Zalar reads the Drakon Codex every night, for in it are the secrets of his ancestors. A direct descendant of the god Perun, he was ousted from his familial home and sent into exile at the tender age of sixteen. Now he’s back to claim what is rightfully his on the night of the Blue Jackets, facing his first true love Evanda, and clashing with the drug addict cousin who stole his throne. A short story set in Castle Drakon, a place of grave secrets and weeping stones.

I wish I had the prose to match Poppet’s in order to wax lyrical about My Sweet Matroyshka, but alas few can match her absolute gift with words. It’s sexy in the beauty of her prose, and also truly profound. Reading these otherworldly descriptions truly made my hair stands on end and sometimes I even held my breath as the images she creates swam before my eyes. There is a gathering in Castle Drakon, a gathering of the ancient blood of the Drakonian Order, and this night will see the ceremony that serves to bind its members together come to pass. Ivan is king, a man without scruples who stole his position when he exiled the true heir. Evanda is his queen, but she doesn’t get to lie in the bed she made with him when she turned her back on truth, for Ivan abuses the serving women of the castle to get laid. She is like the Russian nesting dolls, the matroyshka, for always there is another Evanda hidden in the layers, she is the wearer of masks.Zalar is the guest on this night, summoned because he has the blood that enables him to attend the gathering. He was in exile and has now returned to reclaim his birthright, to take back what is his by right and blood, but no one in the castle now remembers him. He and Evanda have a history, but she doesn’t recognise him, she is lost in one of her masks. She is cold like the jewels native to Russia she wears. The alexandrite ring on her finger changes colour, a property of the stone, but does it also reflect her reptilian nature? Zalar will strip it all away this night, for ‘if you have only your skin, your wealth is in your heart’.Amelia comes to Zalar to take a sample of his blood for testing (only those with the right DNA may attend the meeting) and stirs Zalar to compassion rather than the need for sexual release with her, when he begins to realise just how abused the women in the castle are. When he first arrives at Castle Drakon he overhears Evanda talking to Zelda, Ivan’s current favourite squeeze, admonishing her for sleeping with her husband too early in the day, for it makes Ivan less than useless and they have a meeting to attend this night. Zalar sends for Zelda, hoping she will release his tension, and discovers a woman bruised and misused. It sets him on the path to change. He is here for justice as well, not simply to reclaim his birthright. Meet also Darko, the squirmy butler who deserves to be felled from on high.Zalar wears a strange birthmark upon his skin, that of a lindi dragon, and only the true rulers of the House of Drakon have it, blood as ancient as Mother Russia herself. ‘In the land of the dead, the resurrected is king’. He discovers Saskia, who might be his daughter, for she too has the birthmark, but is she aware of her true path? If she is his daughter, Evanda deserves to pay for keeping her from him.Money is wasted on expensive vodka, champagne and chocolate delights, while the peasants serving the castle go hungry, are thin and without hope. The women are abused regularly, may not don underwear in order to be ever ready at the beck and call of the depraved Ivan, the man who stole the title of king. It is time for change. When the lights go out in the castle, we realise Zalar has the kind of dragon sight that allows him to see in the dark, a gift inherent in his ancient lineage. A race through hidden tunnels and catacombs ensues, in darkness using this special sight. Zalar has the Perun (the true god of his line) skeleton key, and he races to a place where he is anointed for the meeting to come, where only the true blood is able to use the key and open the door. Time is of the essence, and thus he races through darkness. Anointed, he returns to ‘the jesters pretending royalty’ to take back what is rightfully his. He seeks to open another door, into a place of true beauty and peace.I will not reveal more, for this story is like the Matroyshka doll, layer within layer, and you must read it to get to the levels of understanding nestled into this tale. Profound and beautifully written, there are hidden depths here ready for unmasking. This could be a full length novel; it has that much in it. Poppet excels again in her story-telling abilities, drawing you further and further in to see those layers. I am awed and you will be as well.

As always the story grabbed hold of me from the first word and held on right through to the last word. I found myself unable to stop once I started this great story. I won't give anything away, you need to read it for yourself. All I will say is this is another brilliant story by Poppet.

Zalar returns to his ancestral home to claim what is rightfully his and he does it with such panache I found myself mentally clapping for him.Brilliant story of a Russian family with a rich history one only dreams of.
