To get you in the mood for Valentine's Day By SJ A copy of this title was received in exchange for an honest review.Soul mates and love at first sight are what this title is all about. Tanya is about to lose her job. Adam is the new billionaire boss taking over her company. Both characters are very interesting and likable. Adam is a modern version of Prince Charming and Tanya the modern Cinderella. The story moves right along. It is a quick and easy read just like a Valentine's Day card you would get from your sweetie. The story was not very descriptive in the settings area but I found that I just made up what I wanted things to look like. I could only wish that real love were this true, quick and easy. This is definitely a stand alone and has an HEA.

A Feel Good Story for a Cold Winter Day By Susanne Matthews I've been fortunate enough to read all of Melinda De Ross' books, and I thoroughly enjoyed this novella. The plot is straight forward and simple, as is necessary in a short story. In some ways, it's very much a Cinderella story. In essence, girl down in the dumps thinking she's about to lose her job meets gorgeous man who sweeps her off her feet. While she has no idea who he is, he's well aware of who she is. When she goes to work the next day, he's her new boss. Angry and humiliated, Tanya leaves. Read the story to see how these two become one another's valentines.

Delicious tale of two people first meeting by chance and falling in love at first sight. Truly a fairy tale romance. Adam & Tanya plan a life together without heavy baggage to challenge them. Definitely too sweet to be real but too delicious to be ignored. Nice change from the regular fare I'm used too. I was given this ARC in exchange for an honest review. Five Stars.

Centuries in the future, humankind, an interstellar hegemony operating under the umbrella of the UN, exists alongside five other advanced alien races. Together they form “Tier Three”, bound by a diplomatic and trade accord by which little is certain except distrust and conflict. When the kaygryn launch a suicidal assault against an Ascendancy crusade fleet, the fragile imperial compact is thrown into disarray. The Ascendancy is quick to retaliate by massacring the kaygryn, and with a human colony in the midst of the crisis, the UN launches a series of heavy-handed military interventions which succeed only in embroiling it in a deadly alien war. Four UN officials – a petulant strike commander, an ill-informed mecha pilot, a decapitated intelligence agent and an elite, narcissistic diplomat – unwittingly share reservations about the provenance of the conflict. And when the Ascendancy’s crusade fleets – vast naval armadas which have been mysteriously pouring into the next galaxy for centuries – begin to slow down, it soon becomes clear that the very survival of the human race is at stake... An action thriller told from multiple points of view, Reclamation should appeal to all fans of space opera who like their action with a healthy side order of politics, diplomacy and espionage. Reclamation forms book one of the Art of War trilogy. Keep an eye out for book two, The Ascendancy War, coming in February/March 2016. Reclamation: Book One of the Art of War Trilogy, by Richard Swan

About the Author Richard is a lawyer who lives in London with his fiancée. He has long been an avid science fiction fan, particularly of the works of Iain M Banks, Peter F Hamilton and Neal Stephenson. Richard has been writing science fiction since the age of 13. The Art of War Trilogy, currently clocking in at nearly 280,000 words, is his current labour of love, a mash-up of pulpy space opera and military techno-thriller replete with dozens of alien races and good old-fashioned galactic war, coupled with a healthy slice of diplomacy, espionage, and politics. The second book in the trilogy, The Ascendancy War, was published on 20 February 2016, and it will conclude with Empire of the Fallen in 2017. Richard's main influences are Iain M Banks' Culture series, Peter F Hamilton's Night's Dawn Trilogy, the Mass Effect and Starcraft universes, and the Chanur Saga by C.J.Cherryh. Iain M Banks's Use of Weapons is his favourite book, and Chanur's Homecoming by Mike Whelan is his favourite book cover. Any feedback on the novels is always greatly appreciated and answered without fail. The technology in layered in smoothly and supports the many surprise twists that you’ll find in this story. I can’t wait for the next book

4 of 4 people found the following review helpful. Good Overall By RonW I liked this book in the end, although it was a bit drawn out in areas. Though it didn't fit very well in the military science fiction it was listed under. Its more like a spy thriller in outer space. The author seems to like to set up a lot of characters and then randomly kill them off soon after. I'm hoping there will be another book as this one ended in a cliffhanger. So overall, good story. But not much action and a lot of sexual references. And don't expect the character you are reading about to be alive in two chapters, with few exceptions.

Slow (almost nonexistent) plot, sparse characters. And I loved it.This is an example of master craftsmanship as even though it is basically a history of a house without any overt personalization or interest in many of the things that drive us to enjoy a book, Lovecraft is able to write each word so that an atmosphere of terror slowly pervades the senses. A great read for someone learning how to drive fear by making each word matter.

4 of 4 people found the following review helpful. The Ultimate House of Horror By Pop Bop There are lots of haunted house books and stories around. They run the gamut from moody little bits of Victorian spine tingling to mega-bloody gore fests. This story, though, has a special appeal that is unique and intriguing. It is not just a story, it is more like a master class lesson in writing dread, threat and horror. We don't really have a plot. Character development is not a priority. Not a great deal "happens". This is a portrait of a house and a recounting of its tainted history. It is a demonstration of how to write horror, terror and implacable creeping menace. It's entertaining and it delivers a full measure of Lovecraft's special supremely well-crafted style of crazy weird fiction. Here's an interesting exercise. If you found this book on the Amazon Kindle site the book was displayed with just the bland red and yellow generic cover they use for out-of-copyright freebies. Read the first chapter of this story in which the house is described and its miasmatic decay is first addressed. Now, go to the Hardcover edition site and call up the original Virgil Finlay cover illustration from "Weird Tales" that appears there. That picture is absolutely one hundred per cent what you likely have in your head after reading Lovecraft's first chapter. I'm not impressed by the fact that one picture can replace a thousand words; I'm amazed that only one thousand words from Lovecraft can so successfully paint a picture like that. So, if you'd like a first taste or just a little touch of H.P. Lovecraft, this is a very nice place to begin. A happy find.

6 of 7 people found the following review helpful. descriptions within the book will overload your senses By Lizzy Lessard No book blurb is available for this short story by H. P. Lovecraft, however the descriptions within the book will overload your senses. Lovecraft braids together mood and visual details to paint a picture of quite possibly the most repulsive and horrifying haunted house. The narrator (never named) and his uncle are obsessed with this haunted house. The story deviates from the present to include the horrible history of the house and its inhabitants, so when it returns to the present to follow the narrator through a night spent with his uncle in the house's cellar, you experience the same dread and anticipation as the characters.THE SHUNNED HOUSE also has quite possibly the longest sentence ever written.

12 of 14 people found the following review helpful. Easy to Read - Great Comedy More Than Two Centuries Later By Michael Wischmeyer The School for Scandal was a pleasant surprise. We meet devious and unscrupulous characters, not the ragtag pickpockets found in later stories by Dickens, but self-centered members of the leisure class in London. The cast includes the appropriately named Lady Sneerwell, Mr. Snake, Mr. Crabtree, Sir Benjamin Backbite, Mrs. Candour, and the superficial Mr. Surface - individuals all too capable of undermining the most refined and honest reputations with innuendoes and ingenious fabrications.Unlike the literature and poetry of the preceding centuries, footnotes are not needed for this late eighteenth century play. I read the entire play in a single session, and clearly this is a comedy to be relished, one whose enjoyment comes as naturally today as when it was first staged at Drury Lane theater in London in 1777.Why does Richard Brinsley Sheridan's play still resonate with today's audience? Sheridan offers a deliciously humorous look at that fascinating and seemingly unchanging human characteristic, the propensity to gossip, to tell tales about others with only limited concern for the truth. Like Mrs. Candour, we all claim to abhor gossip, and would not ourselves consider creating fictitious tales, but are we immune from conveying stories about others, even stories which are suspect?Lady Sneerwell rationalizes: Wounded myself in the early part of my life by the envenomed tongue of slander, I have since known no pleasure equal to the reducing others to the level of my own injured reputation.Mr. Snake, another memorable villain, explains: I beg your ladyship ten thousand pardons: you paid me extremely liberally for the lie in question, but I unfortunately have been offered double to speak the truth. The School for Scandal is a classic example of an English comedy of manners. The dialogue is witty and entertaining. The plot is elaborate and contrived, but always maintains interest and momentum as Sheridan brings his intertwined subplots to an entertaining and satisfactory conclusion. Along the way we encounter devious plots and counterplots, disguised identities, and outrageous behavior. It is great fun.

6 of 6 people found the following review helpful. Comedy of Manners By AvalonSilver The aptly named Sir Oliver Surface would like to know which of his nephews is the more worthy, and, well, nothing is ever simple. This comedy of manners is one of the best ever written, and it rings true 225 years after its first performance thanks to its snide comments on English aristocrats and one-liners such as "I'm called away by particular business. But I leave my character behind me."The Dover Thrift edition has no introduction or analysis. Intoduction and analysis are of course not necessary, but in some situations they are nice things to have.

4 of 4 people found the following review helpful. Good satire of gabby society By A.J. Sheridan's phrase "school for scandal" is a grand metaphor for the gossipy London society of the late 1770's, and the longevity of the play that bears it as its title attests to its relevance in any place and time. Sheridan captures the inherent drama and humor in the truism that people are always talking about other people behind their backs and uses it as a foundation on which to devise a plot of intrigue. The school's "principals" are Lady Sneerwell and a man named Snake, who like to collect gossip about their neighbors and others in London society; one of their cohorts is the brilliantly ironic character Mrs. Candour, who openly reprehends idle gossip but blithely participates in it anyway. One of their favorite subjects of gossip is the Surface brothers, Joseph and Charles. The popular perception is that Joseph is responsible and respectable, while Charles is a wastrel and a miscreant. The Surface brothers' uncle, Sir Oliver Surface, returns to London after spending many years in India, hears the rumors about his nephews, and decides to verify them for the purpose of choosing an heir between the two. Since he has been gone so long that his nephews would not recognize him, he visits them incognito. Posing as a moneylender to Charles, and as a poor relative to Joseph, he discovers that his nephews are not quite of the natures he has been led to believe.Sheridan employs some typical comedic devices like love triangles and hiding characters, but for the most part this is an inventive play that picks its targets well and hits the bullseye every time. Considering it was written at such a turbulent time in England's history, it's interesting that social satire still managed to break through greater national concerns and be successful and appreciated.

Tales of the Alhambra is a collection of essays, verbal sketches, and stories by Washington Irving. Shortly after completing a biography of Christopher Columbus, Washington Irving traveled from Madrid, where he had been staying, to Granada, Spain. At first sight, he described it as "a most picturesque and beautiful city, situated in one of the loveliest landscapes that I have ever seen." Irving was preparing a book called A Chronicle of the Conquest of Granada, a history of the years 1478–1492, and was continuing his research on the topic. He immediately asked the then-governor of the historic Alhambra Palace as well as the archbishop of Granada for access to the palace, which was granted because of Irving's celebrity status. Aided by a 35-year old guide named Mateo Ximenes, Irving was inspired by his experience to write Tales of the Alhambra. The book combines description, myth and narrations of real historical events, even up through the destruction of some of the palace's towers by the French under Count Sebastiani in 1812, and the further damage caused by an earthquake in 1821. Throughout his trip, Washington filled his notebooks and journals with descriptions and observations though he did not believe his writing would ever do it justice. He wrote, "How unworthy is my scribbling of the place." This edition contains 280+ illustrations by Joseph Pennel.

From AudioFile Written in 1831, this classic weaves timeless tales of intrigue, romance, greed, and hidden treasure amid the grandeur of the Alhambra. The listener's ear must become attuned to the historical language and setting, but this adjustment proves worthwhile. The ancient tales describe palace gardens, towers, subterranean prisons, and escape routes across mountains. Interestingly, the characters give present-day listeners a fresh perspective of the tensions between the Christian and Islamic traditions, and the ties to modern-day events are dramatic. Ralph Cosham gives an excellent even-toned reading with inflections of Spanish and Arabic that add to the stories. Spanish guitar music provides both transitional moments and ambience. A marvelous combination of travelogue, legends and Spain By Bundt Lust "Tales of the Alhambra" was penned by American author Washington Irving ("Rip Van Winkle," "Sleepy Hollow") during a stay at the legendary Alhambra in Granada, Spain. I bought this book after my visit to the Alhambra, and found it to be a fantastic companion to what I had seen and experienced. The Alhambra (and Generalife) is a combination fort/palace/gardens dating from the 13th century, filled with fantastic Arabic architecture (ornate plasterwork, ceramic tiles, sculpted marble fountains and archways), and lots of room for imagining the days of its former greatness, which Irving brings to life most memorably. The book is illustrated with charming and detailed watercolour engravings dating from the same period when the book was written.Irving seamlessly winds legend, history, and a Spanish travelogue of sorts together, and even though the book is over 170 years old, it seems as if it was written yesterday. There are tales of princes, genies, lost and found loves, enchanted treasures, battles, hellish headless horses (does the inspiration seem familiar?), and commentary on the Spanish landscape and nature of the Spaniards that he lives with. Full of bewitching music, the smell of roses and exotic perfumes, firey sunsets, and the ghosts of the past, the book is a sensory treat as well. If you plan on visiting the Alhambra, read this first--it will definitely enhance your experience. If you've already visited, this makes a priceless souvenir, bringing to life once more the stately halls and fragrant gardens.

By Yurij Washington Irving is credited with bringing the glorious history and unbelievable beauty of the Alhambra, in the city of Granada, (the last stronghold of the Moors in the South of Spain) to Western conciousness. After spending a day at the Alhambra last Summer, and passing by the closed apartments that he occupied, I decided to listen to his book while driving one hour each way to work. (any short trips won't work because all of the 'tales' are lengthy)My title says it all. If you are a student of dry history this book is not for you. Only about 20-30 minutes will satisfy your curiosity for the facts. If you enjoy legend and lore this book is it. The bulk of the book tells numerous stories of princes and princeses, kings and soldiers, common laborers such as mule drivers and water carriers, loves found and loves lost, and especially the perrenial human lust for long lost and buried treasure, etc., all told with a wonderous style and feel for southern Spain of the 13-th to 15-th centuries. The factual account of how Columbus finally came to agreement with Isabella and Ferdinand to sign the contract for the three ships, almost by chance in 1492, while the two sovereigns were outside Granada laying the final siege of the Alhambra fortress, is mind blowing. History came 'that close' to having Columbus sail three French ships instead of the Nina, the Pinta and the Santa Maria. If you want just the facts, look elsewhere. But if you are planning a trip to Granada and the Alhambra, definitely pick up this book, along with a second, more fact based, and give a read or listen. I wish I had done that before my trip. It would have given much more life and enjoyment to the place as I walked through the various rooms and towers and gardens that Irving so lovingly describes.

Brings the Alhambra and all it's glorious history to life By Fozia Zaidi I visited Spain in Nov 2002 and was absolutely enchanted by the Nasrid Alhambra palace in Granada. Built in the foothills of the Sierra Nevada mountains, it casts a watchful eye over the inhabitants of the city below. From the exterior, palace is surrounded by an imposing fort structure built of reddish brown stone - clearly meant to give the vision of martial strength to the outsiders. At night from the Albaycin (Old Arab Quarter), the palace is hauntingly beautiful-floodlights on the fort giving it a ghostly appearance. Upon entering the deceptively unassuming palace, a world of breathtakingly beautiful art and architecture slowly overwhelms you.I simply couldn't get enough of this palace and often found myself trying to absorb as much of it's ambiance as possible. I was introduced to Washington Irving's work when I had bought an audioguide at the entrance of the palace. This guide was essentially oral excerpts from his book detailing the history and legends of each room as I walked through them.Upon completing the tour, I then was compelled to buy the book. Reading it, I could see the Alhambra in front of my eyes again. In addition to that, I could imagine its former royal inhabitants as the legends of chivalry, romance and ghosts were told.Washington Irving had the opportunity to live for several months in the Alhambra palace. Back then it was a forgotten Moorish fort in a terrible state of disrepair. His style is very soft and dreamlike, thus one is drawn into his writing as he discovers the legends from the 'guardians' who have taken residence in the palace. This book was truly a delight to read, I highly recommend it to anyone wanting to learn about the Alhambra or as a memoir of one's own visit to the palace.

Before there was Max, there was Mike. A true story much like the touching movie, Navy SEAL Dogs explores the incomparable relationship between trainer and military dog.

From the author of Team Dog, Trident K9 Warriors gave readers an inside look at the Navy SEAL teams' elite K9 warriors-who they are, how they are trained, and the extreme missions they undertake to save lives. From detecting explosives to eliminating the bad guys, these powerful dogs are also some of the smartest and highest skilled working animals on the planet. Mike Ritland's job is to train them.

This special edition re-telling presents the dramatic tale of how Ritland discovered his passion and grew up to become the trainer of the nation's most elite military working dogs. Ritland was a smaller-than-average kid who was often picked-on at school-which led him to spend more time with dogs at a young age. After graduating BUD/S training-the toughest military training in the world-to become a SEAL, he was on combat deployment in Iraq when he saw a military working dog in action and instantly knew he'd found his true calling.

Ritland started his own company to train and supply working and protection dogs for the U.S. Government, Department of Defense, and other clients. He also started the Warrior Dog Foundation to help retired Special Operations dogs live long and happy lives after their service.

Navy SEAL Dogs is the true story of how Mike Ritland grew from a skinny, bullied child, to a member of our nation's most elite SEAL Teams, to the trainer of the world's most highly skilled K9 warriors.

Navy SEAL Dogs: My Tale of Training Canines for Combat, by Mike Ritland, Gary Brozek, Thea Feldman

From Booklist “Whether you’re a canine or a human, if you’ve been a SEAL team member, that means you’re a brother.” Ritland repeatedly visits this sentiment in this moving nonfiction journey that explores the unconditional bond between MWD (military working dog) and handler, and how his love for dogs from an early age through his deployment as an elite SEAL leads him to training these four-legged heroes. Perhaps most moving is how this level of trust plays a vital role in the inspiring and hair-raising stories that he shares about different SEAL handler-and-dog teams during deadly missions. Ritland exemplifies in each scenario that MWDs are as dedicated and valuable as “the men they serve alongside—ready for anything, anywhere, anytime.” An appendix, with a glossary and a “brief history of canines in combat,” closes this high-interest offering. Grades 8-11. --Annie Miller

Review

“Special force SEALs are elite enough, but SEAL dogs are a breed apart. Fascinating . . . About time these heroes got the attention they deserved for a young audience.” ―Kirkus

“Navy SEAL Dogs gives a unique insider account of the training and deployment of these special animals and their handlers. Ritland does a superb job of detailing these dogs in combat, as well as the bond between operator and K-9. Readers are sure to be surprised by the different levels of service and skill that go into making an elite team of two legged and four legged SEALs.” ―Howard Wasdin, former Navy SEAL and New York Times bestselling author of I Am A SEAL Team Six Warrior

“After a stellar career in the Teams, Mike Ritland has gone on to train working K9's for some of the most elite units in the U.S. Special Operations community. These dogs are integrated into Special Operations at all levels of mission planning. They HALO parachute from high altitude, chase enemy squirters, and detect explosive booby traps, to name just a few tasks. If you want to learn about these amazing animals, the sacrifices they've made, and their effectiveness in combat, then read Navy SEAL Dogs.” ―Brandon Webb, former Navy SEAL, New York Times bestselling author of The Red Circle, and Editor-in-Chief SOFREP.com

By Angela Loves Books I read the 'adult' version of this book, and was very impressed with how the author presented the material. I was thrilled when I learned a youth version was being written, so I preordered this book for my son (under the age of 12). He's an avid reader, dog lover and tremendous fan of our Military and Navy SEALs, so it's really right up his alley. We received it from Amazon yesterday, and my son had a hard time putting this down last night (we had an issue with flashlights and reading under the covers), and started reading when he woke up for school this morning.I'm happy he enjoys it - the book is well written, easy for children to comprehend but complex to retain interest for advanced readers, and the topic is interesting. The underlying message is one of dedication and strength, of setting goals and pursuing them, and of the value of being part of a team. My son is also somewhat familiar with the military and our war in Afghanistan (we have a Navy family member who just returned home) and I think this book has helped him get more of an understanding of what we're fighting and why. It's a great teaching tool for parents, and I am happy to be able to use it to help my child understand better the bravery, fortitude and honor of the members of our Armed Services (man and beast alike). We're very grateful for the service of our men, women and pups in uniform.

By Margie Sims I'm thirteen and bought this book at my scholastic book fair in school.I thought it was going to be about Navy Seals and their dogs going on missions, but I was mistaken. The first 2/3 of the book were about how he trained the dogs. there are only about 4 short chapters about their missions, and that is only the first couple of pages of those four chapters. The rest of those four pages are a bout how the dogs and their handlers met. There are a total of about 15 chapters. I was a little disappointed and felt like a wasted $8.00.The writing was magnificent, which made up for the book. -Cory (Margie's son)

0 of 0 people found the following review helpful. Keep 'em coming! By Wynne There was quite a twist in the relationship between Jake and Lucy - that was very complex and full of surprises. The rest of it went along as expected. The action at the island was somewhat predictable. I have to say - I was kinda disappointed that there wasn't some kind of civilization thriving there - it kinda made me feel dark and dreary but that's OK - the book wouldn't be as believable if every thing came out in a Polly Anna finish, right? Can't wait to read more! Mr. Dayle is right about one thing - as an American reading a British authors book - he predicts that we'll have a hard time with some of the words. For me it wasn't the words - it was more the dialog - it seemed almost stiff or at times shallow - but it really did not take away from the plot and the overall feeling of the book. I do recommend this series to anyone looking for "different" in dystopian or apocalyptic type stories.

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. at best. Be advised By spudspud The story is ok, at best. Be advised! The first book is free that's fine for 54 pages then the rest of the books are 2.99 each and still only 54 pages. Not really a good value. I know we aren't buying hamburger here but at that rate a 300 page book is over 16 bucks. It had better be a good read for that price, and believe me this one isn't.

0 of 0 people found the following review helpful. Errors and poor word usage made this unreadable. By J. Spirit I didn't really get into the story because errors put me off. I found the writing unreadable. I can get past a few spelling errors, but I'm not so sure the author did much more than run the manuscript through a spell checker. The wrong words were used which would have been obvious on a simple read-through. Sentences like this from Chapters one and two: 'It remembered him of an overcrowded chicken coop. The man slipped down from his tall bad and his care feet hit the floor.' I'm not going to spend time on a work that is so carelessly presented. I expect the author's other works are given similar poor attention.

Genuine story-line, i find that a lot of couples have to break up because of life priorities. I wish Bryce was a real character; he seems so loving. He wants to move on and live the life he always wanted, but he is afraid of leaving Liam behind. Moreover i found it very interesting, how the author presents homosexuality, as we find a realistic approach to how people react.Overall a great romance with vivid and intense scenes.

The days of unified culture and singular Great Kingdoms are over. In their place, bold new visions are redefining the world of fantasy. Eight authors tackle stories with a focus on diversity, finding heroism outside the familiar boundaries of farmhands and prince's castles. Including original fiction from Nicolas Wilson, Carole McDonnell, Michelle Browne, Mags Carr, William Lenoire, Rachel Savage, Kirstin Pullioff, and Gail Villanueva, this collection goes where GRR Martin and Terry Brooks couldn't.

Holbrook Seven tales of fantasy that explore traditional themes of coming of age, impossible journeys, love, intrigue and betrayal. Each story carefully builds a world for their characters to inhabit. Then there is the uniqueness of the diversity within each story more than just merfolk and fae, but people with color, nonhuman protagonists, older heroes and a diversity of gender romances. My favorites were the stories by Nicolas Wilson, Carole McDonnel, and Rachel Savage because of their deceptions. The anthology was a fast read but an engaging and enjoyable one.

2 of 2 people found the following review helpful. Diversity is Coming By Constance Burris 'm not a big fan of anthologies. They are usually uneven. I'll enjoy a few stories, but then the rest will leave me flat. Diversity is coming had a few stories I didn't enjoy, but I'm still happy I purchased the book.Do I recommend it: YesDiversity: 5Characters: 3 out of Five. Out of the eight stories, 3 were memorable and well written.Story: 4Here is a quick breakdown of the three I enjoyed:"Ayana" by Nicolas Wilson-- a lovely old school story. Written like a fable or fairy tale. It touched on homosexuality and female equality. There was a line towards the end that I absolutely loved spoken by the main character's father who is a playwright: Heroes never die, they simply run out of ink."The Girl in the Dem" by Carole McDonnell- Also written like a fable or fairy tale. It tells the story of a young man falling in love with a mermaid. The story was beautiful and melodramatic while still being readable and relatable. My son would like this story because the bad guy won at the end."Children of Scale" by Rachel Savage- This one featured a kick-ass heroine on a mission with a bit of romance thrown in for good measure. I wish this had been a novel. I actually googled the author hoping to find a longer version, but I there wasn't.

By A Southern Horror Fan This is a refreshing collection of anecdotal stories filled with inspiring protagonists, relevant situations, and lightly colored antagonists. The short stories read smoothly and quickly. This isn't my normal genres of literature but it was a nice surprising break from my normal nightmare tales!

It sits there on the counter, quiet and contemplative. Who knew rice cookers could be so vengeful? Ryu must decide whether to stay or leave The Chef’s kitchen, so he turns to an unlikely ally for help. ~~~ Shhh… Listen To The Gods. The Japanese believe the gods live in all things. Trees, appliances, animals, buildings — they all have a spirit living within them. Maybe, if you listen carefully, you can hear them too. Subscribe to S. J. Rice Cooker Revenge (Kami No Sekai Book 1), by S. J. Pajonas

Review "Featuring an unconventional friendship, RICE COOKER REVENGE is a fun short story with a unique and quirky plot with sympathetic characters you can't help but root for -- even if one is a supposedly inanimate object. The idea of a vengeful rice cooker is fun enough as a concept, but Pajonas' execution and follow-through of the story bring it to life -- almost literally. The story will have readers looking at everything around them differently, wondering about the gods living in them and the spirits inhabiting them." -- Northwest Asian Weekly "SJ Pajonas is one of my favourite authors and when I got the chance to read and review this book, the first in her new short story series, I dived into it as soon as possible. I easily read this in one sitting and it was such a fun book! It left a smile on my face and I am eager for the next book in this series. It is very different from Pajonas her other books, while still being a typical Pajonas book, if that makes sense? It's different in subject, but the style and originality is the same. Rice Cooker Revenge is about a rice cooker and a boy named Ryu who both work for The Chef. Neither of them really like the Chef and they grow friends and devise a plan for revenge. It was a fun and uplifting story. It isn't long, but it's long enough. There's a begin, a problem and an ending and that all without it feeling rushed. It was the perfect length and while I often enjoy books, this one made me happy which is rare. One of the things I like most is that we get not only Ryu's point of view, but also that of the Rice Cooker and the Rice Cooker has it's own personality. After finishing this book I wish I had my own talking Rice Cooker. Ryu isn't in the best situation, he lives with his brother and hardly makes enough money to eat every day. He loves working in the kitchen and I easily related to Ryu as I love cooking myself as well. He works hard, but still doesn't get any recognizion from the Chef, while he has some great ideas and a good work ethic. Oh and this book really made me crave some tempura as they work in a tempura restaurant!I had expected a bit world building about these spirits that live in things, but there wasn't any of that. And to be honest I didn't miss it, for once it was enough just to know that there was a personality in the Rice Cooker and as nothing in the book explained it, it just made sense that it was the way it was without me questioning anything. To conclude: I loved this little short story about the revengeful Rice Cooker. It is fun and put a smile on my face, it's one of those books that made me happy just because it's such a fun book. Both the Rice Cooker and Ryu are interesting characters and I liked following their story and seeing them become friends. It thought it was fun we got the perspective of the Rice Cooker as well. And I can't wait to read the next short stories in this series!" -- Lola's Reviews

From contemporary to sci-fi, it’s all been good. When I heard that this story was about a vengeful rice cooker, I admit to not being sure of what to think. But after seeing that her inspiration was because Japanese people believe that spirits reside in everything, I knew I had to give it a try. Short stories aren’t my usual read, but I knew I wouldn’t regret taking a chance on this. The story was told from the perspective of the rice cooker, and also from Ryu, a trainee of the chef whose kitchen the rice cooker lived in. I found it intriguing to read a story that was partially told from the point of view of an inanimate(or supposedly inanimate) object. Ryu was a sympathetic character, because he was poor and The Chef didn’t treat him well at all. I really wanted things to get better for him, and I liked watching his self confidence grow. The plot followed the rice cooker and Ryu as they got to know one another, and began plotting against the chef. The story was highly original, and quirky. The whole idea of a vengeful rice cooker was fun, and well-executed. Plus, it helps that The Chef was a horrible character, and I was just waiting for him to get what he deserved. With all that said, I’m really glad I read this short story. I don’t make a habit of reading them, but for this series at least, that’s changing! The main characters (and yes, I consider the rice cooker a character) were likable, and the plot was immediately interesting. It was light, unique, and a nice little story. If you’re looking for something different, I highly recommend you check this out! ~Brianna*I received a copy of this book, in exchange for my honest review.*

Pajonas is unique in every possible way. This short story centers around Ryu, who is down about his job and his desire to move on, and a rice cooker. Yes. A rice cooker. The Japanese believe everything has a soul, and this kitchen appliance is no different. Pajonas brings you into the life of the cooker, and as you read, you forget it's an object and not a human being. The friendship that develops between the cooker and Ryu is magical, and more true a relationship than I've read in other stories. It's a quick read - I read it in 30 minutes - and worth every minute.

Rice Cooker By Amazon Customer So I got this book because Number one it was free on kindle books and it was called Rice Cooker's Revenge you can not go wrong with that title. The book short and not overly long I read it during my lunch break at work but it was the perfect length for the story if it had gone on any longer it would have been boring and and any shorter it would not have made sense. So the plot is this overly worked sushi trainee (Who just for the record just makes the rice and washes the dishes and cleans) starts to hear the rice cooker talking. The plot goes on from there alternating narrators from the rice cooker and and the Trainee. I liked the book so much I signed up for the newsletter so check it out.

Review

“Do you like magic? Do you like drugs? Donut-based psychological theories? Video games? Do you like PAPERWORK!? Read this book!”- Ann Leckie, author of Ancillary Justice and winner of the Hugo, Nebula and Arthur C. Clarke Awards“Big ideas, epic thrills, and an unlikely paper-pushing hero you’ll never forget. Just when you think you know what’s next, the book levels up spectacularly.”– John Scott Tynes, author of Delta Green: Strange Authorities“Amazing. I have literally never read a book like this. Read this NOW, if only to be forced to turn the page wondering what the hell Steinmetz is going to come up with next.”– Mur Lafferty, Campbell award-winning “Best New Writer 2013″ and author of The Shambling Guide to New York“Featuring one of the most original magic systems ever devised and a pair of likable, layered protagonists, Flex is a fast-paced, imaginative, and emotionally engaging adventure. The developing friendships and rapport among the characters are portrayed with sensitivity and avoids cliches, and the magical battle sequences are rigorous and filled with ingenious touches that will make gamers and tax lawyers alike grin with joy.”– Ken Liu, winner of the Nebula, Hugo, and World Fantasy Awards“Flex is hot, inventive, and exciting.  A real joyride of a story … a whole new kind of magic and a whole new ballgame. Totally recommended.”– Seanan McGuire, winner of the John W. Campbell Award and Hugo-nominated author“Flex is a breath of magical, drug-addled, emotionally tortured fresh air, with one of the most unique and fascinating main characters I’ve read in ages. In an urban fantasy genre filled with handsome vampires and sassy witches, Ferrett presents us with Paul Tsabo – a Greek insurance adjuster with a prosthetic foot, forced into the half-mad underworld of a reality-bending narcotic to save his daughter from a devastating house fire. With great characters, evocative writing, and boundless creativity, Flex is one of the strongest debut novels I’ve ever seen, and one of my favorite novels of the year.”– Dan Wells, author of I Am Not a Serial Killer“Half part Breaking Bad and half part urban fantasy, Flex is an enthusiastic romp through a world of ingenious magic accessed by geeky, obsessive projection. Tremendously entertaining rule-tinkering and loophole-hunts abound. A terrific read.”– Robert Jackson Bennett, author of City of Stairs“Not since Philip K Dick started toying with reality for fun and profit has there been a novel so enjoyably hallucinatory as Flex.  A heady mix of the surreal and the mundane, it will appeal to fans of video games, donuts, insurance, bureaucracy and crime families.  Oh, and modern day mage wars. Yet for all of its wild plot, this is a story about the tender bond between parents and children, the loyalty of friends and how the odd among us find their places in the world. Ferrett Steinmetz has written a page turner!”– James Patrick Kelly, winner of the Hugo, Nebula and Locus Awards"Like the best magical systems, the magic of Flex is no simple allegory, and the central power too complex to reduce to an easy interpretation."-Ceridwen Christensen, B&N Sci-Fi & Fantasy Blog“A well-paced, sometimes serious, sometimes zany mission to save the world from a mass murderer, with some moral dilemmas mixed in for spice, Flex was an enjoyable read that ended up somewhere close to Breaking Bad by way of Scott Pilgrim versus the World. [4 1/2 stars]”– Speculative Post“Ferrett takes the “people learn how to do magic, will they use it for good or ill?” question and blows it right open, exposing the soft underbelly of a society that first resorts to fear and violence when faced with something they don’t understand.  And I fricken’ loved every word of it.  The magic is weird and soul-crushingly expensive, the characters are fantastic, the stakes are high, and the story is intimate. That my friends, is what I’m always looking for. Ferrett Steinmetz? the guy is a Wordmancer.”– Little Red Reviewer“This book made me miss almost my tube-stop several times… You all should read this book when it comes out!”– Reading the Thing“This world is amazing – just the idea that an obsession can bend reality enough to create magic is a brilliant one…The idea on its own brings something fresh to urban fantasy, and was enough on its own to draw me into the book. Steinmetz brings something new and fresh to the genre.”– Stephanie Gunn, writer for ASIF and judge of the Australian Shadows Awards“Flex was an absolute delight to read, and my only real lament is that I can’t cast some bureaucromancy of my own to conjure up the sequel right friggin’ now”.– Michael Patrick Hicks, author of Convergence and Amazon Breakthrough Novel Award quarterfinalist“The writing is tight, the plot intense, and the story wonderfully creative. Definitely a book for those who enjoy strong visuals and who want a book that inspires creative questioning, introspection, and who like a little wondering about the relation between reality and ourselves. Highly recommended for obsessive folks like myself!”– Bibliotropic“This is one of those books that just hit me perfectly.”– Bookaneer“I loved Flex. All the thumbs up and all the stars checked.”– I, Fat Robot“While there’s a lot of urban fantasy out there, I think Flex might be the one I’ve read that best captures the spirit of the real world. It’s part Breaking Bad, part social commentary and part magical tale with all of the confusion and ambiguity of our times.”– The Royal Library, Hall of the Mountain King“Just don’t make the mistake of thinking this is a shallow, just for thrills book. There is more there than just a surface level action story. The very nature of how abilities manifest, the fact that ‘mancers tend to be lonely people with some sort of problems in their life, the cost of the magic, the balance of flex and flux, and the stigma of being ‘mancer in a society where magic is feared and loathed, all of these things speak at a deeper level if the reader chooses to go there.Flex is raw magic with a deep soul. Highly recommend.”– Tenacious Reader“While the main plot of the story is worth picking up a copy on its own, the underlying concepts that give it a smart and rich conceptual playground for the characters make this book stand above the pack.“Pick this book up, people.  Highly recommended.”– Ideatrash“I have no hesitation in recommending this book.  I don’t have any criticisms.  In fact I can’t conceive of anybody not liking it.  I want more”.– Lynn’s Book Blog“I don’t like using exclamation points, but this book deserves all the exclamation points.  Look, here’s a whole bag!  They are to be placed after the words Flex and awesome whenever they appear! Flex! Awesome! Flex! Awesome! Flex!  You get the idea.“The book’s pacing was just right, the information drip satisfyingly steady but with enough mystery to keep me reading.  I wanted to find out who would do what and how.  I wanted to know who was going to win.  I wanted to know about motivations.  I wanted to see some more video game magic.  I wanted to read it whenever I had time. If I end up writing a list of my ten favorite books from my last five year’s reading, this book is probably going to be on it”.– Book Punks“All and all, it’s one of the more original urban fantasty titles I’ve read in ages and it actually seems to be a stand-alone novel which is always a plus. If you’re looking for a new read, and want something different, give this a look”.– Fantasy Findings“Such a cool concept.  The magic and rules at play make sense and the author doesn’t cheat just to get the characters out of a difficult situation.  The idea of there being consequences to the magic – a balance that must be maintained—that’s very, very cool stuff”.– Eviscerating Pen

Frankly, I have been spoiled with good books so far this year.Flex has a very interesting concept of magic that I hadn't encountered before. The 'mancers in Flex are not officially (or unofficially) trained magicians we grew so accustomed to in other fantasy books. No, each one of them has their own particular flavor of magic or 'mancy. There are illustromancers and musicomancers, videogamemancers and bureaucracymancers. This is a fascinating concept that a person's believes and obsessions define his or her magic and the set of rules within which it works.I also loved the fact that the use of magic is not free in this world. Every time there is a Flex, or the active use of magic, there will be a Flux later, or pushback when the laws of nature reascertain themselves and make the practitioner pay for breaking them. The bigger the Flex, the bigger the subsequent Flux, and it usually hits the things or people the 'mancer cares about the most. So no wonder why 'mancers in this world are mostly solitary and rather unhappy people - everything they love turns to ash between their fingers the more they use their magic. Why don't they stop? You could ask. Well, 'mancy is like a drug, an addiction. And for a lot of these people, the Flex is the only time they are truly happy, they truly feel alive. So they are willing to risk the Flux just to experience this euphoria even for a little while.I loved the fact that all the 'mancers in this book are neither really good or really evil. They are all broken people who found refuge from the ugliness of this world in their magic. They can do horrible things, but even the worst of them can create 'mancy that's absolutely beautiful. Our protagonist, Paul Tsabo, had spent his life hunting down rogue 'mancers and handing them over to the Government to be "refactored" - a horrible procedure where their mind is erased and they become no more than puppets linked to a human controller… and then he became a 'mancer himself. When his daughter is horribly burned in an explosion orchestrated by a 'mancer bound on destroying human civilization, he must take it upon himself to hunt him or her down and make them pay.I liked Paul. He is not the typical action hero. He doesn't rush into danger with guns blazing. He is not good in a fight - too scrawny, not a very good fighter. But he is extremely good with the paperwork. He is the king of forms, the god of bureaucracy. I loved the fact that he stayed true to himself throughout this book. The author didn't make him discover sudden mad fighting skills or extreme marksmanship. Paul remains a paper-pusher, but his papers can rewrite the world. My only gripe with Flex is that the author doesn't give us hardly any background on the origins of this magic. One of the characters attributes the surge of 'mancers to the birth of the Internet and the ever growing list of obsessions people have. Yet the author also hits that 'mancers existed even in the previous centuries, way before the invention of the Internet. In fact, a full on magical battle during World War II opened a huge broach over Europe and transformed the whole continent in to a smoldering landscape full of demons. It's implied that 'mancers started being hunted down and "refactored" after that incident, but the author doesn't explain how it was before that. How did 'mancers deal with their Flux? How did society deal with them? I would have loved to have a bit more details. I would also have loved to see more of that strange world than just New York. Hopefully, the author will expand his universe in the next book. But even as it stands, Flex is a definite must read. It's well written and fast paced, and the story is really interesting.PS. I received an advanced copy of this book via NetGalley.

The book's greatest achievement is the congruency between its worldbuilding and its character arcs. The magic system, in which a person's obsessions allow them to twist the laws of probability (which eventually builds up a reservoir of bad luck that blows back upon them in disastrous ways), is amazing, and it accomplishes the rare feat of making it actually fun to see people cast spells, because: a) you wonder how they're going to adapt their particular obsession (i.e. w/ video games or w/ bureaucracy) to the given situation; and b) you know that even if their magic is successful, something terrible will eventually happen to them. The nature of the magic system makes it very easy to dramatize the main character's primary conflict, which is that if he does nothing, then he'll experience no bad luck, but he'll also be at the mercy of the universe, whereas if he acts, then he can get his way, but he also risks disaster. It's a very human story: the same story that we all face every single day. But in real life it plays out in subtle and far-reaching way that are maybe hard to understand, whereas in this book, the story plays out with explosions. Still, at its core, this story is very personal and relatable and human. It's about a guy who maybe wants to do good, but who mostly wants to patch his family together and live peacefully and ensure a happy & safe life for his daughter. And that's something I've seen rarely enough in fantasy novels that I thought it was really refreshing. Also, the book is dense and complex. Ferrett is a good student of humanity, and many of the characters, institutions, and situations in the book are startlingly complex. For instance, the main character's employer, Samaritan Mutual, is an evil corporation, but, unlike most evil corporations in fiction, it's a startlingly amorphous and petty evil. There's no evil CEO who forces it to be evil: instead, selfishness and thoughtlessness is bred right down into its bones. The corporation is evil not because of any one person, but because at every level people are rewarded for ignoring people who need help. Anyway, I could go on, but I won't. This one is one of the better fantasy novels I've read in the last five years, and I wouldn't be at all surprised if it blew up and became a best-seller or an award-winner.

By Michael Hicks [Note: I received an advanced reader’s copy of this title from the publisher, via NetGalley, for review.]Flex is a novel that grabbed me right off the bat, from its evocative cover art to the intense magic-as-a-drug fueled prologue, and sucked me in with Paul’s struggles to cope with and help his tragically burned daughter.Ferrett Steinmetz is able to quickly construct a familiar world, one where not only is magic real and rightfully dangerous, but which can also be synthesized into a drug called Flex. Needless to say, magic is illegal, with its wielders forced into military service. In the book’s opening pages, Paul learns that he is gifted with ‘mancy, but that it’s use has very real, very serious repercussions. Magic flexes the universe, but that’s not something to simply toy around with because the universe flexes back. And while magic may break the physics that shape our world, it remains true that for every action there is an equal and opposite reaction. And karma, well, she’s a bitch. After learning that a terrorist named Anathema, who uses the Flex blowback to target her victims, is responsible for nearly killing his daughter, and that the insurance company, who Paul works for, is refusing to cover her treatments, Paul goes into the Flex making business. This is where Steinmetz earns his Breaking Bad comparison, and it’s well-earned. If you’re going to put a magical spin on recent pop culture phenomena, you could do a lot worse than look to that drug dealing drama for inspiration. One thing that I really appreciated in this title, though, is just how mundane it can be, and that really helps to ground the story. For instance, although magic is dangerous, it’s not exactly sexy. Paul’s powers stem from his love of bureaucracy and filing paperwork, and he’s able to tap into top-secret CIA documents and police reports by magically filing requisition forms. His partner-in-crime, Valentine, is a gamemancer – she’s a video game addict, and her love of Wii and 3DS fuels her magical abilities, along with some healthy inspiration from the Metal Gear Solid series. It helps, too, that Steinmetz casts his characters are real people, first and foremost. These aren’t part-time models who strut around on the catwalk and then fight crime at night. Paul’s a paper-pusher for an insurance company. An ex-cop, he lost a foot in the line of duty and has a robotic prosthetic that can be a bit ungainly. Valentine is a wonderfully natural heroine, a bit chubby, a bit geeky, a bit sarcastic, and she adopts Paul’s mission as her own out of sincere compassion. They make for a dynamic team, and their relationship shows wonderful growth.I have to give Steinmetz a lot of credit for inserting as much realism and humanity into the story as he does, and this is a large part of the reason for why the book works as well as it does. It’s clear that a lot of effort went into making the fantastic as relatable as possible, and there’s a terrific amount of world building constructed around the disruption that magic, and its rules, brings to the table. Flex was an absolute delight to read, and my only real lament is that I can’t cast some bureaucromancy of my own to conjure up the sequel right friggin’ now.
