it with The Mechanical. I needn’t have wondered, because he did. The Mechanical takes place mostly in The Calvanist Dutch Empire of 1926, but it’s not the 1926 we know. Mechanicals, or Clakkers, have been in use for hundreds of years, given intelligence through magic, yet they’re treated as slaves. However, they are not mindless robots. Pain is used to ensure performance, but they are ultimately beholden to the government, followed close behind by their owners. If they are given geasa (orders), they must perform the task or suffer debilitating pain. New France is at war with the Dutch Empire (The Dutch Empire defeated France in the 1700s), and there are French spies that are determined to learn the secrets of the Clakkers so they may build their own. At the forefront of this spy ring is Berenice Charlotte de Mornay-Périgord, vicomtesse de Laval, and she’s made it her mission to find out what makes the Clakkers tick (literally), no matter the cost.Good grief, this book… So, Clakkers are supposed to be nothing more than robots that serve, but as I said, they’re not. The main focus is on Jax, a servitor that serves a prominent Dutch family (and their bratty young daughter.) The book opens with Jax witnessing a hanging and the destruction of a supposedly “rogue” servitor named Perch. Perch stands up to Queen Margreet until the very end, and the last words he utters are “Clockmakers lie.” This spectacle turns Jax’s world upside down, and proves very important to events to come. Also in play is the Luuk Visser, a Catholic priest posing as a Protestant to spy for France, and Tuinier Alexandra Bell, who works for the Guild and is feared for her torture methods and command of the Stemwinders, fearsome Clakkers that do the Guild’s bidding. Visser is important, because he recruits Jax to smuggle a very special item across the sea to New Amsterdam, which should be easy, since his family is relocating there. Tregillis follows each of their stories and creates fully formed characters that leap off the page. Jax is my favorite, though, and when the Clakkers interact, it definitely calls to mind the way human servants of the 19th century would behave in any upper crust household (think Downton Abbey.) Their masters, thinking the Clakkers are incapable of independent thought (not even close to true), will say anything around them, and the Clakkers are able to communicate with each other using distinctive clicking sounds that humans simply think are part of their normal operation. Jax is a sensitive, compassionate, and empathic soul, and shows none of the world weariness that you would think would be his nature after 180 years. His is a life full of wonder, in spite of his status. Yes, “life”, because this book tackles the big questions concerning free will and what makes something alive, as well as the nature of the soul. The Mechanical is as good as it gets. The worldbuilding is fantastic, and Tregillis manages to build it over time and avoid the exposition that can sometimes accompany something this intricate. He trusts his readers, and that trust is well rewarded. The author combines old-fashioned adventure elements with intelligent, wonderfully plotted SFF, and gives us a hero to root for in Jax. If you only read a couple of books this year, make this one of them.

5 of 5 people found the following review helpful. complex characters, richly-imagined world By Sneaky Burrito My first Ian Trigellis book was "Something More Than Night," which I liked quite a bit. There were two main POV characters in that book and they had distinctive and interesting voices. Plus, I loved the little bits of physics that were thrown in. But "The Mechanical" sounded like a very different type of book, and I was eager to see what Trigellis did with it.Turns out, this book is wonderful. This time, we have three main POV characters and they're easy to tell apart. (I've read several books lately where all the characters sort of blended together and didn't have truly individual voices. So when I encounter characterization done well, I feel the need to mention it!)A bit about the worldbuilding before moving on. This is steampunk, for sure, as well as alternate history. In the world of this story, Christian Huygens invented not only the pendulum clock, but clockwork men and women (called "Clakkers" in this book). Clakkers were used by the Dutch for all manner of things -- soldiers, rowing ships, servants' tasks around the home, pulling carriages. Their "consciousnesses" were even put into airships. Clakkers' prowess as soldiers led to Dutch domination of the world -- all except a tiny sliver in what would be Canada, today, known as New France, where a Pope and a French king (in exile) reside. The French don't know the secrets of Clakkers, but they are talented in chemistry/alchemy. We see one incident of Clakker violence directed at humans and it becomes easy to imagine a world where the Dutch have taken over. (In general, at least under normal circumstances in Dutch society, Clakkers are affected by a compulsion *not* to harm humans.) I think the alternate history aspect works wonderfully. It's the kind of event most authors wouldn't have ever even considered, let alone chosen to work with, but I think the implications are very well thought through. At any rate, back to the three main POV characters. Jax is an unusual Clakker in that he's an older model and he seems quite interested in the idea of having free will. Berenice is "Talleyrand," the French spymaster. And Visser is a pastor in the Dutch homeland as well as (secretly) a Catholic priest and a spy for the French. Jax is easy to sympathize with. He's intelligent and figures out quickly how to manipulate people to get what he wants, but generally good-natured despite the manipulation. Berenice is kind of unpleasant. She's good at getting ahold of information, but she makes a couple of extraordinarily bad decisions and we sometimes wonder how she earned her high-ranking position (though the book offers some clues). Visser is the most sympathetic human character, by far, and the most tragic. I do hope his situation gets sorted out in a future book. There's a philosophical conflict in this book, as well. On the one hand, the Dutch (who are Protestant) see the Clakkers as objects to be ordered around. The French, as well as the Catholic Church, don't approve of the enslavement of the Clakkers, whom the Church believes to have souls. There are several philosophical arguments and discussions of Free Will in this book and they're actually quite interesting (in addition to illuminating the feelings of the two sides).I love the writing here. It's a bit more descriptive early on, but the vocabulary is perfect for the setting and scenario. It's just fun to read. Be forewarned: when Berenice is angry, she has a pretty foul mouth. And there is some vivid (and disgusting) imagery during a battle. But it serves to make the scene feel more realistic. There are also lots of fun little details -- once, Jax goes in for repair. The technician is supposed to check his serial number against a file. But the technician just writes down the number on a paper, which he shoves in his pocket. This is something we were constantly warned against doing in grad school (with experimental data), and Trigellis has a PhD in physics, so I know he is pulling little bits of information from his own experience in science. The ending is something of a cliffhanger, which I'm not happy about, but I am also definitely eager to read the next book and will probably buy it the day it comes out.P.S. Thanks to Danica at BestFantasyBooks for getting this into my hands so I could participate in this month's book club!
