8 of 8 people found the following review helpful. surprisingly good! By Renee and John Howard I started the book with few expectations, since so many self-published PA books have major problems with either story development, formatting, or grammar/spelling and punctuation. While there were punctuation errors (mostly due to incorrect sentence construct) and the occasional spelling error, the book was a pretty good read. Be aware that it's short and the first in a series. I look forward to reading the next installment. To Mr. Mercer: more than one terrorist or a group of them are terrorists (plural), not terrorist (singular). I know I'm not the only one out there who finds that kind of error distracting and I'd want to fix that kind of thing if I was is your shoes, so as to not detract from an otherwise good story. Keep up the good work!

All three could easily be combined into a single book because they are more chapters or sections than individual books. I like the story and the characters. The female characters are intelligent, active participants instead of just screaming, helpless victims as is often portrayed in post-apoc fiction. The main man Ian is a little too perfect and multi-talented to be believed but it was an entertaining and enjoyable read. There is no filthy language or graphic sex scenes. Thank You Mr. Mercer. There is some good prepping information. I like the societal breakdown behavioral psychology angle and would like more information on that. The only complaint is a common one for indi authors-spell check is not editing. There were numerous misuses of words-Loose/lose was most frequent but heal/heel, role/roll, dear/deer showed up too. These errors break the flow of the story and make it less enjoyable.

It held my interest and kept me turning the pages. The author does a good job in presenting the 'prepper' side...and the 'non-prepper' side. The prepping mindset is presented in such a way that is logical and real. The Burrows family was concerned about certain events and begain preparing for such events years in advance. This premise is more to the reality side of those who do prepare for any such event, whether it be a natural event (hurricane, earthquake, storms, etc.), or the collapse of society, EMP, invasion. The author portrays the Burrows family as realistic, logical and 'human.' The characters are depicted as people who have planned well, with a proper mindset for what could and did happen. The human side of the Burrows family is portrayed as strong, yet, are depicted as having a conscience and feelings when having to do things they didn't like doing. Other characters are depicted as those who would/will take advantage of a situation for their own means. (Heck, that happens now in society, but will be 100 times worse in a societal breakdown)This story has some editing issues; however, not so distracting that it takes away from the flow of the read. I've seen/read much, much worse. My only specific pet-peeve in this story is the use of "clip" when talking about weapons. It's a minor issue, but I bring it up to correct the issue for those who may not know the difference. A "clip" is a small straight piece of metal approximately 4 inches long, and is used to hold rounds (usually 10) to be loaded into a rifle's 'attached' magazine. These are also known as 'stripper clips.' Other styles of magazines hold rounds/ammunition and can be detached from the weapon itself, whether it's a rifle or handgun. So if an author is going to talk about weapons, ammo and the loading of such, it would make sense to research the correct usage of such fundamental equipment so as not to make themselves appear ignorant. The words "clip" and "magazine" are not interchageable words that should be used when speaking of loading/unloading weapons.Overall; I would recommend this book. I'll be moving on to the next book in the series. I tend to agree with others though that; the books are quite short, and appears that it would have made more sense to write the entire story as a whole, then to sell each book for $.099 or more. It appears to be a 'milking' process with a lot of the series that are out there now. I use the 'prime' membership, so I don't have as much of a gripe as some would have who choose to pay the price of each book in the series.
