Amore looked at herself in the full length mirror. She knew she was beautiful. She heard it all her life, starting with her father and the string of men flowing through their home after her father died, or was killed as rumor had it. Her mother Marie wasn't as taken with her as her dad had been and immediately put her to work tending the house. The house was a nice word for bordello. After Ralph Sanders died from 'food poisoning', Marie turned their home into a bordello and not because she needed to but wanted to. Ralph died in 1970 when Amore was sixteen and left a paid for home and insurance but Marie aspired to being a Madame. Shaking those thoughts away, Amore perused her looks again, her long hair flowed, her skin and makeup were flawless and her slim in some places and lush in other places body was poured into a form fitting red dress. She had to make money and fast. She was thirty and pretty much penniless. The man she lived with had moved on and though her mom was still alive and in her fifties, she refused to assist her unless she worked for her. Amore had no problem with sex or money but she wasn't giving it to Marie. That ship had sailed and unless she figured out something and fast, she was going to be homeless. Perhaps the event for Black Doctors and Pharmacists would prove to be beneficial. She knew she looked good and could play classy, Marie had taught her well. ¥¥¥¥¥ Nelson Dickson was bored out of his skull. At thirty one, he was a handsome pharmacist who had his own pharmacy and money from his parents both of whom died in their sixties. Since graduating pharmacy school his focus had been on building his business. Women offered themselves and sometimes he partook but most of the black debutantes and socialites he met bored him. He was conservative enough. He wanted and needed a woman who would light a fire in him, challenge him and fulfill the darkness he craved in a woman but never admitted. He was preparing to leave when the music slowed down and the most beautiful woman he ever saw stepped onto the floor, alone. She held a glass in her hand with what he would discover was scotch and she swayed, seductively with her eyes closed. He felt ignited, as if he had been dead and seeing her, brought him life. Boldly, he moved to her, surprising himself more than anyone. Her eyes opened slowly and a catlike look appeared on her face. Desire shot through him like lava. "Come home with me..." He said. "I'm not free." She murmured. "I can afford you." He replied. He moved to leave and she followed him, the glass still in her hand.

This book gives the story of April and Amelie's mother, her marriage to their father and how the girls ended up the way they are.I would say they did pretty good despite the circumstances! Ms Angelia sure can put together a story! This book made me feel sorry for Amore because she really has issues. But daddy? He could've used some cashews. Ijs.I love this book! Great for a good discussion.I am a beta reader for Ms Angelia and was asked to post an honest review of this book.

By SLewis Amore's father meant the world to her, but when he passed away, it was open season for her mother's mean spirited ways and hatred toward her. She had many companions, but when she met successful and rich Nelson and they fell in love and married all her problems would be gone. As time went on, a dark side of Amore appears leaving Nelson to wonder who did he marry.Amore: Damage Beauty may be a short story, but it packs a punch. I felt sorry for Amore after reading one sentence and upset with her in the next. The story has an even tempo.....not rushed or a feeling of missing events. The characters were easy to imagine.I have read several of Angelia Vernon Menchan's books and never felt disappointed. Her stories are easy to follow and there's always a vital message tucked away in the story. Sometimes her stories may be predictable, however, you can't wait to see what happens in the next paragraph.

The title of the book is fitting and hits at the heart of the storyline. While the story is short, it covers a host of realistic themes that are not openly spoken about within families—including the effects of addiction and hopelessness. The characters were realistically drawn and the way the story is told helps the reader figure out why the protagonists become the people they do. Like or hate them, Amore, Amelie, April and Nelson will have you amused, depressed and rooting for them to win their individual battles.I'm on to the next read to see what becomes of the family.
