"The Shadow Out of Time" indirectly tells of the Great Race of Yith, an extraterrestrial species with the ability to travel through space and time. The Yithians accomplish this by switching bodies with hosts from the intended spatial or temporal destination. The story implies that the effect when seen from the outside is similar to spiritual possession. A "definitive" version of "The Shadow out of Time" would be one that, like the early Arkham House texts, was based on the author's hand-corrected copies of the June 1936 issue of ASTOUNDING STORIES magazine. That is the version that follows Lovecraft's last instructions and obeys Lovecraft's final wishes. But that is not THIS edition. The real purpose of these phony "corrections" (as with all Joshi-edited texts) is not to honor the author's wishes, but to establish a renewed copyright claim to texts that might otherwise have entered public domain. In this case, the immediate excuse for the "corrections" is the rediscovery of an early hand-written draft of the story which, not surprisingly, differs in countless minor ways from the text as finalized by Lovecraft. The basic facts are not in serious dispute. The earliest surviving draft of this story (any earlier ones having been destroyed by Lovecraft) was completed by Lovecraft in February 1935. It is barely-legible and hand-scribbled in a child's notebook. Later that summer, Lovecraft visited his friend Robert Barlow in Florida, and during the visit Barlow typed the manuscript. When Lovecraft went home at the end of the summer, he took Barlow's typescript with him, and left the manuscript with Barlow as a gift.Lovecraft then made additional revisions/corrections to Barlow's typescript. This typescript does not survive, so we cannot know how it differed from the hand-written manuscript, or what further revisions/corrections Lovecraft made to it. By mid-September had sent it to his friends in the "New York Crowd" to read and give him feedback. In late October, Lovecraft learned from his agent that ASTOUNDING STORIES had accepted "At the Mountains of Madness". A week or two later, Lovecraft's friend Donald Wandrei, acting as Lovecraft's agent but deducting no fee, submitted the Barlow typescript of "Shadow out of Time." Astounding immediately accepted that as well. Then occurred the process of revising, editing and finalizing the texts for publication. Any details of this process are lost in mists of time (as is the typescript Lovecraft submitted). However, it cannot be lightly assumed that any changes made during this period are contrary to the author's wishes. Editors and authors are not natural enemies, and, in theory at least, an editor can do nothing without an author's consent and approval. In fact, in the case of "At the Mountains of Madness" even Joshi admits that the text, as published in ASTOUNDING STORIES contains post-submission revisions that must have originated from Lovecraft himself. This is why, ordinarily, the final published text is the best evidence of an author's final wishes. In a perfect world, it would always work out this way.But this is not a perfect world, and in this case, when these two stories appeared in ASTOUNDING STORIES in the spring and summer of 1936, Lovecraft was not satisfied with the published text, especially in the case of "At the Mountains of Madness". He expressed his dissatisfaction by writing many hand-corrections on his published magazine copies. He was less upset with "Shadow.." and his corrections to "Shadow..." were less extensive than those he made to "Mountains". They mainly consisting altering capitalization (for instance, he objected to the capitalization of Moon and Moonlight). In one extreme case, he inserted 3 words, evidently to replace words that got dropped. These and other trivialities were Lovecraft's final instructions regarding the text. This edition does NOT follow those instructions, but reverts to the abandoned, hand-penciled draft of over 18 months earlier.Still, this text is worth owning because it stands as an expose of the mind and methods behind the whole dishonest "definitive Joshi texts" project. There are extensive textual notes, and here, more than in any other Joshi text, is where Joshi "shows his work". It is not a pretty sight, and as one reads Joshi's strained justifications, ones jaw drops open in awe at his arrogance, as he tries to convince the reader that, because he is a "textual scholar", he knows better than Lovecraft what Lovecraft really wanted. Watch him scold Lovecraft for not "scupulously" correcting the text to match his earlier draft (as if that were the goal). Watch him fault Lovecraft for inserting the wrong words. But (you may ask) what is the difference? The back flap of this volume boasts of having corrected "hundreds of serious errors", and there are indeed hundreds of textual alterations, most of them trivial. One of the more noticeable changes involves spelling. The text as finalized by Lovecraft used standard modern American spellings: e.g. "show", "demon", "connection", "draft". But (you may object) didn't Lovecraft prefer his habitual Britishisms and archaisms, such as "shew", "daemon", "connexion", and "draught"? Not for this text he didn't. The narrator, Nathaniel Peaslee, is a modern American. The story emphasizes that he was a perfectly normal modern New Englander before abnormality struck him. He has no interest in poetry or archaism, and his profession, that of an "instructor of political economy" was the most boring and prosaic modern subject that Lovecraft could think of. He is not the sort of person who says "shew" and "daemon" and "draught". A review of the textual notes indicates that Lovecraft, though somewhat inconsistent, made an effort to use modern spellings (e.g. "show" and "demon") even in the early hand-penciled draft. Even in those cases Joshi insists on changing them to "shew" and "daemon".But what about the excised words that Joshi "restores"? Well, there are not very many, but in virtually all cases, these words are of such a nature as to tend to confirm the suspicion that Lovecraft edited them out on purpose. For instance, it adds nothing to the story to have Peaslee attend Miscatonic University as an undergraduate. If anything, it detracts from the point Peaslee is trying to emphasize - that he was completely normal dude from Haverhill, Massechussets, until he came to Miscatonic University as a teacher in 1895.

Glad It's Here, but No Surprises By Chris Jarocha-Ernst This is the definitive edition of "Shadow out of Time", based on the recently discovered typescript created by Robert H. Barlow in the 1930s from HPL's own manuscript copy. It's also been annotated by S. T. Joshi. However, there isn't anything substantially different from the previously available versions of "Time". There are minor changes in punctuation, spelling, and such, but that's all. This isn't like "At the Mountains of Madness", which had some 5,000 words excised from its manuscript when first published. That said, it's still one of HPL's best (THE best, in some eyes) stories and a worthwhile volume to have if, like me, you appreciate the annotations Joshi has been making to Lovecraft's work in recent years. If you don't have "Shadow out of Time" in any other edition, this is the edition to get.

5 of 5 people found the following review helpful. Valueable for Any Lovecraft Fan By Randy Stafford While this story wouldn't be the entry I'd recommend to Lovecraft, it is definitely one of his major works. And this edition is worth reading for the beginning and hardcore fan.The editors' introduction details how long Lovecraft had been considering this story, his inspirations, and how he, as before in his great creative year of 1927, undertook a reading program to sharpen his style and improve his writing before starting it, his most science-fictional, tale. They also offer some intriguing observations about the specific dates in protagonist Peaslee's life and their significance to Lovecraft's.As to the annotations, it's not the largely unnecessary vocabulary lessons that Joshi and Schultz offer that are valueable, but how they point out similarities in motifs and language to other Lovecraft works, specific factual sources Lovecraft used, and the many links between this and other Cthulhu Mythos stories of Lovecraft and his friends. Even fans who have read this story more than once will probably learn something new in these notes.I can't say as I noticed any difference between the corrected text and earlier versions of the story, but then I didn't look at the appendix showing all the textual variations. But it's there for the really hardcore Lovecraft fan and scholar.

It's a good book.Pros:1) Good collection of patterns.2) Directions are simple3) Illustrations / Instructions are simple & easy to follow4) Loved the idea of listing the "Notes to follow" in each pattern, as this will be a great tip for the beginners.Cons:1) None but the formatting could have been done better. But, it is not too bad.Overview:Good book for Beginners

Additionally, I highly recommend a course or two in grammar because some of her "sentences" aren't sentences. If you have ever followed a crochet pattern, you will most likely find the patterns in this book unorganized and "too wordy."

0 of 0 people found the following review helpful. Underwhelmed and very dissapointing waste of money. By Amazon Customer There are only one baby sock pattern, two hat patterns, and one fingerless glove. Overly complicated and hard to follow instructions combine with poor quality black and white photos (four in total)... not worth the money. I was so excited for the book and have been let down tremendously.

By Lauren I have always been a big fan of William Morris and I knew his daughter May embroidered a lot of his patterns and designed her own as well. It was fun to hear in her own voice her ideas about design which are perfectly applicable today. The reproduction of this book leaves something to be desired (too pale to read some of it) but I knew that going in. very interesting.

This is a continuation of Celia and Aric' story - I really liked Celia - she's sassy yet sweet. I loved that she's such a strong woman yet quite vulnerable and needs Aric and her sisters. And Aric - such an Alpha - strong, controlling yet will do anything for his mate and love. My heart broke at times for them - the pain they were struggling to get past was wrenching. I chuckled throughout when reading Celia's thoughts - she seemed to find a bit of humor at the most interesting times. And I eagerly turned page after page to find out what would happen. So, this book has pretty much everything - suspense, drama, action, love, humor and romance ( I loved Aric's proposal attempt).Ms. Robson is quickly becoming one of my favorite authors! I really like her stories "Once Perfect" and "Once Loved", and have now ventured into this paranormal series and have enjoyed it just as much. Just a quick note - this is Book 5 of this series. I have not read the other books of this series, but intend to. Ms. Robson did a good job of giving some history thought, but, obviously, couldn't retell the entire thing here. I am now really curious and want to know the entire story! Thank you Ms. Robson for another enjoyable tale and I look forward to more in the future! (copy received from NetGalley for honest review)

This whole series is stupendous and I highly recommend them to anyone who likes urban fantasy/paranormal romance. I hate to see Celia and Eric's part ending, because I love them so much, but I look forward to seeing glimpses of them in future books. Plus, I really think Celia has had enough. She deserves a break. I'm really looking forward to seeing what happens next in this series and if Taren can draw me in as much as Celia has. With Ms. Robson writing I really am not worried. The only bad thing about this series is that the later books are not available in paperback. I sincerely hope that changes in the future. I really want to add it to my paperback collection. Definitely a series I can re-read over and over again.

Clifton I feel like I need to apologize to someone. The conclusion (sort of) of Celia’s story came out while my blog was down so I didn’t get a chance to scream my praises about A Curse Unbroken. But then, this is the fifth book in Ms. Robson’s fantastic Weird Girls series. What more can I say that I haven’t already said about this series? I have a page full of notes but I’m fearing this will be a short review.I want to start off by reminding everyone that the books in this series don’t work so well as stand alones. The reader would miss out on so much of the story including those little nuances between the characters. The reader would be left just feeling confused and/or bored. BUT, if you have been reading this series and it’s been awhile since you last read the previous book, Ms. Robson is extremely good at getting the reader caught up on what has just transpired and where all the characters are currently at (mentally and, often times, physically). In the previous book, A Cursed Bloodline, my soul was left bloodied and flayed on the sidewalk for all to see when I finished it. I wasn’t sure how I was going to continue reading the series. I was so obnoxiously over-invested in Celia’s loss that I think Ms. Robson thought I was a nut case and told me on the sly that everything will work out in the end (vague statement and not a spoiler!). Well, okay, I’ll keep reading but I’m still not happy…. :)Without going too far into the plot, there’s a rock that is as old as the Earth is. Every faction of supernatural being is trying to get their hands on it before all it’s “wishes” are used up, the last wish being the most significant because that wish will tip the scales between good and evil. Best part is, this “rock” is so old that it has developed a personality, a humorous one at that.Aric and the wolves set out to find this stone before it gets into the “wrong” hands. He wants Celia to stay home to continue to recover. But Celia is having none of that and she and her sisters set out to find the stone, too. And you know when the sisters and wolves clash it’s all sorts of fun, trouble, blood, and mayhem!! Speaking of blood, you can NEVER forget about the vamps! Misha is around, perhaps not as much as I’d like but he’s there.“Don’t worry, Ceel,” Bren said. “The broom humpers have it covered.”Why do I love this series so much? Ms. Robson is a master at blending hilarious humor and scorching romance with her imaginative crazy action and fight scenes. I would rip the lips off any woman who camped out in front of my husband’s bedroom half-naked, too. Oh, yes she did!Faithful readers will find many stories come around full circle and new threads open up for the continuation of this series. I’m personally highly anticipating both Taran and Emme’s books!!! I only ask for my soul to be kept in one piece.I received this book for free from NetGalley in exchange for an honest review. This does not affect my opinion of the book or the content of my review.

Devon Sinclair loved her life. As one of the biggest parasites in DC, she spent every day bribing officials and ruining the American dream for the working class as she lobbied politicians on behalf of her clients. At the top of her game, she was highly sought after by every dirt bag corporation and scum with their own agenda to corrode America for financial gain and power. None of them had a clue who her true employers were. The truth was, she had chosen sides in the hidden, dark war consuming the world long ago, and she had never regretted it. Until she stumbled across the strange alien who literally walked into her path outside her house and set her heart and body on fire. Drago fle’ te’ Trugh had come to the strange city of Washington, DC to help his sister in law find a prime hunter and to help track the traitorous prime who had attempted to kill one of their own. He’d been in town only days when he ran into the beautiful, strong and enigmatic woman who short circuited his energy and left him aching to touch her. The more clues that Drago and his brothers uncover, the more convinced he becomes that the woman of his dreams is among the members of the Relian cult trying to destroy the world and the human race. With a prime traitor close on their heels and the depth of the betrayal becoming clearer, Drago will have just one chance to save her, but only if he can convince her to turn from the cult determined to destroy them all.

3 of 3 people found the following review helpful. You need to have read the series before you know what's going on. By Joy I am giving this a middle of the road review not due to any failing or success of the book but due to the fact that you need to have read the other titles in the series to understand the plot. I bought this book because the sample seemed interesting but the story spends equal time around other characters and is based heavily on a pre existing story. So if you don't have the skinny on past events you are going to be lost.I'm the type of reader that likes the focus to be on the two main characters and this wasn't that kind of story. Because of that issue it didn't grab my attention, even after I skimmed ahead a bit.I will say it seems like a good value for the amount of pages but other than that I couldn't say.

2 of 2 people found the following review helpful. Loving the series... Please keep them coming! By renae71 Personally I think Mikayla Lane is a hugely talented author. World building, character building, and storytelling are phenomenal! A bit of a sadist, but talented. I love the new additions to this series. The Dranovians are amazing! I feel horrible for the women trapped by Satalis. The Dark Prime lives up to his reputation, but he's like a sadistic Hugh Hefner. Weird twists everywhere. The story flows well and many times I found myself scratching my head wondering if what I was thinking was happening was really happening or if it was a plot device to mess with me. Then I would convince myself that couldn't be right. Then I'd flip a 180 and be back where I started. Thought I was a pancake on a griddle for a while there! Flip-Flip-flip-flip-FLIP! (See... sadist.)As the previous reviewer expressed, other than typos (word usage errors), this is another stellar performance in the First Wave and Second Wave series.I love Drago. He's a huge teddy bear with GRIZZLY BEAR tendencies when those he loves are threatened. Seriously! Yum! But he's not all misty eyes and hugs nor is he all rip, tear, shred. The big lug has a brain and a heart as well. When his teddy bear side is frustrated, confused, or hurting I just want to cuddle up next to him and tell him it's all going to work out okay.Angel drives me nuts. The girl knows that her family loves her and wants to protect her, but just can't keep her crazy butt out of trouble. I have two words for this chick... IMPULSE CONTROL!Deven makes me want to throw something at her head. Rather than trusting her instincts, she keeps trying to push away the one person who can't be pushed away. Then she pulls him closer. Then gets upset about it. Do you like him? Yes. Do you love him? Probably. Then what the hell is the problem. You know who and what he is and that he's strong, reliable, deadly, and capable. Make up your frickin' mind! This whole series allows us to meet people who are strong and determined, loved and loving, and to really hate some of the villains and their dastardly plans. I mean really, who doesn't enjoy it when the people who are messing with my planet get their asses kicked?

2 of 2 people found the following review helpful. Almost a 5 star. By Kindle Customer I worked in literacy programs for over twenty years and for me some mistakes are hard to overlook. Example: using the word brothers. Editing used brother's when it should have been brothers That's it. Just some regular typos. Now the good stuff. I have read every book in the "First Wave" series and absolutely loved them! Dragon's story was right up there with all the rest in First Wave..Please start with the books in First Wave. Never thought I would be a fan of science fiction or apocalyptic themed novels, but he had me from book zero. It was so well written that I felt like I was physically present in the story as a silent observer. Great character development, and just the right amount of twists and turns to keep you wanting more. Read this in an hour and wished I paced myself because now I have to wait again! I don't know if the author reads these reviews, but on the off chance he does, "I CAN'T WAIT FOR YOUR NEXT RELEASE!!"

By Liz While I hate to loose the good characters and it makes me sad, I guess it would be a bit boring if the good ones always won. What an exciting ride! I can't wait to see what book 8 has to offer! I seriously doubt I will be disappointed. Good reading I highly recommend.

Please, do a better job of editing your books. Breech and breach are not the same word, and neither are breath and breathe. Do the editing work and these are 5-star books all the way.

It is very important to know the difference between wanting to learn how to knit and wanting to know how to knit. You can’t skip ahead to the knowing. You have to do the learning first. People sometimes say that they think they are too old to learn, but the truth is, knitting is one skill where age can definitely benefit you in the learning process. A child often wants to know how, whereas an adult usually has the patience to learn. The most important thing to remember about learning to knit is this: You are going to mess it up. Not just right now, when you’re new to it and learning, but later, when you’ve been doing it a long time and you think you’ve got it down. And that’s ok because the second thing to remember about knitting is that you can fix it.

I do, my mom and I always use to cross stitch together when I was little during christmas time. In some way knitting and cross stitching is therapeutic. If you have no idea how to sew, knit, or anything I recommend starting off with this box set. The books arent painfully long, theyre very straight to the point and gives advice and tips for beginners. Recommended.

I've enjoyed first reading Lovecraft, and then later listening to the stories, so I know what to expect. This story is fun and silly and has a lot of typical Lovecraft elements, if not many refinements of his better stories. There are two elements worth nothing. First, the story is short but was written in a way to be serialized across six chapters. After the first chapter, each subsequent chapter has a fair amount of summary that adds a lot of unnecessary bulk to the story. Secondly, it has some of Lovecraft's racism that was all too common in his stories. The narrator did a fine job with the story, and I'll try out his other readings.

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. What a wonderful book By Kathryn Bowlin-mackenzie Even though I have a story in this book, I had not read the other stories. I am very pleased that I completely enjoyed all of them. What a wonderful idea Juliet had to have other authors use her characters to write a story, it works very well. Even though each author writes in a different style all the stories enhance the book.I am familiar with the characters as I read Juliet's books, but to see them each in a different light was fascinating and wonderful. I really enjoyed this book and I know that others will as well. Don't miss out on this one.

At least four times in Earth’s history, the continents have come sliding together to form a single mass—a super-continent. Geologists have dubbed the most recent such formation Pangaea. Of course, Pangaea broke up a long time ago, and because it did, different portions of mankind developed in drastically different climes and circumstances. But what if we were living on one of the super-continents? What if all of humanity was confined to a single landmass . . . and had been so confined for all of our recorded history? To explore this different world, we’ve harnessed the imaginations of some of science fiction’s most inventive writers—Michael A. Burstein, Adam-Troy Castro, Russ Colchamiro, Peter David, Kevin Dilmore, Michael Jan Friedman, Robert Greenberger, Glenn Hauman, Paul Kupperberg, Kelly Meding, Aaron Rosenberg, Lawrence M. Schoen, Geoffrey Thorne, and Dayton Ward. So come with us . . . and discover a world like none you’ve seen before. Discover Pangaea.

2 of 2 people found the following review helpful. Imaginative Alternate-Earth Anthology By Howard Weinstein A cool, what-if premise (developed by editor Michael Jan Friedman) sets the tone for a baker's-dozen of short stories by a wide range of fine writers. In this alternate-Earth universe, the continents remained together instead of spreading to form our own familiar globe. Stories examine how human society and culture might have developed had geology set a very different course.Lots of well-known, talented and award-nominated/winning science fiction, STAR TREK and comic-book writers among the contributors: Michael Jan Friedman, Peter David, Kelly Meding, Lawrence M. Schoen, Geoffrey Thorne, Dayton Ward & Kevin Dilmore, Adam-Troy Castro, Robert Greenberger, Russ Colchamiro, Michael A. Burstein, Paul Kupperberg, Aaron Rosenberg and Glenn Hauman. As with any anthology, there's variation in subject matter and story-telling styles. So readers may like some better than others (the only reason I give it 4 stars -- really 4.5 -- instead of 5). But if you find the premise intriguing, you're likely to enjoy your reading time spent with these imaginative authors!

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. Gabriel thinks Shawn is beautiful but much to young for him By It's About The Book How to Build a Shed by Kim Dias – Shawn is in the middle of putting away books when he sees the man of his dreams. Gabriel thinks Shawn is beautiful but much to young for him. Not that that’s going to stop him from asking Shawn out on a date.Love on the Tarmac by Quinn Dressler – Cooper Austin works for an airline company as a rampie. He’s being harassed by First Officer Pratt, when Captain Matt Bowman comes to his rescue.Flat Packed by Henrietta Clarke – Louise is stuck with his best friends brother, David while shopping for furniture at IKEA. Things wouldn’t be so bad, but these two guys just don’t get along.Coffee Run by Jess Roth – Alex is helping his mom out by doing her cleaning job while she’s out sick. While on the job he meets cute, awkward Emmett.Hot Cross Buns by Ginger Streusel – Cole meets Johnny after a terrible night fighting a huge fire. Johnny, a cafe worker, offers Cole a cup of coco.Moonshine by Charlie Tannen – Charles hires Oscar to build him a car. Oscar has no idea how a man could afford such an expensive thing, but he plans to find out.The Last Snow Globe Repairman by Allan Jay – Matt, a Snow Globe repairman moves in across the street from Tom. Tom thinks things may go well between them. Well, that is until he finds out there’s more to Matts job than just fixing Snow Globes. The Stonemason by Terry Rissen – Russ works as a custodian for a museum. He used to be a big hotshot painter until one morning he woke up and had lost his love for painting.Of Scribes and Kings by Bryl R. Tyne – An online gamer who has set his sights on the maintenance man for his building.Executive Decision by Alice Archer – Dar is a stone mason. He has spent many years building walls, he loves his job but hates his boss. Pierre is the CEO of a company. He never has time for anything, but when his father dies, Dar is there to help him get through it.It has taken me a couple hours to come up with something to say about this anthology. And I absolutely hate that I have to say this, but this one really disappointed me. There were only a few stories that actually appealed to me, and some of them left me with a big WTF-did-I-just-read by the time I finished them. Which truly bums me out, because I love anthologies. But Bare Studs just didn’t do it for me. However, this is just my opinion. You may love them all or hate the ones I loved. I guess that’s up to you, but this set of stories just weren’t for me.

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. Sweet and saucy By L. S. Tucker This collection was received free of charge in exchange for a fair, honest review. There are ten m/m stories ranging from contemporary to science fiction to historical to paranormal. All the stories contain at least one main character who works with their hands, from stonemasons to plumbers to electricians and more. I honestly loved this collection and definitely recommend it to m/m romance fans. I would also recommend it to anyone who is new to m/m romance as this isn't overly graphic. My overall rating would be 4 out of 5."Coffee Run" by Jess Roth.Alex is covering for his ill mother as cleaner in the office building where Emmett works. Emmett is cute, easily flustered, and a serious science fiction fan. The story is short, and so very sweet. Emmett is earnest, awkward, and adorkable. Alex is, as Emmett observes, hot. He's also a good man. 4 out of 5."The Last Snow Globe Repairman" by Allan Jay.Tom watched as a new man moved into his neighborhood, his van announcing he repairs snow globes. They run into each other again at a horror film at the local theater. Matt is more than just a repairman, but how will Tom deal with the reveal? I was a little worried at first when Tom grabbed Matt's wrist, invading his personal space. Luckily my concerns were baseless. There's so much going on in this story, so many threads to explore. Missing parents, spirit catching, gay ghost, a lake full of spirits. It deserved a much longer format, but it was enjoyable nonetheless. 3.5 out of 5."Of Scribes and Kings" by Bryl R. Tyne.Ken called his apartment complex's maintenance man to repair some minor items. But he has an ulterior motive. Okay, this relationship really is beyond creepy. Ken traced the other man's IP address to move near him. He sabotages things to get Carr to come to his apartment and stay longer. This is more a slasher stalker porn flick setup than a true romance. We don't even know the first name of Ken's stalkerish affection, only that of his father and his gamer name. Then there are Ken's other issues, such as he never leaves his apartment, even to shop. He downs three beers in rapid succession to fuel his courage. When they do have sex, it is as their gaming alter egos. This isn't healthy, it isn't romantic, it is dangerous. Role play is fine, but not until after a couple has already connected. 2.5 out of 5."Executive Decision" by Alice Archer.Dar Riley saw the offworlder watching him build the wall, day after day. Pierre Catalan is a busy man, one who is fiercely in control of himself and his environment. That changes when he receives bad news while with Dar. What a contrast between our two heroes. Dar is unable to control much in his life. Pierre is too much in control. He needs someone like Dar who can take over the reins, give him permission to step back. I'm always in favor of good science fiction romances, whether m/f or m/m. Science fiction isn't all monsters and space ships. Subtle touches make a good story into satisfying sci-fi and Archer knows just how to paint the scenes. 4.5 out of 5."Flat Packed" by Henrietta Clarke.David Porter, in town for his sister's wedding, is enjoying teasing Louis King, the man of honor and Hayley's best friend. But Louis has the wrong take on David's travels, one that causes friction between them. Both men are good guys, I'm sure that the sex was fantastic. But I worry that there is too much against them as a couple. Still I hope for the best for both of them. And that, dear readers, will always be the mark of a good writer, when you care about the characters. 3.5 out of 5."Moonshine" by Charlie Tannen. It was an unusual request. Charles wants a fast car, all in black, lightweight to help increase the speed, but with a large storage compartment. Oscar is intrigued, not only by the machine that he's building, but by Charles himself. Set during Prohibition, this may be my favorite of the collection. It is a period that isn't seen often in romances, but one I enjoy. Oscar's worry about Charles' criminal activities is well thought out. The attraction and love between the two men jumps off the page. And the ending? Exquisite! 5 out of 5."Love on the Tarmac" by Quinn Dressler.Captain Matt Bowman rescued Cooper Austin from his homophobic First Officer. Coop, like most everyone else, has a crush on the handsome pilot, but didn't think he had any chance. Until Matt joins him for a burger. Another favorite setting of mine, airports and flight personnel. There's a heroic pilot, a cretin First Officer, and an alert rampie who saves the day. I almost got a combination CABIN PRESSURE and WINGS vibe from this tale, in all the best ways. 4.5 out of 5."The Stonemason" by Terry Rissen.Russell Grant had run from his once all encompassing art when it dried up on him. A new job, a new name, a new life, yet still dealing with the art he loved, only this time as a custodian in a small art museum. Then one night something extraordinary occurs. Sad and exciting and heartbreaking and wonderful. Thank heavens for the epilogue or I don't know if I could've survived the story. Even knowing that art, good art, art that pulls at your soul, can be born out of pain, I wanted Russ to have his happily ever after. 4.5 out of 5."Hot Cross Buns" by Ginger Streusel. After a rough resuce, firefighter Cole is wandering the streets at night when Johnny invites him into his family's diner for some hot chocolate. Cole is blaming himself for not being fast enough, believing that the child he rescued wouldn't be struggling in the hospital otherwise. Johnny seems to help lift the weight off his shoulders. A sweet little tale of fire and food. Cole will burn out if he doesn't learn to accept that all he can ever do is his best. Luckily Johnny can help him through that. 3.5 out of 5."How to Build a Shed" by Kim Dias. They met at the library and it was immediate attraction for both men. Shawn, a librarian, was younger and, according to Gabe, too goodlooking to be for him. Still Gabe wanted to see Shawn again, so he makes up a story about needing books to help him build a shed. A desperate lie thought up on the fly as Gabe is actually a construction foreman. Poor Gabe. Poor Shawn. Lies and misunderstandings play havoc on their fledgling relationship. Adorable and beyond sweet. 3.5 out of 5.
