If this is the author's first book then he is off to an excellent career and I look forward to and will buy his next book. Character development was good and generally believable, detail level was pretty good and story line was good. This was a relatively short book but had none of the increasingly more common tricks to make it look longer (like adding spacing). More of a long short story than a book but well worth the ninety-nine cents. Would like to see more detail and length in his next book.

Layne I get this strange feeling that I'm one of the few non-preppers reviewing this book (maybe not, but it feels that way), but I wanted to write this to show that non-preppers like it, too.I thought the practical advice peppered throughout the book was interesting, but the characters and the voice of the author were what did it for me. Yes, there were grammatical and POV errors here and there, but nothing that stopped me for too long, and nothing that a quick edit couldn't fix. Getting an edit is easy. Writing a sincere, interesting story is NOT, and thankfully Boyd succeeded in doing that.Throughout, the plot pulled me along, and as the end approached, I had a real hard time putting my kindle down. Overall, this first installment seems to me like its a realistic portrayal of what could happen both from a disaster and from a downfall of society standpoint. But I mostly like the way that a makeshift family builds around Blake and his simple, but honest nature. This story shows the bad that will probably come about if a disaster like this occurs, but it also shows the good.

I really enjoyed the story and found myself falling into the characters right away. It surprised me a bit since it usually takes me a bit longer to get into a story.Sure there were a few errors I saw, but they were easily overlooked and I powered right through them anyway. I found the story short but sweet and was really upset that it ended so quickly. That is the way shorter books are now and for the price at .99 cents or in my case Kindle Unlimited, makes perfect sense to me. Lucky for me the second installment was already out and I didn't have to wait for the next one. :)

About the Author Deemed 'the father of the scientific detective story', Richard Austin Freeman enjoyed a prolific career that saw him gain qualifications as pharmacist and surgeon, pull off a diplomatic coup along the Gold Coast, work for Holloway Prison and then become a formidable writer of fiction. He was born in London, the son of a tailor who went on to train as a pharmacist. After graduating as a surgeon at the Middlesex Hospital Medical College, Freeman taught for a while and then joined the colonial service, offering his skills as an assistant surgeon along the Gold Coast of Africa. He became embroiled in a diplomatic mission when a British expeditionary party was sent to investigate the activities of the French. Through his tact and formidable intelligence, a massacre was narrowly avoided. His future was therefore assured in the colonial service. However, after becoming ill with black-water fever, Freeman was sent back to England to recover and finding his finances precarious, embarked on a career as acting physician in Holloway Prison. In desperation, he also turned to writing where he went on to dominate the world of British detective fiction, taking pride in testing different criminal techniques. So keen was he, part of one of his best novels was written in a bomb shelter. For the first twenty-five years of his writing career, Freeman was to dominate and remain unrivalled in the world of detective fiction, introducing the well-loved and highly memorable 'Dr Thorndyke'. The continued success of this character has affirmed Richard Austin Freeman's place amongst the finest of crime writers.

Naughton Published in 1912 - The Signing Bone celebrates 100 years and is still like the penultimate Sherlock Holmes and, unfortunately overshadowed and often overlooked. R. Austin Freeman was responsible for engineering the original "inverted detective story" or the "howdhecatchem."In these 5 stories or cases, each are divided into two parts:1) the commission of the crime and2) the solution of the crimeWe become so embroiled in the crime that, like the perp, overlook the evidence.Like Holmes, the locale is London, but unlike Holmes, Dr. Thorndyke is a Medico-Legal Sleuth of sorts. Freeman insists that "Dr. Thorndyke is an investigator of crime, but he-is-not-a-detective."Freeman's inverted detective formula was the impetus and inspiration for Columbo Columbo - The Complete First Season with Peter Falk in the 70s.The title is derived from the German folk-story of the Signing Bone where a peasant found a bone of a murdered man and fashioned it into a pipe but when he tried to play on it, it burst into a song of it's own.Dr. Thorndyke concludes that it's "the inanimate things around us have each of them a song to sing to us if we are but ready with attentive ears."I know I am. 6 of 6 people found the following review helpful. Mystery solved! By Susan Grassi I truly enjoyed this book of 5 short stories about the incredible Dr. Thorndyke published in 1912. The reader knows the how, when, why and who within the first few pages of the story. It is then up to the good doctor to find the clues and explain them. I must admit to actually becoming tearful at the end of the fourth story. I look forward to reading more books about Dr. Thorndyke by R. Austin Freeman.

By Carol This was a series of great stories of different kinds of mysteries..You will know who committed the crimes, but not how it's detected, and how the villain is brought to justice, until you read the second part of the story, that is, the first part is the crime, then the second part is when the detectives enter the scene, so there are 2 parts to the story.Exciting, Not too long, not too short, well written and lots of surprising discoveries. .Thank you for this fun, free to me read. It's worth the price if you are charged for it.

By Drea Leed For anyone interested in making a medieval garment, but who doesn't know where to begin: this book is for you.This book covers everything you ever wanted to know about medieval clothing, from measurements, patterns and materials to methods of construction. It has over 400 illustrations of medieval clothing, and 121 patterns for shirts and smocks, cotes, doublets, kirtles, hose, surcotes, cotehardies, gowns, overkirtles, cloaks, children's clothing, headwear, and accessories.Current books on the subject of Medieval costume concentrate either on research (with good information on what was worn, but little on how to actually make it) or towards theatrical costume (with information on how to make the items, but dubious historical accuracy.) The Medieval Tailor's Assistant is the best of both worlds, combining solid research and detailed "how-to" information into one volume.This book is geared more toward the novice or intermediate costumer and sewer than toward the advanced historic costume researcher. As it is not primarily a research work, it doesn't delve into original sources as much as books like Janet Arnold's "Patterns of Fashion." The research which went into it is very good, however, and it gives less experienced historic costumers a splendid place to start.

By Stephanie Manley This is one of the best books for creating patterns, choosing fabrics, editing a pattern for your personal size, as well as a great primer for what to wear that I have seen. Not being an expert in the sewing craft I need a little extra guidance, and this book delivers.This book first of all does feature a nice area on garments on when they were worn historically. In a simple time line she demonstrates proper fabric choices as well as the styles that were around during those years.The book is one of the few that features patterns for men, women, children, and even babies. Also included are maturnity patterns, shoes, and some hats. So its great for the variety of patterns it will provide you.So now that we know what styles are appropriate, what fabric will work, and we can do the basics, the book is kind enough to help you with making your pattern in terms of suggesting great ways to customize patterns for you own body.This book really sets itself appart with the breadth of patterns it offers, suggestions on how to make your garmets look period by even getting embroidery patterns for buttons, and other finishing stitches, and tells you how to make them look best on you. The book is easy to read, and the illustrations are clean, clear, and concise. A definate one to pick up if you want to create clothes from years past. I would personally jump on this one, as you know some books like this have small print runs, and who knows when you can get your hands on one like this again.

Good Resource By A Customer As a medievalist and costumer whose focus is early 14th century England and France, I found this to be a wonderful book and said to myself "FINALLY!" For those looking for instructions on how to move from costuming to making actual clothing, I am certain you will be pleased.I disagreed with very little within the text and found this to be a very pleasant surprise (although I do disagree quite strongly with the modern draping methods suggested. Highly suspicious for a medieval technique in my opinion).While I would hesitate to say that all the methods are completely accurate (how could we know this? Some things we do know were not included or were replaced with easier, more modern methods), they are certainly far superior to anything else out there for this time period and place. Well done.I would stay away from much of the suggested reading on the left side of that page simply because once someone has reached this stage in their costuming development they have grown out of Houston etc... with the exception of Newton's Fashion in the Age of the Black Prince (this is worth the price for certain).The Museum of London books and the book on Queen Margareta's gown on the right side of the selected reading page are worth every penny however.I think it was worth the $... and that we are soon to see a sudden surge of truly medieval looking clothing in our living history groups and I am all for that. 100%Many, many thanks to Sarah Thurfield for so wonderfully beginning to fill of a huge costuming void.Cynthia / Merouda

I enjoyed reading this story which talks about a woman who travel back in time and there she meets a man whom she start loving. Their romance make it a more interesting but also has some explicit scenarios that are a part of story. Overall, it was a good story and I am looking for more from the author.

Do yourself and the dog you love a favor that can prolong their life and happiness: read this book By Meg Where do I begin to explain my love for this story, this journey, this inspiration and this genuine footprint on my heart? I empathized with Annie in so many instances that I really felt the heartache and joy she shared on these pages ten-fold. She is a gifted writer; the book flows very naturally and is so much more than a tale about a wonderful dog who impacted someone's life. Annie has the ability to pull someone into her personal experience and then help to guide them to the path that leads this experience to their lives. I have a senior dog, a different breed than a Heeler, but it didn't make a difference. Her prose and examples are remarkably relevant. I was incredibly pleased when she included so much information about homeopathy and how that can help when you have a dog whom you wish to give the best care to, though she's not anti-conventional veterinary medicine either. She also brought up a subject that I wish I could get more people to understand: the food we feed our dogs, and how most owners are actually harming their pets with low-quality, additive-packed brands that are on the shelves of many stores. It's the equivalent of a human eating fast-food for breakfast, lunch, and dinner every single day, from the day they were born. She includes recipes, links, and support for those items as well as others. I found this book to be a perfect blend of her love and history with her beloved companion, and information that reiterates my feelings about how I care for my own dog (and offering great information for those who had not heard of these particular things before reading the book). I highly recommend this book, a tribute to Tapa, as well as a dedicated effort to educate and help other pet owners so that Tapa's name can bring good health to other souls. I received a free copy of this book in exchange for an honest review. I've also already purchased a copy as a gift.

The first part is a love story to the very end, but then begins Tapa's legacy of helping other dogs live their lives to the fullest & healthiest via her devoted owner. There is a wealth of information for every dog owner - important things that no one's told you, well-researched and with clickable links to every type of canine help & health site. If you live with a dog, this book will greatly enrich your journey together.

Long This book contains 8 stories, and was a good example of the subjects that stirred the imagination of this important author and spurred her on to take up paper and pen to create a story. In this collection the tales are all completely different and some have the personal thoughts of the author or a moral to the story. She wrote and wanted her readers to think for themselves. I don't think she morally judged anyone, she excepted people with all their virtues and faults. I have to believe that she read news articles of the day and from those she found her sources for creating stories of her own. Not my favorite works but really enjoyed reading these.

About the Author Cristina Ward was born and raised in the Philippines. She first came to United States in 2007. Happily married to a military man and still going strong. They have been blessed with three wonderful boys whom she refers to as "They are my little angels, my little treasures."

The Crazy Woman By MissScarlett While this story "flowed" better than the other one I reviewed, it still felt kind of disconnected.Again, the pictures were a distraction and made the story feel like it was for children. Again,the Look Inside Feature does not allow one to read any of the text itself which is the whole point of it. I wish the author luck in her writing career and hope that it improves with practice.

Reading these otherworldly descriptions truly made my hair stands on end and sometimes I even held my breath as the images she creates swam before my eyes.There is a gathering in Castle Drakon, a gathering of the ancient blood of the Drakonian Order, and this night will see the ceremony that serves to bind its members together come to pass. Ivan is king, a man without scruples who stole his position when he exiled the true heir. Evanda is his queen, but she doesn’t get to lie in the bed she made with him when she turned her back on truth, for Ivan abuses the serving women of the castle to get laid. She is like the Russian nesting dolls, the matroyshka, for always there is another Evanda hidden in the layers, she is the wearer of masks.Zalar is the guest on this night, summoned because he has the blood that enables him to attend the gathering. It is time for change.When the lights go out in the castle, we realise Zalar has the kind of dragon sight that allows him to see in the dark, a gift inherent in his ancient lineage. A race through hidden tunnels and catacombs ensues, in darkness using this special sight. Zalar has the Perun (the true god of his line) skeleton key, and he races to a place where he is anointed for the meeting to come, where only the true blood is able to use the key and open the door. Time is of the essence, and thus he races through darkness. Anointed, he returns to ‘the jesters pretending royalty’ to take back what is rightfully his. He seeks to open another door, into a place of true beauty and peace.I will not reveal more, for this story is like the Matroyshka doll, layer within layer, and you must read it to get to the levels of understanding nestled into this tale. Profound and beautifully written, there are hidden depths here ready for unmasking. This could be a full length novel; it has that much in it. Poppet excels again in her story-telling abilities, drawing you further and further in to see those layers. I am awed and you will be as well.

As always the story grabbed hold of me from the first word and held on right through to the last word. I found myself unable to stop once I started this great story. I won't give anything away, you need to read it for yourself. All I will say is this is another brilliant story by Poppet.

Desiree Finkbeiner delivers an astute and fresh look at sustainable projects and truly sustainable living, at a deep rooted level. Resourcing 101 takes a nice strong look at your mindset and how to work it to your advantage. Some really insightful information on pallets to use in gardening and different dwelling structures. The tips do not stop, one great idea after another and I love the author’s experience and breakdown of the power of bartering. I couldn’t believe the shear number of resources that are available to achieve all the goals to remain debt-free. A really great guide to resourcing.

It's short, sweet, and to the point, yet packed with information that I've never heard before! It gave me better insights on resourcing and sustainability. This book is incredibly useful if money is one thing that is always stopping you from doing what you want to do. I would say that the lessons in this book are definitely worth your time and money... and overall this is an excellent self help book.

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. Who Knew Baking Soda was so useful? By Rosemary M. Goddard What a great book! So many uses for Baking Soda that I had no clue about. Definitely will keep this book handy for reference when I have a big mess or need to refresh something. I have always used baking soda of course in cooking and for small cleaning jobs, but this book lists so many other things with actual ingredient lists and recipes for baking soda combinations.

By Mike Helton I have been a big fan of baking soda for a long time now, using it as a go to cleaner for a variety of household cleaning jobs. But when I stumbled on this ebook, I was amazed at what I found! Neo Monefa definitely did his homework here - there's a lot of really fun history and science to go along with the practical application. I was motivated to write this review, however, because of the one-star review left here, accusing this book of reading as though it was poorly translated from another language.While stylistically different from your average author, this book is written perfectly well, and the author puts his own voice into the writing, which I found refreshing - a how-to book with genuine character in the writing is hard to come by. While this may be a change of pace for the average reader, the book is by no means written poorly. More important than anything, the recipes and instructions for how to use baking soda in its various applications are clear and easy to understand. Don't pass this book up!

A Fun and Very Interesting Book By Kevin Lintner After purchasing this book, I was amazed to find out there was so much I didn't know about something as common place as baking soda. For instance, the use of baking soda can be traced as far back as 3500 BC where the Egyptians used it as part of their mummification process. There are many claims regarding the health benefits of sodium bicarbonate, some go as far as claiming it can cure Stage 4 cancer. This book does not dedicate much time to these claims but looks at proven uses for personal hygiene and housekeeping that everyone can use. i was very pleased with this helpful, interesting, and fun book.
