The Damned, by Algernon Blackwood

About the Author Algernon Blackwood (1869-1951) was born into a well-to-do Kentish family. His parents, converts to a Calvinistic sect, led an austere life, ill-suited to their dreamy and sensitive son. During adolescence, he became fascinated by hypnotism and the supernatural and, on leaving university, studied Hindu philosophy and occultism. Later, he was to draw on these beliefs and experiences in his writing. Sent away to Canada at the age of twenty, his attempts at making a living were wholly unsuccessful and shortly after his return to England, he began to write. The Empty House and Other Ghost Stories, published in 1906, was followed by a series of psychic detective stories, featuring John Silence, 'physician extraordinary'. His reputation as one of the greatest exponents of supernatural fiction began to grow. Chiefly known for his ghost stories, Blackwood wrote in many different forms within the genre. His most personal works, however, are his 'mystical' novels, for example The Centaur, where he explores man's empathy with the forces of the universe. Blackwood also wrote children's fiction. A Prisoner in Fairyland was adapted into the play (later the musical), Starlight Express. Later in life, Blackwood turned to writing radio plays, and in 1947 he began a new career on BBC TV telling ghost stories. He received a knighthood in 1949.

31 of 32 people found the following review helpful. Watch Out What You Think By Beth Kristen Nehme Blackwood explores the concept that the afterlife for each person is what they believe it will be. This book deals with the rising horror faced by the widow of a fanatically religious man who has twisted the christian religion to psychologically abuse and enslave his wife. Although the man has died, his belief structure lingers. The book is not an attack on God, but it is an open attack on the ways in which religion and the concept of God is often twisted by individuals to achieve power. If you think of the Spanish Inquisition, the Salem Witch Trials, the Nazis, Jim Jones, Charles Manson and the other modern cults, and the September 11th bombings you realize that this is a struggle happening all over the world every day.As you read of this one women's struggle and think that it is just one of many homes in which the struggle is ongoing, one cannot help but feel the chills.

Blackwood's prose is enjoyable, the story itself is slow at times, but it builds to a growing sense of horror, only to fall at the end to an anti-climax. The funny thing is that the readers are warned again and again in the story to expect such an ending. You might think of this as softcore Lovecraft.I mention such a spoiler in the review because I feel that forwarned a reader should enjoy the story much more for what it is than what it might have been.

2 of 2 people found the following review helpful. I pretty much love anything by this author By Ms Beastle I pretty much love anything by this author. This one is the most recent I've read, and I was (as usual) very pleased with the creepy factor, the writing style, the atmosphere created...I'm ready for another one now.

Exciting middle of the trilogy sets the stage for a Grande Finale By James Tepper EXTINCTION EDGE (THE EXTINCTION CYCLE BOOK 2) picks up right where its predecessor quit. In the middle of an all-out war against a rogue bioweapon-induced full on apocalypse. Author Smith still has more tricks up his sleeve. After Dr. Kate Lovato comes up with a molecular biological counter weapon for the mutated Ebola/Vx99 super soldier serum that has transformed most of humanity into maddened, ravening, mindless beasts, you'd think all would be well. Uhhh...., sorry not this time. Although the "cure" does what it is supposed to, i.e., render the mutated Ebola virus once again deadly, killing off most of the infected, there is an unforeseen side effect. A very nasty one. About 10% of the infected are not killed by the new virus because were immune to Ebola in the first place (Ebola in actuality really has a kill rate of "only" 60-90%). Worse, the virus triggers rapid epigenetic changes in the survivors, changing them and imbuing them with enhanced sensory abilities, strength, speed, Spiderman-like wall crawling abilities and worst of all, an constantly evolving sort of intelligence. These "Variants" are far more difficult to kill than the original Ebola/Vx99 victims and they're smart. Maybe too smart. While the middle third of a trilogy often proves to be a letdown, a kind of filler between the opener and finale in a series, this time Smith doubles down on the tension and excitement. There are a couple of new characters introduced and one of Beckham's boys who was critically injured in the first novel along with another soldier who lost both legs in another battle are left to defend Kate et alia on Plum Island while Beckham and his company are back in NYC battling for their lives. As in the first book, chapters alternate between events on Plum Island and NYC, and the characters seem real, including a crazed general who refuses to believe what is in front of his eyes.I liked this novel very much and am now impatient for the finale but I suspect I have a bit of a wait on my hands.Recommended for fans of military sci-fi and those who like the style of Crighton, Rollins and Beck.JM Tepperdisclaimer: The author kindly sent me an ARC of this novel upon my request in exchange for a no-strings-attached review, after I read the first in the series and asked for more.

It’s funny now how I thought at the end of book 1, “well they’ve made the cure so now I guess it’ll just be about picking off these zombie monster things.” Oh, how wrong I was. NSS has much more in store for us than what you might think, with some new cool characters too! Firefighter Meg’s storyline is a really interesting angle. I hope to see more from her in the next book. She’s definitely the type of bad ass you want to see and have on your team when the end of the world comes. Fitz is another new guy you want on your team, sort of an unlikely hero type, but really good. NSS gets more into his characters in this one and makes the plot more and more interesting. He isn’t about making it easy, for anyone. And you find out what happened with Horn's family!! I'll say no more on that. You have to read to find out. There were several moments during the book when I cursed the fact I had to be somewhere else because I really NEEDED to know what was going to happen next because he threw another crazy thing into the mix. I was really happy to read what happens with Beckham and Lovato – don’t worry, it’s not a romance novel, just good connection. Lovato just keeps getting better and better. I'm loving the character development NSS is getting into. I'm sure we'll learn more even about the characters in the next book.I had the privilege of reading an advance review copy so I’ve had time to reread parts and mull it over, but I still have no idea how they’re going to get out of this new Variant situation. I can’t wait to find out!!

7 of 7 people found the following review helpful. Most excellent! Can't wait for Extinction Age!!! By Nathan First let me say that I received an advance copy of Extinction Edge from the author (Thank You!) and here is my honest review.Oh man what a ride! Our story continues with the aftermath of deploying VariantX9H9, Dr. Lovato’s bioweapon. However the remaining Variants are changing and doing some pretty weird stuff. Of course we have the people in charge, the acting president and his general, not following Dr. Lovato’s advice. Do they EVER listen to the scientists???? The budding romance between Reed and Kate continues to grow but will his unwavering dedication to killing the Variants drive a wedge between them? We also get to see how people who have known and worked together in the old world behave toward each other in the new world when the going gets tough. I hope I would be one of the good guys in the end. There are close calls, tense moments, lots of running, creepy things and happy moments on this rollercoaster!A new character was introduced, Fitzpatrick, that quickly became a favorite. There’s something special about him and I guess you’ll just have to read the book to find out! Looking forward to more of him in Book III.What will Dr. Lovato’s next move be? Will she have to create her own monster? Just what are those damn Variants up to? Will the Variants die out or will humanity be confined to Plum Island for the rest of their lives? Inquiring minds want to know!I know I can’t wait for book III to find out!!!!If you have not read Extinction Horizon (Book I) then what is your problem and I hope a Variant gets you! Go get it now!

A light- hearted look at magic and mayhem By Nereid Another magical journey with the Witch Fairy that is always fun and entertaining and there is never a dull minute. Sirens are threatening everyone she loves and Xandra will stop at nothing to protect the people she cares about. She is way too honest in her opinions sometimes but at least you know where you stand with her and I would rather have her as a friend than an enemy any day.

I'm not a fan of books where everything is easy. I like funny, snarky characters that make me laugh. These books are wonderful, start at the beginning you will love every book. ps, Bonnie I dearly love Taz..... He makes me laugh and want to run get me some bacon.

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. As always I love this series By Stacy Delong As always I love this series. There were a few twists that kept it interesting. This is one of the only many series books that I continue to follow. It gets better as the series progresses and I cannot wait for the next one and become impatient. I bide my time with Kellen's tales in between the series. WOuld recommend this book to anyone who enjoys a little bit of the supernatural with a twist of comedy.

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. It keeps getting better! By Caitlin Popplewell The book opened unexpectedly, but in such a way that I was excitedly looking for a new character or two. But then it simply have more depth to the character we already know, and that made it all the better! The books in and still learning things about the main fellow is something a reader rarely experiences and Rain is doing it.I also really loved to see progression in the characters' personal lives, it went better than I could have hoped for our main couple, even bringing back another lovable little guy in their lives. It may be because I recently had another child myself, but the way it was all written out really hit some more personal notes with me, and I loved it.Whether in this series out another, I look forward to reading more from this author. :)

Had read the entire Elemental series in a few weeks then when I saw the Guardian Series I started reading the series voraciously. I found this book to be the very best one yet! I highly recommend her books, not just for the fantasy value but for the twists, turns and wonderment of the story lines, and the laugh-out-loud humor interspersed throughout. I feel as if I know these characters, and I not only care what happens to them but anxiously await to find out what becomes of them by the end of each book, while anxiously awaiting to start the next volume.

Usually things go downhill a little after the first novel ,but this series keeps getting better. New characters are introduced and old enemies may not be what they seem. Mrs. Oxford is a talented writer and her books flow. I found myself thinking about this book all day after i finished it. That is a sign of a great novel. Im told i wont gave to wait too long for book 4 "The Demon's Game" and am very glad as that would be cruel and unusual punishment. Read this series!!!

If you enjoy the works of Girl Scouts of the United States of America then we highly recommend this publication for your book collection.Scouting (or the Scout Movement) is a movement that aims to support young people in their physical, mental and spiritual development, that they may play constructive roles in society, with a strong focus on the outdoors and survival skills. During the first half of the 20th century, the movement grew to encompass three major age groups for boys (Cub Scout, Boy Scout, Rover Scout) and, in 1910, a new organization, Girl Guides, was created for girls (Brownie Guide, Girl Guide and Girl Scout, Ranger Guide). It is one of several worldwide youth organizations. In 1906 and 1907 Robert Baden-Powell, a lieutenant general in the British Army, wrote a book for boys about reconnaissance and scouting. Baden-Powell wrote Scouting for Boys (London, 1908), based on his earlier books about military scouting, with influence and support of Frederick Russell Burnham (Chief of Scouts in British Africa), Ernest Thompson Seton of the Woodcraft Indians, William Alexander Smith of the Boys' Brigade, and his publisher Pearson. In the summer of 1907 Baden-Powell held a camp on Brownsea Island in England to test ideas for his book. This camp and the publication of Scouting for Boys are generally regarded as the start of the Scout movement.

When we're working on a certain badge, I read what the requirements were for that particular badge from back then and they always get a kick out of it!

Great to compare scouting then to scouting now. I can look through the different sections to compare the guidelines. My little Daisy is too young to read it easily herself, but still enjoys little bits of information from the "Really OLD days of Girl Scouts"!

By Jennifer Sharpe This is one of those books/authors that you really have to "get" to enjoy. The book is positively dripping with sarcasm and cynicism, and offers little to no new information or practical tips for reducing kid-related clutter. The book is liberally sprinkled with curse words, and the author uses strange texting terms like WTF and "cuz" instead of because, as if that were normal and appropriate for a quality book. Be prepared for the author to call your children all kinds of derogatory names as well.If you can get past some of the quirks in this short read, you can understand the heart of the book, which is basically that we are materialistic, guilt-ridden parents, who are the cause of our own clutter and our kid's clutter, and if we can understand that, we can decide for ourselves whether we'd rather live with the clutter or learn to purge mercilessly. I borrowed this book with my kindle unlimited subscription, so it was free to me. If I had purchased this book, I would've been kind of disappointed that it wasn't more practical and more professionally written.

Today!Don't waste any more time.I was about to give up, I was so over the kid's stuff being everywhere, all over the living room floor, the kitchen bench, the dining table, my study, even my shower wasn't safe for crying out loud. I was seriously considering moving to a new house, one with a parent's retreat that would be completely off limits to kids and their never ending yellow, blue and red toys.Well, maybe it wasn't quite that bad but it wasn't far of it either.Read the book, you won't regret it.

Bite me!

I was a lonely, curvaceous BBW at a boring 9-to-5. Leo and Zane were shifter billionaires looking for their mate. When Leo and Zane saw me, they knew that I was their soul mate. But could I stand their dark secret, an unspeakable curse they forever bear inside? WEREHIPSTERS. Get it before it's hot. Note: Werehipsters is a STANDALONE SHORT with steamy moments. If you don't like to get hot and bothered, don't pick up the book. If you enjoy getting a little giggle with your wiggle, pick this up. It's for fun people with a sense of humor. Enjoy!

  • From the Back Cover EXCERPT: My skin burned. I gritted my teeth. The Change felt like it lasted a long time, but it was probably only a couple minutes. I opened my eyes. Was I wolf? A bear? A lion? The mirror reflected my body back at me. I had full-sleeve tattoos all over my arms. A gauge was in one ear, and I had multiple piercings on the other. I had random chunks shaven off of my hair, as if my hairdresser really hated me. For some reason, I had on a pink dress, the kind that had been popular when my grandmother was young. The way it itched told me it was what was euphemistically called "pre-worn." I turned to look at Leo. He had an unkempt mountain-man beard that looked like a small, furry creature had attached itself to his face like a parasite. His body had shrunk a foot, and he was now smaller than me. His skin could be used as a reflective device. Instead of the smooth, tan skin of before, he had skin paler than milk.  I turned to look at Zane. He, too, had shrunk. He was wearing a white v-neck and shutter shades, the kind that serve no purpose other than annoying people. His beard was long, and it looked like he had never been acquainted with a razor. He had gauges in both ears and a piercing through his nose. He pushed his ironic eyewear up his nose.  "My goodness! What are you? What am I?"

7 of 8 people found the following review helpful. Nope. By Ivy D. I really wanted a good giggle. Sigh. It’s less than a novelette, though while you’re reading, it feels like it goes on forever. This is the gist of it all:"Say you're ours.""I'm yours.""Say you'll mate us forever.""I'll mate you.""Tell us to bite you.""Bite me!"Yes, that's actual dialogue. Kept waiting for the funny, wondering when the hell it was going to kick in and it finally did ...at 74%. For about four or five paragraphs. It was so completely ridiculous that I did a mild giggle. Then the remaining 20% is a preview of the next “book.”Yeah, that's 15 minutes of my life I can't get back. The Bottom LineHumor’s subjective, but this didn’t work for me, so I can’t recommend.

7 of 9 people found the following review helpful. Too Funny! By Amazon Customer Just as the title implies, this is a comedic little parody of the popular shifter romance genre.Don't take it too seriously, just go with it. It's a very short read with lots of laughs. The author is obivously having a blast writing these cute little stories!

When this book was originally released in 2013 under a different title, I really liked it. This version is slightly different and equally as engaging. The main characters, attorney Julia Blair, and sports doctor and part-time cowboy, Chase Cooper, are likable, real and have a ton of chemistry.Julia and Cooper have known each other since high school. In fact during that time, Cooper was best friend's with Julia's funny and outgoing twin sister Mari, even though they both secretly harbored a crush on one another. Now years later, Cooper and his two buddies are feeling nostalgic and decide to contact the women that "got away" for a chance of happiness. Cooper and his friends own and operate a dude ranch.Julia arrives at Cooper's ranch completely bewildered. She knows that Cooper was expecting Mari, not the quiet, conservative Julia. As luck would have it, Julia is the one who Cooper really wants. Their relationship starts out very casually, but by the end of the week, they are madly in love and experiencing the best sex of their loves. This is an extremely steamy novella. I just loved how Julia and Cooper came together, while slowly sharing their secrets with one another. If you are looking for a quick-paced, well-written, sexy novella, give this book a shout.Complimentary copy provided by the publisher via NetGalley.

If you are a fan of second chances and taking risks then this book is for you. In Slow Burn, Ms. Cathryn Fox introduces two high school "friends" get their chance at love and romance. I use the term friends loosely since technically they weren't friends since the hero, Coop was best friends with Julia's twin sister, Mari. Fast forward to ten years later, Coop gets his second chance to finally admit to Julia that she has always been the girl on his mind. Julia always assumed that Coop only liked and wanted Mari and had blinders on when it came to her but as it turns out she was wrong. When Julia arrives at Coop's ranch, she didn't expect the same feelings she had for Coop ten years ago would be just as strong. As Coop and Julia begins to spend time with each other, feelings begins to intensify and it is up to Coop to make Julia see that she is the only person he wants. Will Julia be able to let Coop into her life?Slow Burn was the first book that I have read from this author and it surely won't be my last. I thoroughly enjoyed this quick, light, fun, and sweet read!!! This book was well-written and had lovable characters. So if you are looking for a quick romance escape then I highly recommend Slow Burn by Cathryn Fox!!! There is nothing like a hot sexy cowboy and attorney to heat up those e-readers.~Michelle of Four Chicks Flipping Pages

By Franci Neill I'm a big fan of Cathryn and have read everything she's published over the last few years. Slow Ride, the first book in the Playing For Keeps series is another book that I loved. The whole concept of this book - trying to find the girl who you wished you had the guts to approach in "that way" in high school to see if the spark is still there.Enter Coop, very handsome and sexy "cowboy" and Julia a beautiful young lawyer.... when they were in High School, Julia thought Coop had a thing for her identical twin sister so her shock in receiving a mysterious invite to a Dude Ranch for a week took her by surprise. Her dilemma on whether to attend or not continued until she actually arrived at the Ranch. The chemistry between Coop and Julia is swoon worthy. Both of them have grown into themselves over the last several years allowing them to explore the feelings they've had for each other all these years. The setting of the Ranch is beautiful, tranquil and relaxing opening Julia's eyes to both Coop and what's possible in her life. And what she sees excites. Adding Coop into the deal and you can only imagine how hot and steamy these two will be together if they can manage to get out of their own way. The steaminess factor between our H/h is enough to fog up your windows! Can Coop and Julia overcome what they perceive the other wants both from their partner and in their lives? Well, you need to read this great book to get the answer to this question!

You'll breeze through it, thinking or being amused with the accuracy, the deception and the probability of it all. This is a tale for the lads and a tale for the hens. The husbands and the wives. As the sergeant said to his officers before they went on patrol in my favorite TV show, Hill Street Blues, "Be careful out there." Great writing and great dialogue. A fun read. I may be slightly biased in that I was sitting with the author at an outdoor pub when the idea for this story was born. But I think not. Good idea. Better story.

The "Master of Suspense", Alfred Hitchcock, hits another bullseye with his 1956 production of "The Man Who Knew Too Much". Purists have been known to complain that they prefer Hitchcock's original 1934 version of the story to the lavish, widescreen, color version starring James Stewart and Doris Day, but if viewed side by side, both films stand on their own as classic Hitchcock. The 1956 "Man" unfolds like a beautiful book, methodically, deliberately, and compellingly. Stewart plays an American doctor and Day is his wife, a retired singer. They are vacationing with their young son, Hank, in Morocco, when they become embroiled in an International incident involving a planned assasination. Their son is kidnapped and taken to London. Day and Stewart follow, where they attempt to get some answers and to locate their son, on their own, without the help offered by Scotland Yard. The film reaches it's exciting climax during a concert at Albert Hall in which Day suddenly realizes what is about to occur. Without giving away some of the intricate plot twists and turns, "The Man Who Knew Too Much" is like a breathtaking ride on a state of the art rollercoaster. You cannot help but get caught up in the plight of Stewart and Day. James Stewart and Doris Day seem like a real married couple, so easy and comfortable is their onscreen chemistry. They banter and interact convincingly but there is also a strong indication that there may be some tensions lurking beneath the outer veneer. Both actors play their roles with expertise and Day, in particular, shows range and versatility in her performance, being especially memorable in the justly celebrated Albert Hall scene and in an earlier scene when Stewart informs her that their son has been kidnapped. The growing realization as to what he is telling her is reflected in Day's facial reactions. Hitchcock has once again assembled a first-rate cast of supporting players including his long time musical collaborator, Bernard Herrmann, who appears onscreen for the first time, playing himself while conducting an original piece of music during the Albert Hall sequence. The team of Livingston and Evans composed a song for Day to sing to her son as part of the plot. The tune, "Whatever Will Be, Will Be"(Que Sera, Sera), became a megahit, selling millions of records, winning an Oscar as best song and becoming one of Day's signature tunes. It plays an intricate role in the storyline, being introduced naturally and being reprised as part of the picture's denouement. The queues that formed at box-offices all over the world when "The Man Who Knew Too Much" opened in the summer of 1956, were a tribute to the talents of Hitchcock, Day, and Stewart, and to the public's continuing fascination with quality entertainment. To this day, the film remains one of Hitchcock's best films from his 1950's period. A movie that is well worth viewing.

Chesterton was happy to do some spoofery of the deductive detective genre -- his detectives seemed to depend more on the knowledge of human nature. One good example is Horne Fisher, the star character who solves bizarre little mysteries because he "knows too much... and all the wrong things."The first story opens with a reknowned book critic stumbling across a dead man with his head bashed on. Fortunately Fisher is fishing nearby, and is able to deduce who killed the poor man, when, and cleverly figures out the best (and most theatrical) way to get results. In each story, Horne deals with another strange mystery -- the framing of an Irish "prince" freedom fighter, the vanishing of a priceless coin, a man killed off in the Middle East, an eccentric rich man dies during an obsessive fishing trip, another vanishes during an ice skate, a bizarre dispute over an estate, and most shockingly, a statue crushing his own uncle...Chesterton was a good mystery writer. He could spin up bizarre little crimes (murder, theft, treachery) for a variety of colourful reasons, from the political to purely psychological. "The Man Who Knew Too Much" is a good example of that, and it shows Chesterton veering into more politically-charged territory than in his other mysteries, with the Irish-English conflict, spies and impending war.But these mysteries also have Chesterton the philosopher/theologian/thinker. He writes in colourful, poetic prose ("as if the world were steeped in wine rather than blood"), and has brief moments where Horn muses on human nature."Patriotism is not the first virtue. Patriotism rots into Prussianism when you pretend it is the first virtue," he remarks at one point, as an example. Through him, Chesterton gives us brief little insights into what he knows too much of -- a worldview remarkably simple, but very insightful."The Man Who Knew Too Much" is an odd kind of detective -- instead of the quirky detectives or deep thinkers, Horn is rather melancholy and plaintive, almost tormented by his own knowledge. This comes to a peak in the bittersweet final story, where Horne finds himself in a wretched situation, with shocking results."The Man Who Knew Too Much" is a solid collection of detective stories, but underlying the mysteries are Chesterton's deeper looks at human nature. Excellent reading.

Corzine If you think you're a cynic about politics (or more precisely, about politicians) you've got nothing on GK Chesterton. This is another of his episodic novels in which a series of short stories that stand alone end up making up one single story with the last one bringing all of the threads together and raising them to a climax and resolution. The eponymous man who knew too much is Horne Fisher. And what he knows is all of the key people of the ruling class in England, the tawdry secrets of their personal lives, and the odd and indirect ways that these deform the laws, policies, and administration of justice in the realm. Hypocrisy and gentlemanly corruption are the air they breathe. He knows that most of what you read in the papers is nonsense. In his own words, he knows "everything that isn't worth knowing."In these eight stories of mystery and crime, Fisher's peculiar knowledge allows him to discover who committed each crime and why. Often enough the criminal must go unpunished lest worse things follow. Sometimes the victim is in fact more guilty than the criminal. The other main character is an honest but naive reporter, Harold March, whom Fisher meets and befriends in the first story. March plays Dr. Watson to Fisher's Sherlock Holmes in all eight stories. Until the redemptive climax, Fisher is a sort of tragic figure, upright, honest and unwilling to participate in the wrongdoing, but also unwilling, seemingly unable, to expose his family and their plutocratic circle.I doubt whether England was quite as rotten in 1922 as Chesterton believed. I'm quite sure that America in 2010 is not. But then perhaps that just makes me the man who knows too little. One way or the other, this is a delightful book and highly recommended.

Similar to the Father Brown books By Jesse Rouse The Man Who Knew Too Much is a collection of eight short mystery stories which reminded me greatly of Chesterton's Father Brown stories, except these were not quite as good. I dislike mystery stories where the main character solves the mystery with the aid of a clue that the reader did not have access too. That was one of the reasons why I really like Chesterton's Father Brown mysteries, because if you pay close enough attention and think enough, you can come to the correct conclusion yourself before the answer is announced. Unfortunately, Chesterton does not write all of these stories in that way (though a few of the eight are), and it makes them not as much fun to read, though they are still very good.In terms of content, Chesterton does a fabulous job of bring up moral issues (for example, do we tell the public the truth about murder if it will be harmful to the public?) in these mysteries, and they really make you think. As always, Chesterton has also intersperced the stories with witty yet deep phrases which also make you think, and if you are an underliner you will find many things to underline. In conclusion, this is a good book, but if I were you, I'd read his Father Brown stories before I read these.Overall grade: B+

    Wessex Tales, by Thomas Hardy

From Library Journal Hardy tests the skill of any narrator. Not only must the reader dramatize differences of age, sex, region, and class among the characters who inhabit the fictional county of Wessex in the last century, but the straight narration must also showcase the eloquence of Hardy's prose. Vincent Brimble manages all this with ease. Which is fortunate, since the seven uneven tales here might seem downright dull in print. The first and best piece, "The Three Strangers," pulls out all the stops: a violent storm on the downs, three mysterious strangers who seek shelter in a shepherd's cabin where a rousing christening party is in progress, and the booming of a cannon to announce the escape of a prisoner nearby. In other stories (e.g., "Fellow Townsmen") the characters seem wooden, with plots turning too much on coincidence. Woven through all, however, are lively descriptions of life in Somerset 50 years or so before Hardy's time: accounts of milking cows all day in a dark dairy ("The Withered Arm"), smuggling tubs of brandy over the cliffs ("The Distracted Preacher"), and preparing for the anticipated invasion of Napoleon ("A Tradition of 1804"). Recommended for classic literature collections.Jo Carr, Sarasota, Fla.Copyright 1994 Reed Business Information, Inc.

Review Hardy's novels, in my experience (admittedly a long time ago, when I was going through a serious misery-lit phase), are emotional marathons. They leave you drained, desolate, in shock but ultimately satisfied that you finished the course. Ever since listening to Clare Tomalin's biography, The Time-torn Man, I've been meaning to dig out Tess, Jude, Bathsheba, Eustacia and the rest of the Wessex clan, but it will be a mission. I need an incentive. Here it is. Five minutes into the second tale, The Three Strangers, you can feel the old Hardy magic beginning to work its spell. The scene has been set, where else but on his favourite stamping ground (trudging ground might be a better word), the bare, dark, rain-sodden, wind-lashed heath five miles from Casterbridge (Dorchester to you), where 'the tails of little birds trying to roost on some scraggy thorn were blown inside out like umbrellas'. In a small, lonely hut, shepherd Fennel, his dairymaid wife and 19 guests are celebrating the birth of a new baby beside a crackling fire with mead, victuals, music and dancing. Then comes a knock at the door. 'Walk in!' cries our merry host, the latch clicks and in comes a stranger, 'dark in complexion and not unprepossessing as to feature', hat 'hung low over his eyes', which take in the room 'with a flash more than a glance' and like what they see. 'The rain is so heavy, friends, that I ask leave to come in and rest awhile,' he says in a deep, rich voice. Leave is given and a pull of the mead mug, and minutes later there's another knock, and in comes a second dripping stranger, who turns out to be the hangman on his way to Casterbridge to top a sheep-stealer in the morning. I'd forgotten what a consummate yarn-spinner Hardy is. Roald Dahl's end-of-story twists are famous, but Hardy's tales surprise you all the way through, holding your attention as firmly as old Solomon Selby does his audience's at the tavern in A Tradition of 1804. As soon as they see him take his pipe from his mouth and smile into the fire from his inglenook seat, they know what's coming. 'The smile was neither mirthful nor sad, not precisely humorous nor altogether thoughtful. We who knew him recognised it in a moment. It was his narrative smile.' And thus begins the wonderful tale of young Selby's encounter on a Wessex clifftop with Old Boney himself, recce-ing the long-planned invasion of England with one of his Frenchie generals. Next stop, The Return of the Native. --Sue Arnold - The GuardianOriginally published in 1888, Hardy's classic collection of short tales set in early 19th-century Southwest England examines the lives of everyday folk, many of whom go through otherworldly occurrences. Neville Jason deftly narrates this audio edition. With only minor shifts in tone, Jason lends each character a distinct voice that is easily recognisable to listeners. Additionally, Jason's narration possesses an eloquence that will delight listeners and transport them to another time and place where the magical was indeed possible. While the book's language may seem dated to some listeners, Jason does his best to incorporate a slightly modern approach into his performance, and this brings a sense of immediacy to the stories. An enjoyable listen from start to finish and a must for Hardy fans. --Publishers WeeklyHardy's collection of stories takes place in an imaginative locale, Wessex, based on the area around the author's home in Dorchester, England. Combining the real with the imagined, Hardy unfurls the ironies of everyday life; his introduction gives the listener an appreciation of what is to come. Neville Jason, an experienced actor and reader, is virtually flawless in rendering these vignettes. His diction, pacing, and inflection are spot-on, glorifying these tales of love, death, and the seeming supernatural and presenting the listener with a veritable audio Masterpiece Theatre. The dialogue is rendered as ably as the narrative. --Michael T. Fein, Central Virginia Community College, Lynchburg

About the Author Thomas Hardy, (1840-1928) was a novelist, short story writer, and poet of the naturalist movement, who delineated characters struggling against their passions and circumstances. Spectacular Stories By HardyBoy64 I'm convinced that Thomas Hardy is one of the greatest writers in the English language because he mastered so many different literary genres. He was a master poet, and his novels have received great attention, as they should have. His short stories, however, seem to have received less attention, which is a shame. These stories are beautiful examples of how well-written literature can capture the fragility of life, affairs of the heart, and human sentiments which Hardy masterfully couches in the cultural and regional traditions and lifestyles. My favorite story here is called "Fellow-townsmen" where Hardy shows us town life mixed with love and the many regrets associated with it. These are stories of hangings, mystic manifestations, ghost-like appearances, foreigners and smugglers all in the English rural landscape of Wessex. Hardy portrays the ever-changing life in this countryside through characters whose lives are like flower blooms blown around in the Wessex wind.Highly Recommended reading! Also read the other collection of short stories by Hardy called "Life's Little Ironies".

5 of 5 people found the following review helpful. Immersive By Deb An excellent anthology of tales from yore. I used to think that O'Henry (nee William Sidney Porter) specialized in the 'twist in the tale', also called 'O'Henry twist'. But now I'd say Hardy beats him hollow. The bonus is the usual rich description of locale - the land, the flora & the fauna, the distinctive characteristics of the people (both physical and as to the disposition). Once you get the taste, Hardy has this uncanny ability to keep you mesmerized; even in tales which are not 'mystery stories' in the conventional sense, a Hardy tale is as good as (or better than) any page turner. It keeps your attention riveted, and you can almost feel the terrain and the people as if walking around you...

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. A Brilliant Storyteller By CJA I read a couple of Hardy's novels 40 years ago and forgot just how good this guy is. He can write short stories too. They tend to be leisurely affairs, longer and more deliberate than you commonly find in this post-Hemingway world. But after a slow beginning he draws you in and you are hooked. Sometimes there is a surprise ending; usually there is some emotional wallop at the end. His heroes tend to be common rural folk and he likes to set his stories in the early 1800s, though the collection was published in 1888.For the most part, Hardy is a critic of conventional morality and social constraints. As a consequence, his stories play well to the modern reader.Magnificent work.
