I'm simply not impressed with the stories written by Al Ewing and Rob Williams together (Chapter 1 and 2) and two by Al alone (Chapter 4 and 5). Some of them were simply a bit too silly and others seemed bland. Frankly, the story written by Rob Williams (Chapter 3) alone was a bit better than the rest and I think it would have been much better if it was stretched out a chapter more or two, building up more of the mystery. Maybe I'd enjoy more of Rob's stories if he goes solo for the Doctor Who line.Simon Fraser as an artist...no, just no. He's not a terrible artist and there were a few scenes that were impressive, such as the spread out of the planet's past and future in Chapter 2. However, his artwork came across a bit shoddy in places and failed to capture the likeness of Matt Smith. Simon needs to put more practice on drawing a teary eye because it looked like he had Alice's eyeballs melting down her cheeks. I think Simon would be a decent artist for a comic line that doesn't require in capturing a real person's likeness. I like Gary Caldwell's color palette though and I am curious to see how he'd use his coloring talent for a different artist.Boo Cook is a better artist but he too failed to capture Smith's likeness. I've found Cook's art too clean for my liking - fewer lines and a lot of empty spaces which made the pictures less detailed. Just not very dynamic. Hi-Fi's coloring doesn't compliment Cook's art very well because he likes bright colors which made Cook's art look sparse. I think a colorist that have the inclination for muted colors would be a better choice for Cook's art of few lines and empty spaces.I am hoping that there will be some variety of writers and artists for the Eleventh Doctor line, allowing us to find ones that have the IT factor like the Tenth Doctor did with Nick Abadzis and Elena Casagrande. Perhaps the Matt Smith Doctor is simply a difficult character to capture in writing and drawing?

Best Dr Who comic I have read in years By Brax I loved it!Let me start by saying that I have been a Doctor Who comic aficionado since long before there was a new series. Back then we had Marvel (for a brief minute), DWMs, and much later IDW. Most of these runs fall into mediocrity due to publishers inflexibility to go beyond what is current in the program. The Doctor and Amy will be fine at the end of the tale because they have to be. The stories end up being stale one off adventures, ending where they began. However these new Titan tales break that paradigm! Intelligently they set these 11th Doctor stories while Amy and Rory are on there honeymoon. Who knows how long the Doctor was gone or how many people he traveled with during that time? In a remarkable short time I feel for this new companion. I can't wait to read Alice's tale. Will she fall in love, fall deeper into depression, get killed by a Dalek? Who knows and that's the journey. As to the writing, In past 11th comics it was a struggle to hear Matt Smiths voice in what I was reading. That is not an issue here. Al Ewing and Rob Williams channel 11th Doctor's whirling dervish nature right from the start and the pacing of the book is amazing. The authors go out of their way to make this journey feel less like a comic and more like an actual episode. I love the use of a the title cards, all it is missing is "Play Theme here". As to the art, I love it...true the art will not blow your mind and by that logic I get why some find fault in it. In my opinion both Simon Fraser and Boo Cook have something not seen in a main stream comic these days and It is hard to articulate what that "something" is it beyond simply saying "originality". Which does it no service but I feel that is exactly what their work is "original". I soaked up each and every panel. After Life, simply put, has been the best Doctor Who comic I have read in years. This book was a breath of fresh air in a format that has been extremely stale for years. I would recommend to all Doctor Who fans. I enjoyed it from cover to cover and I hunger for the next book!

Sensational Start with a Great New Companion By Adam Graham, Superhero and Detective Fiction Author This book collects the first five issues of the Eleventh Doctor series from Titan Comics. The story is set after Series 5 and the episode of the Christmas Carol and introduces the Doctor's new companion Alice Obiefune.Alice is a markedly different companion. She's in her 30s and is a lot more mature and level-headed than most Doctor Who companions. As the book opens, she's touched by tragedy in the recent death of her mother when she has a chance encounter with the Doctor. The scene where the TARDIS appears in her living room is very touching and sweet. She's also questioning her status. She doesn't want the Doctor to run her life or to run away from her problems. It's a very interesting dynamic, that's refreshing. The first issue, "After Life" features the Doctor's first meeting with Alice and manages to mix it a lot of poignancy with comedy, and a political satire. The second-fifth issues at first glance are two one shots and a two part murder mystery. Yet, all of them are actually interlinked quite cleverly as the Doctor deals with a paradise planet that's become an amusement park, how Alice's mom's favorite singer is so bland the Doctor doesn't notice him, and the aforementioned murder mystery, and the Doctor adds two more Companion.Overall, I really enjoyed both the writing and the art. This is simply superb and I wish this had been the type of story Matt Smith had gotten in Series 6.
