“We’re here.” The words jerk me awake--okay, I’m lying. It’s not so much the words as the ice cold marbles that are rolling down my shirt. Either way, I’m awake. I jump to my feet, doing a stupid dance to get the marbles out of my shirt. Max merely records me with his phone and I realize belatedly that Panther’s holding the marble bag. “That was cold,” I complain as the last marble drops to the floor and rolls away. “Your father told me how hard it was to wake you up,” he says simply. “We don’t have time to coddle you this trip, so get used to it. Everyone up, we’re here.” “It’s the middle of the night,” Jack says, looking out the window, “and we’re surrounded by trees. Shouldn’t we just pull down the bunks?” “Who said you could use the bunks?” Pan asks. “You’re going to provide your own sleeping places. Now out,” he says, pointing to the door. To my surprise, he pulls Cubby out of his chair and hands him over to me. “Him, too,” he says. “But--that’s--” “I hand him to the one that’s most capable in this setting, it’s not child abuse. It’s incentive--if my boy catches a cold, I’m going to be extremely irritated.” “Sir yes sir,” I offer stupidly.

He is a fifteen year old super with elementalist powers: He controls plants and earth. After the previous nine books, we finally get his perspective on life. His sister got her say in book one and Sunny was long overdue. This story focuses in two areas: SVSC (Super Villain Summer Camp) and his relations with Grandpa (Superior). The SVSC is a complete trip that runs afoul of real villains, super and not. What makes it so entrancing of a story is how well Sunny, a non–villain, does at the training camp for villains. Turns out he is so oblivious that he fits right in and kicks butt. The camp is hysterical. And yes…finally…Superior comes out of hiding. About time. Fortunately for the world, he stays retired, but becomes a real human being in the process. I now want to see more of that guy.I enjoyed it so much, I’ve already read it through twice in less than a week.

Blackford Let me start by saying that I am probably not the target audience for this book series. I am 53, male, and a former comic book junkie. This book series is aimed at a younger audience so my criticisms should be taken with that in mind. Let me start off by saying that I do indeed like these books and the way the author tells the story over all. My only real criticism comes at the way she portrays most of the characters as being in a hurry to get into a relationship with each other. It feels rushed and a little too staged. I personally prefer when a relationship is allowed to develop slowly through characters getting to know each other. In these books it tends to be like they immediately know exactly who they want to date. It just feels a bit forced to me.Personally I am glad that Amazon makes it so easy for authors to self publish here. So far I am liking about 80% of the self publishing authors who otherwise might not be able to get published at a major house. If you like this series but want something a little more complicated you might try Drew Hayes "Super Powereds" series.

For example I did feel a little bit cheated when the boys/ villains summer camp and tests set by Pan were cut short/never really happened during the book although they are teased not once, but twice as actually going to happen. Basically that made the whole book seem like it was shortened/missing two or three chapters in the middle were all that would have been. Also the end was anti-climatic to me with no real fight worth mentioning, just a couple real quick encounters where one side flees or offers token resistance instead of an actual hero villain battle. I have really enjoyed the series so far but am worried that the author might be getting a bit too formulaic and maybe even rushed in turning these books out. I love the characters and would hate to see that happen.
