20 of 20 people found the following review helpful. A Great Addition to a Fantastic Series! By An Amazon Reviewer The "Progressive" series contains side-stories not included in the main novels. Some of these include Kirito/Kirigaya's first meeting with Asuna, and the first-floor boss battle. All of the novels (being the source material for the anime) go deeper into detail than the anime. For example, the game's mechanics and character backstories are given greater coverage than in the anime. As always, having the story narrated in first-person is a plus, as are abec's illustrations. Asuna fans will definitely thank abec for a little bit of fanservice on page 60 ;)

Filling in the Gaps By K.Man The "Progressive" Novels is a series of side-stories that expands on the Aincrad arc by following the main characters during their two-year imprisonment within the game as they slowly advance floor by floor. This volume takes place a month after Kayaba's announcement.The first volume and chapter covers Asuna and Kirito's first meeting and subsequently, their first boss fight on the first floor. It is also the chapter where Kirito is first branded with the title of "Beater". In the second chapter, we are later introduced to Argo, the Informant Broker and a fellow Beta-Tester, who Kirito encounters on the second floor and has him complete a side-quest with humorous results. Finally, the third chapter focuses on Kirito returning to the first floor and temporarily joining Asuna as she attempts to upgrade her rapier, with several complications along the way.As in previous volumes, the gameplay mechanics of the SAO are greatly elaborated upon. Particularly, the topic of sensory input such as touch, taste, smell, etc. which is emulated within the game becomes quite a thought-provoking subject. Also, we get to further explore the psyches of our main hero and heroine, who are initially somewhat morbid (Asuna) and socially awkward (Kirito) loners who gradually grow to trust one another and build in character as they fight to survive this game.

Even though its a manga version, its not the same art style as the current manga thats out. Its more in-tune with the light novel despite being a manga. Pre-ordered it, and im glad i did. Its the way SAO should be written. Very detailed and from the beginning. :) Could not be happier with the product, will buy all the rest of them to come.
