Author, William S Stryker. 514 page. 2001.This book originally was published in 1898 and was only reprinted in a limited production run in 2001. I purchased mine in 2008 at the re-enactment of the Battle of Trenton at the gift shop in the Old Barracks Museum. They are the publishers of the re-print and at the time there were maybe 20 left. The book was one of the first to detail the action from all sides. The author made extensive use of public and private papers on both sides of the ocean, records, remembrances of locals and others. The authors attention detail makes this one of the most referenced books about the battles at Trenton and Princeton. Pick up most any book dealing with these events published since 1900 and this book will be in the bibliography. Even with the additional sources uncovered since its penning it is still a valuable book especially if you want to read some of the original source documents. The presentation or formatting of the narrative is not smooth like many modern books. The narrative jumps from one side and their view and actions for five to ten pages and then back to the other side for their views and actions. This lack of smooth objective continuity which weaves all sides into a single tale may be a problem for many modern readers. The constant juxtaposition can unsettle readers not used to it. Because the author often has the actors speak for themselves the viewpoint is from the perspective of the actor at the time and not from the distanced historian. This subjective history is also at odds with most normal historical writing of our era.As it is written, it is written very well. It tends to give you movements of units, actions, and reactions of units but not much in terms of the experience of the people in those units. You get a little bit from the letters but there is a disconnect from the people in the text.Reading the book I felt that the first battle of Trenton seemed anti-climactic. The battle occurred in the text about 1/3 of the way in and sort of just blended in to the text. Before I realized it I was reading after action reports of the battle. The second battle of Trenton and the subsequent battle at Princeton had more of a build-up and a separation in the telling but not a lot. The appendices contain many letters and documents related to the battles and the events around them. These documents are interesting. I think the author may have been a bit too thorough in his presentation and the story telling lost a bit. This is a good book. It serves as a reference for most books on these subjects but its method of presentation feels dated.

Curtler This edition is in the "Forgotten Books" series and is a rather pale copy of the 1898 edition. The print is gray instead of black and the photos are faded beyond recognition, as are the copies of original correspondence. But the book is thorough and well written. The author claims that "nowhere in the annals of warfare can be found a counterpart of the winter campaign of Washington and his army in the years 1776-1777. . ." I dare say this is correct. And the book is a very carefully study of that campaign. -- If only the edition were sharper!
