While the author's English is no doubt perfect by the standards of his day, it felt a little odd reading through the lens of more than a century of time. Of course if you go in for this sort of stuff, this is the book for you.If you can overlook some rather tediously long descriptions of terrain and a rather patronizing attitude to animals and the local populace, this book is a real page-turner. There are quite a few interesting stories in here with some edge-of-the-seat moments that will keep you hooked.

Surprisingly detailed and diverse treatise on natural and cultural history of the region By ian710 An enjoyable romp through the central india of Jungle Book fame, as told by a colonial forester with graceful language and wit. A dose of racism and superiority complex are signs of the times, and does not detract from the detailed treatment of topics as varied as cultural anthropology of the ethnic tribes, economics of rural areas and of course jungle lore from a seasoned hunter.
