"Most crafters are familiar with pompoms as embellishments for hats or scarves. The authors, a collective of Japanese fiber artists who call themselves Pompoms, banish the "embellishment-only" point of view with this series of whimsical projects that use creative placement of yarn and shaped trimming techniques to create pompoms featuring patterns or pictures. No specialized equipment is needed—either a piece of cardboard or a standard pompom maker will do; the magic is in the way the yarn is wrapped around the pompom maker. There’s a lot of counting involved, since the directions are given in number of wraps of each color of yarn, but the end results are surprisingly detailed. Standouts include a variety of pretty floral pompoms, as well as a pompom matryoshka set. VERDICT These easy projects require simple equipment and inexpensive supplies, making them appropriate for all ages."— Library Journal

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. Fun and simple By Bookphile Crafts aren't really my forte, but my 11-year-old loves them, and this book seemed like a fun activity for her. Of course, once my 5-year-old set eyes on it, he wanted in on the action too. The big upside to this kit is that making the pompoms is quite easy--once you figure out how to actually use the pompom makers. Neither my husband nor I could make heads or tails of it, so YouTube to the rescue. It doesn't help that the instructions that come with the kit feature a much nicer pompom maker than the one actually included in the kit.Once we did figure it out, the wrapping was ridiculously easy, but it did also make it obvious that the pompom maker that comes with the kit is a very cheap version. Neither kid had any trouble with wrapping the yarn, but my husband and I took care of actually wrestling the two halves into place and then doing the cutting and tying off. Doing so wasn't overly complicated, but it did require some dexterity as the two sides of the pompom makers kept coming apart, making it somewhat tricky to cut the yarn. This could be a real issue if you're not careful because the pompom will fall to pieces if it's not tied off properly, and the tying can't be done until you've cut the yarn. The cutting was a bit of a pain, though this probably had a lot to do with the makers falling apart while cutting. At any rate, you'll want a nice, sharp pair of scissors. Also, fair warning: if you intend to give this kit to kids, trimming the pompoms is a pretty messy business best done at a table or over a non-carpeted floor.While the instructions on how to make a basic pompom are hard to follow (again because the maker included with the kit is different from what's pictured), the instructions for the objects are easy. Each one consists of a chart showing which colors should be used and how many times you'll need to wrap those colors to get the effect you're looking for. Even once the yarn is long gone, the book will still be very handy as you can buy replacement yarn and use the instructions to make more of the objects, if you so desire.My other critique of this kit is that it doesn't include much yarn. After making one green and blue ball with the large maker and one red and blue ball with the small maker, the blue was gone. I'm not sure there's enough yarn to make one of each of the book's projects, and the hamburger project is a bit confusing as the kit doesn't seem to have all the colors required.These aren't big issues, but between the poor quality of the pompom makers that come with the kit and the small quantity of yarn, I knocked a couple of stars off. Still, the book is handy and this is a pretty easy craft that can be handled even by a novice.

But I only got into fancier creations this past year, and then realized much later that I might have unearthed old childhood memories of Steiff creations with my attempts at making birds.Just getting the thin booklet is worth the price of the kit. Because you can build from there easily. There is enough yarn for the pictured projects in the booklet, but the included plastic pom pom maker disks are something that has me scratching my head. I recommend that you buy the ones pictured in the brochure at a craft store instead.If you have lots of leftover yarn that isn't enough to make anything other than ugly granny squares blankets with, why not make cute and fun pom pom thingies instead?

By Earth Spirits Vine Review:This is the first time I have seen this craft and I now like it a lot. It would be the perfect thing to do when you have about an hour to spare. It takes about 30 mins or less for one pompom or longer if you are connecting 2 of them together. The different shapes included in the booklet are fun and cute. There is enough yarn to complete 3 or 4 of them if you even out the color usage.There are 2 different sized pompom frames. They are not the yellow and white colored ones that are in the book and on this Amazon listing. Instead they are red in color and are not as nice. They work for the task at hand however. The hamburger and apple are my favorites.The instructions and booklet could be made more informative and include more designs. The instructions should also reflect the new type of frame. Otherwise this would have received 5 stars!
