From the Author I've finally come to understand what a shadow book means. A shadow book is my writing playground, where my pen oscillates high and low on a ten-year-old boy's red-painted steel swing set. On each swing up toward a bright blue sky, a new fantastic world or unusual creature or compelled protagonist comes to life within my mind's eye. And on the way back down to where the earth rushes up to meet me, story pieces come together and a plot is ended. I suppose my imagination has always resided on this playground.A shadow book is a place where I can experiment. From some of this playful shorter writing, a greater work might spring forth, as in the case of the story "Cosmo's Tale." I came to realize that Trish, Melody, and Cristee had more to tell beyond Esther's own troubles. Each character sat next to me on that playground's swing set, chatting, laughing, and daring an inspiring sun to shut out its light. These characters will tell their own stories in another book completed at a later date.But I shouldn't forget to mention "CRDL" or "Christmas Never Snows." I may be as naïve as a ten year old, but through a young one's eyes, we might see how the best of intentions can cause harm to others: we might sense that a sweeping and general set of rules might force us all into our own miserable boxes like the postapocalyptic "CRDL." And in "Christmas Never Snows," the box may be our own mind.So where do I go with shadow books? I'll continue writing them. More characters will join me on each swing up toward a bright blue sky. We'll laugh and play together. I'll swing higher than I ever have, my face looking up to a warming sun, daring it to shut out its inspiring light.

By JenacideByBibliophile Disclaimer: This book was sent to me by the author, M. Duda, for an honest review. Okay my readers, I know you have heard this one a MILLION times but I must repeat it again: Don’t judge a book by its cover. This is NOT a children’s book, it is actually quite far from it. When M. Duda asked if I could review this book for him, I of course had to clarify what genre it fell into because the cover is pretty misleading. After reading the short stories that were contained in A Cat Will Play, I have to say that the cover is actually quite fitting for the underlining messages that are sealed inside this one of a kind book. This is something VERY different from what you have ever read, and it has a horrifically beautiful feeling that is captured in every word and detail.A Cat Will Play contains three short stories, all of which showcase different aspects of human nature. The first shorts story, CRDL, gives the reader an insight into a post-apocalyptic world that is riddled with poverty, unclean air, and an abundance of dead bodies that are used to create cooking fuel for children. Christmas Never Snows is about a woman who has passed away, but remains in the house she grew up in as a child. With the inability to leave her home, due to the guilt of feeling responsible for her mother’s death, her father comes back to help assist her into the afterlife. In Cosmo’s Tale, a young girl struggles with finding a crowd to fit into while also trying to find answers to why things are the way they are in the world.These three short stories are amazing! The style of writing that M. Duda uses in his writing is highly descriptive and detailed. The imagery brings the writer right into each story and leaves you feeling a bit strange about the world. I personally loved the last short story, Cosmo’s tale, which centered on a fourteen-year-old girl who is longing to find adventure but looks in the wrong places. It captures adolescence perfectly in the way that each awkward character is portrayed, as well as showing that each person has their own struggles that they are hiding. Not only does the main character come to realize that not everything is what it seems, but she starts to really appreciate what she has been dealt with in life. Christmas Never Snows explains to the reader about forgiveness and accepting mistakes that have been made. Basically, one can never truly rest until they accept the things that they cannot change.Each short story in this book reveals a few small life lessons that everyone should be aware of, but the author delivers each lesson in an almost blatant yet cryptic way. I would highly recommend this book to any reader, no matter what genre you are most interested in. The writing is fantastic, and you will get sucked into the characters and situations as soon as you read the first page. I am so glad I read this book, and I cannot wait to go back and read book one.
0 of 0 people found the following review helpful. One of these three stories is a home run By Sherman Morrison I downloaded this book from the Story Cartel website. It contains three short stories. The first, titled CRDL, is a brief glimpse into a post-apocalyptic world in which society does incredibly twisted things in order to survive. It shows how anything can be rationalized when survival is at stake. Talk about desperate times calling for desperate measures! My concern with the writing in the first story is how there are too many characters appearing rapid-fire one after the other. The reader can't quite make any concrete sense out of it. Perhaps that was the intention. If so, then it's not a style that pleases me. The second story, Christmas Never Snows, was more interesting to me. A father from the afterlife comes back to try and convince the ghost of his daughter that it's time to move on. That part of the story is great, but the people who show up to the home the daughter haunts are just too depressingly dysfunctional, weird, and sick without any rhyme or reason (again, something that just doesn't appeal to my taste). The third story is by far the best -- Cosmo's Tale -- about an eighth grade girl trying figure out how she wants to be and who she wants to hang out with. Most of it is thoroughly, depressingly bleak, and very accurately captures the essence of middle school as many have experienced it. I was particularly heartened by the increasingly better choices the protagonist made at the end of the story, because that's what suits my taste best. I'm good with bleak as long as there's some hope thrown in!

By Carol Motycka I really enjoyed Duda's first book and was excited to see a second book had been written. Duda's characters are fascinating and the stories leave you eager for more. I really enjoy psychological horror and the paranormal so these books are right up my alley! All I can say is I can't wait for another book and I hope there is a full novel soon!
