In a sense, this is a story of here-and-now. This Earth, this year ... but on a history-line slipped slightly sidewise. A history in which a great man acted differently, and Magic, rather than physical science, was developed.... The Eyes Have It, by Randall Garrett

About the Author Philip K. Dick (1928-1982) was an American science-fiction novelist, short-story writer and essayist. A contemporary of Ursula K. Le Guin, Dick's first short story, "Beyond Lies the Wub," was published shortly after his high-school graduation. Many of Dick's works drew upon his personal experiences with drug abuse, addressing topics such as paranoia and schizophrenia, transcendental experiences and alternate reality, and the childhood death of his twin sister is reflected through the recurring theme of the "phantom twin" in many of his novels. Despite ongoing financial troubles and issues with the IRS, Dick had a prolific writing career, winning both the Hugo Award and the Nebula Award multiple times. Some of his most famous novels and stories--A Scanner Darkly, "The Minority Report," "Paycheck," and Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep? (adapted into the film Blade Runner)--have been adapted for film. Dick died in 1982.

By Lee This extremely short and silly story is public domain and available in kindle format for free from project guttenberg. Pay $6.95 for a three-page freely available story only if you're determined to take every opportunity to contribute to Philip K Dick's estate and you own everything else he's ever written. The story itself is enjoyable for what it is - three pages of puns. It made me smile, and within very few words manages to introduce a strange character's worldview and then introduce a twist with the final sentence. So I never thought I would be one of those people who writes a negative review based on the pricing of the Kindle edition, but since I've got a history of buying and reviewing Philip K Dick books, Amazon automatically sent me a notification that this was now "available" and got my hopes up of reading a more substantial posthumous Philip K Dick work, so I'm annoyed.

The whole thing will take you less than 5 minutes to read, there's nothing else added to this printed standalone book version to add to the reading experience such as commentary, an introduction, afterward or anything even written before the author died or by another big name author. The spine doesn't have the title of the book or author's name so if displaying this in a bookcase between other books you're just looking at a black spine. I do like how Aegypan Press is publishing short stories by big name authors as they are nice to collect but they really need to put more effort into the covers. The image on the front cover is also pretty average with the eyes not looking real at all. Maybe there's some significance to the picture from the original collection it was published in but as I said there's no info to tell you.The story itself is pretty average and is just some guy jumping to ridiculous conclusions that characters in a book he has found aren't human because of phrases like she asked him if he would remove his arm. He immediately did so. This average story reminds me of the sort of stuff you'd have to write in a creative writing type exercise in a high school English class where you have to play on the English language. If you come across the story in a free Kindle download or something it would be worth having a look but it's not good enough to buy a hard or soft copy book and as I said the publishers haven't made a very collectible book anyway.

Think writing short stories is easy? Try to develope a character and story in less than 5 pages. It's hard, and Dick is a master. This edition: Don't waste your money. The free Guttenbwrg edition is fine. Why pay all this money for a (very) short story, especially when it's available for free?
