The unique features about her animals is the information about the life and habits not found anywhere else. Her second book Butt Ugly Cats taught me more about cats than I have learned from living with cats for most of my life.The Butt Ugly Birds collection is amazing. Looking at the photos you will understand why the researchers feel that birds are descendents of dinosaurs. The Shoe Bill is an great example it looks more like a dinosaur than a bird.Many of these birds I know very well and they have been involved in my life. The one closest to my heart is the Moscovy Duck, who is not really ugly. I had five generations of these friendly creatures grow up in my front yard. I could write a book about these amazing birds. My stupid city rounded up and killed all the Moscovy Ducks because they were not native to Florida.A friend had a giant Wood Stork which spent most of it's time by their pool and I see the giant Brown Pelicans almost daily as it fishes the Florida waters. Author Daphne covers all the ugly birds including the standard ugly like the Condors and Vulture. But she also reaches out to the relative unknown birds. I was fascinated by the Sir Lanka Frog Mouth, this creature looks like a frog with feathers. Another very interesting example is the Helmeted Hornbill.This is a great book to share with the family. The photos are great and you will learn so much about the secret life of these Butt Ugly Birds.Highly Recommended!BTW... I am not into fish but I understand the author next book is Butt Ugly Fish, I will grab it the day it comes out as the first three books are so interesting and informative.

I thought it would be just a fluff book with pictures of ugly birds. I was pleasantly surprised with all of the content that went with each bird. I learned a lot and it was interesting. The one thing that was missing for some of the birds was a description of where they could be found. Each time I read about one of these ugly birds I was wondering if I could find it in my part of the world. Other than that I thoroughly enjoyed the book and am looking forward to more.

A great book especially for kids into ugly or gross things By Jenny Great book for reluctant readers, and kids into facts, and ugly creatures ... lots of boys and girls are going to like this book - my all time "ugly" bird is the Ibis ... nasty messy creatures and truly ugly. Thanks for this series I really enjoyed reading thisand my students loved this. A great book to get some real interest in the story.
