By Jessica Gains I picked up on The Pariahs series around the same time that I picked up Adams' other fantasy series, Kobolds (Ren of Atikala.)In a sense, this is much closer to what is a more traditional 'fantasy' book for me. The focus is on Brea, a half-elf, and her companion, Kozog, a half-orc. The two are mercenaries--though their battles are hardly the enjoyable part of the series to me. There is a perfect level of nagging romantic tension between the two. It's not over-done and sappy, but it gives the characters depth and draws you into the story. There is sufficient action and danger to keep the pace of the tales from dragging. The characters see real danger and you are able to become concerned of what may happen next. The two have similar, yet differing ideologies and ways of looking at the world. I could easily read about the pair indefinitely, but I have sadly run out of content to read. To me, this has been the only drawback of the series--which I would have realized if I paid better attention to the description of the books as 'novellas'. But good things come in small doses as well, so it has been well worth the read.I have purchased the follow-up tales, Freelands and Elfhome. Whenever the next in the series is released, I will be certain to pick it up as well.
