"A beautiful, intelligent, captivating close to the Irin Chronicles series." —Colleen Vanderlinden, author of the Hidden and Copper Falls series Only when the darkness falls can you see the light of the stars. For thousands of years, the scribes and singers of the Irin race have existed to protect humanity and guard the gifts of the Forgiven. They have lived in the shadows. They have kept their secrets. But the Irin aren’t the only race with secrets. Ava and Malachi have survived the darkness, but will they ever discover the light? A powerful cabal of the Fallen may hold the answers, but to surrender them, it wants the Irin race to finally face their enemies. Both those coming from the outside and those raging within. Working on my second Bachelors, two kids, dogs to train, Army and all of it's obligations, intended or not. I MADE TIME FOR THE SECRET! Book after book Elizabeth Hunter turns out one fantastic story after another. Actually, to call them stories is an insult. Like taking a vacation just sitting in my recliner. Vivid details, raw emotions, twists and turns, drama without the teenager angst. What more could you ask for?I fell in love with B and Geo. So when she introduced Malachi and Ava I was a little standoffish. I didn't want the Elemental World to end. I didn't want my favorite characters shelved, like so many authors do, so that they can move on. Turns out I had nothing to worry about. Well except that maybe I would like it more than the Elemental World. Yes, I said it.So, without further ado:The Secret should really be made plural. There is so much going on in this story- but don't worry it isn't too much to follow. More like getting the final exam in Chemistry and someone already gave you the answers. Things said before, in passing, now make complete sense. Hunches you had in The Scribe become true but with a twist! What a roller coaster ride Malachi and Ava have been on. When we left them in The Singer, they had just been reunited and it was rough. I think my Kindle was going to crack as I gripped the poor thing and read the anguish, the fear, the loneliness bleeding from the pages. I wanted nothing more than to have them back together, to live a happy normal life and the ability to kill angels, all of them, just so they could live in peace. Leave my Malachi and Ava alone they deserve it! She called him down from Heaven! The Secret picks up from where we left them in The Singer. Spending quality time alone reconnected and trying to understand the new versions of themselves. Malachi is still without his memories, a challenge for them both. Ava because she wants to support him and Malachi because he wants to remember. Both fearing they can't protect their beloved, the stranger next to them. But Ava has also changed. No longer helpless, the Secrets about her origins are slowly revealed. (I'm smiling because I know what happens but I can't tell you~ you'll just have to read it.) So a journey of discovery begins for them both. A hunt to figure out who they were so that they can understand better who they will be. But the more Ava learns the more she becomes afraid. Afraid for the humans, afraid for the angels, afraid for the Irin and Irina. Will she like what she learns? Will Malachi still love her? Will Malachi ever recover his memories? Will they be whole or will we lose one of them again? The balance must be maintained.I will leave you with a teaser, my favorite from the book and typical Malachi and Ava banter that I adore! From The Secret:They started up the stairs. Ava could hear someone snoring loudly.“I feel like it should bother me more that you’re so good at breaking and entering.”“Why?” Apparently, Malachi was no longer concerned with security. His voice was louder. He pulled out the earbud and tucked it in a small pocket of the vest he was wearing. “I’ve been doing this kind of thing for three hundred years. Trust me, it’s a lot less messy than it used to be. I don’t break and enter for personal gain. It’s just a useful life skill.”“Useful life skills are starting a campfire or… knowing how to tie really good knots.”“I know how to do those things, too.” He tugged her close and leaned down to her ear. “Give me one weekend without a world-changing revelations,” he whispered, “and I’ll show you my knot-tying skills.”The color rushed to her face. “Bad man. Very bad man.”He chuckled. “You wouldn’t be saying that by the end of the weekend.”

Their story was engrossing, deeply romantic and horribly heartbreaking. Book two brought Ava and Malachi back together and we were privileged to see how they came to know and learn to be with one another again in a journey that was hard to witness but felt realistic and rewarding. Book two also provided more world development with increased information about the Scribes, the Irina and the Grigori as well as the omniscient Archangels of the Fallen and the Forgiven. Book three continues with all these same groups but adds in the Grigora, the female children of the Fallen with their accompanying issues and complications, the return of the Irina to the council in Vienna, the politics associated with that and a look at some of the individuals of this group, a couple of surprising new family members for Ava and, finally, a passel of crazed young children who figure large in the final showdown and provide Malachi's next focus of anguish. Whew...there were times that I felt like I needed a playbook just to keep up with everyone. This book felt heavy and I found myself getting bogged down in the relationships between the various groups. I've read many richly detailed books in the past but the increased number of characters, increasingly complex intrigue and globe-trotting to one city after another in The Secret made for laborious reading from time to time. That said, once the big showdown was complete, the ending felt a bit rushed and anticlimactic. I could almost feel the author's desire to be finished with this story.Bottom line: there is no doubt that Ms. Hunter is a gifted writer with a deeply complex imagination. That said, the couple I fell in love with seemed to get lost in the intricacies of the plotting. I won't say I was disappointed by the end of their story, but I also won't say that I was thrilled by it.

By Killian Mcrae Few are the authors in this day and age who can pull off such a satisfying, complete, and beautifully written series that both delivers on everything you were waiting for, and still leaves you wanting more.THE SECRET is the divine completion of the Irin Chronicles trilogy. As always, what makes Hunter's characters so endearing is how realistic they are (even if they are mythical creatures). Just because Ava and Malachi have overcome the boundaries of Heaven, Ava having haphazardly brought Malachi back from the dead, their relationship and course is not smooth. There are still a number of issues they have to work out that ring true to any long-term relationship: what's the vision of their future, what are their goals, will they have a family? And why is Ava the way she is? How are there Irina in the world that remain unknown to the Irin? Could there be more, and where would they look?A trip to visit Ava's father only creates more questions than it answers. In Jasper, we find a tortured soul, one who clearly loves his daughter and yet, finds his own existence a daily challenge. When Malachi and Ava glean just enough information to lead them to the next clue about Ava's ancestry, they learn of the secret, one that angels war to protect and which could either cost or ensure the survival of the Irin. What follows is an unraveling of truth that the reader could have never seen coming, and yet, makes perfect sense in hindsight. Through a careful weaving of storylines and characters, Hunter satiates her readers, leading them through the inner workings of Irin society, its Vienna Council, and in the process, dismantling all our preconceived notions about what we thought MUST be true. This is a total rollercoaster of a read, but one that makes you want to run right back into the queue and do it all over again. Highly recommended to all readers of urban fantasy and paranormal romance.
