About the Author Born in rural England, Linda, learned to ride a pony before she could ride a two wheel bicycle, competed at county level shows in England with show ponies and hunters. Linda knew she wanted to earn her living in the horse industry so she completed the formal training to become a B.H.S.A.I, and went on to train other equine competitors and riders. She immigrated to Canada from England almost 20 years ago, and felt she would like a change of career path so Linda went back to school to learn the art and science of photography. With the intention of using her extensive equestrian background and her newly acquired skills, to earn a living photographing horses This new direction took her to equine events and farms throughout Alberta over the past 20 years she has photographed thousands of horses in all kinds of disciplines and situations. Linda’s photographic contribution to preserving Alberta’s Equine Heritage was acknowledged by her majesty the Queen of England. This extensive body of work is now housed in the Provincial Archive Museum and is known as “The Horses of Alberta” exhibit. Beware of self-published books. They often have absolutely NO copy editing or proofreading. I'd like to gently suggest that Linda find a friend with a degree in English (or something like that) and have them go through the book and fix the spelling, punctuation, and grammar. While she's at it, someone who has a slight clue about typography could make her fonts consistent, and fix the VERY odd and distracting line breaks. I kept wondering if this book was supposed to be a poem or something. There are lovely ideas and interesting thoughts in here that an educated person would miss, because the presentation is so unprofessional.I'm actually really surprised that no one pointed this out before the author sent the book to the company that prints it.Her friends let her down.Linda, send me the Word file and I'll fix it for you. I found an average of 6 errors per page before I gave up.Example: the book ends with a "Final Though" -- come on, someone could have mentioned that it should be "thought."

By Sue Paulson From the first page, I was captivated with the lovely photographs and such fascinating tidbits of information, told in a friendly and engaging way. Who knew all this about horses? If you own a horse, this book is a must-read. If you're thinking about owning a horse - read this book first! But even if, like me, you're happiest in your armchair, this provocative glimpse into the magical world of horses will have you absorbed in each page right till the end - and leave you wanting more. I know I'll never look at horses the same way again!

Even my non-horsey husband was fascinated by Linda's photos of her fun experiments with horses, the wild Alberta herds and how horses communicate at work and play. Linda asks and answers a dazzling array of questions, providing lots of information in a quick-read format. Her love of these spirited creatures is evident on every page. Move over Bird-watchers and make room for the Horse Watchers!

To help those old school RPG fans out there: By WDG This book is akin to buying a hard-bound expanded copy of Ultima V's "Book of Lore" on PC (right down the the B&W ink line drawings in the Bestiary section). As a kid, this is the book you would read from back of the car on the trip home from the computer store. If you are a collector of PC RPGs and want extra materials to go on the shelf with your physical copy of the game, go right on ahead.It would be helpful if this listing put it's line: "Please note, this is not a strategy guide." in BOLD and at the top of the description INSTEAD of at the bottom.

Perez If you loved poring over D&D Campaign Setting Books like Forgotten Realms from 3rd Edition, then this book should be in your collection. If not, then you need to either be obsessed with Pillars of Eternity or a fan of world building. This book covers details of Eora, Pillars of Eternity's world, and it gets really in depth. You'll get a chapter on the pantheon of gods which has a nice asymmetry to it (there are 3 gods involved with death). There is also a chapter on souls and animancy, something unique to Eora, where they describe the reincarnation of all kith and the different viewpoints on it. The chapter detailing the various regions and their populations and other statistics looks good but I only skimmed it. There is a chapter on races which details sub-races and their locations as well as going into their migration patterns. Then there are two chapters on history, one older history, one more recent. Finally there is a bestiary which has some nice illustrations (though there are excellent pieces of art throughout).Overall I have not yet read the entire thing but I am enthralled and pleased with this piece of the puzzle. It could definitely be used as an inspiration for a pen-and-paper campaign in Eora, though you would need an existing system since there are no statistics listed (just fluff, no crunch). I'm very excited to play the game tomorrow and this has been a nice resource to thumb through in anticipation of the game's release!

Nice: but badly needs a marker ribbon By Usually Quiet Nicely put together and attractive, but so far I've found the most useful information is duplicated in other sources.Also, (and this pertains to both the Collector's Edition Guide and the Guidebook): they both badly a need quality built-in ribbon marker, to complete their usefulness and their look. I'm sure you considered it: you just made the wrong decision about it. As it is, I've had to make my own.

It would probably be better to find a copy (used) of the final, fourth edition.

Excellent Overview of the Presocratic Philosophy By Dragos Bucurenci It is probably the best work on Presocratic philosophers including their biographies, found fragments and commentary. Burnet, who is best known for his translation of Plato's works (the Platonis Opera Oxoniensis), was one of the greatest specialists in ancient philosophy and this can be seen by the accuracy of the information this book offers. However, it is not one of those professional studies that bore the reader and don't manage to transmit any information. Apart from some newly (XXth century) acquired information in the field (that may have occurred since Burnet wrote this book), "Early Greek Philosophers" offers to the amateur reader the best overview on Presocratic Philosophy.

I found Burnet accessible for beginners, a good thing By AlexBooksAndCDs For those who are considering this book, I found it accessible to beginners, because it was the *first* book on the Presocratics I read, and I got through it fine (with no prior Greek Philosophy instruction). Not as "strenuous" as Kirk & Raven which had quotes imbedded in footnotes etc. making it more of a "scholarly" thing (but also excellent nonetheless).

These stories are light and humorous with just enough violence to keep them interesting but not enough to put you off, and just enough sensuality to keep you wanting more.

Temple of the Long-Winded Sermons By Book Fiend While I am an avid fan of Terry Goodkind and I await each book with some anticipation, I must admit that this book was a little...windy (forgive the pun, please). The beginning was a little slow, and was it just me or did anyone figure who the sicko was w/in the first 5 lines of the first murder scene? The evidence was placed in this person's belongings too soon and the excuse they made was a little pathetic. Couldn't the evidence have shown up later in the book, just to sort of throw the reader off, and delay the eye-rolls? Anyway, there were also sappy love scenes that sort of made me want to put the book down. I understand Goodkind may have been trying to evoke some sympathy for Richard and Kahlan's frustrating (and overly drawn out) wait to complete and consummate their love, but the stolen-kiss scenes sort of dripped with sap. Also, Richard's dealings with Kahlan and with the lords and delegates from different countries were a little drawn out and preachy. His long philisophical explanations, and Goodkind's seeming need to continuously refer us to Richard's "raking raptor gaze" and Kahlan's "sparkling green eyes" and tight, white, regal Confessor's dress, get repetitive and you end up skipping large chunks of the dialogue. The stubbornness of the main characters will at times frustrate you, and after all the waiting and yearning and restraint the main duo has endured, how could the writer snatch away the sanctity of their first union by turning it into such a horrid experience? It was so terrible, it worked. That part just killed me... But after all this passes, the book begins to pick up and roll with the formula that made Goodkind's first book such a riveting story. He did a good job at evoking irritation and murderous inclinations towards a new character, Nadine. There are parts that draw out giggles and appreciation for the humorous and angry sides of Richard's loving personality and seemingly deep well of patience with stupid or insipid characters. And again, I must stress that, for the typical female, Nadine will boil your blood. The scenes involving the sick children and some of the characters close to Richard dying, were just enough to make me misty-eyed (I am a sucker for well-described death scenes). It also made you appreciate the love, devotion, and trust in the developing relationship between the Mord-Sith (mostly Cara and Berdine) and Richard. The overall story is good and you're able to forgive some of the flaws in this book. Richard is still one of the best characters developed in any science fiction I ever read. Goodkind makes him a handsome, strong, sensible, likeable, and intelligent hero, but at the same time he allows Richard to make mistakes, admit to them, and learn from his mistakes, without making apologies and enemies. In other words, a man that will never exist in real life.

I have purchased all of the preceding books on audio cd and listen to them on the way to and from work everyday. I have read the whole series as well. When I first started listening to this cd, I couldn't figure out who Kylin was. I finally released it was Dick Hills version of how to pronounce Kalan's name. This my be trivial to some people but it really annoys the crapp out of me. I would think that someone would of picked up on the fact that the pronunciation of a main character's name was completely different in this version.

By Elyon What began as an interesting fantasy in "Wizard's First Rule" and "Stone of Tears" has begun to devolve into episodic serialization and somewhat sophomoric heroic posturing. To be honest, I never felt this series to be among the best, an equal to Tolkein's "Lord of the Rings," Donaldson's "Chronicles of Thomas Covenant," William's "Memory, Sorrow, and Thorn," or Martin's or Jordan's ongoing series. There has always been the sense of Goodkind writing in the shadow of Jordan for reasons that are obvious, and, regardless of arguments over "The Wheel of Time's" flaws, the "Sword of Truth" series by Goodkind has never approached the scale of Jordan's work, and appears now to be flagging in both energy and focus.What began in "Wizard's First Rule" as a fantasy epic with a solid story line and much original content, despite a few obvious broad borrowings from past writer's, including Jordan, has become, with this book, a series of adventures only loosely connected to the grand conceptual story promised by the first book. The original premise presented in "Wizard's First Rule" is now forming the excuse for 800 page excursions into secondary stories that exist in large part separate from the larger struggle that is the premise behind this series. As a stand-alone, this book is unsuccessful, and succeeds only because it is propped by the previous works. Nor does it advance the earlier story established by those books. Instead, if you examine the plot closely, it revisits a lot of old ground. The thread of Goodkind's legend has begun to become unravelled.A further problem has begun to manifest itself in his characters: They have begun to become stereotypes of themselves. They are far too full of their roles, and much of their response to situations becomes a form of posturing, and therefore predictable. The more I saw of Richard and Kahlan, the less sympathetic they became. The overall population in this series have become caricatures of themselves, and if one looks closely, one does not really care for what one finds.In closing, I wish to address a couple issues that crop up repeatedly in reviews of this work, as well as other fantasy fiction:1. I weary of all the reverent comparisons to Tolkein. Let's judge a work based upon it's own merits, not some "mythic" comparison to a work that is considered by many to be the founding work of a genre, and therefore flawless. This ignores not only certain weaknesses in Tolkein's writing ability, but the strengths of writers that have followed. If "Lord of the Rings" is the ultimate achievement in fantasy fiction, why are we reading further?2. The accusation of derivative work: It's all, to one degree or another derivative. There is, perhaps, no more derivative work in fantasy than Tolkein; one only need read the Norse or Germanic sagas, or watch Wagner's "Ring Cycle" to realize how closely Tolkein copied these works. So to those who cry foul when they perceive similarities between contemporary authors and Tolkein, I say know what of you speak: Likely you've never even heard of E.R.Eddison.

The book was published posthumously in 1919, and contains some of the last stories he wrote before his death. They are all tales of love, family, or friendship, told against the background of Hawaiian history, customs, and lore. Often they focus on the interaction between two dichotomous characters--one representing the old, authentic ways of Hawaiian life; the other representing the new, modern Hawaii under the "civilizing" influence of white colonization. London compares and contrasts these two sides of island life without playing favorites.The best story in the book is "Shin-Bones," in which a modern, Oxford-educated Hawaiian prince recalls a life-changing adventure from his youth. To satisfy his superstitious mother's obsession with bone collecting, he accompanied an aged servant on a perilous quest to recover the hidden remains of his ancestors. In a story of similar subject matter, "The Bones of Kahekili," a wealthy, white rancher persuades his elderly servant to reveal the whereabouts of the remains of an old Hawaiian chieftain and the mysterious events surrounding his burial. "The Tears of Ah Kim" tells the story of a Chinese grocer in Honolulu who incurs the wrath of his aged mother when he reveals his intention to marry a young widow. Mother feels the bride-to-be is too modern, too liberal, and too westernized for her son. In "The Water Baby," an educated young Hawaiian man is treated to a folk tale while he accompanies a poor, elderly fisherman on a squid hunt. "The Kanaka Surf," about a love triangle in Waikiki, is easily the worst story in the book. Modern romance was never London's strong suit.The stories in this collection exemplify London's mature writing style, for better or for worse. Over the course of his career, London's skill as a writer developed immensely. He was a much more proficient wordsmith at the end of his career than he was when he started. As he gained confidence and facility in his writing, his plots became more complex, his characters more fully realized, and his insight into human psychology more subtle and nuanced. Yet, much of his later work lacks the forceful directness and simple, crowd-pleasing fun of his earlier work. In his later years, he developed an annoying tendency to riddle his stories with unnecessary tangential digressions. By throwing in everything but the kitchen sink, he comes across as overly concerned with showing off his erudition and wit at the expense of a satisfying plot. In the stories included here, for example, each character is introduced with a detailed genealogical pedigree. Places casually mentioned in conversation are almost invariably accompanied by a superfluous side story of "Remember what happened there?" At times the dialogue resembles two people reading the index of a Hawaiian atlas. All the local color and atmosphere that London heaps into these tales adds authenticity to the setting but hinders the narrative momentum. The stories in this collection are all rather long, and most seem overloaded with gratuitous filler.On the Makaloa Mat is a good collection of stories, but not one of London's best. As far as his Hawaiian stories go, his earlier collection The House of Pride and Other Stories is better overall. Nevertheless, a few of the gems included here make this book necessary reading for true fans of London.

Beauty and drama By Guillermo Maynez Jack London travelled extensively through the Southern Seas, living exciting but often frightening adventures that he later reflected on his short stories. London, a troubled adventurer who committed suicide, had a special sensibility to perceive, mix and express the juxtaposure of beauty and horror which reigned in non- or semi-civilized islands of the South Pacific. Frequently, his tales talk about the brutal confrontation between the white people and the aborigines, sometimes taking one side, sometimes the other, but most often simply depicting the sad consequences of the relationship. One exception to this is the tale that gives its name to this collection: "On the Makaloa Mat" is an extremely beautiful story about two Hawaiian sisters of mixed descent (3/4 white, 1/4 indigenous), from a very wealthy and noble family. Bella, the elder sister, tells the story of her one and only love, of course an unfortunate one. The story abounds in depictions of the lush landscapes of the Hawaiian islands, and of the strange social life of mid-XIX century. It is tragic but sweet, and I'd be surprised if someone hated it. Other tales are not sweet at all, like "The Chinago", about the absurd execution of a Chinese laborer; "The Terrible Solomon Islands", about a cruel joke played on a naïve Englishman by brutal colonists; "Koolua the leper", a short but epic story about man's indomitable lust for freedom, even in the most adverse and tragic circumstances; and "The inevitable white man", a bloody, horrific and dark tale of adventures.The stories abound with murders, blood and cruelness, but they're never cheap or vulgar. In fact, I give them five stars because I consider them to be masterpieces of storytelling. London has no mercy, but beneath the surface his characters are full of life, that plenty, wild life embedded in the white men who conquered the world, and the aborigines which suffered the conquest. Extremely recommended.

I love this book By Desiree Valenzuela like many of us, I grew up on Jack London's animal stories- "White Fang", "The Call of the Wild" etc. I didn't know until all these years later that he had such a huge, juicy, wonderful body of work. That he was in fact a Master of the short story. This book was so terrific, it's hard to believe it was *free*. Highly recommended.

A shadow book is my writing playground, where my pen oscillates high and low on a ten-year-old boy's red-painted steel swing set. And on the way back down to where the earth rushes up to meet me, story pieces come together and a plot is ended. I suppose my imagination has always resided on this playground.A shadow book is a place where I can experiment. From some of this playful shorter writing, a greater work might spring forth, as in the case of the story "Cosmo's Tale." I came to realize that Trish, Melody, and Cristee had more to tell beyond Esther's own troubles. Each character sat next to me on that playground's swing set, chatting, laughing, and daring an inspiring sun to shut out its light. These characters will tell their own stories in another book completed at a later date.But I shouldn't forget to mention "CRDL" or "Christmas Never Snows." By JenacideByBibliophile Disclaimer: This book was sent to me by the author, M. Duda, for an honest review. Okay my readers, I know you have heard this one a MILLION times but I must repeat it again: Don’t judge a book by its cover. This is NOT a children’s book, it is actually quite far from it. When M. Duda asked if I could review this book for him, I of course had to clarify what genre it fell into because the cover is pretty misleading. After reading the short stories that were contained in A Cat Will Play, I have to say that the cover is actually quite fitting for the underlining messages that are sealed inside this one of a kind book. This is something VERY different from what you have ever read, and it has a horrifically beautiful feeling that is captured in every word and detail.A Cat Will Play contains three short stories, all of which showcase different aspects of human nature. The first shorts story, CRDL, gives the reader an insight into a post-apocalyptic world that is riddled with poverty, unclean air, and an abundance of dead bodies that are used to create cooking fuel for children. Christmas Never Snows is about a woman who has passed away, but remains in the house she grew up in as a child. With the inability to leave her home, due to the guilt of feeling responsible for her mother’s death, her father comes back to help assist her into the afterlife. In Cosmo’s Tale, a young girl struggles with finding a crowd to fit into while also trying to find answers to why things are the way they are in the world.These three short stories are amazing! The style of writing that M. Duda uses in his writing is highly descriptive and detailed. The imagery brings the writer right into each story and leaves you feeling a bit strange about the world. I personally loved the last short story, Cosmo’s tale, which centered on a fourteen-year-old girl who is longing to find adventure but looks in the wrong places. It captures adolescence perfectly in the way that each awkward character is portrayed, as well as showing that each person has their own struggles that they are hiding. Not only does the main character come to realize that not everything is what it seems, but she starts to really appreciate what she has been dealt with in life. Christmas Never Snows explains to the reader about forgiveness and accepting mistakes that have been made. Basically, one can never truly rest until they accept the things that they cannot change.Each short story in this book reveals a few small life lessons that everyone should be aware of, but the author delivers each lesson in an almost blatant yet cryptic way. I would highly recommend this book to any reader, no matter what genre you are most interested in. The writing is fantastic, and you will get sucked into the characters and situations as soon as you read the first page. I am so glad I read this book, and I cannot wait to go back and read book one.

0 of 0 people found the following review helpful. One of these three stories is a home run By Sherman Morrison I downloaded this book from the Story Cartel website. It contains three short stories. The first, titled CRDL, is a brief glimpse into a post-apocalyptic world in which society does incredibly twisted things in order to survive. It shows how anything can be rationalized when survival is at stake. Talk about desperate times calling for desperate measures! My concern with the writing in the first story is how there are too many characters appearing rapid-fire one after the other. The reader can't quite make any concrete sense out of it. Perhaps that was the intention. If so, then it's not a style that pleases me. The second story, Christmas Never Snows, was more interesting to me. A father from the afterlife comes back to try and convince the ghost of his daughter that it's time to move on. That part of the story is great, but the people who show up to the home the daughter haunts are just too depressingly dysfunctional, weird, and sick without any rhyme or reason (again, something that just doesn't appeal to my taste). The third story is by far the best -- Cosmo's Tale -- about an eighth grade girl trying figure out how she wants to be and who she wants to hang out with. Most of it is thoroughly, depressingly bleak, and very accurately captures the essence of middle school as many have experienced it. I was particularly heartened by the increasingly better choices the protagonist made at the end of the story, because that's what suits my taste best. I'm good with bleak as long as there's some hope thrown in!

By Carol Motycka I really enjoyed Duda's first book and was excited to see a second book had been written. Duda's characters are fascinating and the stories leave you eager for more. I really enjoy psychological horror and the paranormal so these books are right up my alley! All I can say is I can't wait for another book and I hope there is a full novel soon!

Brodham looked over his notes, "...escaped." "Right." "To warn us that Nikola Tesla is going to invade our planet with an 'army of robots,' in your words." "No, not robots," the man sighed wearily. "Nanophrenological clones. They just sort of look like robots. Now are you ready to start taking me seriously?" "Why would his own son have to escape?" "Let's just say we don't see eye-to-eye on some things." "Like the destruction of Earth." "That'd be the main thing, yeah. "Alright, that's enough for now. We'll hold you in a cell for a few days until we can get some background information. In the meantime, if you ever feel you'd like to change your story, just ask to see me." Brodham stood and signaled to the door. It buzzed and then clicked open to allow two burly men through. Each one cradled an M4 beneath his shoulder. "You're making a mistake." The man's voice wasn't accusing, simply matter-of-fact, as if he'd already realized nobody would believe him. It also sounded sad. "I'm sure I am." Brodham turned to the door and nodded a greeting to one of the armed guards. They'd worked a field assignment several months previously. James, or Gerry, maybe. Brodham tried to remember, came up only with a "Juh" sound. Two kids, one in a wheel chair. Some disease. Nice guy. The guard smiled back, and the base of his throat exploded.

0 of 0 people found the following review helpful. Tesla's Son is a Bad-Ass! By Bookaholic Nikola Tesla makes a great subject for fiction. Was he a humanitarian or just a mad scientist? I wrote a novel about him myself, and am always looking to see how other writers have portrayed him in fiction. The first thing readers should know about Son of Tesla is that this is Book One of a series and that it does leave you hanging and wanting the rest! The second thing to be aware of is this: if you want to read about the heroic Nikola...read something else. Nikola Tesla is the unadulterated Bad Guy in this story. The hero is his son, Petar Tesla. It seems that in 1899 Nikola Tesla accidentally opened a dimensional rupture, transporting to a planet called Volos. I'm not sure what happened to him, but somehow the idealistic inventor became corrupted and now he is breeding killer creatures and plotting Earth's takeover. Petar has defied his father and come to earth to stop him. Petar is over 100 years old, but he looks like a handsome 25-year old. He's got bad-ass fighting skills and fingers that shoot electric bolts—“the advantages of being a Tesla!” From there it is pretty much nonstop action: car chases, kidnapping, home invasion, battles, bloodthirsty slaughter. A normal suburban boy gets caught up in the conflict, and a rogue general wants his piece of the pie. I can certainly see this novel as a movie, because it has you on the edge of your seat. It's not a nice restful read though. The violence and relentless pace were a bit much for me. Yet I must say the writer is very good at what he does. The prose, characterization and imagery are excellently done. In his afterward, the author apologizes for making Nikola Tesla a villain. Yeah, I can't say I agree with his characterization of Tesla as a world-enslaving tyrant. I sure hope he was just being controlled by an evil alien and that he gets redeemed at the end. The author says that Tesla will do even more evil things in the next book. I might skip it.

For a time, he worked alongside Thomas Edison. In the Sci-Fi novel, “Son of Tesla,” Nikola is more or less the same person, but he’s still alive, doing the mad scientist thing on the planet Volos, grooming an army of clones, and planning to take over the Earth. And the only one with the power and knowledge to save the world is Nikola’s son, Petar. If you think this sounds far-fetched, you’d be right, and yet Eli Nixon pulls it off smoothly. It’s easy to agree with CIA Special Agent Bill Brodham; Petar doesn’t sound crazy. His facts are consistent and his scientific terminology and theories seem legitimate. But Petar enters CIA headquarters on our Earth, the real one that’s full of skeptics, and he can’t convince the ones who matter that the end of the world is imminent.The Koschei, the practically invincible killer clones, are the game changes. They initiate an action-packed race to kill or capture Petar and his companion Jem, a teenager who’s bound by his unfortunate fate to Petar’s cause. The CIA and U.S. Army join the adventure for damage control, and at times there’s more to it than that. Those who have power, those in danger of losing it, will do whatever it takes to keep that from happening.“Son of Tesla” is Science Fiction at its purest. There is no trendy deviation into the land mixed genres. Many diehard fans would appreciate that. All of the story elements–the characters, each organization they represent, and every play they make–are woven together with a complexity that is both impressive and digestible. Although the action scenes were a little drawn out for me, I found the backstories and quieter moments of reflection fairly satisfying for a Sci-Fi piece. But there was room for more depth. And the story could have benefitted from a strong female or two, or any woman, for that matter, in a leading role and/or a position of authority. I’m hoping for better female representation in the sequel.

About the Author Francis Scott Fitzgerald was born in St. Paul, Minnesota in 1896, the son of a salesman, and namesake of his distant relative, Francis Scott Key. While attending Princeton University, he wrote a novel that a Scribner’s editor thought good enough to publish, if Fitzgerald would revise it. Fitzgerald, however, was in academic trouble and left school to join the army. Stationed in Alabama, he met and proposed marriage to Zelda Sayre, who refused to marry him until his rewritten novel, This Side of Paradise, made him an irresistible success. Two years later, the Fitzgeralds were leading a furious, booze-fueled social life, and his story collection of 1922, Tales of the Jazz Age, gave the era its name. In 1925, while sojourning in France—where he befriended Ernest Hemingway—he wrote The Great Gatsby. But his relationship with Zelda grew destructive, and by 1932 she was in a mental institution and he had descended into alcoholism. Fitzgerald moved to Hollywood to work as a scriptwriter, and died there of a heart attack in 1940.

Embryonic Talent By Fred Bubbers In the spring of 1919, the world was recovering from the catastrophe of World War I, which had ended with an armistice in November of 1918. The Paris Peace Conference had begun in January of 1919 which would result in the signing of the Treaty of Versailles in June. The economic inequities of the Gilded Age had been exacerbated by the war, but the working class soldiers, who had borne the heaviest burden, were returning home and were no longer complacent. The war had taken its toll on the social fabric of society. There had been a communist revolution in Russia and there was unrest everywhere else in the world including the United States. Socialists, Communists, and Anarchists were agitating against the status quo in cities across the United States. In April, at least thirty bombs had been sent by mail to a cross-section of prominent public figures - politicians, businessmen, and newspaper editors - by anarchists. The bombs were intended to explode on May 1, the official day of international solidarity for the Socialist and Communist movements. Several of them were detected early and because of their distinctive packaging, the Postal Service was able to recover the rest of them before they had reached their intended targets.When May 1st came, the worst riot was in Cleveland, but there were demonstrations in other cities as well, New York included. F. Scott Fitzgerald was there to witness the mayhem. The Armistice had ended his military service without him ever being sent to fight and he was now struggling to make a living in the advertising business. Unlike his Princeton classmates, he was not among the sons of wealth who attended college in those days and he had to earn a living. Throughout his life, he had moved among that privileged class but he was not a member. His father had been a failed businessman. His mother had some small inherited wealth that kept him in private schools and in all the right social circles and had finally gotten him to Princeton, but he now had to work for a living. Perhaps because of that experience and his upbringing among that social class, he wasn't particularly suited to working for a living. It was that lack of prospects that had prompted his fiancé to break off their engagement until he could prove he had the means to support her. He wasn't making it in advertising and things didn't look good for him.In the fall and winter of 1919, F. Scott Fitzgerald was anxiously awaiting the publication of his first novel, This Side of Paradise. The publishing contract with Scribner's had come in just the nick of time for Fitzgerald. Earlier in that year he had tried his hand in the advertising business and met with failure. Unable to prove that he could support his fiancé, Zelda Sayre of Montgomery Alabama whom he had met when he was a soldier, the engagement had been broken off. With the offering of a publishing contract by Scribner's that fall, Fitzgerald could now claim to be a professional writer and the engagement was back on. No matter how badly things turned out for Scott and Zelda later on, at that moment in time, he had a book coming out and had won the heart of the love of his life. Things were looking up. It had to be the most exciting and optimistic time of his life.With Fitzgerald, however, happiness and satisfaction never came easy. He was always his own worst critic not only of his writing but of his own self-worth, and he always felt as though he was living on the edge of failure and tragedy was always looking over his shoulder. To both his credit and to his later downfall, he embraced his self-doubt and forged it into art. In one of his first efforts as a fulltime writer, he wrote the most ambitious work of his early career, the novella May Day, inspired by his fears of failure and by the riotous events that he witnessed earlier in that year in New York City.In retrospect, This Side of Paradise, isn't very good, even for a first novel. Today, it serves as a testament to Max Perkins' judgment and intuition in identifying literary talent and to Scribner's willingness to invest and nurture a young writer. This Side of Paradise was successful and made Fitzgerald famous, but today it serves mainly as a biographical curiosity; the investment that Scribner's made in the young Fitzgerald wouldn't pay off for the publisher until long after both Fitzgerald and Perkins had died.May Day serves as a sort of missing link between the young embryonic talent first noticed by Perkins and the accomplished novelist he would become. We can see him experimenting with naturalism as well as notice prototypes for the characters and themes of his later work: the poor outsider among the wealthy and privileged, the beautiful but shallow heroine, the ruthless and selfish rich. The main character's financial failure parallels Fitzgerald's failure in advertising as well as the heroin's rejection parallels Zelda's initial rejection. The novella also contains the some of th most pointed social and political statements that Fitzgerald ever committed to paper. His writing was very much "in the moment" and influenced by his personal circumstances, but it foreshadowed the riotous decade that would follow. This novella and his masterpiece "Babylon Revisited" serve as bookends to the 1920's.

Intriguing By Nicola Mansfield Reason for Reading: I've decided to try the publisher's club for 6 months and plan to read the two selections, the month following their arrival. Hence this is my January read.I've read several of Fitzgerald's novels and short stories and find him an interesting author. This title was new for me and I looked forward to reading it. The story is explained as a sample of American class systems but I'm not sure I agree with that. Class structure doesn't really exist in America the same way it does in Britain which I am more familiar with, where your class was a birthright. Americans earned there way to their class level but then there was (and still is) the problem of the youth, the ones who didn't earn their way into the social position they find themselves.Anyway this story revolves around several groups of people from different walks of life who all ultimately intermingle one fateful May Day evening and the reader is thrown into their mindsets, thoughts and actions when given the freedom to act of their own free will. We also see how the end of WWI and the return to 'civilization' has affected these people. The young college men who left to fight the war, some come back the same, others changed. Some still belong to their social status, others have lost it and the main character of this story is a young man who has lost his money, his status, his morals and his self-respect. He has gotten himself in desperate trouble with a lady (what exactly is not mentioned, but it is not hard to imagine) The woman is presented as malicious, until we actually meet her near the end of the story. Socialist journalists and carefree debutantes clash with freshly returned soldiers from the lower ranks, marking two extremes in ideology. All come together in the end where death and tragedy ensue but sympathy (mine at least) does not lie with the one who it is perhaps intended to lie with. I think the person most injured in this whole tale is the poor woman who had the unfortunate fate of falling in love with the young college man. An intriguing story!

By Ronald Ng Han Chow The book develops the character very well, you can watch the journey of a super hero from he was a trainee to something else, it is very well paced, this book is very different you can read the thoughts of the protangonist and it is really amazing and exciting to read it at the start of every chapter! Very well written!

Superhero By Phoebe Stone A confession about how the end of the world would like if aliens would attack Earth and humankind would start to create heroes to defend their planet and their survival. "Trainee Superhero" is exactly about this, following the main character and his evolution from the age of five, when he witnessed the first attack of the saucers on planet Earth. The end of the world setting is engaging and captivating, and the narrator (the same as the main character) does a very good job in portraying what coming of age means in such a world. Young adult fiction that I have enjoyed reading.

I really liked how the author took the aliens and superheroes archetype and really made it something his own. The writing is quite easy to read as well, and the plot is easy to get into and get through. Overall, a fun and easy read that will satisfy anyone who enjoys science fiction. I wouldn't really classify this as a "beach read," per se, but it was smooth, well-paced, and entertaining.

For anyone to deny it, I would only remind them of 9/11 and ask them to try to imagine that 25 years ago. By most standards I'm old. A lot of what has been predicted has come true some good some bad. Here's one for you: Within 25 years we will be at war with China. I just hope we have people like these characters to handle the task. Well written, concise and focused. Im rooting for the good guys and America and want those Invaders sent home now!! Ian, Leah and Grace have all fought their way to each other and now we are getting the answers to our questions about how this invasion happened. I think all of us readers want some serious retaliation. So looking forward to the next book. Highly recommend to all those who like adventure type or TEOTWAWKI books. Already recommended to friends and family.

I will definitely read the next installment in this series. Next one supposed to be the conclusion and I'm really curious to see how they are going to tie everything together and finished the story. These aren't the shortest book I rad but they aren't all that long either. Well I guess I'll have to wait and see.
