Stinging Tales of the Scorpion By Wayne Neel Northants Writers’ Ink is a clever name for a group whose members wrote this book’s thirteen stories and ten poems. Michael J. Richards, chair of the group and the collection editor, is one of the three men and three women contributors. He includes brief biographies of each member before their works, and in his introduction he gives helpful directions to each authors’ themes. The provided works purportedly come with “twists at the end,” the metaphoric stings of a scorpion.Richards gives two reasons such endings function. One is the reader “leads himself astray” by following clues he rather than the author created. In the end, the reader may reread to find where he misinterpreted the author’s possibly ambiguous language. The reader may enjoy how these missed clues create a personal mystery where he plays a role in a story. Not unlike a hero’s journey, a story’s character may face a challenge and avoid it. In doing so, he is forced to try again, often in a series of tests—the journey. In facing trials, the character—or reader in Richards’ first example—becomes his or her own mentor, his or her own hero.“The surprise ending” is Richards’ other reason, where a reader was following a writer one direction only to find it surprisingly changed. Traditionally, characters face conflicts. In attempting to overcome problems, often with various failed attempts—other directions—a solution may or may not be found. Either a resolution or a failure to resolve hold an unexpected meaning for a writer and readers. Such endings are difficult to do consistently, but some masters have created careers employing the technique.Short story collections contain their own impediment. Clearly, Northants Writers’ Ink members all have talent, but there is a difficulty in the theme of “tales with a twist.” One could argue that all short stories, to some degree, match one of Richards’ two types. Unfortunately, and it is not because of a weakness in the writing, the idea behind the overall theme of endings can “lead” a reader “astray.” A reader may look more carefully for a twist or surprise, taking away some of the joy of playing his own important role of detection. In fact, many people avoid short story collections by single authors because these writers’ conflicts may follow overly consistent patterns. Sherlock Holmes stores are a good example. Reading too many too quickly can be tiresome.A collection like Tales of the Scorpion faces a different obstacle. The overall theme may be too specific for not all writers in this group are equally adept at endings. Whether it is true or not, readers may find stories that had more potential with less emphasis on the solution. A few stories have no clear resolution to a problem and are better for it. Some readers may feel other works were overly revised to meet a thematic need.Much of the book’s writing is enjoyable, but read the selections slowly. Savor a few stories or poems at a time. The individual works are short with a wonderful variety of plots ranging from the mysterious to the sensual. A few are just simple fun. The pieces might be an intriguing break from longer works at hand. Give yourself time, as Richards suggests, to follow “the interpretation [of each work] that you didn’t follow,” maybe “didn’t know it was there to follow.” If you enjoy a specific writer, Richards’ introduction and individual authors’ introductions list other works by these members.
