Introducing the Custard Protocol series, in which Prudence travels to India for Queen, country...and the perfect pot of tea. When Prudence Alessandra Maccon Akeldama ("Rue" to her friends) is bequeathed an unexpected dirigible, she does what any sensible female under similar circumstances would do -- she christens it the Spotted Custard and floats off to India. Soon, she stumbles upon a plot involving local dissidents, a kidnapped brigadier's wife, and some awfully familiar Scottish werewolves. Faced with a dire crisis (and an embarrassing lack of bloomers), Rue must rely on her good breeding -- and her metanatural abilities -- to get to the bottom of it all...The Custard ProtocolPrudenceImprudenceFor more from Gail Carriger, check out:The Parasol Protectorate SoullessChangelessBlamelessHeartlessTimelessFinishing School (YA)Etiquette & EspionageCurtsies & ConspiraciesWaistcoats & WeaponryManners & Mutiny

Review "Blending steampunk and urban fantasy in a colorful alternate Victorian England, Carriger presents a grand cast of characters on a harrowing adventure that stretches from England to India... Filled with lavish fashions, supernatural high society, and witty dialogue, this story is a fine introduction to a fabulous new series."―Booklist on Prudence"Carriger maintains a droll, tongue-in-cheek tone, and her protagonists are as concerned with witty banter and fashionable hats as they are with fighting for their lives. Series fans will enjoy this mischievous romp, which revisits old favorites while raising a new crop of charming characters."―Publishers Weekly on Prudence"Readers who delighted in Carriger's Parasol Protectorate will be entranced by the familiar cast and trademark wit of the new Custard Protocol series...Behind the delightful whimsy and snarky observations, there is a great deal of heart and soul."―RT Book Reviews on Prudence"The author's humor and affection for her outlandish characters is always appealing. A fun launch."―Library Journal on Prudence"Soulless has all the delicate charm of a Victorian parasol, and all the wicked force of a Victorian parasol secretly weighted with brass shot and expertly wielded. Ravishing."―Lev Grossman"The dialogue is as smart and snappy as ever, full of intelligent humor and artful verbal sparring."―All Things Urban Fantasy on Changeless"Changeless is equal to Soulless: witty, sexy, graceful, and unpredictable. With a few more novels, this delightful, Ms. Carriger will be challenging Laurell K. Hamilton and Charlaine Harris for the top of the New York Times bestseller lists."―Fantasy Magazine on Changeless"Carriger delivers surprises with every book, and this one is no exception. With action, intrigue, and above all, proper manners, this excellent series will have broad appeal to readers of steampunk, urban fantasy, and paranormal and historical romance."―Library Journal on Heartless"The world of Timeless is a unique recipe of steampunk and fantasy spiced with light sprinkling of romance. Its setting is rich for characters to romp about in, but the unbridled playfulness of the language and dialogue shines brightest."―The Miami Herald

Soulless won the ALA's Alex Award. A manga adaptation released in Spring 2012 and a young adult series set in the same universe -- the Finishing School series -- launched in Spring 2013. Gail is soon to begin writing a new adult series, The Parasol Protectorate Abroad (2015).

I kept putting the book down every dozen pages. The plot starts out as muddled over some mysterious tea deal, with much cross purposes tossed in, interrupting the flow of the story. Some elements made no sense. E.g., Skipping the send off party was inconsistent with the obsession with etiquette and was just an awkward excuse for the convenient vehicle of the characters' ignorance of their situation.Characters were less intriguing in this book than I expect from this author. There was a some character "recycling", where people from other books turned up with new names here. Percy is a doppelgänger for brother George of the Finishing School series and Quensel comes across as a blend of Soots and Felix. Primrose is Dimity, as a more self-possessed adult.Rue and Primrose have much less of the humor and dry wit that made Sophronia and Alexia so fun.The situations are as outrageous as the other series, but lacking any sense of danger or dread. Rue is just so unflappable, you always know it will work out... There is no suspense. There are appearances by major characters from Parasol, but they are flatly drawn and wan. Where is the crackle and snap they had in the prior books?I think I recall this book was much delayed by other projects. Perhaps that impacted the quality of this story?

However, Prudence s not quite up to her usual standard. Instead of new, unique voices for new characters, they sound like rehashes of earlier books...for example, Primrose just as well be Ivy or Dimity, less charming the third time around. Many older characters appear, but without their original cleverness. If you haven't read previous books, the characters are flat and none of them would be even slightly interesting. The book is often rather slow, in it's descriptions of landscape for example. Most of all, the wit and tongue in cheek humor is inconsistent and often missing. I have high hopes that Imprudence will be a return to Carriger's best delightful prose!

Good start to a new series By Nancy C All of Ms. Carriger's previous books have been loads of fun, and I expected nothing less here...and I wasn't entirely disappointed. I'd give this four stars, except the sloppy editing took away some of my enjoyment--pallet, palate, and palette are three different words that mean three different things. You can't use "pallet" for all three. Just saying. One or two typos are fine, but this went beyond that--I got the impression somebody hurried through the process and didn't care. So, a one-star penalty for rushing.Overall, this was mostly character development for what will (I hope) become a series, and very enjoyable. It lacks some of the richness of the earlier books, like "Soulless", although the author's clever use of language is thankfully still very much front and center. As other reviewers have said, you don't need to have read the Parasol Protectorate series to enjoy this, but you may find that you want to read that series to get the backstory on the adult characters.
