Review Considering the dozens of books and zines about biodiesel, the hundreds of workshops held, and the thousands of pages of online discussion, it is a wonder this is the first time our collective knowledge about backyard biodiesel production has been gathered into an easy to read, how-to resource. Piedmont is a commercial operation with a homebrewer heritage. Bob and Lyle bring wisdom born of experience that few else in the industry can, written with grace and humor. This is a must read for the biodiesel nerd. It will sit on my bookshelf between my signed copy of Martin Mittelbach and my faded girlMark zine.---Matt Rudolf, former Executive Director of Piedmont Biofuels Cooperative and ongoing B100 userSmall biodiesel producers have always been the most creative and enthusiastic problem solvers. This book presents the accumulated experience of two of the field’s most experienced and authoritative practitioners. They not only guide you through the steps of making your own fuel, but make you excited to get started.---Jon Van Gerpen, Chair and Professor, Biological Engineering, University of IdahoAt last! A biofuel book that is realistic about global supply potential while being hands-on useful to the backyard or garage enthusiast. Though some first-generation biodiesel books were hampered by hype and misinformation, Estill and Armantrout get it right.---Richard Heinberg, author, AfterburnLyle Estill and Bob Armantrout are some of the absolute best minds in the business when it comes to making biodiesel. Whether it’s at a small scale level in your garage or a full-blown commercial biodiesel plant, these guys really know their stuff! Having a book written by these two on how to make biodiesel (and how to avoid all the mistakes along the way) is like having them right beside you. The writing is quick and easy to follow, and the chemistry explanations are great. We highly recommend it as a great book to anyone interested in making their own biodiesel, regardless of the scale.---Graydon Blair, President, Utah Biodiesel SupplyWhile the economic climate may not be ripe for commercial biodiesel production, it is an essential science whose art must not be forgotten purely due to lack of profitability. Having themselves ridden the commercial roller coaster many times, the combined experience of these two authors along with their entertaining rhetoric provide a sound source for safe community-scale biodiesel production to promote clean domestic fuel production and build resilient communities.---C. David Thornton - Clemson University Facilities Coordinator for Organics Recycling and Biofuels Programs.

By Matt R This is an easy to read guide on home brewing biodiesel, that also provides background context on the importance of the various procedures and test methods from guys that have been making biodiesel for a long time. It is the first practical how-to guide on hobby/pilot scale biodiesel production published in quite a while. It picks up where GirlMark's Homebrew Biodiesel Guide zine left off 6-7 years ago, but in a more polished, professionally published format. Strong focus on safety and fuel quality. It is a useful reference for people who need something to help them set up a small scale biodiesel production plant, be it in a barn, school setting, or development project in the developing world. Worth having on the shelf.

Highly recommended By Graydon Blair This is a great book for those interesting in seeing what it takes to make Biodiesel on a small scale.I've known both of the authors for years and they're some of the best in the industry. The writing style is really easy to read and understand but still detailed enough technically that you get a good grasp of what this whole Biodiesel stuff is, how it can be made and the pro's & con's of producing your own renewable fuel. It's not a difficult read at all plus they've added several tips & tricks to help save you a ton of time when you make it. It's my go to book that I recommend to anyone wanting to get started making Biodiesel or just those interested in seeing what it would take to make biodiesel. While there's a lot of books out on how to make it, many of them delve into politics and get way off base. This one just keeps it simple. Here's how you make it, here's what it requires, here's some of the things you'll run into and want to plan for when you make it and heres how to do it right. Short, simple, to the point, and sweet. It's also accurate (something a lot of the books on making your own biodiesel are seriously lacking). As a Biodiesel enthusiast, promoter, and retailer of biodiesel production goods and such, I really, really like this book and highly recommend it to anyone interested in getting started.- Graydon Blair, Utah Biodiesel Supply

If you only buy one book about biodiesel, this is it By JohnO Lyle Estill and Bob Armantrout have been immersed in the biodiesel movement almost from the beginning, both as homebrewers and as commercial producers, and have a wealth of knowledge about what works and what doesn’t. They’ve boiled it all down into this highly readable little book. If you want to understand why people make biodiesel at home, and why other people don’t make their own biodiesel, the answers are both in this book. Biodiesel isn’t for everyone, but if you’re thinking about making biodiesel at home, this is the first book to read.Cheers,John Ousterhout
