Twenty-one imaginative authors were paired up with twenty-one extraordinary kids. What makes these kids so special? They all have two things in common: They all have very big hopes and dreams, and they all have battled cancer.
Photographer Jonathan Diaz asked each of these remarkable children, "If you could be anything, what would you be?" Their answers were the inspiration for this one-of-a-kind book.
So turn the page and meet Korbyn the firefighter, Bre the dancer, Braelyn the superhero, William the dragon rider, Tristan the football star, and Rae the princess—and more— who were all photographed in full costume and digitally inserted into a background showing them as the hero of their own story. Then read the original short stories that were based on each child's specific dream.
True Heroes shares the powerful message that children can do hard things. They are dreamers. They are fighters. They are heroes.
All royalties will be donated to the Anything Can Be Project www.AnythingCanBeProject.com.

From School Library Journal Gr 4–8—Here are original fairy tales and hero stories written by authors such as Shannon Hale, Brandon Mull, Jennifer A. Nielsen, and Ally Condie, all inspired by Diaz's photography and his organization, Anything Can Be. Diaz takes vibrant photographs of children who are battling cancer. From being a baker to riding dragons to playing basketball with the Utah Jazz, the children live their fantasies through the photographs. In Liesl Shurtliff's "Jordan in Everywhere," Jordan experiences her final days and goes to a Wonderland-like place to find her father. In the photos, readers see Jordan dressed as Alice in Wonderland. In Condie's "The Drop-Off," Anna is going to a dance. She has a scar on her leg from an operation, and she debates with a friend whether she should kiss a boy at the end of the night. The accompanying image is of dancer Bre, who inspired the short story (Diaz merged two photos of Bre together to make her look as though she is leaping gracefully). Each tale is unique and begins with a short description of the child, his or her personal story, and the photograph. Scan codes direct readers to a behind-the-scenes video. VERDICT An inspiring anthology of well-told short stories accompanied by beautiful visuals.—Kris Hickey, Columbus Metropolitan Library, OH

First, the "modern-day fairy tales" are the perfect length for bed-time stories. And we needed something more than Hans Christian Andersen. :) My nine-year-old daughter loved Shannon Hale's tale of "Warrior Princess" when young Lilly prepares to battle a goblin army. And we loved Tyler Whitesides' story about little Fire Chief Korbyn and how he keeps saving the day. We seriously giggled and laughed throughout the whole story. And the photos in each chapter are amazing. But the second reason why I love this book is what it's teaching my daughter. Before each story there is a bio of a real child who is featured as the fictional character. And here's the clincher: the bio explains what kind of cancer he or she is fighting. For example, Lilly is the only known person to be born with a rare form of cancer and survive. And Korbyn, who is fighting an acute form of leukemia, has a dream to be a firefighter because he wants to help people, just like so many people have helped him. My daughter asked, "Why do these kids have cancer?" which led to a great discussion and then my daughter said, "If I get cancer I'm going to be strong like Lilly." Thank you, Lilly and Korbyn and all the other kids and authors who helped make this book happen. Thank you for showing us what a "true hero" really is.

I love the introduction of each child. You can really tell this book is an act of love. There is a QR code to go with each story which takes you to extra details, pictures and videos about the photo shoots. I have never seen that before. There are so many layers to discover. My 13 year old says Jon Diaz should make more books. He loves the stories and reading about each child. This book is a must have for everyone. You will walk away inspired and ready to face the obstacles in your life with strength. Beside the royalties from this book going back to Anything Can Be, you can support more of these children's dream photos by making your amazon purchases through smile.amazon.com under the Anything Can Be Project. Amazon will donate 0.5% of the price of your eligible purchases to this project. I can't wait to help more of these children's dreams happen.

My wife and I love to read such stories to our younger grandchildren, and to hear our older children recount the adventures they've been on in the books they've read. "True Heroes" is filled with exciting tales written especially for and about children battling cancer. True life stories of these children and their dreams, accompanied by gorgeous photos, and an individualized fantasy or fairy tale fill this beautiful book.I've enjoyed the fairy tales, but the highlight of the book is the stories of the youngsters featured in the photos. I want my grandchildren to know these "True Heroes" and their stories. I think the photos are stunning. I appreciate the QR codes found on the introduction page for each story. The code will open the page for the youngster's photo shoot, where you can see more photos and read additional information about the youngster.I highly recommend this book.
