I loved Midge Newth series of Charles and Nana cooking "classes", so I was very happy to see her do a new one involving a grandfather, Papa and his grandaughter, Tori. In this story, Tori who is 10 and loves to spend time with her grandfather and help him fix things and has become his favorite helper. In this story, Papa who gave Tori a pink tool belt, will help Tori to learn to build a plaque and a birdhouse and put her new tools to use. She learn about the materia you will need, the precautions and security measures you have to take when building something, the proper way to use her tools, and more. The story is fun and touching. You get all the instructions to do the projects with your own children or grandchildren at the end of the book. The illustration are awesome and the story is well written. A pleasure to read with children of all ages. Get ready for a trip to the hardware store! Highly recommended.

I was so happy to see a girl empowered to build things, not just relegated to being a fairy princess or cleaning the house. When I was young, I wanted to build things but got shunted off to the sewing class in home economics. I also love that Tori has such a great relationship with her father, and that he obviously enjoys guiding her to the unconventional activities for young girls. I like that the book is clearly and beautifully written, and even offers step-by-step instructions for building a wall plaque and a bird-house. And it has such a sweet ending. Buy this book, and enjoy it with your daughters and your sons!

This is a sweet story, and a fun way to introduce children to the basics of carpentry.What I like the most is that it's actually a charming walkthrough of how to measure, sand, stain, glue, and hammer correctly and safely. You can actually build a birdhouse by following the instructions that Papa gives Tori! There are even instructions for a simple wall plaque if the birdhouse project is too much for young hands.If you're handy and you want a way to introduce children to the basics of tools and woodworking, this book is great.
