More like just keeping anything distracting like a job By Jomoscho Night Shade is the first novel in the new Dreamweaver series by Helen Harper.I am a binge reader. I will gobble up a whole book series faster than chocolate. I agreed to read an advanced copy of this book in order to review. Now I am plotting on how I can move to Malaysia to “assist” her in finishing the next book in hopefully a long collection. I’m not talking Annie Wilkes help. More like just keeping anything distracting like a job, family/friends/loved ones or Internet usage out of reach. I’m reasonable.This book introduces us to a new world, an imperfect heroine and a dash of bad boy. Kudos to the author for bringing us into this unique land that she has begun to map out for us. Having read a lot of fantasy and UF, it’s refreshing to find myself somewhere new.Since it is the first book in a new series, it is very helpful that the pace is set at the correct speed to invite us in, without overwhelming. We meet a manageable cast of characters that I really look forward to seeing how their lives unfold.I highly recommend this book to folks looking to explore a new land where the heroine doesn’t know all the answers, isn’t looking for anyone to rescue her or falling over stupid at the first introduction to that rough, good looking man. There’s a hint at a potential love triangle, but that is far from the focus.I give it a solid four stars and look forwarding to continuing on the journey that is the Dreamweaver series.Now if I could just get people from the UK to not be afraid of using the letter Z…
3 of 3 people found the following review helpful. Interesting. By Preethi Night Shade, the first book of the Dreamweaver series has the typical Ms.Harper's feel to it. It starts slow. But by the time I was a third though the book, I was completely invested in the story and eager to know what was going on.Zoe Lydon is an extreme agoraphobic . She has never stepped out of her home for the past two years. She has five different locks for her front door, and is totally paranoid. So, when there is a continuous knock on her front door one day, Zoe is unwilling to open it. When she does, however, she finds an old man who is having a heart-attack. He warns her to be careful of the 'Department' before he dies. Since then, Zoe finds that she is able to enter the dreams of whoever she touches. If she doesn't touch anybody, she enters the Dreamland, the source of all dreams and nightmares. People who can enter this Dreamland willingly are called Travellers. Zoe is one of a kind- she is not only a Traveller, but also a Dreamweaver-one who can control and change outcomes in dreams, the first one in a long long time. Things are not what they seem in the Dreamland and Zoe has to learn whom to trust and whom not to, and learn to use her powers as a Dreamweaver fast, if she is to defeat the power hungry Mayor and the Department.I liked the concept of this story. The Dreamlands, the mares( or, should I say nightmares?), the castle, the Bubble were all fun to read. I do hope the thing between Bron-Zoe-Dante does not the evolve into a love triangle! Dante is an interesting character. I think there is more to him than we see in this book.I liked this book, which had its own unique flare typical to this author and some fantastical elements that made it interesting . Looking forward to the next book in the series.
2 of 2 people found the following review helpful. 4.5 Stars By Amazon Customer This book was a little slower starting then some of Helen Harper's other books but I ended up enjoying it just as much.One of the things I loved about the Blood Destiny and Bo Blackman series was that they offered something a little different in the over crowded urban fantasy genre. I found I loved Night Shade for exactly the same reason. It was different, the heroine had the right mix of courage and common sense (thank you Helen Harper for m.c's who are not tstl!), the romance is evident without being in your face dominant and the world building was engrossingly well done. This book has only solidified Helen Harper's position as one of my favorite U/F authors.
