By Jane in Milwaukee To avoid catastrophe, please note the 2 Images above of the 2 different books of Mary Thomas.Mary Thomas was a legendary figure in embroidery. Not since Therese de Dillmont has one person done so much to further the mass publication of books on embroidery stitches. She was an English lady and was the editor of The Needlewoman magazine. By hearing thousands of questions from frustrated embroiderers on how to do any number of stitches, Mary went into overdrive: she studied hundreds of books and exhaustively researched embroidery in museums to become one of the greatest experts on needlework in her time. To our great benefit, Mary then sat down and sifted through all that she had learned and painstakingly diagrammed and explained over 300 stitches and in 1935 published:1) MARY THOMAS'S DICTIONARY OF EMBROIDERY STITCHES (1935; Gramercy Publishing Company, New York)Amazon has it wrong however: the following year, because of great demand, MARY PUBLISHED A SEQUEL:2) MARY THOMAS'S EMBROIDERY BOOK. (1936; Gramercy Publishing Company, New York)Subtitled: "The author of DICTIONARY of EMBROIDERY STITCHESshows how to combine scores of stitches into patternsand designs in many chapters including:SAMPLERS..............PETIT POINTPATCHWORKING......TAPESTRYQUILTING................DESIGNINGSMOCKING.............APPLIQUE"The first book has 234 pages. There is no Table of Contents but all the stitches are easily indexed in alphabetical order and by category. The second book has 304 pages and the Table of Contents breaks down the stitches into 30 categories, including the 8 in the subtitle, and concisely and thoroughly explains the history of each technique and how they are used. The second, it is ideal to own both books so that you can design your own works of art and understand the history of our beautiful craft. It is unfortunate that these 2 completely separate but inseparable books are confused. I have hundreds of needlework books and these 2 from 1935 and 1936 are among my most treasured and oft-used. Because you can find both books so cheaply here and they complement each other, do yourself a favor and get them both.

It is interesting as an instruction book of historical methods of needlework such as : blackwork, drawnwork, openwork, cutwork, methods of Scandinavian needlework, stumpwork, mideval tapestry, and more. These are explained and some are illustrated well. It is a good resource for anyone with basic needleworking knowledge, who wants to try something different..It does not contain any information about what we call embroidery or even crewel embroidery today. It does have a section on cross stitch, but there are better modern books for that.I don't recommend this to anyone but needlework historians.
